Chelsea v Southampton LIVE: Eden Hazard has been in sensational form in recent games

Alvaro Morata is available again when Chelsea play Southampton in the Premier League today.

Striker Morata missed Tuesday’s win at Huddersfield through fatigue and with a back problem.

Defender David Luiz is continuing his rehabilitation from inflammation on his knee and remains out.

Mauricio Pellegrino has a fully fit squad to choose from.

Cedric Soares came through unscathed against Leicester on Wednesday after returning from a hamstring injury and is likely to keep his place.

But Pellegrino has suggested he will make changes at Stamford Bridge as Saints look to bounce back from their humiliating 4-1 defeat to the Foxes.

“We don’t usually do something special when we play against important players,” Pellegrino said on the threat of Eden Hazard.

"But we will try to defend him in zones. If you do man-to-man marking, this type of player can move in different places and it will be difficult for us.

“We have to be focused - don’t leave him to receive too much where he can be really dangerous.”

Chelsea vs Southampton confirmed line-ups and team news

Show/hide article…

Alvaro Morata has been left on the bench against Southampton as Eden Hazard starts up front for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Morata, who has scored nine Premier League goals in his debut season in England so far, missed Chelsea’s trip to Huddersfield on Tuesday night with a back issue and because of tiredness.

His absence meant Chelsea coach Antonio Conte turning to Hazard to fill in for Morata as a ‘false No.9’. Despite the latter returning to full training this week, Conte revealed the Spaniard is still experiencing pain in his back.

And it means that he is on the bench for Chelsea’s clash with the Saints in west London as Hazard starts up front and is flanked by Willian and Pedro in a 3-4-3 formation - the same set-up Conte used to inspire Chelsea to a 3-1 win over Huddersfield at John Smith’s Stadium.

Meanwhile, N’Golo Kante starts in midfield alongside Tiemoue Bakayoko, with Cesc Fabregas being rested, and Marcos Alonso and Victor Moses playing in the wing-back roles.

Cesar Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen and Gary Cahill start in defence with Thibaut Courtois behind them in goal.

Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk edges closer to exit

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino has dropped star defender Virgil Van Dijk for Saturday’s clash with Chelsea, sparking fresh rumours that the player could be on his way out of the club.

Van Dijk has been a long-term target of Liverpool and the 26-year-old could be sold when the transfer window re-opens in January.

Pellegrino has recently suggested that some of his squad were showing a lack of commitment, which could perhaps be the reason behind Van Dijk’s omission.

The Liverpool Echo report that Liverpool are ready to swoop for the Dutchman with boss Pellegrino unsure about the defender’s future at St Mary’s.

Pellegrino said, "I can’t say nothing about that because you never know what can happen in the future.

“Yes I would like to keep my important players in the squad.”

Southampton were humbled at the hands of Leicester City in midweek, with former manager coming back to haunt them with a 4-1 win with the Foxes.

Following that display, Saints boss Pellegrino hinted that commitment from some of his players was lacking - and insisted that he would only start players against Chelsea who were 100% committed to the team.

“We have to choose the players who want to help the club 100 per cent," Pellegrino said.

“I will explain that they are human beings and don’t have a good moment. I understand this but their behaviour has to be committed 100 per cent.

Van Dijk has not been selected to start against Chelsea as Pellegrino makes six changes to his starting line-up.

Of course, the defender could have been dropped for many different reasons, but the timing of this is certainly interesting - especially with the January transfer window so close.

Chelsea 1-0 Southampton: Alonso scores fourth goal of the season

Show/hide article…

Antonio Conte will wonder why this was all so tense. It really shouldn’t have been.

Marcos Alonso’s free-kick was enough to secure Chelsea a deserved win over Southampton.

But this win should have been far more comprehensive. Indeed, had Charlie Austin taken just one of three late chances then Chelsea would have been left facing up to an almighty injustice.

In the end, though, the Blues bandwagon rolls on with this victory; their eighth in 10 games.

Southampton will be left to rue the hat-trick of chances Austin missed in the dying stages. But anything other than victory would have been harsh on Chelsea.

Mauricio Pellegrino is struggling for answers right now. One win in nine Premier League games is worrying form.

Having said earlier in the week that he’d only start players who were ‘100 percent’ committed, manger Mauricio Pellegrino dropped a bombshell in axing key defender Virgil van Dijk from his starting XI.

Sat on the bench, the look on the Dutchman’s face spoke a thousand words. With January round the corner - and Liverpool and Manchester City lurking - is the Van Dijk transfer saga finally reaching a conclusion?

Southampton’s defence coped relatively comfortably without Van Dijk during the opening exchanges, though they were forced into an early change; Cedric limping off in the 17th minute to be replaced by Mario Lemina.

Gradually, though, Chelsea took control. Fraser Forster was becoming increasingly busy, the England keeper stopping efforts from Alonso, Gary Cahill and N’Golo Kante.

But the chances were far from clear-cut, much to Conte’s annoyance. The Italian struggles to hide his emotions at the best of times.

Needless to say he was far from happy with how the opening 30 minutes was panning, his gesticulations becoming progressively frantic with every passing minute.

Forster was called upon again in the 33rd minute, producing an excellent near post stop to deny Alonso for a second time before Pedro struck the foot of the post with a low deflected effort.

Surely this onslaught couldn’t continue with Southampton buckling? And so it proved as the Blues took a deserved lead in the second minute of first-half stoppage time.

Eden Hazard’s turn past Maya Yoshida to earn Chelsea a free kick 25-yards out was sublime.

Alonso’s low curling effort past Forster was just as special, the Spaniard’s strike viciously swinging round the wall before creeping past the Saints keeper.

Conte couldn’t contain his relief; Pellegrino couldn’t disguise his misery.

After his team’s demoralising 4-1 loss to Leicester in midweek, Pellegrino would have been satisfied with Southampton’s resilient first-half showing.

Truth be told, though, his side were fortunate not be further behind at half-time.

The second half started much like the first, with Chelsea in the ascendancy. Willian fired over the bar after a cutting inside from the right flank before Cesar Azpilicueta was off target with another long-ranger.

Pellegrino introduced top goalscorer Charlie Austin for the ineffective Manolo Gabbiadini in the 61st minute in an effort to awaken Southampton’s dozy attack.

And the move nearly paid instant dividends, Austin, sent clear through by Pierre-Emile Hojberg, denied by Thibault Courtois in a one-on-one.

That was the moment. Southampton, particularly with the way Chelsea were dominating the ball, surely wouldn’t get another chance like that.

Indeed, Chelsea hit the back of the net in the 69th minute, Hazard firing past Forster after a neat exchange with substitute Cesc Fabregas only for the goal to be ruled out for the tightest offside calls.

Alonso was denied a second by the overworked Forster, who then saved substitute Alvaro Morata’s fierce effort as the Blues sought to end any doubt over the result.

Yet, somehow, Southampton were clinging onto hope of a draw; Austin again drawing a save out of Courtois inside the final 15 minutes before the Saints striker flicked another effort wide five minutes from time as Chelsea held on for victory.

Alonso free-kick sinks Saints

Show/hide article…

The Spaniard’s curling effort on the stroke of half-time ensured that a combative Saints performance went unrewarded in West London.

Charlie Austin – a second-half substitute for Manolo Gabbiadini - twice tested Thibaut Courtois after the break as Mauricio Pellegrino’s men rallied late on but the 3,000 travelling supporters would be sent home disappointed.

Six changes were made to the side beaten by Leicester in the week with Jack Stephens and Wesley Hoedt restored alongside Maya Yoshida in defence.

Saints had pushed Manchester City and Arsenal all the way with a similar setup earlier in the month and they began brightly here at Stamford Bridge.

Early width came from Ryan Bertrand and Cédric Soares – the Portuguese withdrawn on 16 minutes for Mario Lemina – and it was the former that showed his team’s counter-attacking intent from the off.

Driving to the byline, the former Chelsea man crossed low into the box and dangerously into the legs of Gary Cahill with the goal unguarded and James Ward-Prowse waiting to pounce.

At the other end, a lunging Yoshida just did enough to pressure Willian into skewing wide from 12 yards and Fraser Forser twice kept out deflected efforts from Alonso and N’Golo Kanté.

The half’s clearest opening quickly followed on the half-hour mark. Eden Hazard’s mazy dribble made space for Willian on the right edge of the area only for Bertrand’s excellent sliding intervention to steer the ball away from goal and into the arms of Forster.

A Pedro shot bounced off the base of the post via a touch from Stephens as the Blues began to advance into visiting territory and the afternoon’s opening goal was not far behind.

Alonso’s curling free-kick into the bottom corner past the diving Forster was the final action of a half that undeservedly ended with Saints behind.

The home side began the second half much the stronger. Mauricio Pellegrino responded quickly by introducing Austin in place of Gabbiadini and the in-form frontman immediately posed a threat.

Scurrying in behind onto Pierre-Emile Højbjerg’s through ball, Austin’s first touch of the day set up the shot, the second was heading for the far corner only for Thibaut Courtois to palm the ball wide on the stretch.

An offside flag against substitute Cesc Fàbregas prevented Eden Hazard from extending the Blues’ advantage before Forster acrobatically denied Alonso from distance.

As the play became stretched, a second goal for either side seemed inevitable. Forster was sharp to keep out Àlvaro Morata from close range and within seconds Courtois was doing the same, scrambling clear Austin’s toe-poke from Sofiane Boufal’s threaded pass.

Within an instant, Fàbregas eluded Stephens at the back post and rolled the ball agonisingly along the goal-line to groans from the nervous home fans as the game entered its final 10 minutes.

Stephens’ near-post cross found Austin unmarked to steer inches wide on the run but Antonio Conte’s side managed the closing stages intelligently to kill off any lingering doubt.

An improvement on Wednesday night but not enough for Saints at the home of the reigning champions.

Chelsea 1 Southampton 0: Marcos Alonso’s 30-yard free-kick bags the points as Saints drop Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino dropped central defender Virgil van Dijk as his team went a fifth game without a victory. Van Dijk was one of six Saints players to pay for the 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Leicester City. But, while they were better than they had been in midweek, Pellegrino’s men still slipped to defeat against Chelsea.

A Marcos Alonso free-kick was enough to clinch victory for the Blues, but it was the man who spent the entire match on the substitutes’ bench that caused most intrigue. Van Dijk had started 11 successive games before the trip to Stamford Bridge and the timing of his omission will only increase talk of a potential January move away from Southampton.

Chelsea were one of the clubs, along with Liverpool and Arsenal, who were interested in signing £70 million-rated Van Dijk during the summer, while Manchester City are known to want central defensive cover in the next transfer window.

This was an important three points for Chelsea and head coach Antonio Cone, who stuck with Eden Hazard in the ‘false nine’ role, even though Alvaro Morata was back from injury. But it was left wing-back Alonso who broke the deadlock for the Blues in time added on for stoppages at the end of the first half.
