Burnley 1-0 Southampton: Saints suffer fourth straight Premier League loss

Show/hide article…

Saints are without a Premier League point for almost a month after a 1-0 defeat at Burnley condemned them to a fourth straight top flight loss.

Claude Puel’s side last tasted victory in the league when they beat Bournemouth on December 18, but have since slumped into a horrible run of form despite their EFL Cup heroics against Liverpool.

It was a familiar story at Burnley as a lack of cutting edge meant they were unable to capitalise on their periods of dominance before they conceded an unfortunate goal as Joey Barton’s deflected free kick beat Fraser Forster and meant they returned from Turf Moor empty handed.

Saints had the first sniff after four minutes as Ryan Bertrand fed in a low cross from the left. Shane Long just got in front of Stephen Ward to flick it towards goal, but the Burnley defender was in close enough attention to block.

Dusan Tadic whipped in a dangerous cross from the other side just minutes later, with Nathan Redmond in the area trying to guide a header on target, but again Burnley were able to deflect it behind.

Burnley first managed any pressure on the Saints backline on 13 minutes, but it fizzled out as Ben Mee looped a header wide from Steven Defour’s corner.

The game settled into a pattern that made it more of a war of attrition than a thrilling footballing spectacle.

It was always likely to be that way with Burnley making the most of what they have with an uncompromising style that made them hard to break down but also meant they were not going to take undue risks pushing forward.

Saints knew they had to respond by matching the work rate and being tough to break down. They were also not afraid to play the ball in behind early with Long trying to turn the defence as a willing runner.

Maya Yoshida became the first player in the book on 24 minutes for a handball on the halfway line which prevent Andre Gray from the chance of a quick break.

Saints were asking a question of referee Paul Tierney when Oriol Romeu went down holding his face after being caught by the flailing arm of Ashley Barnes but he awarded a free kick and nothing more.

Mee tried his luck with a shot on the turn as a headed clearance dropped to him just outside the area on the half hour mark. It was well struck but went wide.

Tadic had the best chance up until that point four minutes later as he had time and space to measure his shot as the ball reached him at the far post. He fired low across goal hoping for the bottom corner but directed it wide.

The Serbian had the chance for another effort from a similar position, but this time on the volley, on 39 minutes. His clearly struck effort might looked to have been creeping narrowly beyond the far corner but Mee was beyond keeper Tom Heaton and able to clear to make sure.

Tadic had a shot blocked after James Ward-Prowse’s header which was easy for Heaton as Saints just started to increase the pressure before half time.

However, they weren’t able to make it pay and a fairly flat first period ended with the game goalless.

The first meaningful action of the second half saw Dean Marney booked for a foul on Tadic.

Jeff Hendrick tried to make something happen for Burnley with a shot from 25 yards but it never came close to troubling Fraser Forster.

The Saints keeper did have to make his first save of the game on 55 minutes as Steven Defour whipped a central free kick from 25 yards on target but it was a relatively comfortable stop for Forster.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg drove in a shot from the edge of the box as Saints pressed forward but Mee was again on hand on intercept it.

Redmond had half a chance as he was found with a left wing cross but it took a slightly awkward bounce in front of him and he steered his shot from just inside the area wide of the target.

Dean Marney forced Forster into a slightly more pressing save on 64 minutes with a drilled low effort from 20 yards but the Saints stopper got down smartly to his right to make the stop.

There were few arguments when Romeu went in the book after scything down Defour as he tried to break forward.

Saints a first change on 67 minutes with Jay Rodriguez replacing Tadic. The former Burnley man went through the middle with Redmond and Long playing slightly withdrawn roles either side of him.

Long had a decent chance coming in from the left to meet a right wing cross by Cedric Soares but he could only head into the side netting.

Burnley made a double switch with Joey Barton and Sam Vokes coming on for Marney and Defour.

Saints created a bit of panic in the Clarets backline from a free kick but in the end it was hacked clear.

There was a horrible moment for Saints on 78 minutes as they fell behind.

Referee Tierney awarded Burnley a central free kick 25 yards out for what he saw as a foul by Romeu on Boyd.

Barton stepped up just minutes after coming on and drilled in a low shot that took a significant deflection off of the wall to leave Forster wrong footed and give Burnley the lead.

Puel responded immediately with Josh Sims coming on for Redmond.

Bertrand tried to bring his side back into it with an effort from distance but Heaton got his body behind it to save.

Burnley made a defensive change with three minutes remaining as they looked to hold on with James Tarkowski replacing Gray.

Virgil van Dijk got his head on an inswinging corner from Ward-Prowse but could only direct it straight at Heaton.

The Burnley stopper made a superb double save late on, firstly to deny Rodriguez with a low shot from outside the area and then to recover quickly to just keep out the follow-up from Sims at the near post and that proved to be enough to secure the win.

Burnley 1-0 Southampton: Joey Barton back with a bang as sub scores late to down Saints

Joey Barton came off the bench to score the winner in his first Premier League appearance for Burnley, sealing a 1-0 victory over Southampton.

The veteran midfielder, who signed a short term deal until the end of the season earlier this month, struck with a long-range free-kick on 78 minutes that seemed to find its way in via Jeff Hendrick’s backside.

Saints had dominated possession throughout the game but could not find away past Sean Dyche’s defence, which earned its fifth clean sheet of a promising campaign.

Dusan Tadic had a number of blocked shots in the first half for the visitors, while Virgil van Dijk went close at the death, but the Clarets move above the Saints in the table into 10th place.

Barton was instrumental in Burnley’s promotion campaign last season but opted to move to Rangers in the summer for what turned out to be an ill-fated move for the 34-year-old.

Manager Dyche felt he had earned a second chance at Turf Moor after what he did for them last year and, after impressing in the FA Cup draw at Sunderland last week he may have been tempted to start him in this game.

And that feeling might have been compounded during a first half that Burnley struggled to dictate, with sloppy and hopeful passes up-field allowing Southampton to launch wave after wave of attacks that proved fruitless.

Tadic almost got on the end of a few decent early crosses, while Ben Mee threatened at the other end from a Burnley corner, heading one wide of the far post before missing past the near with a shot from distance.

Enjoying space on the left-hand side, Tadic sent a low effort wide of the far post while in acres of space before forcing Mee to clear another effort off the line as the game approached half-time.

Steven Defour, one of two Burnley changes from the defeat to Manchester City, and Hendrick sent speculative efforts at Forster, while Nathan Redmond should have done better when he was found unmarked on the penalty spot but side-footed wide.

Shane Long also sent a header into the side-netting at the far post before Barton replaced Dean Marney and immediately set to work trying to inspire his team to make the breakthrough.

And Barton made no mistake when Ashley Barnes was fouled on the edge of the box, eyeing up the goal as he stood over the ball before firing low through a host of bodies and finding the slightest of knicks off Hendrick to bag his first goal at Turf Moor.

Højbjerg: We had opportunities

Show/hide article…

Saints controlled much of the contest in Lancashire, but were ultimately defeated by a second-half free-kick from Clarets substitute Joey Barton, which resulted in a fourth consecutive Premier League loss for the visitors.

Højbjerg, who completed the full game in midfield, said Saints had the opportunity to win the game in the first half alone, as he cut a disappointed figure after the match.

“I think we had the opportunities to be many goals ahead, but it didn’t happen,” he said.

“Burnley scored a free-kick which maybe could have been avoided and you always get frustrated when a situation like that happens, but this is football and after that we also needed to stay calm and straight to keep on playing. I don’t know if we did that, but all in all, we did have opportunities, and maybe first half we should have scored one or two goals.

“With the quality that we have in the team and that I also demand from us all, then opportunities like that need to be a goal.

“It didn’t happen, and we had to keep going and I think we did that, but Burnley second half were even more aggressive and even more direct, even if it is more difficult to believe that.”

Saints had two late chances in the game to rescue a point, which were well-saved by Clarets ‘keeper Tom Heaton, and added to a disappointing day all round.

“We have quality,” Højbjerg insisted.” We have a good team with high quality and we have to keep on feeding the goal scorers, and today we didn’t score, it’s not their fault that we lose 1-0 because we had the opportunities, not at all, but as I said, we could have been in front and could have killed the game already in the first half.

“Like it is in England, with the second balls and a lot of 50-50 balls it’s about that when it comes to the long ball with pressure and we could have done better, I believe that, but what can I say? We lost 1-0 here and we had opportunities, but nobody wants to hear that when you lose 1-0 in Burnley – you’re not happy.”

Puel frustrated after defeat to Burnley

Show/hide article…

Despite dominating large parts of the game and having a number of chances, Joey Barton’s deflected free-kick separated the two teams.

Puel said: “We know it’s difficult to play against this team. They are a physical team with long balls, second balls and free-kicks.

“I think we can do a strong game to resist, to win duels and after the recovery to play and we had many chances, like Dušan in the first-half and it was the same in the second-half.

“It’s difficult to accept this loss after this game because we can have many chances without opportunity for the opponent and a free-kick is sufficient for them.

“We need to score more because with all the chances, you can lose the game like today and it’s a big disappointment because they did strong work.

“It’s incredible to lose this game after all these possibilities, without opportunities for the opponent.”

Burnley 1-0 Southampton: Puel seeks end to “difficult period”

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has called on Saints to end their “difficult period” as the prospect of European qualification via the Premier League starts to fade.

A 1-0 loss to Burnley made it four top flight defeats on the bounce for Saints, who finished the day down in 13th position.

While their placing is still comfortable in terms of a gap to the bottom three, the hopes they previously had of making a dash for seventh have taken a dent.

Puel is not getting too worried about league positions and points just yet, but is instead trying to find a way to halt the poor top flight form, which has been punctuated by an FA Cup draw with Norwich and an excellent EFL Cup victory over Liverpool.

He said: “For the moment just to stop this difficult period.

“It was a bad Christmas for us with three games in five days. It was difficult to play these games.

“We came back against Norwich, Liverpool, with good play, good possibilities.

“It was the same today without the result, but of course it is important now to find a good efficient and to be clinical with all the good work in this play.

“It is important to score with all the chances.

“It is difficult to take this goal in this situation but if we score more before perhaps this goal doesn’t count.”

They were up against a Burnley team who have been formidable at Turf Moor this season.

Sean Dyche certainly has his side well drilled and they showed great discipline and work rate.

Saints had a few chances but again couldn’t convert, and in the end a free kick from Joey Barton proved to be the difference between the sides come the final reckoning.

“If they are lucky like today they can continue to win their games,” smiled Puel when asked just why Burnley were so hard for his side to play away from home.

“It is difficult to play here with long balls, second balls, direct play, but I think we can give a good answer against them.

“It is important to score and to take a good result.

“Congratulations for this team. It is important to win their game and at home they are strong but in this game I think we deserve other things.”

Claude Puel admits Southampton need to be more clinical as search for new striker goes on

Southampton manager Claude Puel remained tight-lipped on his club’s pursuit of a new striker but admitted they need to be more clinical after defeat at Burnley.

The Saints dominated possession and created good chances at Turf Moor but lost 1-0 after a late Joey Barton free-kick.

Sky sources understand the south-coast club want to bring in another striker in the January window and Puel admitted they will look to improve the squad if they can.

“It’s difficult to accept this loss. It’s a big disappointment and a big frustration for the players," the Frenchman said.

"We knew it would be a difficult game, against a difficult opponent; playing with long balls, second balls and free-kicks. We made a strong work to resist their opportunities with just one, strange free-kick winning this game.

“We had the same attitude, the same spirit as the game against Liverpool and we didn’t deserve this, with good play.

“It’s important now to be clinical, with all the good work in our play. It’s important to score your chances.

“We work with the owner and the chairman (on recruitment). If the opportunity comes to improve the squad, we will see. But at the moment it is important to keep my consideration about this team.”

Southampton have dropped into the bottom half of the Premier League after a fourth consecutive league defeat, failing to build on their 1-0 win over Liverpool in the EFL Cup semi-finals in midweek.

And Puel said: “For the moment it is just about stopping this difficult period. It was a bad Boxing Day for us and then three games in five days.

“We came back against Norwich and Liverpool with good play and possibilities. It was the same today but without the result. It’s important now to work for the next game. It’s important to finish January with good results.”
