Watch back the best of the action as Southampton Under-23s secured all three points in Premier League 2 with a 6-2 win over Newcastle United at St Mary’s.
A Saints under-23 side containing three full internationals hit Newcastle for six tonight at St Mary’s.
James Ward-Prowse, Pierre Hojbjerg and Jan Bednarek all lined up in a starting XI that also contained the likes of Sam McQueen, Matt Targett and Jake Hesketh.
Saints led 3-0 at half-time and, though the Toon pulled two back, a late goal rush gave Saints a 6-2 success in Premier League 2.
It was from a Ward-Prowse corner that Marcus Barnes, the front-runner in a 4-2-3-1 formation, opened the scoring on eight minutes.
It was a case of deju vu on 17 minutes when Jonathan Afolabi also netted from a Ward-Prowse flag-kick.
McQueen, playing on the left hand side of the attacking trio behind Barnes, made it 3-0 on 37 minutes.
Tom Heardman and Jamie Sherry pulled Newcastle back into contention with goals on 71 and 82 minutes, before McQueen headed in a Yann Valery cross on 86 minutes.
Shortly after, sub Tyreke Johnson got in on the act before Ward-Prowse completed the half-dozen haul direct from a free-kick.
HISTORY suggests that hotshot striker Manolo Gabbiadini could be about to hit a trademark scoring streak – and fire Saints up the Premier League.
The Italy international is known to suffer lengthy spells without goals but comes alive in fruitful streaks.
And after hitting a brace against Newcastle for Saints at the weekend, there is plenty of reason to be hopeful the striker is about to explode once more.
Gabbiadini had struck just one goal in 15 appearances for Saints before his double against the Magpies and if his tradition of scoring in streaks continues, then Mauricio Pellegrino’s men might be about to benefit big time.
On his arrival at St Mary’s in January - after a £14.6m switch from Serie A side Napoli, Gabbiadini had just plundered three goals in as many games in his homeland.
The gifted Italian continued that hot run, which finished when he picked up a groin injury in March, with NINE goals in just seven appearances, including a brace in the League Cup final.
That blistering form came off the back of 18 games with just two goals netted.
But this is typical of the 25-year-old throughout his career.
He can’t score and then something is triggered – confidence perhaps – and he fires in a whole heap of goals.
And after that superb solo effort against Newcastle and the clinical penalty, Gabbiadini could be about to find his flow, and perhaps save Saints’ so far drifting campaign.
The former Sampdoria man hit form last term in sensational fashion and the campaign before he also had two separate runs in which he scored three goals in three games, helping Napoli to a second place finished in Serie A.
Going back further to 2014/15, Gabbiadini struck eight goals in 13 games for Sampdoria at the beginning of that term before his switch to Naples for 13m Euros in January 2015.
For the San Paolo side he hit the ground running with four goals in five games, before the scoring dried up and he recorded just one strike in 12 matches.
But that drought was ended with another streak, as he hit six goals in nine games.
If Gabbaidini is going to score, he will more than likely do it in bursts, rather than spreading it out across a campaign.
Right now, this could be very beneficial to Saints, who are really in need of inspiration and a haul of points to really get some momentum to climb the Premier League.
They have not won in three games in the top-flight and have often struggled to find the net this term.
Casting an eye further back in Gabbiadini’s career to when he was on loan at Bologna, he largely struggled for goals but had one spell in which he started firing, netting five in eight matches.
And with his goal-scoring juices now flowing after the Newcastle game, Gabbiadini could be about to serve up one of his scoring feasts, and just in the nick of time for Saints and Pellegrino.

(Reuters) - Southampton are not happy with their recent string of results but are not worried about their ability to turn their Premier league season around, midfielder Oriol Romeu has said.
Manolo Gabbiadini’s brace helped Southampton come from behind twice to seal a point against Newcastle United at home on Sunday and leave them 11th in the table with nine points.
Southampton’s last victory was a 1-0 result over bottom side Crystal Palace in mid September and the Spaniard was keen to stress the importance of picking up maximum points at home.
”I wouldn’t call it worried but no one is happy,“ Romeu told British media. ”We’re not happy after not winning today and losing other games at home.
“We want to win and we want to be higher. We’ll keep doing our best to get wins because to be where we want to be we need to win more games.”
Romeu said the team has plenty of quality and need to execute their plans better on the pitch.
”If we had the key we would find the solution but there’s so many things in football that are open and you think you can control it but suddenly a game is gone.
“It’s about making sure when teams are coming here to defend we need to break them down better and score more and not let them counter attack.”
Southampton scored three goals in the first half and three more in the last few minutes as they overwhelmed Newcastle United 6-2 in Premier League 2 Division 2 at St Mary’s Stadium.
Goals from Marcus Barnes, Jonathan Afolabi and Sam McQueen put the Saints in command at the break.
Newcastle cut the deficit to 3-2 thanks to Tom Heardman’s header and Jamie Sterry but Southampton made the match safe through McQueen again, substitute Tyreke Johnson and a James Ward-Prowse free-kick.
The win puts Saints fifth, two places above Newcastle.
Southampton travel to Norwich City on Friday while Newcastle host Blackburn Rovers the same day.
FROM Testwood Recreation Ground to a (behind-closed-doors) cup tie against Saints.
BTC Southampton FC are preparing for the biggest match of their lives tonight, against a young Saints side in the second round of the Southampton Senior Cup at Staplewood (kick off 7pm).
Saints are taking part in the competition for the first time since the 1970s to add some romance in its centenary year.
But a small crowd, not much bigger than that which saw BTC come from 2-0 down to beat AFC Gulf Western in the Southampton Premier League at Testwood Rec on Saturday, will be in attendance.
A Southampton FC spokesman said: “Players have been given complimentary tickets so that family and friends can support but it is behind-closed-doors to the wider public because of the limitations of Staplewood”.
BTC’s team includes builders, plumbers and students relishing the chance to play against the club they support.
Manager Steve Byers said: “I’m Southampton through and through as are most of the players.
"Last year some of them even went to Europe to watch the club in the Europa League and a lot of them were at St Mary’s on Sunday.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for players at our level.
“It will be a young Southampton team, we’re expecting to play the Under 18s with maybe a few U23s included.
“But they’re still full-time footballers on the path to playing in the Premier League. It will be a massive step up in quality."
Saints will be playing a BTC team that represented the club’s reserves last season, finishing third from bottom of Junior Two.
The Stoneham League outfit are currently doing very well three levels higher, second in the Premier League after beating Braishfield and Comrades Sports before Saturday’s success.
“The club won the Southampton Premier League last year but that team disbanded over the summer and we were given the chance to make the step up,” explains Byers.
“Last season was our first in men’s football. Most of the players are only 20-21 so they’ve learnt quickly.”
BTC’s glamour tie is their reward for beating Athletico Romsey 4-1 in the first round.
Chairman Paul Strange, from Thornhill, said: “When the draw came out in July we knew what the carrot was if we beat Athletico.
“The players promised me they would get through and were as good as their word.
“It’s a young team that’s come back together after coming through our youth set-up, starting as Under-10s.
“It’s been a big step up, but what they’ve done so far this season is unbelievable.”
Tonight’s game at Saints’ state-of-the-art training ground in Marchwood will be an even bigger step up.
“We’ve got nothing to lose, no-one’s expecting us to go there and win,” added Byers, who works for a plumbing company in Eastleigh.
“A lot of the lads work, some on building sites, but are doing half days to make sure they’re available.
“They’re all looking forward to playing on a Premier League quality pitch.”

Tottenham’s Harry Kane is still the Premier League’s most in-form player, retaining his place atop the Power Rankings ahead of Kevin De Bruyne.
Kane registered only 850 points during Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Bournemouth, but was boosted by performances in his previous four matchdays.
De Bruyne climbed one place into the runner-up spot with two assists during Manchester City’s 7-2 goal fest against Stoke.
Team-mates Raheem Sterling (No 4, up 15 places), Leroy Sane (No 5, up six places) and Gabriel Jesus (No 7, up 22 places) all scored at the Etihad and featured in the top 10.
Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho slipped one place to No 3 after a 0-0 stalemate against Manchester United, with United stopper David de Dea (No 9, up four places) keeping his fourth successive league clean sheet.
Watford forward Richarlison (No 6, down two places) won a controversial penalty during a 2-1 win over Arsenal, while Spurs’ match-winner Christian Eriksen (No 8, up 17 places) and team-mate Kieran Trippier (No 10, up 10 places) are also among the top performers.
Swansea’s Tammy Abraham recorded the highest number of points from matchday eight with two match-winning goals against Huddersfield, while Southampton’s Manolo Gabbiadini soared 294 places after scoring twice during a 2-2 draw against Newcastle.
