Show/hide article…

WHICH Premier League team has conceded more fouls than any other side?

Some English top flight sides seem to enjoy bullying their opponents and give away fouls regularly as they attempt to disrupt the flow of their game.

Romeu believes Saints have the right attitude

Show/hide article…

ORIOL Romeu insists that Saints have the “right attitude” to thaw their frosty winter Premier League form – and is adamant they’re not heading for a battle at the bottom of the elite.

The defensive midfielder admitted Saints’ fourth straight league defeat at Burnley was hard to take, after the visitors dominated and performed well but failed once again to convert their chances.

The Spaniard reckons that Claude Puel’s men must continue to channel the winning style they showed in their triumph over Liverpool last week in the League Cup semi-final first leg, as they try to jolt their league form back to life.

“We have the right attitude,” he stated. “We are doing well coming from a massive game last Wednesday (Liverpool). It was good to keep going in that line [of performance].

“The main thing is to keep going in the same mentality (as against Liverpool) and keep doing the same job.”

Saints slid glumly into the bottom half of the Premier League at Turf Moor, but Romeu is adamant that they are not gearing up for a scrap for survival.

Instead, the 25-year-old is hoping Saints’ current position (13th) will prove lucky for them as they aim to build a platform to return to the higher reaches of the top-flight.

“We’d like not to battle or to struggle or fight for those things [at the bottom],” he said. “We have a good enough squad to fight for higher places in the table.

“Hopefully we can prove that and come back as soon as possible.”

You’d be forgiven for having déjà vu on Saturday, as once again Saints dominated, created numerous chances, looked in complete control, but somehow contrived to lose.

Eye rolls would have been shared between the shivering Saints supporters as Joey Barton’s deflected free-kick span past a rooted Fraser Forster on 79 minutes at a chilly Turf Moor.

“It’s hard to take,” said Romeu. “It was a difficult match. I think we did everything to stop them, but they won a free-kick. I went to stop their winger (Ashley Barnes) from shooting from outside the box and conceded a free-kick. From there, the ball was deflected and went in.

“Apart from that, everyone was quite controlled and we had a few chances to score, but we needed to take them.

“Looking back at the other defeats we had away, today we were a bit better, but we didn’t win again. We need to be better.”

Saints have not found the net in four of their past five Premier League away games, and Romeu is more than aware of their downfalls.

“When you lose you can point to so many things, but I think we always have to think we can do better,” he said.

“If they score once, you have to score twice and that’s what we have to do now – score more goals.

“We had chances to put it in today. In the first half there were good shots, and the second half with crosses, but the ball didn’t go in and they had one free-kick and the ball went in.

“They didn’t have many chances that I remember. I don’t remember Fraser (Forster) having to save us today.

“Looking at the chances, we played good and we need to be a team that puts its chances away, not one that doesn’t.”

Premier League clubs criticised in report into disabled access

Show/hide article…

Premier League clubs could face heavy fines and even points deductions if they fail to meet an August deadline to become compliant with disability access requirements, according to a report by the Culture, Media and Sport select committee.

The report states that four clubs - Chelsea, Liverpool, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth - are likely to miss the deadline and also criticises West Ham for reducing provision for disabled supporters since it took over the Olympic Stadium.

It accuses some clubs of “prioritising finance over improving access”, although the east London club say the report is based on out-of-date information.

The committee stated it will support the Equality and Human Rights Commission in taking legal action against individual clubs and their respective governing bodies in the event of evidence of their “systemic” non-compliance.

The report’s authors quoted Premier League executive director Bill Bush as stating that if the league’s member clubs fail to comply with the Accessible Stadia Guide by August 2017, then the Premier League board has the power to impose a wide range of sanctions including fines of £25,000 or, in the event of more serious breaches, referral to a specially-appointed independent panel which could impose heavier fines or even deduct points.

The Accessible Stadia Guide was funded and established by the Football Stadia Improvement Fund and the Football Licensing Authority in 2015.

CMS select committee chairman Damian Collins said: "When we see examples of good practice at some clubs that are already providing disabled supporters with a good experience when they attend matches, it is especially disappointing that some of the rich clubs are not doing more.

"Sports fans with disabilities are not asking for a large number of expensive changes - only to have their needs taken into account in the way sports stadia are designed and operated.

“It is high time that sports clubs, especially for example those with plenty of resources as in football’s Premier League, changed their mindset.”

Furthermore, the committee expressed concern over the desire of football’s governing bodies themselves to impose sanctions, adding: “Given 20 years of comparative inactivity by the football leagues, we are not convinced that the Premier League would impose suitable penalties on clubs, even for failing to meet building regulations.”

The damning evidence of insufficient access for disabled supporters at Premier League grounds is in stark contrast to the progress made at lower levels, with Derby, Tranmere and Wrexham among those singled out for special praise.

West Ham and Liverpool were also specifically criticised in the report for allegedly restricting access for disabled supporters in favour of more hospitality facilities.

The report revealed that Level Playing Field, the charity which promotes access for disabled fans, has claimed that Liverpool will still only have 75% of the minimum wheelchair places available once the first phase of the current rebuild of part of their stadium is complete - and that an improvement in that percentage in the second phase of the rebuild process is dependent on profits from hospitality facilities.

And it expressed concern that West Ham’s changes to the Olympic Stadium have resulted in some former wheelchair spaces being reallocated a dual use, for wheelchair users or hospitality facilities.

But West Ham responded by stating that the report was based on out-of-date information.

“Level Playing Field has since acknowledged to West Ham United that the information released in September 2016 was incorrect, and confirmed they are looking to begin the process of awarding West Ham United and London Stadium the Level Playing Field Centre of Excellence award,” a statement from the club read.

"This award is presented to sporting venues and stadia that demonstrate the highest access and inclusion standards in accommodating disabled spectators and visitors on match and non-matchdays.

"Every disabled supporter that has applied to attend a West Ham United match at London Stadium has been allocated one of our accessible seats. The Culture, Media and Sport Committee report references wheelchair user spaces located in Club London hospitality areas of the stadium which are ‘flexible’ spaces that can also - if unused - be occupied by non-wheelchair supporters. However, these spaces never have, and never will be, allocated to another fan at the expense of a disabled supporter.

“West Ham United is fully committed to its supporters with accessibility needs and is proud to have more wheelchair user spaces than any other Premier League stadium, with 253 in total. The overall quality of the provision means West Ham United lead the way amongst top-flight clubs and remain on course to be one of the first Premier League clubs to achieve all the requirements of the Accessible Stadia Guide.”

Liverpool were also contacted by Press Association Sport and were understood to be compiling a response.

The Premier League said: "The clubs are working hard to enhance disabled fan access and facilities in their stadiums. The scale and scope of the commitment made by clubs in this area is unprecedented for a single sport or sector, and the timescale is ambitious.

"Following consultation with specialist architects extensive improvements are being undertaken and rapid progress is being made.

At some grounds, particularly older ones, there are challenging built environment issues and, given that stadiums are in use throughout the football season, there is a limited period in which significant structural work can be done.

"For the clubs which are working through those challenges cost is not the determining factor. Instead they are working through issues relating to planning, how to deal with new stadium development plans, how best to manage fan disruption or, in certain cases where they don’t own their facility, having to work with third parties.

"At the end of this month we will present to DCMS, DWP (Department for Work and Pensions), EHRC (Equality and Human Rights Commission) and the CMS select committee an interim report which details each club’s progress ahead of a final report due in August.

“It of course remains the case that it falls to the EHRC to form its own view as to whether the adjustments being made are reasonable, as required by legislation.”

Premier League transfer news and rumours: ‘Chelsea target Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata as Diego Costa edges towards exit’

Show/hide article…

A bid of just under £20 million – plus £2.5m should Marseille qualify for the Champions League – has already been rejected by West Ham for Payet who has told the club he will never play for them again.

West Ham have publically stated that Payet is not for sale but if an offer closer to their valuation of £40m is made for the player he is expected to leave before the January window closes.

Meanwhile, West Ham captain Mark Noble has admitted that he is deeply disappointed with his team-mate who he has not spoken to now for weeks," Noble said at the weekend.

"I am angry and disappointed, because I have always said that he is one of the best players I have ever played with.

“I had - and I say had because I haven’t really spoken to him for the last two or three weeks - a great relationship with him, but I don’t know his reasons.

“I am not going to comment on why he wanted to leave but I do know that if someone doesn’t want to play for the team then they are better off not even playing.”

A report in Italy claims Liverpool are monitoring Serie A striker Domenico Berardi as a possible replacement for Daniel Sturridge.

Gazzetta di Modena, the local newspaper covering the patch on which Berardi’s team Sassuolo play, have said the Merseysiders are among a number of clubs to have scouted the 22-year-old. Inter Milan and Juventus are also believed to be keen on the striker who has scored 40 goals in 92 league appearances.

Jaïdi: It’ll be a game with a lot of quality

Show/hide article…

Saints host the Gunners in a 7pm kick-off at Staplewood Campus, having held them to a 0-0 draw when the sides last met in October.

“We are back to the Premier League 2 and it’s a game against a team that have some good quality players,” explained Jaïdi.

“Hopefully they will be young and we will challenge them; it’ll be a game with a lot of quality and football understanding.

“We played with some of the older boys against them last time and got a positive result, but I remember we played against some very strong players.”

Harrison Reed, Jake Hesketh, Josh Sims and Florin Gardos all played a part in the previous clash at Meadow Park.

But with all four having now moved on with the first team, Jaïdi believes there is a great opportunity for his younger players to seize.

“That’s a positive thing,” he continued.

“That’s what we do and what we are trying to achieve as an Academy. We are pleased that we have some of the Under-23s regularly training with the first team.

“But that will give space for the younger boys to get the same opportunity. The ones that keep performing and showing quality will stay with us and then push again.”

Loan Watch: McCarthy nets for Walsall in big win

Show/hide article…

The Saddlers got off to the perfect start at the Bescot Stadium, as Amadou Bakayoko opened the scoring in just the fifth minute, but the visitors equalised shortly after through Jack O’Connell.

Southampton loanee McCarthy would then restore the advantage for his temporary club just before the hour mark, as he finished calmly after a neat one-two in the build-up.

Joe Edwards added a third for Walsall nine minutes later, before a penalty from Erhun Oztumer with 15 minutes remaining sealed an impressive 4-1 win for Walsall.

The result leaves Walsall 14th in League 1, nine points off the play-off places.

In the Championship, Sam Gallagher was on the wrong end of a five-goal thriller, as Blackburn lost 3-2 to Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

Tom Lawrence opened the scoring with a low free-kick, before Hope Akpan levelled just before half time.

Christophe Berra restored the lead for Ipswich, before Lawrence grabbed his second with a fine strike to make it 3-1.

Danny Graham’s penalty pulled one back for Blackburn, but they couldn’t find an equaliser, with the result leaving them in the relegation places.

Out in Spain, Paulo Gazzaniga played the full 90 minutes as Rayo Vallecano drew 1-1 with Sevilla Athletic in Segunda División.

Ivi Lopez opened the scoring in just the second minute, despite the best efforts of Gazzaniga, before the Saints loanee made a smart save to prevent Sevilla doubling their advantage.

The save would prove vital, as Adrian Embarda netted an 87th-minute equaliser to earn Rayo a share of the spoils. The draw leaves Gazzaniga’s temporary club 16th in the table.

However, Zlatan Ibrahimovic (No 6, down four places) represented Jose Mourinho’s men among this week’s elite after scoring United’s late equaliser at Old Trafford.

Liverpool linked with moves for Domenico Berardi and Jose Fonte

Show/hide article…

Liverpool have entered a three-way race with Inter and Juventus to sign Sassuolo winger Domenico Berardi, according to reports in Italy.

The 22-year-old has spent large parts of this season out with injury, but the Gazzetta di Modena says he has caught the eye of Jurgen Klopp as he looks to strengthen in the wide areas.

An obstacle to any move is that Italian champions Juventus are said to have a €25m (£22m) option on the player who is unlikely to be going anywhere until the summer.

Klopp is also said to be lining up a move for Southampton captain Jose Fonte, who has handed in a transfer request.

The 33-year-old would come in to a defence that has conceded more goals than all of Liverpool’s top six rivals bar Manchester City and would cost around £10m, according to the Daily Mirror.

Anwar El Ghazi - who had been linked with a move to Anfield in the summer - is on his way to Lille, according to Voetbal International.

The Ajax winger has made four assists in the Eredivisie this season but has struggled to cement his place in the first-team after falling out with manager Peter Bosz.

Liverpool are among four European clubs now in the race for Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud.

Borussia Dortmund are thought to be his most likely destination, but Milan and Juventus are also keeping tabs, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
