bust common football myths: Is 2-0 the worst lead?

Show/hide article…

They say a 2-0 lead is the most dangerous winning margin - but is it? We’ve checked Opta data to bust the myth…

The theory suggests that teams with two-goal leads become complacent and are more likely to concede victory than teams with a one-goal advantage - who maintain concentration because of the slender margin.

In total, 2,766 teams have held a two-goal advantage during a game since the Premier League kicked off in August 1992.

Of those, a staggering 2,481 ended up winning the fixture, with only 212 ending in draws and 73 with defeats.

Therefore, 90 per cent of teams that gain a two-goal lead win the game, 7.4 per cent draw and only 2.6 per cent suffer defeat.

Teams with a one-goal advantage are far less likely to win. Of the 5,721 sides that have been one goal ahead during the Premier League era, only 2,987 won the game, 1,747 drew and 987 lost.

Remarkably, that’s only a 52.2 per cent win rate, with 30.5 per cent ending all square and 17.3 per cent losing the fixture.

A one-goal winning margin means a team is 37.8 per cent less likely to win the game than a team with a two-goal advantage.

So, a 1-0 winning margin is far more vulnerable than a 2-0 lead.

And the odds of victory are slashed even more drastically with a three-goal winning margin.

Since August 1992, 1,119 teams have led by three goals and 1,099 of those claimed three points - that’s a 98.2 per cent win rate.

In 25 years, only 16 teams have fought back from three goals down to secure a draw and just four have overturned the deficit to win - that’s 0.4 per cent.

In chronological order, Leeds overturned Derby’s 3-0 advantage at Elland Road in November 1997, with Rod Wallace reducing the deficit in the 37th minute and Lee Bowyer claiming all three points in the 90th minute.

Wimbledon achieved the same feat in fewer minutes the following year after John Hartson’s goal and a quick double from Ian Wright had put West Ham 3-0 up with just 27 minutes on the clock, before Jason Euell, Efan Ekoku and two goals from Marcus Gayle sealed a 4-3 winning comeback.

Perhaps the most extraordinary comeback came in September 2001, when Manchester United trailed Tottenham 3-0 at half-time through strikes from Dean Richards, Les Ferdinand and Christian Ziege.

Andy Cole started United’s comeback within a minute of the restart, before goals from Laurent Blanc, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Juan Sebastian Veron and David Beckham sealed a memorable 5-3 victory at White Hart Lane.

Wolves were the last team to overturn a three-goal deficit and claim victory in October 2003, cancelling a Les Ferdinand brace and Riccy Scimeca goal with second-half strikes from Alex Rae, Henri Camara and Colin Cameron scoring twice.

Only one team in the entire Premier League era have come back to share the spoils after falling four goals or more behind.

Arsenal squandered a 4-0 advantage on 68 minutes against Newcastle in February 2011 to end up drawing 4-4 at St James’ Park.

Theo Walcott, Johan Djourou and two goals from Robin Van Persie had given the Gunners a commanding lead before the break.

However, Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby was sent off five minutes after the restart, before the Magpies grabbed four goals in 19 minutes through Leon Best, the late Cheick Tiote goal and two penalties from Joey Barton.

Transfer news: Leicester City and Southampton among clubs eyeing Valencia defender Aymen Abdennour

Show/hide article…

The 27-year-old has been linked with a move to the Premier League for over a year now and he was reportedly close to joining Everton last August.

That deal, however, ending up collapsing and the Algerian has more recently been on Marseille’s radar.

The French club are fans of Abdennour and manager Rudi Garcia is eager to take him to the Stade Velodrome this summer.

However, according to Foot Mercato, Marseille will have to fend off competition from both Leicester and Southampton if they want to land the centre-back.

The Premier League duo are said to be tracking Abdennour and they are prepared to make formal offers if he becomes available.

Interest in the Valencia defender does not stop there, however, with Italian side Inter Milan also keen on striking a deal.

Transfer News LIVE: Aguero to Chelsea, Van Dijk to Liverpool, Man Utd, Arsenal gossip

Show/hide article…

Transfer News LIVE: All the latest gossip, done deals and rumours as they happen throughout the day

5.30pm: Nemanja Matic has demanded a meeting with Chelsea bigwig Marina Granovskaia in order to force a Stamford Bridge exit.

The Serbian has been linked with both Juventus and Manchester United in recent weeks.

But the Blues would prefer to sell Matic to the Serie A champions after the Red Devils beat them to the signing of Romelu Lukaku.

Chelsea have signed Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco, who is set to replace Matic in Antonio Conte’s midfield.

And the 28-year-old will not be on the Blues’ flight to the Far East for their pre-season tour as a result.

Matic believes the £40m Chelsea are demanding is too much as he only has two years left on his contract at the club, according to Corriere dello Sport.

4.35pm: Craig Burley is not convinced by Manchester United signing Romelu Lukaku.

“If you take into account Sergio Aguero, who could be surplus to requirements at Man City, and Harry Kane,” he said on ESPN FC.

"People will say ‘Sergio Aguero, plays for Man City, he’s not going to play for Man Utd’. Well Carlos Tevez did it, he went from United to City, it has happened.

"What I’m saying is he didn’t even get the best striker in my opinion in the Premier League.

“Good luck to the lad, he’s a youngster, it’s a great opportunity. But I tell you what, there’s going to be no hiding place.”

Liverpool fans convinced club’s new third kit is a clever Virgil van Dijk ploy

Show/hide article…

Many Liverpool fans were excited to finally see their club’s new 2017/18 third kit launched on Monday morning.

According to New Balance, “the design inspiration for the third kit comes from the original wooden signage of the famous Kop stand. The 2017/18 third kit is Bold Citrus in colour and is framed with a black collar and trims.”

Bold Citrus? Looks orange to us. Either way, it’s a nice strip.

Anyway… while many supporters were simply delighted to get a first official glimpse of the new colours, others took one look at the new kit and decided that it was more than just a new shirt. Some particularly optimistic Reds think it might be the key to Jurgen Klopp finally landing his No1 transfer target.

Take a closer look at the new kit. Remind you of any other famous strips?

The orange top with the black trim… the new Liverpool kit looks EXACTLY like a classic Netherlands shirt.

And who plays for the Netherlands?

Yep, Virgil van Dijk - the Southampton defender Liverpool have been chasing all summer.

The similarity between the two kits is, of course, a coincidence.

The fact Liverpool will (at some point) play in colours which resemble those of van Dijk’s country is not really going to have much impact on any potential transfer.

Nonetheless, with tongue firmly in cheek, plenty of Liverpool fans are taking the link to be a positive.

Bednarek: It’s great to be here

Show/hide article…

The Poland under-21 interntional defender re-joined the group after a slightly extended break, following his participation in the European Championships.

But while Saints’ first summer signing now feels mentally refreshed, a vehement desire to hit the ground running was reflected in additional fitness work ahead of next week’s trip to France.

“I was really missing football so I’m just happy I’m here,” said Bednarek.

“It was good to have some rest but I didn’t forget about keeping in shape so I did some extra work and I feel good and ready.

“We have to be one team if we are to be successful so it’s very important to know each and have good relationships.

“Day after day I will know everyone much better and that’s a point to try and get to know about my teammates as fast as possible.

“It’s good that we can go on a camp so I can start to co-operate with my teammates and it will be very good for me.”

DEAL DONE! Everton complete free signing of Cuco Martina following Southampton exit

Show/hide article…

Everton have announced the signing of former Southampton defender Cuco Martina on a three-year deal.

The 27-year-old defender arrives at Goodison Park on a free transfer, having seen his contract with Saints expire at the end of the 2016/17 season.

Primarily a right-back, Martina will link up with Ronald Koeman once again, having worked under the Dutchman for one year at St Mary’s.

Everton have had a busy summer in the transfer market, bringing in the likes of Wayne Rooney, Sandro Ramirez and Jordan Pickford, and Martina admits their approach persuaded him to move to Merseyside.

“Everton is a big club with big ambitions and I’m really looking forward to joining this group of players and the manager as we try to step forward next season,” the defender told evertonfc.com.

"Obviously, I know the manager from my time at Southampton, so I know what he wants and he knows what I can do.

“Everton supporters are really passionate about their club and everyone’s excited about where the club is aiming. You can see this is a club that wants to achieve something and the players we are bringing certainly show this.”

The Toffees’ regular right-back Seamus Coleman suffered a double-leg break while on international duty in March so will miss the start of this campaign, while Koeman was also keen to acquire more defensive options ahead of their return to the Europa League.

“Cuco Martina is an experienced player who can perform in different positions at the back, which is important,” Koeman added.

"It’s also important, with the number of games we will face in the coming campaign, that we have strength and competition in the squad.

“I brought the player to Southampton, so I know what he can do for us here and this is why I’ve now brought him to Everton. He is a player who will strengthen our squad and be able to play in different positions when that’s needed, too.”

Martina made 36 appearances over two seasons with Saints and scored just once, although it was a stunning long-range strike in a 4-0 victory over Arsenal in 2015.

Everton’s latest recruit was part of the travelling party bound for Holland on Monday as part of their pre-season preparations.

Under-21 internationals Pickford and Sandro, who missed last week’s friendly in Tanzania having been given extra time off after featuring at Euro 2017, were also on the plane but Ross Barkley was not.

The club have explained a groin injury has again prevented the midfielder from joining Koeman’s squad.

Barkley had been given an ultimatum this summer of signing a new contract or being sold but last week his manager claimed his future was no clearer.

Everton sign right-back Cuco Martina on a free transfer

Show/hide article…

Cuco Martina has become the latest player to join Everton this summer - and the defender revealed it was the club’s ‘big ambition’ shown in the transfer market that convinced him to join on a free transfer.

Right-back Martina, who had been released by Southampton, joins fellow new recruits Jordan Pickford, Wayne Rooney, Davy Klaassen, Sandro Ramirez and Michael Keane at Goodison Park, while Henry Onyekuru also joined before being loaned to Anderlecht for the coming year.

He had been available for no fee after his contract at St Mary’s ran out at the end of last season, and the defender has put pen to paper on a three-year deal.

The 27-year-old defender once again links up with Ronald Koeman, with whom he worked for a year during his time at St Mary’s.

‘Everton is a big club with big ambitions and I’m really looking forward to joining this group of players and the manager as we try to step forward next season,’ Martina told the club website.

‘Obviously, I know the manager from my time at Southampton, so I know what he wants and he knows what I can do.’

Koeman said Martina’s ability to play in several positions will make him a valuable asset to the Blues.

‘Cuco Martina is an experienced player who can perform in different positions at the back, which is important,’ he said.

'It’s also important, with the number of games we will face in the coming campaign, that we have strength and competition in the squad.

‘I brought the player to Southampton, so I know what he can do for us here and this is why I’ve now brought him to Everton. He is a player who will strengthen our squad and be able to play in different positions when that’s needed, too.’

Having played his youth football at Dutch giants Feyenoord, right-back Martina broke through at RBC Roosendaal before playing under Everton assistant manager Erwin Koeman at RKC Waalwijk.

Switching to Twente, he spent two years with the Dutch side before heading to St Mary’s in 2015. He made 36 appearances over two seasons at Southampton, scoring his only goal in a 4-0 win over Arsenal with a long-range strike beyond Petr Cech.

Having made his debut against the Dominican Republic back in 2011, Martina has amassed 30 caps for the Caribbean nation of Curacao and he recently became captain.

Martina have been named in a 25-man Everton squad which left for Holland on Monday afternoon and he is expected to feature in the friendly against his former club Twente on Wednesday.
