Liverpool Transfer News: Van Dijk move back on claim, Keita update, Klopp talks deals

Show/hide article…

Virgil Van Dijk could still be heading to Liverpool this summer. The Southampton star was all set to join the Reds last month but the Saints accused Liverpool of illegally approaching their man. Liverpool issued a public apology and the deal was off. However, according to The Sun, Van Dijk could still complete a £60m move to Anfield. They say the 26-year-old will only leave Southampton for Liverpool and the defender is considering handing in a transfer request to force the switch. Jurgen Klopp is a huge admirer of Van Dijk and thinks he’ll solve Liverpool’s defensive problems.

“Virgil Van Dijk could still be heading to Liverpool this summer” Naby Keita will be a Liverpool player next season if they meet RB Leipzig’s asking price. That’s the view of European football expert Gabriele Marcotti. Klopp wants to bring the 22-year-old to Anfield and Liverpool have seen a £57m bid rejected by the Bundesliga side. And Marcotti says the Reds will get their man if they’re willing to pay up. “I don’t think Liverpool ever believed it was dead,” Marcotti said on ESPN FC. "I think Liverpool believe that Keita wants to come and they believe via intermediaries that they have an understanding of what his terms would be. "The problem is Red Bull and Ralf Rangnick have come out and he said he does not want to sell, Keita’s not for sale. “This is a classic situation where it becomes a test of resolve, like a game of chicken.”

Klopp is ready to spend this summer but the Liverpool boss insists it will only be on the right players. Van Dijk and Keita are expensive targets and Klopp is adamant the Reds will not overspend and waste cash in the coming weeks. “We want to have the right things (and not) just do something,” said Klopp. “It is not about a number. It is about how it fits together. “It’s not that we don’t want to spend. It is all about doing the right things. “What is the challenge? To convince the players or the challenge to have the money? “We pretty much have all what you need. But at the end it is still business, whether you have the money.”

Transfer news and gossip from Monday’s papers

Show/hide article…

Arsenal have quietly enjoyed a good transfer window after landing Sead Kolasinac and Alexandre Lacazette.

Arsene Wenger will continue his rebuilding project by lining up Virgil van Dijk in a £45m move, report the Express.

The Southampton star was at the centre of a tapping up row with Liverpool backing off after being reported.

And the Gunners aim to take advantage of the bad blood by making a move of their own, with Saints likely to prefer the Dutch international moving to north London.

Here’s the transfer news and gossip from tomorrow’s paper:

Manchester United appear closer than ever to landing midfielder Ivan Perisic, with Italian media reports suggesting Inter Milan are about to sign Lazio’s Keita Balde as a replacement for the Croatian.

Arsene Wenger still thinks Arsenal can convince Alexis Sanchez to stay, despite Sanchez insisting he wants Champions League football, which the Gunners cannot offer again until 2018.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been warned by Dortmund to sort out his future - so that they can land a replacement. Chelsea, having lost out to Manchester United for Everton’s Romelu Lukaku, are among a number of clubs keen to land the 28-year-old Gabon international striker.

Manchester City’s England keeper Joe Hart is expected to undergo a medical at West Ham within the next 48 hours, ahead of a season-long loan deal.

Tottenham hope to complete the signing of £8million Estudiantes defender Juan Foyth by the end of this week.

Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny is poised to complete an £8million move to Italian champions Juventus. Poland international Szczesny has spent the past two seasons out on loan in Serie A with Roma.

Sergio Romero has signed a new deal with Manchester United, which will keep him at the club until June 2021.

Harry Redknapp wants to roll back the years with an audacious transfer treble at Birmingham. Boss Redknapp has confirmed his interest in Ashley Cole, Robbie Keane and Stewart Downing as he bids to lead the club to promotion.

Everton are likely to budge on their £50m asking price for Ross Barkley with Tottenham ready to intensify their interest in the England international (Independent)

Juventus are close to finalising a move for Federico Bernardeschi from Fiorentina, with the Italy under-21 star set to join the Old Lady on their US tour, which starts on Wednesday (Tuttosport)

Arsene Wenger weighing up £45m bid for Southampton star Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

The Arsenal boss is keen on the Dutch international and could launch a swoop, Starsport understands.

Wenger looked at the player two years ago when he impressed at Celtic.

The Gunners didn’t follow up their interest with a bid, opening the door to Southampton to snap him up.

And it could now cost them vastly more than the £12m Saints paid the Glasgow giants to get Van Dijk at the Emirates.

Liverpool are also not out of the running for the defender, despite being forced to publicly apologise for their pursuit of the player earlier this summer.

Virgil van Dijk LATEST: Liverpool switch is STILL ON with reports he could force through dream move to Anfield

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk’s proposed switch to Liverpool is STILL ON, with the defending willing to force through his dream move to Anfield this summer, according to reports.

The Dutchman was heavily linked with a move to Anfield before the transfer window opened, but the deal looked dead after Southampton accused the Merseyside club of illegally tapping up their star man.

Liverpool responded with statement insisting they had ended their pursuit, but after a Premier League investigation excused the Reds of any wrongdoing, it is understood they are back in the hunt.

A number of Premier League sides are thought to be tracking Van Dijk, with Arsenal and Chelsea reportedly also interested in the 26-year-old, who is valued at around £60million.

But, according to The Sun, the in-demand defender only has eyes for a move to Anfield this summer and is prepared to hand in a transfer request to force his dream switch.

Van Dijk remains Jurgen Klopp’s number one summer target and new Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino has insisted he will not stand in the centre-back’s way.

Mauricio ready for a crucial week

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino is hoping Saints can start to ramp up their pre-season preparations when more senior players return to training this week.

The manager is set to welcome back five first team squad members following a week’s training camp in Austria which ended with Saturday’s goalless friendly draw with Swiss Super Leaguers St Gallen.

England Under-21 quartet James Ward-Prowse, Nathan Redmond, Jack Stephens and Matt Targett will report back this week, along with right back Cedric Soares.

Pellegrino is fully aware time is ticking ahead of Premier League opener with Swansea City at St Mary’s in 26 days time.

“Every week for us is crucial, because we don’t have too much time,” said the Argentine. “We will play another four games, which is not too much, but we have to try to do our best every single day.

“We are expecting the other players that will arrive (this week) and hopefully it will be better for us.”

Saints’ second friendly takes them to Championship club Brentford next Saturday, before a week’s training in France ends with a friendly against St Etienne on July 29.

Saints then have two home friendlies - against FC Augsburg and Sevilla on August 2 and 5 respectively - before the curtain is lifted on the new league campaign.

“It’s been a good week and it’s obviously early days in terms of the manager getting his ideas across to the players,” Davis said.

“It was nice to get 45 minutes under our belts (against St Gallen). It wasn’t the best of games but it’s good to get that fitness.”

“It was a really good set up where we were in Austria with nice facilities.

“It was a good chance for us to get some work done on the training pitch and we’re trying to implement the manager’s ideas in the games.

“We saw some of the things he’s looking for but there’s a lot to work on and improve on.”
