Liverpool backed to secure double deal for Naby Keita and Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

That’s according to Steve Nicol who’s backed the Reds to finally land two of their top transfer targets.

Liverpool have already had a £57m bid for Keita snubbed by the Bundesliga outfit.

Starsport understands Jurgen Klopp is ready to offer £60m, though.

Meanwhile Van Dijk was touted as a potential arrival at Anfield earlier this summer.

But the Premier League heavyweights cooled their interest amid tapping up accusations.

Despite the difficulties surrounding both prospective deals, Nicol has backed Liverpool to secure an impressive double swoop.

Transfer news and gossip from Wednesday’s papers - Chelsea eye defensive duo

Show/hide article…

Chelsea have been linked with moves for defenders Ryan Bertrand and Benjamin Mendy.

Antonio Conte, fresh from signing a new two-year contract with the Premier League champions, is looking to bolster his defence ahead of the new season which will see them return to the Champions League.

Former Blues left-back Bertrand, who was sold by Chelsea to Southampton in 2015, is on Conte’s shortlist, according to the Evening Standard . Since leaving Stamford Bridge the 27-year-old has established himself as an England international.

Monaco star Mendy has been strongly linked with a move to Manchester City this summer while Chelsea have already raided the French champions for Tiemoue Bakayoko this month.

EXCLUSIVE Ross Barkley wants £150,000-a-week to join Tottenham — more than they pay their star striker Harry Kane.

Barcelona forward Neymar has reportedly agreed a deal to sign for Paris Saint-Germain . The 25-year-old’s release clause is an eye-watering €222million (£197.3m), which would more than double the world record for a football transfer fee.

Jack Wilshere has been told he can leave Arsenal this summer . England midfielder Wilshere is now considering his options as he has a year left on his Gunners contract, but it seems increasingly likely that he will go.

Rafa Benitez is plotting to keep Newcastle in the Premier League with the help of former SUNDERLAND defender Javier Manquillo .

Real Madrid have bolted a combined £89million price tag on Chelsea targets Alvaro Morata and Danilo .

Manchester United have ended their pursuit of Tottenham’s Eric Dier with the north London club unwilling to sell.

Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny’s £10m move to Juventus will spark a clear-out at the Emirates. The Gunners want to overhaul the squad with defenders Carl Jenkinson, Mathieu Debuchy, Calum Chambers and Kieran Gibbs all set to go.

Newcastle and Crystal Palace are considering moves for West Ham goalkeeper Adrian .

Islam Slimani wants to stay in the Premier League — but fears Leicester are pricing him out of a move to promoted Newcastle .

Liverpool winger Sheyi Ojo is set to go to one of Championship duo Fulham and Middlesbrough on loan . Promoted Newcastle have been interested but have so far failed to come up with the package that the Reds would accept.

Swansea are considering a move for their former striker Wilfried Bony, who is still at Manchester City (Daily Mail).

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte keen on Monaco star Benjamin Mendy and Ryan Bertrand

Show/hide article…

The Italian deployed a 3-4-3 system last season to good effect as the Blues romped home to their second Premier League title in three years.

And key to that formation working was the role played by Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso in wide berths, performing attacking and defensive duties.

Chelsea will compete on four fronts next season, meaning Conte will need more bodies in his squad to rotate and keep his first-choice XI fresh.

Roman Abramovich has already bankrolled the big-money buys of Tiemoue Bakayoko and Antonio Rudiger from Monaco and Roma respectively.

Southampton want Manchester City’s Patrick Roberts on loan

Show/hide article…

Southampton are trying to sign Patrick Roberts on loan from Manchester City.

Mauricio Pellegrino wants to bolster his side’s attack and will ask Pep Guardiola if Roberts is in his plans.

The City boss wants to see how he fares in pre-season before making a decision on whether the 20-year-old can go out on loan again after a successful spell at Celtic last year.

Roberts made 47 appearances in all competitions last season, contributing 11 goals and 19 assists.

The youngster has played just once for City’s first team in September 2015, coming on as a substitute during a 4–1 win against Sunderland in the League Cup.

Roberts wouldn’t be the only player heading away from the Etihad, with Swansea pondering move to bring back old boy Wilfried Bony.

Bony joined Manchester City from Swansea in 2015 for £25million after firing 26 Premier League goals in a season and a half at the Liberty Stadium.

The 28-year-old striker has never settled at the Etihad, scoring just six goals since his move before spending last season on loan at Stoke.

The Ivory Coast international also has interest from France, Turkey and China.

Boufal’s extra effort to impress Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

SOFIANE Boufal put in extra fitness sessions ahead of returning to Saints this summer - with the intention of boosting his chances of winning a starting place in Mauricio Pellegrino’s side.

The Argentine’s predecessor Claude Puel was a big admirer of the attacking midfielder and subsequently a record £16m deal was struck for Boufal, who arrived from Lille still recovering from a long-term injury last August.

Boufal has admitted previously that coming to St Mary’s with the knee problem he’d picked up in France was not the ideal start to life in England.

The Moroccan had to wait until late October to make his debut and, although he demonstrated glimpses of his talent with goals against Sunderland and late Middlesbrough, the 23-year-old never really got going.

He made 30 appearances in all competitions, although only half of those were starts, and played 24 Premier League matches, with 12 of them from the bench.

Failing to shake off niggling injuries, which saw him withdraw from the African Cup of Nations in January, and frustrating performances - mainly as a substitute - when he was available, left Saints fans wondering why the club shelled out so much for the enigmatic attacker.

Boufal himself conceded before the end of last season that it had been hard for him to settle and progression next season was paramount if he was to succeed at the club.

Having put in extra fitness sessions in an attempt to become Premier League-ready before heading back to St Mary’s for pre-season, Boufal will be hoping to keep his head down, impress Mauricio Pellegrino and hope this all starts to pay dividends as he tries to lay claim to a Saints starting role, and win the affections of the supporters.

Having spent big bucks on Boufal, Saints are also keen to give the Paris-born man a chance to fully prove himself and at this stage are in no rush to head out to spend more on attacking options.

The club want avoid another potentially expensive flop, having seen previous record signings Gaston Ramirez, who signed for £12m from Bologna in 2012 and Dani Osvaldo, the fiery Italian who joined from Roma for £14.6m in 2013, fail.

Boufal faces stiff competition for a place, though with friendlies coming up against Brentford, Saint-Etienne, FC Augsburg and Sevilla, there is plenty of opportunity to persuade Pellegrino he’s ready for a place in his team.

James Ward-Prowse has just returned to Staplewood following a break after representing England Under-21s at the European Championships, and he will be very keen to show Pellegrino that he deserves to keep the starting role Puel bestowed upon him last term.

Nathan Redmond will also returned soon from holiday in Dubai and will be confident to claim a starting berth alongside Dusan Tadic in the forward areas.

Pellegrino can also look to youngsters like Josh Sims and Jake Hesketh too, while Manolo Gabbiadini is another option in the attacking midfield department.
