Stephens on Norwich test

Show/hide article…

Steven Naismith’s stoppage time header denied Saints in the 2-2 draw at Carrow Road, after Virgil van Dijk and Maya Yoshida goals had given them the advantage.

But with a home tie against Arsenal in the offing for the winners, Stephens is looking to put things right against Alex Neil’s men.

He said: “Conceding so late was particularly disappointing, especially after dominating the game but we’re still in the cup and we’ve got a chance to beat them and progress.

“For 75-80% of the game we were on top so we probably did deserve to win but that’s football and we switched off and conceded at the end.

“They’ve had a couple of bad results in the league so they’ll look at this and see it as a chance to progress and take their mind off that.

“It’s a similar situation for us as well so it should be a good game on Wednesday.”

Transfer Rater: Ashley Young to China, Ryan Bertrand to Man City

Show/hide article…

Things change in the blink of an eye in football. The Football Whispers Index takes the latest transfer rumours and gives them a score out of five; the higher the score, the more realistic and reliable the whisper.

Here are today’s top five emerging whispers. And keep an eye on Transfer Talk for all the latest gossip.

The Daily Mail report that Birmingham are in talks with Swansea about signing Wayne Routledge. New Blues boss Gianfranco Zola is said to want to add a winger to his side this transfer window and has already had a £4 million bid for Crystal Palace’s Bakary Sako turned down. Routledge would be a cheaper option, with Swansea reportedly demanding £3m for the 32-year-old.

German newspaper Bild says Wolfsburg youngster Anton Donkor is set to move to the Midlands to join up with Steve Bruce at Aston Villa. The 19-year-old winger is yet to make his first-team debut for Wolfsburg and, according to Bild, he has been told he’ll have limited first-team opportunities at the Bundesliga side this season, so is looking to move on. The Germany Under-20 international is currently under contract until 2020.

With Pep Guardiola’s first season as Manchester City boss not going to plan, the Daily Telegraph claims that he is looking to bring in as many as six new players, including Ryan Bertrand. With both Aleksandar Kolarov and Gael Clichy in their 30s, the 27-year-old Bertrand represents a younger option. The Southampton left-back signed a new five-year deal last summer and there is no chance of him moving in January, but Guardiola could plan a double summer swoop on Saints for Bertrand and Virgil van Dijk, who has also been linked with a move to the Etihad.

After only starting in two Premier League games for Manchester United this season, Ashley Young is a target for Shandong Luneng, according to the Sun. And although United are reluctant to sell, the Chinese Super League side are thought to be lining up a huge offer for the 31-year-old. Young would get a lucrative contract to see out his career with a club who are managed by former Fulham boss Felix Magath and have Graziano Pelle and Papiss Cisse in their ranks. But is he keen?

With Morgan Schneiderlin moving to Everton, West Brom have set their sights on Hull midfielder Jake Livermore. Baggies boss Tony Pulis previously said the club has money to spend in January on the right players and the Guardian reports that his side have made a £10m bid for the 27-year-old. In Marco Silva’s first league game in charge of Hull, Livermore only made the bench. Pulis, who tried to buy the midfielder while he was Crystal Palace manager, may have seen a window of opportunity.

Could Jose Fonte be recalled in the FA Cup?

Show/hide article…

JOSE Fonte could be set for a recall to the Saints squad with Virgil van Dijk a doubt for tomorrow night’s FA Cup third round replay against Norwich at St Mary’s.

Claude Puel said that the wantaway central defender, who has asked to leave in this month’s transfer window, will not be selected while his future is in doubt, unless he is forced to pick him.

With Van Dijk a doubt for the Canaries match, along with left-back Ryan Bertrand, Puel’s options are potentially limited at the back.

That could lead to Fonte being welcomed back into the squad at least, for the first time in four matches.

Saints could well deploy Jack Stephens and Maya Yoshida together at centre back with Cuco Martina and Sam McQueen either side at full-back, if Van Dijk is unfit.

But there may also be a temptation to give Fonte a run out.

Puel, talking about Fonte’s situation earlier this month, said that he may call on the Portuguese if circumstances dictate.

He said: “The situation for the next games is this, but I know that if we need with the urgency of the situation I know I can count about Jose, because it’s a professional player, important, and I know he gives the best on the ground. This is important.

“I respect Jose and I know we can count on him if the situation is like this.”

Van Dijk and Bertrand will be assessed ahead of tomorrow’s game, while Steven Davis is expected to remain out injured.

DOES your Premier League team’s captain actually play for your club often?

The role of the skipper seems to have diminished in recent years, with many not even playing regularly for their teams.

Some have been sidelined by injury and have found it difficult to break back into the team.

Others are experienced stars who are kept by their clubs more for their influence in the dressing room than on the pitch.

Claude Puel keen to finish job when Norwich visit in FA Cup replay

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel hopes Southampton have learned lessons ahead of their FA Cup third-round replay against Norwich on Wednesday.

Puel’s side looked set for a place in the last 32 at Carrow Road, only for Steven Naismith to pop up two minutes into added time and force a replay.

Southampton have struggled for form in the last month, winning only one of their last six games in all competitions which came against Liverpool in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg last week.

Puel said: "Norwich was another disappointment.

"It was a game where we had good control of the ball but without many opportunities.

"It was the same as many games - we are unlucky.

"Many games are the same, without opportunity for the opponent and 30 seconds from the final whistle we conceded another goal.

“It was a shame because we had all of the ball and now it’s important to finish this work at home, in front of our fans, and to give a good answer and get a good result.”

Puel will again rotate his squad when the Canaries visit St Mary’s, adding to his reputation as a new ‘Tinker Man’.

The Frenchman is yet to name the same team in successive matches and will bring a number of youngsters in to face Alex Neil’s side.

He added: "It’s normally a mix. It’s important to continue the work, to improve with these young players and also to put around them experienced players to maintain a good level with the emotion, the physicality and the quality.

"I think with all of these games in January it’s important also to make rotation, but of course we want to qualify - it’s important for all the squad to continue this work.

“It’s important to give game-time to different players, to continue to improve - it’s important for Southampton. A good result would be a good thing for the squad at this moment.”
