Premier League star backed to make big transfer to top-four club

Show/hide article…

That’s according to Premier League ace and pundit George Boateng. The Southampton star, 25, has been linked with a move away from St.Mary’s. Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool have all been linked with the Holland international.

“I think Van Dijk is a phenomenal defender and he’s ready to play in the top four” Southampton today had a loan bid rejected for Liverpool’s Mamadou Sakho as they attempt to sure up their defence with Jose Fonte set to leave. And Boateng has hailed Van Dijk, claiming the Saints are looking to bring in the Reds ace as they’re preparing for the defender’s inevitable departure. “I think Van Dijk is a phenomenal defender and he’s ready to play in the top four,” Boateng told Sky Sports.

“I watched him play at Arsenal away a few weeks ago and at home to Liverpool and he was man of the match. “I understand why Southampton are looking to bring Sakho in. “Liverpool know Southampton have to find a centre-back because they are preparing for the departure of Van Dijk - if it comes this month.”

Puel provides pre-Leicester team news

Show/hide article…

Midfielder Steven Davis remains unavailable with a knock after missing games against Burnley and Norwich City in the Premier League and Emirates FA Cup respectively.

Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Bertrand were not risked in that midweek cup success against the Canaries, but will be back in contention to face the reigning champions.

Puel said: “For the injuries, Davis is not available and Sofiane Boufal as well as the longer injuries like Charlie Austin, Alex McCarthy, Matt Targett and Jake Hesketh.”

Long sends Saints into round four

Show/hide article…

Just as it seemed it would be heading to extra time, on a bitterly cold night at St Mary’s, Long converted at the second attempt to seal a 1-0 win against Norwich City.

The visitors, who set up in a 5-4-1 formation, were happy to soak up pressure, as Saints found it difficult to find a way through before Long bundled the ball home to seal victory.

Claude Puel made eight changes from the side that lost 1-0 at Burnley a few days previously, with Maya Yoshida, James Ward-Prowse and Shane Long the only ones to retain their starting spots.

Harry Lewis was again handed a start in goal, as he was at Carrow Road, with Saints naming six former Academy players in their line-up, while Yoshida took the captain’s armband for the first time in his Saints career.

Before the game, a round of applause was held in memory of the late Graham Taylor, with the crowd rising to honour the former England manager.

With the contest under way, neither side were able to carve out any sort of opportunity in the opening 20 minutes or so.

Saints did begin to apply some pressure soon after, though, as Josh Sims burst into space on the right side of the area, before seeing his low shot saved at the near post by Norwich keeper Michael McGovern.

Jordy Clasie’s superb, angled delivery from deep in the 27th minute had the potential to lead to a breakthrough, but no one could quite get on the end of it.

Jay Rodriguez then went close shortly afterwards, as Sam McQueen’s exquisite pass sent him away down the inside-left, but McGovern was equal to his low shot across goal.

Norwich did threaten in the 42nd minute, as Alex Pritchard teed up Robbie Brady from a free-kick, but he fired over.

Immediately after that, Rodriguez looked to have snuck in behind the Canaries defence, only to be brought down, but referee Jonathan Moss waved play on, much to Saints’ annoyance.

It proved to be the last action of the half, as the sides went into the break level.

Saints were the livelier after the interval, with Sims bursting through on an angle in the 55th minute and then squaring past McGovern, with his pass hitting Norwich defender Ivo Pinto and spinning agonisingly wide of the post,

Long then went within inches of opening the scoring in the 66th minute, as he cut onto his right foot just outside the area and sent a low, angled shot fizzing wide of the far post, with McGovern at full stretch.

Puel made his first changes of the night with 20 minutes left, as former Norwich player Nathan Redmond and Oriol Romeu were sent on in place of Rodriguez and Harry Reed.

Some of the crowd thought Saints had finally made the breakthrough moments later, as Ward-Prowse bent a brilliant free-kick from 25 yards towards the top corner, but it just went the wrong side of the post and hit the side netting.

The hosts were looking the more likely to break the deadlock, with Sims off target as he attempted to chip an out-of-position McGovern from a tricky angle, while Cuco Martina fired over from 25 yards.

Redmond then drew a good save from McGovern, after Martina’s cross had found him at the back post.

It looked as though the game would head into extra time, but Long had other ideas, as he bundled the ball home at the second attempt from McQueen’s cross.

Arsenal await in round four, as Saints will bid to knock the Gunners out of a second domestic cup competition.

Jaïdi calls for reaction against Bristol City

Show/hide article…

Southampton Under-23s coach Radhi Jaïdi is keen to see a response from his side when they face Bristol City on Friday night.

Saints head into the Premier League Cup encounter off the back of 3-1 league defeat to Arsenal, and Jaïdi wants to see an improved performance.

“I am expecting a good and positive reaction from our younger boys,” he explained.

“When we watched back the Arsenal game, we performed well in parts but obviously conceded some sloppy goals. The focus has been on our concentration and defending.

“The boys understand now what is required, so hopefully they will deliver that and keep the consistency of what we do. That’s what it is about.”

Jaïdi’s side have already faced Bristol City in the competition’s reverse fixture.

Saints suffered a 2-1 home defeat back in September, but Jaïdi is confident of turning that around on Friday.

“Despite the injuries in that game, we were in control,” he continued.

“We played our football and created some chances, but when we had some injuries we struggled a little bit and conceded from set-plays.

“We are going to come up against a team that are pretty physical upfront and will play direct if we can press them well.”

West Ham close to signing Southampton defender Jose Fonte for £8m

Show/hide article…

West Ham are close to signing Southampton defender Jose Fonte in a deal worth £8million.

The Hammers saw a £7m offer rebuffed by the Saints on Wednesday, but both clubs have been locked in talks on Thursday.

The Hammers then submitted an improved bid of £8m, which has been accepted by the Saints.

Talks will now commence over personal terms, with West Ham expected to offer Fonte a deal worth £65,000-per-week.

The defender has 18 months left on his current contract with the Saints but handed in a transfer request this month.

Southampton’s director of football Les Reed says Fonte had the chance to sign improved terms but has now asked to leave the club.

And Claude Puel said Fonte is fielding several ‘opportunities’ to leave Southampton in the January transfer window.

‘I think he has some opportunities: he studies these opportunities,’ said Puel of Fonte.

‘And for Southampton it’s the same. We will see if Jose leaves Southampton; we will see over the next few days.’

West Ham to tie up £8m Premier League raid in matter of hours - reports

Show/hide article…

The 33-year-old centre-back recently handed in a transfer request to the Saints and has been linked with several Premier League clubs. The London Evening Standard claim that the Hammers are poised to complete their swoop for the Portugal star and the transfer should go through very soon. They claim the two clubs have agreed a £8m deal for Fonte which could rise to £10m with add-ons.

The report adds that the ex-Benfica ace has not settled on personal terms with the Hammers yet and that West Brom remain interested. West Ham boss Slaven Bilic today hinted that his club are set to complete a major transfer but refused to name names. He said: "I like what Arsene Wenger says, ‘we are not talking about transfers, we are working on transfers’, so I am not talking about names.

“All I can say, though, is that we hope to settle something in the next 24 hours.” Fonte has 18 months left on his current Southampton contract and has not been offered fresh terms. He joined the south coast club in January 2010 from Crystal Palace for £1.2m and has since made over 280 appearances for them.
