Five stats to tell your mates from Saturday’s Premier League action

We pick out five of standout statistics to tell your mates from Saturday’s Premier League action.

So which defender scored his 10th Premier League goal since the start of last season?

And which goalkeeper kept his 199th clean sheet?

Marcos Alonso underlined his importance to Chelsea’s attack as his stunning free-kick gave Chelsea a 1-0 win over Southampton at Stamford Bridge. The left wing-back has now scored 10 Premier League goals since the start of last season - more than any other defender in the division.

Alonso was a constant menace to Southampton, in fact, attempting six shots on goal in total - twice as many as any other player on the pitch. Over the course of this season, striker Alvaro Morata is the only Chelsea player to have had more attempts on goal. It’s quite the feat for a defender.

Mesut Ozil was Arsenal’s hero against Newcastle as his stunning volley gave Arsene Wenger’s side a much-needed victory at the Emirates Stadium. But at the other end of the pitch, it was also a significant day for goalkeeper Petr Cech.

The former Chelsea shot-stopper helped keep Rafael Benitez’s side at bay and is now only one shutout away from number 200. He will be the first goalkeeper in Premier League history to reach the landmark. Will he do it against Liverpool on Friday Night Football?

Mauricio Pochettino endured another disappointing away day against one of the Premier League’s top six, as his Tottenham side were thrashed 4-1 by Pep Guardiola’s imperious Manchester City.

Spurs boss Pochettino has been rightly lauded for the job he has done at Spurs, but he has only won once in 18 Premier League games away to City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool. It is a record he must improve in order to keep Spurs moving forwards.

Glenn Murray skied a penalty as Brighton were held to a goalless draw by Burnley at the Amex Stadium. The striker has now missed three of his last five spot kicks in the Premier League. The Seagulls, now seven games without a win, will need him to hit the target next time around.

West Ham piled more pressure on Mark Hughes as they claimed a 3-0 win over Stoke at the bet365 Stadium. It was the Potters’ third consecutive Premier League defeat and leaves them just a point above the relegation zone.

Stoke’s defensive problems are a particular cause for concern for Hughes. As well as conceding nine goals in their last three games, they have only kept one clean sheet in their last 16.

Mauricio Pellegrino admits he ‘can’t control’ Virgil van Dijk’s Southampton future

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino has conceded that he “can’t control” the future of defender Virgil van Dijk ahead of the January transfer window.

Van Dijk, who has made 12 appearances for Southampton this season, was dropped by Pellegrino for Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Chelsea.

The 26-year old defender was at the centre of strong interest from Liverpool in the summer, with the Reds forced to issue a public apology for an improper approach, and Pellegrino admits the situation regarding his future is out of his control.

“I can’t control the market,” said Pellegrino. “I’m not the owner of the player. I can have my opinion and this I have given to the technical director, to the chairman.”

“After, the board can decide all together which is the best for the team.”

Van Dijk issued a transfer request in August in order to push through a Southampton departure, though the club maintained their stance in refusing to sell the Netherlands international.

The former Celtic player, who joined Southampton for £11.5m in 2015, trained away from his Saints team-mates at the start of the season but has since earned his way back into the first-team squad.

Pellegrino insists he will make every effort to keep the club’s “best player” when the January transfer window opens in the New Year.

“I will repeat that I can’t control the market right now. I can’t control this,” he added.

“I will recommend to try to keep our best player here in the club. The club was clear in the beginning and I have the same opinion.”

Van Dijk could leave the club in January, says Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino axed Virgil van Dijk on Saturday — then opened the door for the Dutchman to leave next month.

Pellegrino took the shock decision to drop Van Dijk against Chelsea, though he insisted the central defender was rested.

Van Dijk’s attempts to quit Southampton dominated last summer at St Mary’s.

The club’s £70million asking price proved prohibitive, but there was concrete interest from Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City.

Speaking after Saints’ 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, Pellegrino admitted Van Dijk could be on his way in next month’s window.

He said: ‘I can’t control the market, I’m not the owner of the player.

‘I can have my opinion and I have to give that to the technical director, to the chairman. After that, the board can decide what is best for the team.

‘But I repeat that I can’t control the market right now. I will recommend to try to keep our best player here at the club. The club was clear about it in the beginning and I have the same opinion.’

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte was coy about whether he was still keen on signing Van Dijk.

He said: ‘As you know very well, I don’t like to talk about players of the other team. It’s not good.

‘It’s a lack of respect for my players, especially, and for the other team.

‘He’s a really good player. He had a bad injury, but he has recovered very well.’

Marcos Alonso the difference as Chelsea brush aside Southampton

Show/hide article…

Chelsea’s fifth successive home win and a second victory in a week kept them in pursuit of the Manchester clubs at the top of the Premier League and helped Antonio Conte’s men to bury the memories of last weekend’s tame defeat at West Ham still deeper.

Marcos Alonso scored the only goal with a free kick in first-half stoppage time but Chelsea could have scored many more against a Southampton team who were set up with defence in mind. Yet only a good save by Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois prevented substitute Charlie Austin grabbing a second-half equaliser that would scarcely have been deserved.

Southampton have only won one match in their last nine, but this was an improvement on the 4-1 home capitulation against Leicester in midweek. Mauricio Pellegrino, the Southampton manager, had said after that that he was ready to ditch players who were not fully committed to the club. So the dropping to the bench of captain Steven Davis, record signing Mario Lemina, Virgil van Dijk, Dusan Tadic, Sofiane Boufal was bound to be taken as an indication of whom he was talking about.

Conte made only one change to the team that won 3-1 away to Huddersfield, restoring Cary Cahill to the defence in place of Antonio Rudiger and persevering with Eden Hazard as a false nine.

Despite Southampton’s defensive approach, they almost opened the scoring after eight minutes. Former Chelsea Champions League winner Ryan Bertrand crossed low from the left and the ball beat Thibaut Courtois, arriving at the feet of Cahill, who almost presented it to Manolo Gabbiadini before recovering to make his clearance.

Chelsea did not show until Willian cut inside and exchanged passes with Alonso in the 14th minute, shooting just wide. Saints goalkeeper Fraser Forster had little to do until the 20th minute, when he had to deal with a bouncing volley by Alonso and a long shot from Cahill that he could only parry. He did better after 24 minutes, leaping high to his right to touch away a deflected 25-yarder from N’Golo Kante.

Chelsea were in charge now, and Wesley Hoedt’s last-ditch intervention prevented Willian from pouncing on Pedro’s low cross. And Forster had to push aside Alonso’s right-foot shot after more trickery by Willian.

Just before half-time Pedro forced his way past a challenge and hit a low shot that hit the base of the near post via a deflection, but Chelsea would not be denied. In first-half stoppage time, Maya Yoshida was forced to foul Hazard to stop him and Alonso bent the ball around the wall and low past Forster’s right hand.

The second half continued in the same vein, Chelsea’s nimble front three attempting to dance through the massed ranks of Saints defenders, but while the lead was a single goal, Chelsea were at risk from an error or moment of inspiration. But when Hojbjerg sent substitute Austin clear, it was Courtois who found the inspiration, diving to his left to save the forward’s curled shot towards the bottom corner.

A second, of course, would have sealed it but Chelsea could not work that decisive opening. Yoshida blocked from Hazard and Forster saved Alonso’s right-foot volley at full stretch. Then Morata, on as a substitute, shot too close to Forster and Alonso headed wide, while Cesc Fabregas caught out the defence following a quickly-taken free kick but his shot rolled across the face of the goal instead of in.

Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City alerted as Saints drop huge hint on Virgil van Dijk future

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk is wanted by the Premier League’s heavy-hitters

All three clubs are admirers of the Dutch central defender who handed in a transfer request last summer.

And now the Premier League giants have been handed a boost in their pursuit of the 26-year-old by Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino.

Van Dijk was benched by his Argentine manager for his side’s 1-0 defeat to Chelsea yesterday.

And Pellegrino has stated he has no control over where van Dijk’s future lies.

“I can’t control the market,” he said after the game in which Marcus Alsono scored the winner from a free-kick.

"I’m not the owner of the player. I can have my opinion and this I have given to the technical director, to the chairman.

“After, the board can decide all together which is the best for the team.”

Conte refuses to comment on Chelsea interest in Van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Antonio Conte refused to comment on whether Chelsea could go back in for Virgil van Dijk in January but labelled the Southampton defender as a “really good player”.

The Saints managed to hold onto Van Dijk last summer despite the centre-back handing in a transfer request amid interest from Liverpool and Chelsea.

The 26-year-old, who was an unused substitute against the Blues at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, recently hinted he could be open to a mid-season move away from Southampton.

But Conte did not want to say whether Van Dijk remains on his wishlist as Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino admitted he doesn’t want to lose one of his best players.

After being asked about the Dutchamn, Conte said following Chelsea’s 1-0 win against the Saints: "As you know very well I don’t like to talk about other players of the other team.

"It’s not good. It’s a lack of respect for my players, especially, and then for the other team, in this case for Van Dijk.

“He’s a really good player. He had a bad injury, but I think he recovered very well. I wish him the best.”

Van Dijk played the entirety of Southampton’s 4-1 loss to Leicester in midweek - a result that left Pellegrino criticising his players’ commitment.

Despite then not playing the defender against Chelsea, Pellegrino insisted the move was to give Van Dijk some rest and said he would start the Dutchman in the Saints’ next game against Huddersfield next Saturday.

“Obviously Virgil is an important player. It always depends how they are, how the energy they’ve got in every training session. A lot of things make an important player,” he said.

"I will repeat that I can’t control the market. I’m not the owner of the player. I can have my opinion and this I have give to the technical director, to the chairman my opinion. After the board can decide altogether which is the best for the team.

"I will recommend to try to keep our best player here in the club. The club was clear in the beginning and I have the same opinion.
