Saints stand firm on van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk has not handed in a transfer request as Saints remain confident they can keep hold of their star defender.

There have been widespread suggestions that the Dutch international is so keen on a switch to Liverpool that he has spoken to the Saints hierarchy to try and force through a move.

That would inevitably mean having to table a written transfer request to put pressure on the club to sell to Liverpool, with the player also then forgoing his right to compensation for the remaining five years on his St Mary’s contract.

However, the Daily Echo understands that no such conversations have taken place and that van Dijk has not tried to force through a move behind the scenes.

As things stand Saints are still adamant that they can keep hold of van Dijk, despite the rumblings over Liverpool’s interest growing ever louder again.

It seemed Saints had managed to fend off the Anfield club’s advances after threatening to report them to the Premier League for an alleged illegal approach.

Liverpool issued an apology in which they said they were dropping their interest in the player.

Though publically nothing has changed, and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been guarded with his comments so as not to inflame the situation, media reports suggest they haven’t entirely given up yet.

That has been based on the assumption that van Dijk is still keen on a move to Liverpool, and there is little doubt that having not filled that position that the Reds would be keen, with a £60m price tag quoted.

The Daily Echo understands that that kind of figure has never been enough to tempt Saints.

However, there is an expectation in Liverpool that could change if van Dijk is prepared to really push for the move and back Saints into a corner.

That would be out of character for van Dijk, though, with the laid back 26-year-old having been a solid member of the squad.

He travelled to Austria to take part in the first pre-season training camp under Mauricio Pellegrino though didn’t figure in the friendly against St Gallen as Saints ease him back after a prolonged period out injured.

Saints remain adamant that they want to keep hold of van Dijk for at least another season, with the theory that his value is unlikely to dip in the next 12 months, at which point the situation can be reviewed again.

Having handed van Dijk a six-year deal last summer, and with the centre half having spent the second half of last season out injured, they believe they are entitled to loyalty from the player in return for their investment.

Targett relishing a fresh start

Show/hide article…

Targett endured seven months on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury in a 3-1 success over Burnley last October, before playing 90 minutes in the penultimate Premier League clash against Manchester United at St Mary’s.

And having been away with England at the under-21 European Championships, the full-back is now hoping to make an instant impression on Mauricio Pellegrino.

“I’m happy to be back. I had a nice holiday but now I’m looking to hit the ground running,” said Targett.

“It’s strange, especially when you have a new manager because you just want to get back and try to impress him as quickly as you can.

“I’m back though now so I’m looking forward to meeting him and being back with the team again.

“I spoke to a few of the lads to see how training has been and it’s nice to see what they think.

“I didn’t play in the Euros so it was important for me to get back early and start working.”

Premier League clubs’ pre-season friendly schedule ranked for distance covered

Show/hide article…

The pre-season friendly schedule is underway for Premier League clubs - but which team will travel the farthest?

Pre-season friendlies enable players to reach match fitness, build team camaraderie, test tactics, field new signings and promote the club in distant countries - but some clubs are travelling far more than others…

Arsenal will be the most-travelled club this summer, covering 21,184 miles during their tour of Australia and China - just 3,500 miles short of the distance around Earth.

The Gunners cruised past Sydney FC and the Western Sydney Wanderers in Australia and will face Bayern Munich at the Shanghai Stadium in China on Wednesday before playing Chelsea in Beijing on Saturday.

Manchester United will clock the next greatest distance with 15,939 air miles during their globe-trotting warm-up campaign.

Jose Mourinho’s men thumped LA Galaxy 5-2 in California on Sunday before they travelled another 582 miles to play Real Salt Lake in Utah.

United face Manchester rivals City in the International Champions Cup in Houston on Thursday and end their US tour with fixtures against La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona before playing Valerenga in Norway and Sampdoria in Ireland.

Chelsea, Everton and West Brom will all travel around 14,000 miles. Antonio Conte’s men visit China and Singapore, while the Toffees return from Tanzania to play Twente and Genk in the Netherlands and Belgium.

The Baggies have travelled to Austria and are yet to compete in the Premier League Asia Trophy in Hong Kong, live on Sky Sports, before playing several fixtures in the UK and ending their schedule against Deportivo la Coruna in Spain.

Liverpool and Manchester City will cover almost exactly the same distances as they did during last year’s pre-season tours with 12,770 and 12,153 round-trip miles, respectively.

The Reds will also be participating in the Premier League Asia Trophy in Hong Kong alongside Chelsea, Leicester, West Brom and Crystal Palace, before facing Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid or Napoli in Germany and ending their schedule against Athletic Bilbao in Dublin.

After facing United, City play Real Madrid and Tottenham in the US before facing Slaven Bilic’s West Ham in Iceland on 4 August.

Crystal Palace and Leicester have limited their air miles, competing in the Premier League Asia Trophy in Hong Kong, with Palace playing Metz in France en route home and hosting Schalke on 5 August.

Tottenham travelled more distance than any other Premier League club during their pre-season tour in Australia last season but will only clock 10,209 this term.

Spurs face Paris Saint-Germain, Roma and Manchester City during the International Champions Cup in the US and bring their pre-season to a close against Juventus at Wembley.

Stoke (8,064 miles) and Swansea (7,950) will both complete below-average distances during their warm-up schedules - despite both visiting the US.

At the other end of the scale, Burnley will only complete 648 miles during their entire pre-season campaign - not even the direct distance from Land’s End to John o’ Groats.

The Clarets will only travel another 293 direct miles before the Premier League kicks off after completing a 357-mile round trip to play Shamrock Rovers in Dublin.

Watford will travel the second-fewest miles (1,282), followed by Brighton (1,562), Southampton (2,057), Bournemouth (2,227), Newcastle (2,391), Huddersfield (2,620) and West Ham (3,913).

You can watch Liverpool, Leicester, West Brom and Crystal Palace compete in the Premier League Asia Trophy live on Sky Sports 1, kicking off with Leicester v West Brom on Wednesday from 11am

bust common football myths: Scored too early?

Show/hide article…

They often say a team scored too early - but does scoring an early opening goal reduce the chances of winning? We’ve checked Opta data to bust the myth…

Last season, Pedro, Romelu Lukaku and Tom Davies all scored goals after just 30 seconds - and on each occasion their respective team went on to win the game.

But there is a theory that suggests scoring the opening goal too early is less effective than scoring later in the game - instead of building on the early advantage, it gives the initiative to the trailing side.

In total, there have been 2,802 opening goals during the first 15 minutes of Premier League games since 1992 - more than any other interval.

Interestingly, that number reduces in 15-minute increments with 2,173 opening goals scored during 16-30 minutes, 1,710 during 31-45, 1,002 during 46-60, 690 during 61-75 and 516 during 76-90.

But are teams that score the opening goal early less likely to win than a side that scores it later?

The answer: Yes, the odds of winning improve when a team scores an opening goal later in a game - but even an early goal still improves the chances of victory, on average.

Over the last 25 years, teams that scored within the first 15 minutes won 63.28 per cent of the time.

If the opening goal was struck between the 16th and 30th minute, that win rate rises marginally to 66.13 per cent - reaching 70.64 per cent if scored during the final 15 minutes of the first half.

Teams that score the first goal of the game within 15 minutes of the restart have a 72.75 per cent win rate - and there is a considerable rise to 77.68 per cent for sides that open the scoring between the 61st and 75th minute.

That rate soars to 88.95 per cent during the final 15 minutes, which still allows an 11 per cent chance for the trailing team to steal a point or three - so at 1-0 up, it really isn’t over until the final whistle.

Liverpool transfer news: Van Dijk and Keita alternatives Jurgen Klopp should consider

Show/hide article…

While Liverpool have managed to add record signing Mohamed Salah to their ranks this summer it hasn’t been such smooth sailing elsewhere.

Two of Jurgen Klopp’s top targets – Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk and RB Leipzig’s Naby Keita – have proven rather more elusive to bring to Anfield.

The Saints accused Liverpool of illegally tapping up Van Dijk but, even though the club publicly announced they were no longer interested, a move is supposedly still on the cards.

With regards to Keita, Leipzig are demanding a hefty fee if they are to sell the 22-year-old midfielder with the possible outlay possibly around £70million.

However, should the Liverpool fail to get either deal across the line who could they turn their attention to?

Scroll through the gallery above to take at the look at some alternative options.
