Poole boss hails Charlie Austin’s “magnificent gesture”

Show/hide article…

TOM Killick hailed the “magnificent gesture” of Saints striker Charlie Austin in aiding Poole Town’s fight against demotion, admitting: “We’d still be in the Wessex League if it weren’t for him.”

Austin’s old club Poole must find £70,000 by the end of March if they are to avoid being forced out of the National League South just a year after being promoted.

The reigning Southern League champions were given the green light to stage Step Two football at Tatnam on the proviso the venue met certain ground-grading criteria by March 31.

Austin has now offered to help by giving his old club use of his box at St Mary’s Stadium for Saints’ game against Arsenal next month, which Poole could use to entertain potential investors.

Saluting Austin’s generosity, Killick said: "Charlie rang me straight away when the story surfaced and wanted to help.

"People have ridiculously suggested he should personally put money in despite the money he generated for the club in terms of his sale and subsequent move.

"We’d still be in the Wessex League if it weren’t for him, so what he’s done with the use of the box is a magnificent gesture and we’re hoping it can assist in raising a significant sum.

“That’s typical Charlie. He’s always done the right thing by the club.”

Things are going well on the pitch for the Dolphins with Saturday’s 2-0 win at Margate lifting them third in the table. Steve Devlin scored both Poole goals.

Willard: We need to be more clinical

Show/hide article…

Saints suffered a 4-2 defeat away to Reading in their previous Premier League 2 fixture, and Willard feels there was plenty his side could learn from that match.

“We are just going to try and improve from the Reading game,” started Willard.

“We need to start both halves well against Arsenal and try to be more clinical – in both the attacking and defensive areas.

“We were disappointed to lose against Reading as we felt we were the better team. But there’s plenty to learn from and look at ahead of Monday.”

It will be a test against familiar foe for Willard, who spent a large proportion of his formative years with the Gunners.

Not that any of that alters his determination to pick up three points for Saints.

“I enjoyed my time there,” he continued.

“It was a good eight or so years, but at the end of the day I play for Southampton now and we want to beat them.

“We need to get three points on the board. We want to get some wins behind us and get as high up the table as we possibly can.”

Joey Barton relishing home comforts back at Burnley

Show/hide article…

If there is no place quite like home for Burnley that also rings true of Joey Barton. Few players polarise opinion in the way that Barton does – with his chequered past and the “circus” surrounding him militating against him in some quarters.

However his return to Turf Moor has been a welcome repatriation for player, manager, club and supporters. There are no recriminations in this parish over Barton’s decision to leave east Lancashire last summer, only delight at his homecoming.

His redoubtable contribution to promotion last term has not been forgotten and his match winning cameo on Saturday only fortified the reservoir of respect he has already earned in claret and blue. Now unbeaten in the last 25 games with Barton in their team, Burnley are better off with than without him.

At the age of 34 and heading towards the twilight of his career, Barton admits that he is intent “on enjoying every minute” of his football “because it could all stop tomorrow,” particularly in his case as there is still the significant matter of an FA misconduct charge looming large which may limit his playing involvement between now and the end of the season.

Against that backdrop, Barton passionately acknowledges the debt of gratitude that he feels he owes to Burnley and his manager Sean Dyche.

Joey Barton admits his career is a circus after scoring late winner against Southampton

Show/hide article…

But after the rent-a-quote midfielder made a stunning return to the Premier League, Burnley boss Sean Dyche looks like one hell of a ringmaster.

Barton seemed washed up at 34 after being booted out of Rangers and facing an FA misconduct charge for allegedly betting on more than 1,000 games.

But Dyche’s faith in the player who helped him win promotion last season proved well-placed as Barton struck a stunning 78th minute winner from a free-kick.

That means that whatever other baggage Barton may bring with him on his return to Turf Moor, he has already been worth a three points in what is looking likely to be a successful bid to stay in the top flight.

Barton said: “The gaffer has shown an incredible amount of faith in me, in amongst the circus that kind of goes on in and around me.

“This club has shown commitment to me by bringing me back.

Romeu believes Saints have the right attitude

Show/hide article…

ORIOL Romeu insists that Saints have the “right attitude” to thaw their frosty winter Premier League form – and is adamant they’re not heading for a battle at the bottom of the elite.

The defensive midfielder admitted Saints’ fourth straight league defeat at Burnley was hard to take, after the visitors dominated and performed well but failed once again to convert their chances.

The Spaniard reckons that Claude Puel’s men must continue to channel the winning style they showed in their triumph over Liverpool last week in the League Cup semi-final first leg, as they try to jolt their league form back to life.

“We have the right attitude,” he stated. “We are doing well coming from a massive game last Wednesday (Liverpool). It was good to keep going in that line [of performance].

“The main thing is to keep going in the same mentality (as against Liverpool) and keep doing the same job.”

Saints slid glumly into the bottom half of the Premier League at Turf Moor, but Romeu is adamant that they are not gearing up for a scrap for survival.

Instead, the 25-year-old is hoping Saints’ current position (13th) will prove lucky for them as they aim to build a platform to return to the higher reaches of the top-flight.

“We’d like not to battle or to struggle or fight for those things [at the bottom],” he said. “We have a good enough squad to fight for higher places in the table.

“Hopefully we can prove that and come back as soon as possible.”

You’d be forgiven for having déjà vu on Saturday, as once again Saints dominated, created numerous chances, looked in complete control, but somehow contrived to lose.

Eye rolls would have been shared between the shivering Saints supporters as Joey Barton’s deflected free-kick span past a rooted Fraser Forster on 79 minutes at a chilly Turf Moor.

“It’s hard to take,” said Romeu. “It was a difficult match. I think we did everything to stop them, but they won a free-kick. I went to stop their winger (Ashley Barnes) from shooting from outside the box and conceded a free-kick. From there, the ball was deflected and went in.

“Apart from that, everyone was quite controlled and we had a few chances to score, but we needed to take them.

“Looking back at the other defeats we had away, today we were a bit better, but we didn’t win again. We need to be better.”

Saints have not found the net in four of their past five Premier League away games, and Romeu is more than aware of their downfalls.

“When you lose you can point to so many things, but I think we always have to think we can do better,” he said.

“If they score once, you have to score twice and that’s what we have to do now – score more goals.

“We had chances to put it in today. In the first half there were good shots, and the second half with crosses, but the ball didn’t go in and they had one free-kick and the ball went in.

“They didn’t have many chances that I remember. I don’t remember Fraser (Forster) having to save us today.

“Looking at the chances, we played good and we need to be a team that puts its chances away, not one that doesn’t.”

THE VERDICT: Inevitability to Saints frustrations

Show/hide article…

It’s like deja vu all over again.

The difficulty with Saints at the moment is trying to figure out whether the results are more frustrating than the feeling of inevitability as to how they will arrive.

Burnley this weekend was a classic case in point.

Despite the Premier League being supposedly the best in the world, you arrived at Turf Moor knowing exactly what to expect, the likelihood of how Saints would react, and had a fair guess as to how things might end.

Probably the majority of people were about right.

Burnley were dogged, they were defensively strong, they worked hard, but had little quality up front. They made things difficult and were then hoping to find a goal from somewhere, maybe a set piece.

Saints were always likely to match them for defensive solidity and work rate – despite what some critics may say you cannot for one second accuse them of not trying – then have the chance to use their superior quality on the ball.

They would likely dominate possession, have plenty of the ball in good areas, create a few half chances, not score, and end up ruing a lack of cutting edge in the final third come the final whistle.

We have just seen it so often this season.

In the end, however, there was almost a frustrated shrugging of the shoulders from Saints fans watching their side as Joey Barton scored what proved to be the only goal of the game on 78 minutes.

The match had passed according to the script. Once again Saints came away with manager Claude Puel feeling they had done enough, frustrated over a lack of goals, and one scrappy finish had been the difference.

It is an annoying way to lose at any point. It is even more dispiriting when you feel as if it is more likely than not that the game will follow a certain pattern before a ball is even kicked.

Puel has really run out of ways to talk about it. His post-match comments do sound like an almost verbatim repeat of what we have heard so many times during the campaign.

Whether he is stuck for answers away from the glare of the spotlight only results and performances can ultimately prove.

What is for sure is that the context of the upcoming games has shifted yet again, as it seemingly does on a bi-weekly basis given the fixture pile-up.

It is now four Premier League defeats in a row for Saints, a run you feel they have to halt with a first top flight victory in a month when they host Leicester on Sunday.

However, just a few days after that they travel to Liverpool for the EFL Cup semi-final second leg, and carrying a slender lead.

In terms of Saints’ season and actually achieving something meaningful, Liverpool, you feel, has to be their top priority. That would normally mean resting a few players for Leicester.

But four losses in a row in the league – and the particularly costly ones against West Brom and Burnley – suddenly mean Puel probably feels he cannot afford taking a slight risk with the team selection to face the Foxes.

Does, then, he scrap a rotation policy he has stuck by all season? If not, where does he play his strongest team?

Most fans would urge Liverpool. Saints look as destined for midtable now as they have for the majority of the season, and so focussing on a cup you have already got so deep into makes sense. Puel, however, will not want to risk this Premier League run turning from troublesome to something more serious.

Saints did not create a glut of chances at Burnley, but they did have a few glimmers.

Dusan Tadic twice found himself in a shooting position at the far post inside the area in the first half but fired across goal and wide on the first occasion, with the second shot also looking off target but cleared by Ben Mee anyway.

James Ward-Prowse couldn’t get enough action on a header while Tadic had another effort blocked in what was about the sum of what could be described as the first half chances for either side.

Saints still had the better of the openings in the early stages of the second period, again they were hardly clear cut though with Nathan Redmond and Shane Long both putting wide.

Fraser Forster had to deal with a couple of efforts from distance from Burnley, but wasn’t overly worked.

However, he was beaten on 78 minutes as sub Joey Barton hit a low central free kick from 25 yards that somehow got through the wall and found its way into the net with the Saints stopper down late, presumably unsighted.

Saints might have levelled in the dying moments, but Virgil van Dijk could only head straight at Tom Heaton from a corner, while the Burnley stopper made a fine double save to keep out Jay Rodriguez and the follow-up from Josh Sims at his near post.

It was the inevitability of it that was as crushing as the result itself, and felt like such a bump back to reality after the pleasant surprise of the Liverpool win.

Now Puel must find a way to change the narrative to stop this kind of thing continuing to happen.
