Liverpool backed to complete defender transfer in January

Show/hide article…

Liverpool today rejected a loan bid from the Saints for Anfield outcast Sakho.

That’s according to ex-Arsenal star and pundit Ray Parlour.

Ultimate XI: Football stars who almost signed for Liverpool

THE JANUARY transfer window is in full swing and Liverpool are no strangers to big signings - even though they have also failed to land some big names throughout the years.

“I’m sure they’ll try to get a deal with Liverpool over the line”

The Reds aren’t interested in a loan move and want to sell the France ace on a permanent deal - and want £20m for their man.

And Parlour has praised Sakho, revealing he’s confident a deal will be struck by the end of the month.

Liverpool reject Southampton’s loan swoop for unwanted defender Mamadou Sakho

Show/hide article…

Liverpool have rejected Southampton’s attempt to sign defender Mamadou Sakho on loan.

Saints were keen on signing the Frenchman until the end of the season but the Reds are only interested in letting him leave permanently.

The 26-year-old is firmly out of favour with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and last turned out for the Anfield outfit nine months ago in a 4-0 derby win over Everton.

Sakho will be allowed to leave this month if a suitable offer is received, but Liverpool are determined to get a fee close to £20m, the Liverpool Echo report.

A number of clubs have expressed an interest in the former Paris Saint-Germain man, including Premier League strugglers Swansea and Crystal Palace, as well as Spanish side Sevilla.

Southampton are in the market for a centre-back with captain Jose Fonte having handed in a transfer request. Fonte is in talks over a potential move to West Ham.

Liverpool have already allowed one fringe centre-back, Tiago Ilori, leave the club this month. The Portuguese U21 international completed his transfer to Reading on Wednesday.

Transfer FIGHT! Fiorentina eye deal for Southampton and West Ham target Manolo Gabbiadini

Show/hide article…

Fiorentina will fight Southampton and West Ham for Napoli forward Manolo Gabbiadini - if Nikola Kalinic moves to China.

Kalinic is wanted by Chinese Super League side Tianjin Quanjian, who have failed with recent bids for Chelsea’s Diego Costa and PSG’s Edinson Cavani, and they are reportedly ready to meet his £38.5million release-clause.

The Croatian’s departure would leave Fiorentina short upfront and as a result they are tracking a number of targets.

And top of their shopping list, according to reports in Italy, is Gabbiadini - who is attracting plenty of interest from England too.

The Italian was wanted by Everton in the summer, while more recently Stoke, Southampton, West Brom and West Ham have all made enquiries.

Fiorentina are big fans of the 25-year-old too and they believe he could snub offers from the Premier League to join them as he may prefer to stay in Italy.

Jose Fonte move to West Ham or West Brom draws closer with Southampton captain ready to leave

Show/hide article…

It appears Jose Fonte is heading west, with both West Ham United and West Bromwich Albion now in advanced talks to sign the Southampton captain before the January window closes after he submitted a transfer request.

At the same time West Ham have cooled their interest – at least for now – in Brentford striker Scott Hogan with the Premier League club unsure they want to go close to the £15million valuation for the 24-year-old.

West Ham have had a series of bids rejected and have offered over £11million including add-ons. Brentford want more, however.

Hogan was identified as a key signing by West Ham’s head of recruitment Tony Henry but it is understood that manager Slaven Bilic would prefer the club to bring in players with Premier League or top-flight experience at this stage of the season and certainly if the fee is going to be close to the one being demanded by Brentford.

West Ham have also – so far – been frustrated in their attempts to sign Robert Snodgrass from Hull City with bids of £3million and now £6million rejected for the Scotland international.

GOSSIP: Sakho loan bid rejected as Fonte looks to exit

Show/hide article…

SAINTS have had a loan bid rejected for Liverpool central defender Mamadou Sakho, according to the Mirror.

The national newspaper report that Saints were keen on bringing in Sakho on a temporary deal, but the Reds are “only interested in letting him leave permanently”.

The 26-year-old, who has a £20m price tag, has been heavily linked with a move to St Mary’s during this month’s transfer window, with the France international earmarked as a replacement for wantaway captain Jose Fonte.

Claude Puel admitted after last night’s 1-0 victory over Norwich in their FA Cup third round replay that Fonte is investigating an “opportunity” to leave.

This morning’s reports by Sky Sports indicate that West Ham are leading the chase for the Portuguese international’s signature.

Talks are said to be taking place between the clubs, although a deal for the Saints skipper is not thought to be nearing a conclusion.

Hammers boss Slaven Bilic said: "[Fonte is] not having a medical today. We are not talking about transfers, we are working on some though.

“There are one or two players we need, it won’t be easy, but we are trying. Hopefully have something to announce in 24 hours.”

Fonte has been told he won’t play for Saints while his future is in doubt.

The 33-year-old has asked the leave St Mary’s after rejecting an offer of a pay rise as well as a new contract.

Several offers on table for Southampton’s Fonte, says Puel

Fonte, who has less than 18 months left on his contract, has not featured for Southampton since he handed in a transfer request after repeatedly rejecting improved terms.

“I think he has some opportunities: he studies these opportunities,” Puel told British media.

“And for Southampton it’s the same. We will see if Jose leaves Southampton; we will see over the next few days.”

Puel remained tight-lipped over whether Southampton would dip into the market to replace Fonte and was coy on young defender Jack Stephens’ first-team prospects.

“It was important to see him in his main position of centre-back, having had a couple of starts at right-back,” Puel added.

“It’s interesting to see Jack Stephens in this situation for example. Because we know Jose Fonte’s situation, he might leave the club, so it’s important to see Jack’s performances.”

Southampton, who are 13th in the Premier League, host 15th-placed Leicester City on Sunday.

Long pounces to hint at FPL value

Show/hide article…

Shane Long (£6.1m) provided Southampton’s winning goal ahead of a Gameweek 22 home encounter with Leicester City, as the striker’s Fantasy Premier League stock begins to build.

Long strengthened his claim for regular starts by providing the decisive strike in a 1-0 FA Cup third-round replay victory over Norwich City.

Having failed to name the same first XI in consecutive matches since arriving at St Mary’s Stadium, manager Claude Puel again made numerous changes on Wednesday evening.

Along with Maya Yoshida (£4.2m) and James Ward-Prowse (£5.0m), Long was one of only three players to retain their starting berth from the loss at Burnley.

Yoshida continues to look an assured pick in the heart of the Southampton defence – he has now started six successive matches in all competitions.

Defensive duo Virgil van Dijk (£5.8m) and Ryan Bertrand (£5.4m) both missed out due to knocks, while Puel named attackers Dusan Tadic (£7.0m) and Nathan Redmond (£5.8m) among the substitutes.

Having scored in each of his last two home starts in all competitions, Long looks to have established himself as Puel’s preferred striker ahead of a very favourable run of opponents.

According to the Fixture Difficulty Rankings (FDR), five of the Saints’ next six Gameweeks score no more than two, with home encounters against Leicester City and West Ham United allied with trips to Swansea City, Sunderland and Watford.

Last night’s victory sets up a tie with Arsenal in the FA Cup fourth round on 28 January.

That takes place three days after an EFL Cup semi-final second leg meeting with Liverpool and three days before a Gameweek 23 match against Swansea City, suggesting further rotation in the Southampton line-up.

Elsewhere on Wednesday, Philippe Coutinho (£8.3m) was handed a first start since November as Liverpool edged into the FA Cup fourth round with a 1-0 win over Plymouth Argyle.

Manager Jurgen Klopp rested regular starters, making nine alterations to his first XI.

Only Trent Alexander-Arnold (£4.3m) and Divock Origi (£6.6m) were retained from the weekend draw at Manchester United.

Typically, Coutinho made a telling contribution, supplying the assist for Lucas Leiva’s (£4.4m) winner via a corner.

Replaced just after the hour-mark and drafted in by more than 66,000 FPL managers ahead of Gameweek 22, Coutinho is now in the frame to face Swansea City on Saturday.

Liverpool will meet Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup fourth round on 28 January.

This takes place three days after their EFL Cup semi-final encounter with Southampton and three days prior to a vital Gameweek 23 home encounter against league leaders Chelsea.

West Ham close in on £8m Jose Fonte signing

Show/hide article…

West Ham are poised to sign Southampton defender Jose Fonte, despite interest from West Brom.

It is understood that the clubs are close to agreeing a fee of £8million, potentially rising to £10m with add-ons.

The 33-year-old Portugal defender, who has yet to agree personal terms with the Hammers, has 18 months left on his contract but has not been offered a new deal by the Saints.

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic said today: “I like what Arsene Wenger says, ‘we are not talking about transfers, we are working on transfers’, so I am not talking about names.

“All I can say, though, is that we hope to settle something in the next 24 hours.”

Speaking after Southampton’s FA Cup replay win over Norwich City on Wednesday, manager Claude Puel admitted that Fonte was considering offers.

“I think he has some opportunities: he studies these opportunities,” said Puel of Fonte. “And for Southampton it’s the same. We will see if Jose leaves Southampton; we will see over the next few days.”
