Southampton defender Jose Fonte fielding several ‘opportunities’ - Puel

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel says Jose Fonte is fielding several "opportunities’’ to leave Southampton in the January transfer window.

West Ham have been rumoured to be interested in want-away Saints defender Fonte, and manager Puel has accepted there are several offers on the table for the 33-year-old.

Saints ground past Norwich 1-0 in Wednesday’s FA Cup third round replay courtesy of Shane Long’s last-gasp bundled goal, to book a home clash with Arsenal on Jan. 28.

Euro 2016 winner Fonte’s future remains of top interest however, with Southampton boss Puel predicting progress on a possible deal in the week ahead.

"I think he has some opportunities: He studies these opportunities,’’ said Puel of Fonte.

"And for Southampton it’s the same. We will see if Jose leaves Southampton; we will see over the next few days.’’

Puel handed England Under-21 cap Jack Stephens his first start in his preferred position of centre-back against Norwich, but remained coy on whether the 22-year-old is yet ready to step into Fonte’s shoes.

Refusing to confirm Saints would chase a replacement for Fonte, Puel said: "It was important to see him in his main position of centre-back, having had a couple of starts at right-back.

"It’s interesting to see Jack Stephens in this situation for example.

"Because we know Jose Fonte’s situation, he might leave the club, so it’s important to see Jack’s performances.’’

Fonte now has less than 18 months to run on his Southampton deal, and has squabbled with the club over a potential contract extension.

The long-serving defender now looks set to leave the club, with Southampton’s board therefore desperate to hang on to the highly-prized Virgil van Dijk.

Saints are understood to have slapped a £50 million price tag on Van Dijk to discourage suitors in this transfer window.

Fonte’s potential departure would heap strain on Saints’ defensive options, with just Maya Yoshida and Stephens to back up Van Dijk.

Yoshida captained Southampton in their flimsy win over Norwich, with Puel praising the 28-year-old’s form.

"Maya’s made good progress since the beginning of the season,’’ said Puel.

"It was important to give him the captaincy to give him confidence, it’s good for him, for his spirit.’’

Norwich boss Alex Neil admitted his injury-hit side had little choice but to adopt a defensive approach at St Mary’s, before insisting Robbie Brady will not leave Carrow Road on the cheap.

Burnley are among a number of clubs circling Ireland midfielder Brady, but Neil believes Norwich will only let him leave on the club’s own terms.

"We came with a gameplan to sit behind the ball,’’ said Neil.

"We had all our midfielders suspended, injured or at the African Nations Cup.

"We had to put a makeshift team together but I couldn’t have asked any more of them.

"We would have liked to have offered a lot more going forward, but to lose it in the manner in which we did at the end, I felt for the players.

"There’s been ongoing negotiations and contact from other clubs about Robbie [Brady], but I’m not going to be specific.

"So far it’s not at the level we would expect.

"It will be at our timescale, it will be at our terms.’’

West Ham in talks to sign Jose Fonte from Southampton

West Ham in talks to sign Jose Fonte from Southampton

West Ham are in advanced talks to sign defender Jose Fonte from Southampton, according to Sky sources.

The Portugal international, who has 18 months remaining on his contract at St Mary’s, expressed his desire to leave Southampton earlier this month.

Fonte revealed on social media in December he had not rejected a new deal to stay at Southampton and confirmed he would not be offered fresh terms by the south-coast club.

The 33-year-old, who helped Portugal win Euro 2016 last summer, has played 286 times for the Saints since joining from Crystal Palace in 2010.

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic is looking to bolster his defensive ranks this month, with Winston Reid, James Collins and Angelo Ogbonna currently his only recognised senior central defenders.

The Hammers also remain in negotiations for Brentford forward Scott Hogan and have had an improved £6m bid for Robert Snodgrass rejected by Hull City.

THE VERDICT: Not much Cup magic here

Show/hide article…

It was the game nobody wanted. It was a game probably nobody much enjoyed either.

There has been a lot of talk about the magic of the FA Cup in recent days, and whether the old competition’s glamour is somewhat fading these days.

Those hardly souls who braved the cold and turned out at St Mary’s last night were not filled with a spectacle that left them with cup fever.

Saints made it through – just – but in one of the least entertaining games the stadium has ever seen.

It truly was an abysmal game of football.

Norwich boss Alex Neil was quite honest pre-match in his comments. He was focussed on the league, and not much else.

Saints boss Claude Puel was more fulsome in his talk about Saints’ possibilities in the competition, but, even so, that a defensive lapse had meant this replay took place in a packed month was a frustration.

The fact the ground was more than half empty for the game said all you needed to know about the appetite for a match that on paper looked bad, and in reality was no better.

In the end it was a Saints win, but so unconvincing it hardly had the feeling of being a momentum changer in a stuttering period.

The first half really was a particularly turgid affair.

Norwich, depleted for the game by injury, set up with three centre halves, but essentially a flat back five.

That told you all you needed to know. They were aiming to be solid, get men behind the ball, and with the imposing figure of Kyle Lafferty up front, they always had a direct way to move it quickly up top.

Once more at St Mary’s, the emphasis was on Saints to be the aggressors and the ones to make things happen.

They were, as you would expect given Norwich’s stand-off approach, slightly more on top, but, for a team that had effectively named their two big guns in terms of available strikers, not especially dangerous going forward.

That was not helped by the feeling that Puel could have tried to get some movement from his side by playing Jay Rodriguez and Shane Long nearer each other, rather than the former through the middle and the latter hugging the left touchline.

In a half that barely had a chance worthy of the name, the best Saints could manage was a couple of near post shots, one from Josh Sims and another from Rodriguez, both of which were saved with a relative degree of comfort by Michael McGovern.

Saints’ lack of attacking thrust was perhaps best summed up by Jordy Clasie’s excellent right wing cross midway through the half which intersected the Canaries defence in the heart of their own area, but absolutely nobody had taken the gamble of a forward run to meet it.

The second half was fractionally better.

Saints did start to actually create a little more, albeit nothing exceptional until they grabbed the only goal in injury time to at least, mercifully, avoid another half an hour of it.

The list of sort of Saints chances included easy saves for McGovern from Sims and James Ward-Prowse before Long cut inside and zipped a shot narrowly wide.

Rodriguez hooked a shot over McGovern but across the face of the goal before Ward-Prowse whipped a free kick round the outside of the wall but into the side netting.

After Sims lobbed the keeper but also the goal, sub Nathan Redmond’s extra impetus had an effect.

Norwich really looked reluctant to play extra time, but whether Saints could hold things together well enough to get the ball in the net was another question.

Redmond had one shot parried away, and missed the target with another, and Sam McQueen had a shot saved, before Long got a goal which provided relief to all in St Mary’s.

McQueen did superbly to just reach a ball and sweep in a cross from the left by-line.

It looked like it might be another moment of frustration as Long headed at McGovern from point blank range, but the striker reacted quickest to turn home the rebound from a couple of yards out to allow everybody to go home.

The game nobody really wanted will not be one talked about for very long.

Even the result didn’t really feel as uplifting as it might have done.

Puel can argue that he got the job done. A win is a win after all, and in a cup progress is, ultimately, all that matters.

But even allowing for a side with some youth in it, and with plenty of changes, it is still a sign of Saints’ attacking problems that they toiled so long before getting a winning goal against a team there for the taking.

After four Premier League defeats in a row, they need much better when Leicester come to town at the weekend.

Puel to stick to his guns for the Gunners

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel admitted he will most likely stick with a young side when Saints host Arsenal in the FA Cup fourth round a week on Saturday.

Saints landed the home tie against the Gunners after edging out Norwich in a third round replay thanks to Shane Long’s injury time winner at St Mary’s last night.

Puel named six academy graduates in a side that contained eight changes for the Canaries, and with the tie against Arsenal coming between the EFL Cup semi-final second leg at Liverpool and an important Premier League game at Swansea, he is likely to follow a similar pattern in his selection.

He said: “We will see every time. We need to play every three days, just as Southampton have to play all these games, and we will see for the recovery for any player, and we will see for Arsenal.

“We will continue with a good balance between experienced players and young player and it’s important I think for Southampton to continue this work and develop these players.

“All these possibilities gives more opportunities for the future and it is interesting for example to see Jack Stephens in this situation.

“We know with Jose Fonte’s situation particular and perhaps he leaves the club, it is important also to see Jack and other players in this situation.”

Puel was pleased to get past Norwich, but confessed it was not an easy game for his side.

“We are happy because it is always a difficult game against Norwich,” he said.

“It was good management in the first half perhaps without the good result to have other situations.

“I think we can do a good second half with many chances, good reasons, a lot of opportunities without perhaps the clinical, but it was a good management of the game. “Difficult. A packed defence for 90 minutes and I think for one time in this moment all the players can be happy.

“It is important now to play against Arsenal, another opportunity for my players and a mix between experienced players and young players and this is very interesting for us to develop the academy players.”

One disappointment for Saints was the attendance, which on a chilly midweek only just broke the 13,000 mark, despite a hefty cut in the ticket prices.

“We play many games, and an important game arrives on Sunday (against Leicester) and it was cold,” reflected Puel.

“It was not the Premier League and I think it’s normal since the beginning of the season all the fans come, outside away and at home. The support is fantastic.

“We played against Inter Milan at the San Siro with 8,000 fans which is very interesting.

“To come here in all these competitions I understand it’s not easy to come.”

Yoshida deserved the captaincy, says Puel

Show/hide article…

Yoshida took the armband for the game against the Canaries in the Emirates FA Cup, as he captained a young Saints side to victory at St Mary’s.

Saints boss Puel says his displays and progress since the start of the campaign made him a worthy stand-in in the absence of José Fonte and Virgil van Dijk.

“Maya made a very good season, playing well in every moment and with good concentration, winning duels and giving satisfaction,” Puel said.

“He made good progress since the start of the season.

“With all of the young players around him it was important to give him the captain’s armband.

“That gave him the confidence and it’s deserved for him because of his excellent spirit for the team.”

Puel also praised Jack Stephens, who partnered Yoshida at the heart of the defence.

“It was good work from Yoshida and Stephens because it is important to keep the good concentration,” Puel said.

“To keep a clean sheet with few chances for the opponent is important. It was good for Jack because he played two games at right-back.

“It was important he started in his first position. I’m happy he stayed with a clean sheet and good concentration.”

Where does Premier League clubs’ revenue come from?

Manchester United topped Deloitte’s Football Money League but seven other Premier League clubs also made the top 20.

Manchester City (fifth, up one place), Arsenal (seventh, no move), Chelsea (eighth, no move), Liverpool (ninth, no move), Tottenham (12th, no move), West Ham (18th, new entry) and Leicester (20th, new entry) recorded the highest revenues in England.

United’s financial success - they made a record £515m in revenue - was attributed to their return to the Champions League in 2015/16 and recording considerable commercial growth during the calendar year.

But where does the revenue come from? We have broken down the revenue streams for each Premier League club in the top 20…

Premier League transfer news and rumours: Liverpool midfielder Lucas to turn down chance to return to Brazil

Show/hide article…

Here is a round up of today’s Premier League transfer news and rumours.

Our man Luke Edwards has got the latest on the main stories of interest on this wonderful Thursday morning.

Robert Snodgrass has become the Premier League’s most in-demand player after Burnley became the latest club to register an interest in the winger.

Hull City are reluctant to let the Scotland international leave this month and new manager Marco Silva has made it clear he wants to keep hold of him since he replaced Mike Phelan, but Snodgrass is tempted to force a move.

Burnley are willing to offer £7.5m for the 29-year-old, but are competing with Middlesbrough, Sunderland, West Brom and West Ham to sign him.

Snodgrass, who has been unsettled for some time at the Kcom Stadium, has scored seven goals and provided three assists in a poor Hull team and his departure would be a huge blow to their survival hopes.

Liverpool reject loan bid from Southampton for Mamadou Sakho - Sky sources

Show/hide article…

Liverpool have rejected a loan bid from Southampton for Mamadou Sakho, according to Sky sources.

Sky Sports News HQ understands that the Reds’ intention is to sell the 26-year-old centre-back, who has struggled for games under Jurgen Klopp this season.

The Saints are preparing to lose one of their first-choice centre-halves this month in Jose Fonte, who is the subject of talks over a move to West Ham.

Fonte, whose contract at St Mary’s expires in the summer, told Southampton earlier this month that he wanted to leave and manager Claude Puel confirmed they have received several inquiries for the 33-year-old.

Puel’s fellow Frenchman Sakho, meanwhile, has not made a single appearance for Liverpool this season.

He was sent home from Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the United States due to concerns over his attitude, something that was not helped by a social media outburst last September.

Sakho was withdrawn from Liverpool’s U23 team to play Manchester United on Monday.
