Does Mauricio Pellegrino have what it takes to succeed at Southampton?

Show/hide article…

It took Southampton’s executive director Les Reed three weeks to lead the post-season review that concluded with Claude Puel losing his job. But the writing had been on the wall well before that, perhaps from the very moment the Frenchman decided to haul off James Ward-Prowse in favour of centre-back Jeremy Pied, while trailing Stoke 1-0 in their final game of the season.

St Mary’s briefly fell quiet. Then it groaned. And then the chanting began — furious cries of ‘You don’t know what you’re doing’ which lasted until well after the final whistle. The hapless substitution rather summed up Puel’s troubled reign. He may have led Southampton to an eight-place finish and first major final for 14-years, but his patient possession game won him few fans in the south-east.

If his successor, Mauricio Pellegrino, had not already worked out that his new job was going to be about more than just results, it was spelled out to him on his very first day by Reed.

“Mauricio has an excellent understanding of the ‘Southampton Way’, and his style of play and aspiration matches the philosophy, culture and ambition of the club,” he blustered. “We want to play exciting, attacking football, taking the game to our opponents by playing a high-intensity game.”

There was little evidence of all of that good stuff during the 2-2 draw with Newcastle United on Sunday, unless of course the ‘Southampton Way’ means toothless wingers, a lack of ingenuity in the middle and repeatedly dumping cross after cross onto the heads of the opposition’s centre-backs. In fact, eight games into the new season and there has been precious little to write him about at all.

Indeed, what’s most peculiar about the start Pellegrino has made to life at Southampton is how similar they are playing to the season before, under Puel.

The formation has largely remained the same, with its emphasis on wing play despite the continuing struggles of Nathan Redmond, who threw a minor tantrum when withdrawn in the second-half, and Dusan Tadic, who is stillbeing played out of position on the right. At least Sofiane Boufal impressed upon being introduced, and he must now be considered worthy of a place in the starting XI.

Pellegrino did at least finally decide to experiment with two forwards this weekend — with Shane Long playing off the shoulder of goalscorer Manolo Gabbiadini — but the manager’s post-match admission that his side “never controlled the game” may suggest an impending return to a more robust five-man midfield.

Meanwhile the team remain starved of creativity in the middle. Mario Lemina, who arrived for a club-record fee of £15.4m from Juventus this summer, has shown flashes of real promise, but Pellegrino seems reticent to letting him off the leash and frequently waved him back into his withdrawn position from the touchline on Sunday, wheeling his arms around like a frustrated father at a Sunday League game. Alongside him Oriel Romeu has made a poor start to the new campaign, while captain Steven Davis had drifted in and out of the team.

Perhaps the simplest — if far from easiest — way for Pellegrino to make his stamp on this team would be to drop some of the club’s most high-profile players. Fraser Forster’s erratic form has bled over into the new campaign and he was at fault for both of Newcastle’s goals. Ryan Bertrand is going through the motions. Virgil van Dijk is a shadow of the player Liverpool attempted to sign for £60m this summer and no longer deserves to start.

It is still early days, of course. Pellegrino deserves time to implement his methods, even though the club’s fixture list takes a turn for the worse in November, with games against Manchester City, Everton and Liverpool coming thick and fast. And yet the fact remains that Southampton boast a number of fine players who are capable of digging the club out of trouble.

Southampton have come so far since the still-recent days of Rickie Lambert, who joined the then League One side from Bristol Rovers in 2009 and announced his retirement recently. Since then, the club has spent six successive seasons in the Premier League, reaching a cup final and playing in European competition. They are now a model for all newly-promoted teams.

And, although football forums are hardly the most rational corners of the internet, it was rather telling that a threat entitled ‘PELLEGRINO OUT’ sprung up on one popular Southampton site in the hours ahead of the Newcastle match, attracting over 100 responses almost immediately. It is a ludicrous proposition — of course — but indication that expectations have been significantly and rightly raised at St Mary’s in recent years.

Pellegrino has a significant job on his hands to match them.

U23s Report: Saints 6-2 Newcastle United

Show/hide article…

Marcus Barnes struck after just eight minutes to give Saints an advantage, before Jonathan Afolabi doubled the lead shortly before the 20-minute mark and Sam McQueen made it a hat-trick of first-half goals.

Tyreke Johnson’s effort made sure of all three points, and they were not done there as James Ward-Prowse sent a beautiful free-kick crashing beyond Freddie Woodman to make it 6-2, after goals from Tom Heardman and Jamie Sterry for the visitors had threatened a fight back.

Radhi Jaïdi’s side included young first-team players such as Jan Bednarek, Jack Stephens, Ward-Prowse, McQueen and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg as well as Alex McCarthy in goal.

And Saints set the tempo from the off, as Afolabi’s burst beyond Kyle Cameron saw him tee up Stephens with a cut back, only for the defender’s effort to be blocked behind early on.

From the resulting corner, Stephens turned provider when he kept a corner alive, with Barnes tapping home from point-blank range.

The pressure showed little sign of relenting, and it was another corner which helped give Saints valuable breathing space. Stephens was involved again at the back post, with Afolabi showing killer instinct to finish inside the box.

Jaïdi’s young charges almost had a third goal on 32 minutes, when clever work from Højbjerg set Barnes away, only for Woodman to get a vital touch on his rising shot.

Their reward came minutes later though, when Yan Valery’s right-wing cross found its way through to McQueen at the far post and he headed home with aplomb to extend the advantage.

The second-half continued in a similar vein, with Callum Slattery being introduced for Jake Hesketh as he continues his build up to fitness.

It was the visitors who fashioned the most meaningful chance, when Luke Chapman’s driving run saw him unleash a thunderous effort which cannoned off the underside of the crossbar.

The Magpies did reduce the arrears though on 71 minutes through Heardman’s towering header from a corner, before Jamie Sterry profited from McCarthy taking too long on the ball to make it 3-2.

But McQueen’s second of the evening from a tight angle and Johnson’s pinpoint drive across goal with his left foot late on made things far more comfortable.

That before Ward-Prowse rounded off proceedings with a superb free-kick to make it six at St Mary’s, where 471 supporters watched on.

Maya Yoshida: Southampton must pick up points before December

Show/hide article…

Southampton defender Maya Yoshida has warned his team-mates they must pick up points before their nightmare Christmas calendar kicks in.

Saints end November away to Manchester City and then face Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United in December, as well as a crunch trip to south coast rivals Bournemouth.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s men salvaged a morale-boosting 2-2 draw at home to Newcastle on Sunday after Manolo Gabbiadini’s double, the second from the penalty spot, cancelled out strikes from Isaac Hayden and Ayoze Perez.

The result leaves Southampton with nine points from eight games played and only three points above the bottom three, albeit with kinder tests against West Brom, Brighton and Burnley to come.

‘Fortunately we have another home game coming up next week to make amends, this period between now and the next international break is very important,’ Yoshida told the club’s official website.

'We need to pick up points now because December holds some very difficult fixtures for us.

‘West Brom are a strong side and consistently in the top half of the table. It’s a big opportunity for us to show our character.’

Newcastle would have moved up to seventh if they had held on for victory at St Mary’s and the visitors will feel disappointed to have given away a penalty 15 minutes before the end.

Florian Lejeune was the guilty party, bringing down Shane Long, and striker Perez admits it felt like a wasted opportunity. Newcastle host Crystal Palace on Saturday.

‘It was a little bit disappointing that we drew, but once again the team showed great character knowing what we had to do and doing our best when we could,’ Perez told the official club website.

'To be honest, they didn’t create too many chances - clear chances - but they were trying and trying, and sometimes that gives you something at the end of it.

‘We took the lead twice, which is important in this competition and away from home, but we got a point and now we’ve got to think about the next one.’

Jaïdi on Saints’ emphatic victory at St Mary’s

Show/hide article…

The hosts were three goals to the good at the break, before being pegged back early in the second period, but Jaïdi’s side finished the stronger after a flurry of late finishes marked a resounding win.

Speaking in the immediate aftermath, Jaïdi said: "It is a win, we scored a lot of goals and obviously we had some of the first-team boys who performed really well and showed a good example of what you need to do at this level.

"We started really well, controlled the game and scored three goals in the first-half. That gave us a good opportunity to show some calm and composure.

"We were lucky to score the fourth goal, which got us back in the game and you saw what happened, we scored a further three goals after that.

But we need to give what is required in certain scenarios, we could have controlled the game more. Newcastle changed their shape and they wanted to make it difficult, especially after scoring their second goal.

“But I think we had all the tools to win this game and it showed tonight.”
