Transfer news: West Ham, Leicester, Southampton, Watford and West Brom all chasing Napoli striker Manolo Gabbiadini

Show/hide article…

West Ham have joined Leicester City, Southampton, Watford and West Bromwich Albion in the race to sign Napoli striker Manolo Gabbiadini.

The Hammers are in the market for a striker and, according to reports in Italy, Slaven Bilic has earmarked the 25-year-old as his top target.

Gabbiadini has scored five goals in 19 appearances in all competitions for Napoli this season and has been heavily linked with a move away from the Italian outfit during the transfer window.

The Hammers are set to lose wantaway Dimitri Payet to Marseille in January, and are interested in boosting their attacking options before the end of the month.

Bilic’s team also cut short Gabbiadini’s compatriot Simone Zaza’s loan deal during the window.

Napoli want between £17m and £22m for Gabbiadini, whose present contract with the club runs until 2019.

New Arsenal signing Cohen Bramall faces up to ‘big challenge’ ahead

Show/hide article…

New Arsenal signing Cohen Bramall faced up to the “big challenge” ahead of him having made his first appearance for the club on Monday.

Signed from non-league Hednesford Town just last week, the 20-year-old played 83 minutes at left back in Arsenal U23’s 3-1 victory over Southampton in Premier League 2.

Speaking to the club’s official website following the game, the debutant was quick to recognise the difference in quality.

“It was so fast… it was hard to get used to,” he said “I just need to do well now, keep training and keep getting better and better. Hopefully, I can get to where I need to be in the future.”

“It’ll be a big challenge, because from Hednesford in the league I played in, it was pretty slow and I had a lot more time on the ball than I did here. It was fast and I need to be better and think quicker on the ball.”

"I think in the next game that I play, I’ll be a lot more confident. I can trust my team-mates more and just hopefully get to know the players a lot better. “It was amazing. I’m just happy that in my first game for Arsenal that we got the three points really.”

Bramall was given a contract at Arsenal having impressed during a short trial with the club before Christmas. Prior to this, he had been working in a car factory.

Transfer news: Verdict on every Premier League club’s most expensive summer signing – from worst to best

Show/hide article…

The January transfer window might be dominating the back pages at the moment, but it’s unlikely to compete with the big bucks spent in the summer.

We saw the world record broken when Paul Pogba returned to Manchester United for an astonishing £89m, while a whole host of other glamorous names opted for a move to (or within) England’s top flight.

So, we’ve decided to look back on the heavy spending of the summer market, delivering our verdict on each Premier League club’s most expensive signing.

Transfer ALERT! Southampton and West Ham chasing Borussia Monchengladbach defender Julian Korb

Show/hide article…

West Ham and Southampton are both vying for the signature of versatile Borussia Monchengladbach defender Julian Korb.

Reports in the German press claim the Germany Under-21 international could be set for a move away, though no official approaches have been made yet by either the Hammers or the Saints.

Korb can be utilised as a right back or in midfield, two positions that both West Ham and Southampton are short of cover for.

The 24-year-old has 18 months left on his contract with Gladbach and, after enduring a difficult start to the season, the club could well cash in on their prized asset before the January window shuts.

Both West Ham and Southampton are frontrunners to land the defender but other clubs from around Europe may make last minute attempts to derail those plans.

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

Saints welcome Norwich City to St Mary’s for Wednesday night’s game (7.45pm GMT), with a place in the fourth round and a chance to host Arsenal up for grabs.

Puel: Focus is all on Norwich

Show/hide article…

Saints will look to end a run of four consecutive Premier League defeats when they host the Foxes on Sunday, before they aim to book a place at Wembley when they visit Liverpool for the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final.

Before those two fixtures, though, Puel’s side must take on Championship club Norwich tomorrow in a third-round replay, at St Mary’s.

“The second leg against Liverpool is an exciting game – different to the Premier League, which we have on Sunday, but now the focus is just on this game and to prepare for it well, with good spirit, and it’s exciting for the players,” said Puel.

"It’s an important game for us, for the squad. It’s true, we play a lot of games, but I think it’s interesting. The first game was a disappointment. It was a shame to concede this goal right at the end. It’s important now, at home, to make the difference and try to get a good result.

"There will be some rotation, but I have said always that we try to find a good level and a good balance between experienced players and young players.

“We are continuing to improve with young players, but it’s important always to have a good result at the end.”

Southampton vs. Norwich City - Football Match Preview - January 18, 2017 - ESPN

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Puel wants his side to learn from the mistakes they made against Norwich when the teams meet again for their Emirates FA Cup third-round replay on Wednesday.

The Sky Bet Championship side levelled the scores in stoppage time on January 7 to force a replay, and the Saints boss wants his players to put the disappointment of the 2-2 draw behind them.

Southampton have won only one of their last six games in all competitions, beating Liverpool in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg, and host Norwich on the back of a 1-0 defeat to Burnley on Saturday.

Puel said: "Norwich was another disappointment.

"It was a game where we had good control of the ball but without many opportunities.

"It was the same as many games - we are unlucky.

"Many games are the same, without opportunity for the opponent and 30 seconds from the final whistle we conceded another goal.

“It was a shame because we had all of the ball and now it’s important to finish this work at home, in front of our fans, and to give a good answer and get a good result.”

Puel has become known for tinkering with his starting line-up each week, and the Southern Daily Echo writes that the Saints manager has made 179 changes during the 31 games he has been in charge this season.

The Southampton boss has never named the same side in consecutive matches, and admits there will be a mixture of young and experienced players who will face Norwich on Wednesday.

Puel said: "It’s normally a mix. It’s important to continue the work, to improve with these young players and also to put around them experienced players to maintain a good level with the emotion, the physicality and the quality.

"I think with all of these games in January it’s important also to make rotation, but of course we want to qualify - it’s important for all the squad to continue this work.

"It’s important to give game-time to different players, to continue to improve - it’s important for Southampton.

“A good result would be a good thing for the squad at this moment. With Leicester, it will be another game.”

Southampton are hopeful that midfielder Steven Davis will have recovered from a knock which kept him out of the Premier League game against Burnley at the weekend, but Sofiane Boufal (knee), Charlie Austin (shoulder), Matt Targett (hamstring), Alex McCarthy (hamstring) and Jeremy Pied (knee) remain sidelined.

Norwich are struggling with injuries and suspensions, and boss Alex Neil will be wary of this weekend’s Sky Bet Championship clash with Wolves.

Midfielder Jonny Howson misses out with the calf injury he sustained at Rotherham and Louis Thompson is not yet ready to return from a pelvis injury. Steven Whittaker has got a tight hamstring and may not be risked.

Striker Nelson Oliveira was sent off against the Millers and starts a suspension, while Martin Olsson completed a move to Swansea on Tuesday.

Graham Dorrans is out for a couple of months with a knee injury and fellow midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu is away with DR Congo at the African Nations Cup, meaning Neil is down to the bare bones.

Youngsters Ray Grant and Ben Godfrey are included in the squad.
