McQueen hails quality on show in U23s victory

Show/hide article…

Under the spotlight in a more attacking role, the 22-year-old was tasked with providing added threat in the final third, and he did just that by netting either side of half-time as Saints registered six on the night.

Reflecting on his contribution, the winger said: "Personally very happy to score two goals, a bit of a change of position for me, so to get on the scoresheet was what I aimed for.

"As a team, good performance overall, bit sloppy at times in the second half, but we showed our quality individually.

"They [Newcastle] changed formation which we didn’t deal with, and maybe got a bit complacent at times. We weren’t playing forward enough. We’ll learn from that and next time we’re in a comfortable positing and dominating we’ll finish it off.

“I want to stay in the [first-team] matchday squad, there is a lot of competition for places at this club, which is a great thing. Personally I want to push Berty and keep him on his toes.”

Southampton transfer report: Celta Vigo trying to hijack Saints’ move for Barcelona starlet Paco Alcacer

Show/hide article…

Celta Vigo are trying to hijack Southampton’s move for Paco Alcacer.

The 24-year-old wants to leave Barcelona this January after falling down the pecking order.

The striker arrived at the Camp Nou from Valencia in the summer of 2016 for over £20million but he has made just two league appearances this season.

Southampton are keen on signing Alcacer in January and they are ready to give him the first-team football he craves.

But, according to Onda Cero, Celta Vigo are trying to sneak in and beat the Saints to the Spaniard’s signature.

The LaLiga side are in the market for a forward too and they believe they could win the race for Alcacer by offering him the chance to stay in his home country.

Transfer Rater: Marcos Alonso to Barcelona, Jamie Vardy to Chelsea

Show/hide article…

Things change in the blink of an eye in football. The Football Whispers Index takes the latest transfer rumours and gives them a score out of five; the higher the score, the more realistic and reliable the whisper.

Here are today’s top five emerging whispers. And keep an eye on Transfer Talk for all the latest gossip.

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Weigl is a Manchester City transfer target as Pep Guardiola looks for replacements for Fernandinho and Yaya Toure, who are both out of contract this summer. Spanish publication AS reports the Manchester club will do battle with Barcelona for the 22-year-old, who is already capped for Germany and operates primarily as a defensive midfielder.

Ernesto Valverde is lining up the Chelsea left wing-back as a replacement for Jordi Alba, as he is reportedly not impressed with the full-back’s performances. Lucas Digne is Barca’s current back-up option in the position, but the manager is said to want improvements on his current options.

The Daily Telegraph reports Antonio Conte is ready to replace Michy Batshuayi in January, and Leicester striker Vardy is one of the players on the club’s wish-list. The Italian manager has been unhappy with the depth of quality within his squad since the summer transfer window closed, and will encourage the club to put this right at the earliest opportunity. Vardy heads a list which includes Christian Benteke and Richmond Boakye, but the England international would be seen as the best alternative to Alvaro Morata.

The 21-year-old Portugal striker is one of the players the north London club will look to bring in to replace Alexis Sanchez when the Chilean leaves in 2018. According to the Daily Mirror, Arsenal will look to take advantage of AC Milan’s poor start to the season, and will move for the player if the Italian giants fail to secure Champions League qualification. Despite being in and out of the side since arriving from Porto in the summer, Silva has four goals in two Europa League games this season. He also has 11 goals in his 17 caps for Portugal.

Don Balon claims the unsettled Paris Saint-Germain striker has singled out Pep Guardiola’s side as a preferred destination. They report the Uruguayan believes City give him the best chance of continuing his prolific goal-scoring record, but he’ll first have to find a way past the club’s current star strikers Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero. Cavani has been unsettled since Neymar’s arrival at PSG, and a move away from Paris looks increasingly likely.

One March: Sexuality

Show/hide article…

The club is pleased to announce that it is looking to develop an LGBT fans’ forum, with the help of its supporters.

Throughout the year, the club has been involved in multiple activities to ensure it is a welcoming place for all fans, and its commitment to supporting the LGBT community extends beyond taking a firm stance on stamping out homophobia in all forms.

Following our attendance at Southampton’s first Pride event in 2016, we returned this summer to join the parade and wave the Southampton flag, as part of a tremendous celebration of LGBT rights in the city.

Earlier this year, the club also attended the Stonewall Conference, at Old Trafford, alongside other sporting organisations, to help shape the conversation around making football a more welcoming and inclusive environment for fans and players from the LGBT community.

The club is now keen to increase its dialogue with LGBT supporters, and intends to host a focus group this autumn with the aim of creating an LGBT fans’ forum, which can help enhance the St Mary’s experience.

As well as its fans, Southampton is also receiving support from Pride in Football chairperson Di Cunningham, who contributed to the recent Homophobia in Sport report commissioned by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and who will soon be visiting staff at the club to share her experiences and advice.

Any supporter who is interested in making a positive contribution to the project is encouraged to register their interest in attending the focus group by contacting our Supporter Relations team, either on email at supporterrelations@saintsfc.co.uk or by phone on 02380 711980.

To help us tackle discrimination, as part of the One March equality initiative, we’ve introduced a new text number that will make it easy for you to report any instances of discrimination or abuse that you witness in the stadium or at an away match.

To report anything you see or hear at a game, simply text onemarch to 60060 with a description of what you’ve witnessed and your location so we can tackle it appropriately and discreetly.

Dream Team: Gabbiadini back in new look attack

Show/hide article…

Manolo Gabbiadini (£6.6m) makes a belated return to the Fantasy Premier League Dream Team after scoring twice in Southampton’s draw with Newcastle United.

He sits alongside another cut-price forward, Tammy Abraham (£5.7m), who earns a Dream Team bow in an XI drawn from nine clubs.

He became the first goalkeeper to register an assist this season via a long clearance, which was converted by Michail Antonio (£7.5m). Hart also recorded five saves to score 34 in the Bonus Points System (BPS) – more than any other goalkeeper.

The Arsenal captain earns a maiden Dream Team call-up after his first start at Watford, despite suffering defeat. Mertesacker scored the Gunners’ goal and made a Gameweek high 16 clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI).

The Liverpool right-back returned nine points against Manchester United to earn his second Dream Team appearance. Gomez tallied 35 in the BPS, the top score for FPL defenders, after winning three tackles, supplying three key passes and creating a big chance missed by Emre Can (£5.0m).

The Tottenham Hotspur defender claimed eight points from the narrow win over AFC Bournemouth. Trippier recovered nine loose balls and delivered three key passes. Only team-mate Ben Davies (£5.9m) has supplied more chances among FPL defenders (12 v 16) this season.

The Hornets midfielder earns Dream Team recognition for his fine start to the campaign, as Marco Silva’s side continue to offer budget FPL options. Cleverley scored a dramatic winner to total 10 points, including his first bonus points since the start of last season.

The Dane supplied his second double-figure score of the season in the 1-0 win over AFC Bournemouth. Eriksen has produced a goal or an assist in five of eight matches to climb to the top of the overall FPL standings on 56 points.

His 15 points in the 7-2 defeat of Stoke City was the best individual score in the Gameweek. A goal and two assists continued a prolific run of points that have made the winger the top transfer target. No FPL midfielder has scored more goals (six) and no other player has had more penalty-area touches (63).

A sublime free-kick at Leicester City earned the midfielder a first Dream Team call-up of the season, his third in West Bromwich Albion colours. The 10-point return offered a reminder of Chadli’s FPL potential, but he faces Manchester City (H), Chelsea (H) and Spurs (A) in the next five Gameweeks.

The Brazilian joined Sterling in tallying double-digits in the victory over Stoke City. Jesus has six goals this term and has gained another 120,000 owners ahead of a Gameweek 9 meeting with Burnley, though he could share pitch time with a fit-again Sergio Aguero (£11.5m) in that match.

The loanee earns a Dream Team debut, having matched Jesus with two goals and 13 points against Huddersfield Town. Abraham is the top value forward for points per million (6.8) and his next four home matches total only eight in the Fixture Difficulty Rankings (FDR).

Two goals and 12 points in the draw with Newcastle United announced the Italian’s return as an FPL prospect. Having scored six goals in his first four appearances in all competitions last season, his renaissance as a mid-price forward option would be welcomed by FPL managers.

Davis and Long avoid Gabbiadini showdown

Show/hide article…

SAINTS duo Steven Davis and Shane Long have avoided four-time winners Italy and club colleague Manolo Gabbiadini in the World Cup play-offs.

The Republic of Ireland and Long have been drawn against Denmark in the play-offs while Northern Ireland will face Switzerland for a spot in the finals.

Gabbiadini with Italy, meanwhile, will play Sweden in the two-legged ties.

Martin O’Neill’s Repbublic beat Wales last week to seal their spot as runners-up in Group D while Northern Ireland finished second to Germany in Group C.

The games will take place between 9 -14 November, with Michael O’Neill’s Northern Ireland at home in the opening leg, while the Republic of Ireland travel to Denmark.

The Azzurri travel to Sweden first before the second leg at home.

All Saints Day dedications

Show/hide article…

Each year, we remember players, staff, supporters, family members and loved ones connected to the club who have passed away in the previous 12 months with a designated tribute game.

The forthcoming match against the Clarets will also be our annual remembrance game, as we pay our respects to the fallen.

As part of All Saints Day, we will be publishing short dedications in SAINTS, the club’s official matchday programme, and we invite fans to send in the names, photos and brief messages of no more than 30 words in memory of supporters and associates who have passed away in the last year.

The club will also add its respects to former players and staff who passed away, including Ken Wimshurst, Dave Maclaren, Barrie Hillier, Len Gaynor and Bill Green.

If you would like to include a message in the programme, then please email your dedications with the subject ‘All Saints Day’ to programmesfc@saintsfc.co.uk by midday on Monday 30th October.

We will include as many messages as we can, but please note that all shall be remembered during a period of silence ahead of kick-off on the day.
