Burnley 1 Southampton 0: Joey Barton scores winner on Premier League return

Show/hide article…

But Barton, back at Turf Moor for the remainder of the season despite the threat of an FA betting ban, had no doubts that he was going to take the 78th-minute free-kick which won the game for his club.

He prodded the dead ball through the wall – and Burnley collected all three points to go 10th in the table with their eighth home win of the season.

It was Barton’s first Premier League game since playing for QPR 601 days ago and the way he was mobbed by team-mates was a real welcome back to England after his ill-fated brief spell at Rangers.

Dyche said: “You couldn’t make it up. I couldn’t write your story. It was a sublime finish. Joey’s experienced. There is a manliness with the way he goes about his performances. I felt it was appropriate for him to come back.

“But he said to me, ‘What do I do?’ He was confused by being a sub. He said, ‘Do I take my boots out with me, wear a t-shirt or wear a warm up top or what?’ I said, ‘Oi. You get on with it’.”

Jurgen Klopp wants Premier League stalwart to bolster defence

Show/hide article…

Liverpool want Southampton defender Jose Fonte to plug their leaky defence.

The Portugal international has rejected the offer of a new deal at St Mary’s and Southampton will want £10million the Euro 2016 winner.

And Liverpool are keen to bring the 33-year-old to Anfield to reinforce the defensive options of manager Jurgen Klopp.

Fonte’s experience is seen as a major asset to Klopp as he looks to bring the much-coveted Premier League title to Liverpool.

Fonte, who has 18 months left on his contract, would join four former Southampton players – Adam Lallana, Nathaniel Clyne, Sadio Mane and Dejan Lovren – who have left for Anfield.

And Klopp could use wantaway central defender if Mamadou Sakho as part of the deal.

He cost £18m when signed from Paris St Germain in 2013, but is out in the cold under Klopp and has been playing in the reserves.

He said he was “disgusted” at his treatment – and is desperate to leave.

Meanwhile, Fonte’s team-mate Virgil van Dijk will not press to leave St Mary’s during this transfer window.

The Holland centre-back appreciates the chance the Saints have given him in the Premier League, and is happy to sit tight.

But there looks set to be a new battle for the 25-year-old in the summer. His old boss Ronald Koeman still wants to be reunited with Van Dijk at Everton.

Chelsea and Liverpool are also interested, with Manchester City scouting him on a game-by-game basis.

We must be more clinical, says Puel

Show/hide article…

Despite creating a number of good chances and restricting their hosts to very little by way of anything clear-cut, Joey Barton’s free-kick in the 79th minute was the decisive moment.

After a frustrating afternoon, Puel reflected: “We are not clinical enough in front of goal with all the chances away. I don’t know how many chances we can have today.

“We lost the game without many opportunities, apart from at the end when we push, for the opponent.

“We need to show good efficiency, be more clinical and things will be better.”

Saints have now competed on three fronts in January, with an FA Cup replay against Norwich City next on the agenda at St Mary’s on Wednesday night.

“We have played in three competitions this month and it’s important we continue this work and recover also,” Puel continued.

“When you saw the last two games, it was at a big intensity in terms of character, quality and concentration against Liverpool and against Burnley.

“We deserved the win against Liverpool, without a second goal. We’ve had a good attitude, good spirit and it’s difficult when you can do strong work with quality to lose a game like this one (against Burnley).”

Saints’ Premier League woes continue, as wasteful attack silenced at Burnley

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s miserable Premier League form continued, as Claude Puel’s side slumped to a narrow 1-0 defeat at Burnley on Saturday, their fourth straight loss.

Saints’ lack of firepower once again came back to haunt them, as they failed to make the most of dominating possession in a match in which Burnley’s Tom Heaton was by far the busier goalkeeper. Joey Barton’s deflected free kick 12 minutes from time to mark his return to Turf Moor was enough to seal the points for Burnley to the frustration of their visitors.

Virgil van Dijk underlined why he is now widely regarded as the best central defender in the Premier League with another outstanding display.

Despite slipping to 13th in the table, Southampton’s overall play is good; they are just not making the most of their chances. Even if their slide continues, there are enough bad teams in the league for Puel’s men not be dragged into a relegation dogfight.

Southampton’s decline will continue unless they invest in a proven striker. Having 20 shots away from home should be enough to at least get yourself on the score sheet.

The away form continues to be a concern, as is the inability to put together back-to-back results. Saints should have been buoyant after their midweek EFL Cup semifinal win over Liverpool.

5 – Puel certainly does not go along with the old adage, “never change a winning team.” Most managers would have named the same XI, injuries permitting, to try to build momentum after the Liverpool triumph, but the Frenchman cannot resist a tinker. Jordy Clasie excelled against the Merseysiders, but his reward was a place on the bench. Jay Rodriguez will also have been disappointed not to start against his old club, with the misfiring Shane Long preferred up front.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Fraser Forster, 6 – A relatively quiet afternoon, as Burnley only mustered three shots on target. Was wrong-footed by the deflection for Barton’s free kick winner.

DF Cedric Soares, 6 – Didn’t have to worry too much about defending as Southampton were mainly on the front foot. Whipped in some dangerous crosses.

DF Maya Yoshida, 6 – Continues to impress in the absence of wantaway Jose Fonte and finally seems to have won Southampton fans over.

DF Virgil van Dijk, 8 – Southampton’s standout performer once again. No wonder every top team in the Premier League and beyond want to buy him.

DF Ryan Bertrand, 7 – Looks to be back to his best after being hampered by injuries early in the season. A very dangerous outlet down the left side.

MF Oriol Romeu, 7 – Could have been forgiven for looking jaded after midweek heroics against Liverpool but wasn’t. Booked for a rash second-half tackle.

MF Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, 6 – Struggling to find any consistency, as he is in and out of the team. That rotation seems to have affected his confidence.

MF James Ward-Prowse, 6 – Played with bundles of energy after coming into the game fresh. His crosses from out wide deserved better end product.

MF Dusan Tadic, 6 – Unlucky not to get on the score sheet with some near misses, including one effort cleared off the line.

MF Nathan Redmond, 6 – Tame header that failed to trouble Burnley goalkeeper Heaton as close as he came to adding to Liverpool cup winner.

FW Shane Long, 7 – Made some good runs into the channels. Needs a goal to boost his confidence.

FW Jay Rodriguez, 6 – Will be asking questions as to why he did not start the game.

Puel: Focus on squad rather than transfers

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel insists he is staying focussed on guiding his squad towards more goals, rather than worrying about signing a new striker this month.

While the Saints boss has not ruled out a move for a goalscorer during January, he has previously hinted that he is happy with his squad as it is and would only move for a player that is a clear improvement, which he admitted it hard to find at this time of the year.

However, after Saints drew another blank at Burnley to slip to a fourth Premier League defeat in a row, the pressure was turned up a notch on Saints to act.

Puel said: “We will see this. We work with the chairman. We will see this with calm.

“If an opportunity to improve the squad we will see.

“For me, for the moment, it is important to keep my concentration about this team and to pass other things.

“It is always difficult after a loss, and after a loss not deserved.

“It is important to recover and to come back for the next game. We will see against Norwich. “It is an important competition, an important game of course. We play important games with all this many games in three competitions and it’s important now to finish January with the results of course.”

It has started to feel a little like being the same old story over and over again for Saints, who can play well but are left to rue a lack of cutting edge in the final third which ends up costing them.

“It is difficult of course to accept this. You can see this game with quality,” said Puel after the loss to Burnley at Turf Moor, which followed up the 1-0 win over Liverpool in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final.

“It was a difficult game against a difficult opponent with long balls, second balls, free kicks.

“We made strong work to resist without opportunity for the opponent and just one free kick, strange free kick for them to win this game. It is a big disappointment with this good work.

“The attitude, the same spirit, the same quality, like the game against Liverpool, but we didn’t deserve about this good play.

“Of course it is two different games with two different opponent and play but we can do very good work today and miss many chances, Dusan in the first half and also the second half, the opponent goalkeeper made good saves and maintain Burnley in the game.

“It is difficult after this game to tell other things. A lot of opportunities, no chances for the opponent, and it’s difficult to tell other things.”

Man United could trigger Liverpool defender deal: £20m man eyed

Show/hide article…

According to the Express, Manchester United, Chelsea and Everton are all interested in signing Van Dijk, although the Saints insist he won’t be sold in this month’s transfer window. But in the event he does leave, Sakho is reportedly being eyed as a possible replacement for the Dutchman at St Mary’s.

The centre-back has been completely frozen out of all first-team activites by Jurgen Klopp at Anfield. He is yet to play a single minute of football for the Reds this season and looks to be nearing the end of his career on Merseyside. However the Express claim Liverpool still value him at around £20m, which Southampton are said to be unwilling to pay.

Sakho’s reported salary of £105,000-a-week could also be a stumbling block for the south coast outfit. The former Paris St-Germain star is tied to Liverpool until the summer of 2020 but Klopp seemingly has no intention of letting him see out the rest of his deal. Speaking last month, he said: “He [Sakho] is not in these plans for the first team.

“Once again this actual first-team squad is in this dressing room, from this point of view nobody will be sold.

“But do you really think I would have said Sakho will not be sold in winter? Nothing has changed.”
