We need to stand together, says Højbjerg

Show/hide article…

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg has told his Southampton teammates to rally a response in the next week of matches in all competitions, starting with Wednesday’s Emirates FA Cup replay against Norwich.

Højbjerg was part of the Saints team which lost a fourth Premier League match in succession with a 1-0 defeat at Burnley on Saturday, and says the only way to get over that disappointment is to “stand together” for the next run of games.

Saints host Norwich in the FA Cup, followed by Leicester City in the Premier League before travelling to Liverpool in the crucial second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final, and Højbjerg believes building momentum can get them back on track.

“First of all, as a team we need to stand together and stand up for each other because this is what for me made us good in the first half of the season, and it’s what makes us Southampton Football Club,” he said.

“If we don’t stand together, we have a big problem.

“We have fantastic guys in the team and good spirit.

“When you lose it’s difficult sometimes to believe in that and that is normal, we are human, but you need to really stick together and we will bounce back, we will come back against Norwich, against

Leicester, and of course against Liverpool. We will rise again, not doubt on that.”

Saints were defeated at Burnley despite having more chances in the contest, and the Dane says there’s work to be done on the back of that match to be ready for the next fixtures.

“We didn’t control it so much and what can I say, you lose 1-0 in Burnley when you think you’re better than them and you have more quality, but the score sheet shows something else,” he explained.

“We need to get back home and analyse it, work on it, and then look forward to the FA Cup and the next Premier League game because you lose that one, but there’s a new game Wednesday and Sunday and we need to be sharp and concentrated.”

Report: Burnley 1-0 Saints

Show/hide article…

Buoyed by Wednesday night’s victory against Liverpool in the EFL Cup, Saints controlled possession and had the majority of the chances, but they were made to pay late on.

After James Ward-Prowse, Dušan Tadić and Shane Long had all gone close, Barton’s deflected free-kick from 20 yards was enough to earn Burnley all three points.

Claude Puel made three changes for the clash with the Clarets, as Long, Ward-Prowse and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg all came into the side.

Steven Davis missed out completely with injury, while Jordy Clasie and Jay Rodriguez, back at Turf Moor for the first time since moving to Saints from Burnley, dropped to the bench.

Saints made a bright start against the hosts, with Ryan Bertrand and Tadić both delivering dangerous crosses, that Burnley just about dealt with, inside the opening ten minutes.

At the other end, the Clarets created their first chance just before the 15-minute mark, as Steven Defour’s corner was headed narrowly wide by Ben Mee.

Tadić was looking like the man most likely to give Saints the lead, as he twice went close in quick succession from a similar angle.

The Serbian playmaker’s first effort flashed just wide of the far post, after being picked out by Nathan Redmond, before he was denied by Mee’s clearance on the line after controlling Cédric’s cross at the back post and firing back across goal.

Ward-Prowse was then denied by a save from Tom Heaton, as Puel’s men finished the first half strongly in Lancashire, without the reward they perhaps deserved.

The second half began at a quick tempo, with both sides looking to find the opener, and it was Saints who created the first real chance, as Redmond was picked out in the box by Højbjerg, but he failed to add to his goal against Liverpool on Wednesday as he fired wide.

For Burnley, a low free-kick from Defour was the closest they came, but Fraser Forster was equal to the effort.

After Long had headed just wide, Saints went even closer to opening the scoring, as Ward-Prowse’s free-kick was played back across goal by Virgil van Dijk, but Burnley were able to scramble the ball clear inside the six-yard box.

Having been introduced five minutes previous, Barton delivered the killer blow for the hosts, as his deflected free-kick, following a foul by Oriol Romeu on George Boyd, beat Forster in the Saints goal.

Van Dijk and substitutes Jay Rodriguez and Josh Sims were all denied by Tom Heaton late on, with the Burnley 'keeper doing superbly to deny the latter, as Saints pushed for an equaliser.

There would be no late response though, as Saints slipped to a fourth-straight defeat in the Premier League.

Jose Mourinho wants this player at Man United: Player aware of interest, he’s keen on deal

Show/hide article…

The Sun report the Manchester United boss is keen on landing the 33-year-old. West Ham are also after Fonte, but he’ll wait for United to make their move first. Fonte wants out of Southampton.

He’s handed in a transfer request and could now be on the move. The Portuguese has been with Saints since their League One days.

The centre-back has played a vital role in their rise, and he’s been rewarded with international recognition. And he could now be set for a big pay day at Old Trafford. United were eyeing a deal for Fonte last summer but a deal failed to materialise. But Mourinho is reportedly now ready to get a transfer over the line.

Liverpool not targeting Southampton’s Jose Fonte in January

Show/hide article…

Southampton captain Jose Fonte is not a target for Liverpool in the January transfer window, according to Sky sources.

The Portuguese defender has been linked with a move to Anfield after handing in a transfer request at St Mary’s earlier in January.

However, Sky Sports News HQ has been told there is no interest in the centre back from Liverpool and he is not a target for Jurgen Klopp’s side ahead of their trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on Super Sunday, live on Sky Sports 1HD.

Fonte, who has also been regularly linked with a move to Manchester United, was left out of Southampton’s squads for their FA Cup clash with Norwich, their EFL Cup semi-final with Liverpool and Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Burnley in the Premier League.

The 33-year-old, who has 18 months left on his current contract, handed in a transfer request earlier this month and claimed on social media in December that he had not rejected a new deal but said he was told he would not be offered fresh terms by the Saints.

Fonte has made more than 250 appearances for Southampton since arriving from Crystal Palace in 2010.

No deal: Star won’t complete Liverpool switch this month

Show/hide article…

Fonte has asked to leave Southampton and had been linked with both Liverpool and Manchester United. But he won’t be moving to Anfield anytime soon. Sky Sports say Jurgen Klopp isn’t interested in signing the defender and he isn’t a target for the Reds this month.

The Liverpool boss looks to therefore be happy with the central defenders he has at his disposal. Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan have played together at the back in recent weeks but Joel Matip could return for the huge clash with United this afternoon. Mamadou Sakho has been out of the picture this season and could be heading out of the club this month.

Youngster Joe Gomez can fill in at centre-back if needed after he returned from a long-term knee injury in the FA Cup draw with Plymouth. The door has now been left for Jose Mourinho to take his Portuguese compratiot Fonte to Old Trafford. Fonte has been at Southampton since 2010 and is the longest serving player on the books at St Mary’s.
