Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Harry Kane, Diego Costa or Alexis Sanchez? Premier League Golden Boot contenders assessed

Show/hide article…

We look at the contenders battling out the closest Premier League Golden Boot battle in years, with just two goals separating the top six marksmen.

Four of those are tied on 14 goals following a weekend which saw doubt cast over Diego Costa’s future while his main rivals all found the net.

Everton’s Romelu Lukaku and Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe also bagged to climb on to 12 goals apiece, while Sergio Aguero is far from written off on 11 goals.

Here’s a look at the seven main contenders’ credentials…

When Zlatan Ibrahimovic failed to score from 12 shots against Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton on October 29 some dared to question whether, at 35, he could deliver in England. That was also the third successive Premier League game in which Manchester United had failed to find the net and Swedish superstar’s sixth.

Those questions have since been answered in typical emphatic fashion, with 10 goals in as many games firing Manchester United back into the title race. Sky Bet punters certainly had faith in his abilities, with more bets on him to be top goalscorer than any other player, while his 14th goal of the season saw him leapfrog Diego Costa at the head of the market.

Last season’s Golden Boot winner has attracted the second most interest. The 22-year-old had only just scored his second goal of the season when an ankle injury ruled him out until November 6, but he returned to get Tottenham’s campaign back on track.

His equaliser at Arsenal was the first of 12 in 11 appearances, with braces against West Ham, Swansea and Watford followed up with Saturday’s hat-trick against West Brom. With second-placed Spurs looking genuine title contenders again and Kane boasting a better goals-per-minute ratio than any of his rivals, his credentials to top the charts yet again are looking very strong.

What a difference a weekend can make. Diego Costa was the 13/8 favourite to be the top goalscorer heading into the last round of action but speculation over his future and an absence from Chelsea’s trip to Leicester has seen his price drift significantly.

Suggestions that the change of the foreign player allowance rule in China might have killed off chances of a £30m-per-year move will be of great relief to those who backed him at 12/1 before a ball was kicked, not to mention the 13.72 per cent of managers with him in Sky Sports Fantasy Football teams.

Olivier Giroud’s recent heroics have seen Alexis Sanchez’s efforts go under the radar somewhat of late, but the Chile star has arguably been the top performer of the season.

His 14 goals are complimented by seven assists, more than any of the other contenders. Having been forced to operate from a deeper role in recent weeks, it remains to be seen whether his goal ratio will take a hit from a secondary striker role behind Giroud but he is second to none after 21 games.

Everton’s role in the title race may be little more than upsetting the front runners but that has not stopped Romelu Lukaku from getting involved in the Golden Boot battle. The Belgian, who has now reached double figures in the league for a fifth straight season, netted for the third successive time in all competitions after the Toffees got stuck into Manchester City on Super Sunday.

With some exciting January business already completed at Goodison Park, the 23-year-old looks a good bet to beat his personal best of 17 Premier League goals. However, only six per cent of Sky Bet punters believe he can see off the competition and top the charts.

With a remarkable 60 per cent of his side’s 20 goals this season, Jermain Defoe is once again almost single-handedly keeping Sunderland’s survival hopes alive this season.

The 34-year-old has made a mockery of his age and club’s status to be in the Golden Boot race, although Sky Bet clearly are not convinced he can maintain such form with their odds of 25/1. That’s barely shorter than his pre-season price of 33/1, although that perhaps says more about the depth of competition than his own efforts.

The Argentina star took up his usual place as pre-season favourite to be the Premier League top goalscorer but has struggled to keep pace. Featuring in enough games has once again been his problem, although it has been suspension rather than injury which has limited his playing time, while Manchester City’s struggles certainly haven’t helped.

Pep Guardiola’s men have crumbled amid the testing run they find themselves in, with Aguero only managing to score once in four as his side have suffered loses to Chelsea, Liverpool and Everton. With the league’s best defensive side in Tottenham visiting the Etihad Stadium next, Aguero has some rare critics to answer this weekend.

Best of the rest

Dele Alli is the only other player with double figures this season, having fired a stunning seven goals in four games, but Sky Bet are suspect about his chances of maintaining such form at 40/1.

At the same price and on nine goals is Eden Hazard, who enjoyed a fine run of five in five across October and November but has just one in his last five. Sadio Mane (80/1) is also on nine goals but is losing ground as he competes in the African Cup of Nations, while Christian Benteke and Olivier Giroud, on eight and seven goals respectively, the only others shorter than 100/1.

Southampton star speaks out on Jose Fonte and Virgil van Dijk after transfer speculation

Show/hide article…

James Ward-Prowse claims Jose Fonte’s transfer request ‘has not really been a distraction’

The Saints skipper has not played since handing in a transfer request and will sit out tonight’s FA Cup third round replay at home to Norwich.

The fallout over Fonte has coincided with a run of four straight Premier League defeats for Claude Puel’s men.

But Ward-Prowse said: “Jose is a massive figure within the dressing room but he’s also a top professional.

“It has not really been a distraction because we as a group know it’s a situation between Jose and the club.

Belief is key for Saints says Cedric

Show/hide article…

CEDRIC Soares has urged Saints “just to keep working and believe” as they look to resolve their goal-scoring problems and mixed form.

Saints defeated Liverpool in the League Cup semi-final first leg last week, but have lost four in a row in the Premier League.

Claude Puel’s side face Norwich in their FA Cup third round replay at St Mary’s tonight, knowing that a victory will give them a boost ahead of a key run of games.

Saints welcome bottom-half rivals Leicester City on Saturday in the league, before the second leg of the League Cup at Anfield a week today.

Cedric believes it’s just a matter of time before the goals start flowing and Saints record a vital Premier League win.

“We just need to keep working and believe in what we do and the goals are going to come,” he said. "It’s not going to be like this forever.

"We created a lot and I think we were much better than the opponent today (in 1-0 defeat at Burnley).

"We deserve a win and we just need to believe in what we’re doing and keep doing it.

“And in time we are going to win for sure.”

Cedric isn’t prepared to wallow in their recent run of defeats.

“This is what I’ve been taught, when something goes wrong when you are clear of all the prinicipals of what you’re doing, you just need to keep going,” he said.

“We know the Premier League and three or four wins we are back there [in the top half], so we just need to keep going,” he added.

“Always we have the support of our fans. They were amazing again tonight (at Burnley) and we keep doing the job properly the goals are going to come and the three points as well.”

The Portuguese international was keen to reassure fans that during a long season a blip like this is not unusual.

“It’s normal. We didn’t have a great performance before, today was not the same case,” he said.

“But before there were two or three games we didn’t play so good. This is normal in football you also have these kind of moments.”

Puel to give youth another chance

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel will not be swayed from fielding a young side to face Norwich tonight despite Saints’ recent poor form.

Saints host the Canaries in an FA Cup third round replay after being held to a 2-2 draw at Carrow Road.

Saints have lost their last four Premier League matches, drawn with Norwich and beaten Liverpool in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg since Christmas.

Puel could do with some good news this evening, with a win securing a home tie with Arsenal in the fourth round, but with a big double header at home to Leicester in the league and away to Liverpool in the semi-final second leg just on the horizon, he will brave making changes again.

That will likely see Sam McQueen, Jack Stephens, Harrison Reed and Josh Sims given a chance to start against Norwich tonight, while some more experienced players will get a rest.

Puel said: “Normally it will be a mix.

“It is important to continue the work, to improve with these young players and also to put around them experienced players to maintain a good level with emotion, with the physical and with the quality.

“For all this game in January it is important also to have this rotation.

“Of course, we want to qualify. This is important for all the squad and to continue this work.

“It is just a moment with other competitions other than the Premier League. For the moment in this game we know a good win, a good thing, is important to continue this work and to give different players time to improve.

“This is important for Southampton and after of course a good result will be a good thing for the squad in this moment.

“We will see if there will be another game.”

Saints were left frustrated that they didn’t get the job done first time at Norwich, and allowed Steven Naismith the chance to head home in stoppage time to give them yet another game in January.

Puel does not want to see the same mistakes again tonight.

“Norwich was another disappointment at the final,” he reflected.

“It was a game with good control – control of the ball, control of the game – with a lot of opportunities and it was the same.

“Many games where we are unlucky, but many games are the same without opportunities for the opponent and just in the final 30 seconds we took a goal, a second goal.

“It was a shame because we controlled the game and the ball, and now it’s important to finish this work at home in front of our fans and to give a good answer and a good result.”
