Fleming: It was always going to be a hard ask

Show/hide article…

A Saints side of mostly first year scholars were well beaten by a confident Reading outfit, who currently sit second in the Under-18 Premier League table.

“A few home truths were said in the dressing room after that,” explained Fleming.

“They were a young eleven out there today; they are not the ones who have been starting every week for us.

“As a group they haven’t had massive exposure to Saturday morning games with the Under-18s, as they have mainly been playing with the Under-17s.

“So you can kind of excuse it for those, but not for what we saw for the majority of the first half: a lack of desire and willingness to run.”

Saints went in 2-0 down at the break, before Ben House completed his hat-trick and Jordan Holsgrove netted a fine strike to round-off the scoring in the second half.

And Fleming was quick to pinpoint two key areas for his side to improve.

“They are young lads learning the game,” he continued.

“It’s very difficult for them, as I have always said. There’s a big physical difference between first years and second years with the growth spurt you get at that age, so it was always going to be a hard ask.

“But they will learn a lot from today. Defensively we need to get a lot sharper and communication is a massive area for improvement. They were very quiet today and as an ex-defender I know that’s a huge part of being organised at the back.”

Here are the five things we learned from Burnley’s 1-0 win over Southampton

Show/hide article…

Joey Barton is back with a bang after he came off the bench to score Burnley’s winner.

Barton had been on the pitch for a little over five minutes on his second home debut for Burnley when he netted from a free-kick just 12 minutes from time.

Barton, who was sacked by Rangers in the autumn after falling out with boss Mark Warburton, was delighted and his goal has taken the Clarets another big step towards safety.

It was a sweet moment on his first Premier League appearance in 601 days since being battered with QPR against Leicester in May 2015.

Defeat extended Southampton’s losing streak in the Premier League to four games and they were a pale shadow of the side who gave Liverpool such a chasing in midweek.

Here are the five things we learned from the match:

Southampton need to keep Virgil van Dijk more than Jose Fonte. Saints skipper Fonte is trying to force a move away from St Mary’s, but van Dijk is their real defensive cornerstone. He was excellent against Burnley, reading the game superbly to break up Burnley’s attacks. Everton would love him now, but the Dutchman prefers to wait and see if Manchester City or Chelsea move for him in the summer.

This was definitely after the Lord Mayor’s Show for Southampton. Saints’ display against Burnley was in contrast to their great showing against Liverpool in midweek, when they gave Jurgen Kopp’s side their biggest runaround of the season. They were too quick to hump the ball long towards the recalled Shane Long and did not play enough of their good passing football. They can play more attractive football than this, but coach Claude Puel seemed content to fight fire with fire style wise to end their losing streak in the Premier League.

Southampton can be just as direct as Burnley. We all know how Burnley like to use Ashley Barnes as a targetman with the pacy Andre Gray feeding off him. But Saints also went route one at times. They may have the classy Dusan Tadic and Nathan Redmond on the flanks, but many of their balls were aimed at frontman Shane Long. Both teams’ direct styles did not make for the greatest of spectacles, particularly in the first half.

Steven Defour needs to contribute more. Defour has been inconsistent since arriving in the summer and has yet to show he can cut it in the Premier League on a regular basis. Sean Dyche seems reluctant to start him in away games, which says it all. Dyche played him on the left here, but the Belgium does not have the pace to go past people. He tried to get involved with his short-passing game, but he was very much on the periphery.

Sean Dyche deserves much more credit. Eddie Howe is hailed as some kind of coaching genius and tipped to be a future England manager. Yet Dyche does not get half as many plaudits for the job he is doing. He is doing just as well as Howe - and on a much smaller budget. Perhaps it’s snobbism because he plays 4-4-2, his direct style, or even his ginger hair or gruff accent. Whatever hang-ups people have about Dyche, they should get over him because he is working a minor miracle at Burnley and they are well on course to stay up for the first time since 1975.

Burnley 1-0 Southampton: Barton wins it with late free-kick

Show/hide article…

Substitute Joey Barton was mobbed by jubilant team-mates after scoring to earn Burnley won their fourth consecutive home game and climbed into the top half of the Premier League.

Barton, 34, scored with a free-kick after 78 minutes just five minutes after replacing Dean Marney as Southampton slipped to their own fourth league loss in a row.

The controversial Barton was re-signed by Burnley at the start of the year having left the club in the summer for Glasgow Rangers having helped them to promotion.

The first game of is second spell was in Burnley’s FA Cup at Sunderland last weekend but this was his first Premier League appearance since May 2015 when he was a QPR player.

Barton is currently facing FA misconduct charges after being accused of placing 1260 football-related bets over the past decade but he is free to play until January 31 after being granted extra time to answer his case.

Until Barton’s introduction, Turf Moor had been reduced to a slumber with both sides cancelling each other out. But things hotted up once Oriol Romeu fouled George Boyd just outside the area and Barton drove low with virtually his first kick.

The earlier minute’s silence for Graham Taylor before kick off had added poignancy for Burnley boss Sean Dyche, whose managerial career started at Watford when Taylor was chairman.

Taylor would have been proud to have seen what his protege has achieved with Burnley, particularly at their Turf Moor fortress where they have picked up all but one of their Premier League points this season.

Southampton are no mugs though and despite having a tough midweek fixture against Liverpool in the EFL Cup semi-final, they started brightly and Dusan Tadic, the only outfield player on view wearing gloves, had a goalbound shot blocked by the reliable Marney.

After 20 minutes Southampton’s Serbian midfielder had another clear opportunity at the far post but draggd his shot wide from eight yards. When Tadic then had a third strike from a similar position, it threatened to creep in until Ben Mee kicked away a couple of yards from the line.

James Ward-Prowse had the only effort on target in the opening half for either side with a header comfortably saved by Tom Heaton.

Burnley were reliant on Ashley Barnes flick-ons for Gray – a kind of tribute to Taylor – and were annoyed that referee Paul Tierney appeared to miss a tug by Virgil van Dijk on Gray.

The Clarets strike scored a hat-trick against Sunderland in his last home game but found The Saints defence a much tougher nut to crack. Defour registered Burnley’s first shot on target with a free-kick into Fraser Forster’s arms early in the second period.

Though solid at the back, Saints are among the lowest scorers in the Premier League and currently without injured striker Charlie Austin who scored twice in their 3-1 win against Burnley at St Mary’s earlier in the season.

Shane Long is a willing runner and also helped out with defensive duties but his stumble attempting a backheel to Tadic to sum up some of the visitor’s forward play.

Southampton threw on a second striker to try and break the malaise midway through the second half with ex-Burnley forward Jay Rodriguez getting a warm ovation from both sets of fans as he replaced Tadic.

But it was Burnley who threatened next when Gray went on a thrilling run from deep inside his own half before being blocked by an excellent recovery from Portugal’s Euro 2016-winning right-back Cedric Soares.

As an encore, Soares then floated a cross up to the far post where Rodriguez rose well before planting a header into the sidenetting.

The game was roused by the arrival of Joey Barton as substitute. The enfant terrible of British football was only back at Turf Moor because his brief spell in Scotland at Glasgow Rangers had ended prematurely

Almost immediately, the temperature on the pitch raised. A spillage by Heaton created a goalmouth scramble which nearly profited Southampton.

Barton immedieately took responsibility when Burnley were awarded a free-kick shortly after and when his shot found the bottom corner via a deflection, his team-mates sprinted to jump on his back while he punched the air for joy.

Saints had one chance to equalise but Heaton dived to his left to keep out Rodriguez and the visitors couldn’t bundle home the rebound.

Burnley 1 Southampton 0: Joey Barton announces his return with free-kick winner at Turf Moor

Show/hide article…

Joey Barton’s feats last season had already reserved him a hero’s welcome but here he announced his second coming at Burnley with a match-winning goal that sparked near-pandemonium.

Until his arrival as a substitute in the 73rd minute the game had lacked a protagonist worthy of settling the outcome. The stage had been set, and how Barton (right) delivered on his return both to claret and blue and to the Premier League after a 601-day absence.

His first touch prevented Shane Long from opening the scoring for Southampton, an inconsequential second touch followed and then came a 25-yard free-kick with his third touch, the game’s defining moment.

It begins the latest chapter in a remarkable compendium containing, the good, the bad and the ugly. His value, though, at this juncture of the season cannot be underestimated.

It is perhaps a measure of the meagre financial framework that Sean Dyche works within at Burnley that even now, after a sixth victory from their last seven outings at fortress Turf Moor, nothing is guaranteed.

Joey Barton marks Premier League return with Burnley winner

Show/hide article…

Joey Barton scored with practically his first touch since returning to Premier League football, his deflected 25-yard free-kick settling a drab contest with Southampton and maintaining Burnley’s remarkable record at Turf Moor.

All but one of Sean Dyche’s 26 points to date this season have come on home soil and Barton continued that excellent home return on 78 minutes after Oriol Romeu had brought down George Boyd.

Barton, who still faces FA charges relating to allegations over betting on over 1,000 football matches, had not played in the Premier League since May 2015 but ensured his status in recent Burnley folklore on his return.

Dyche had named the recently re-signed Barton among his substitutes - a popular move judging by the reception his name received before kick-off - although, for the first 45 minutes at least, the game was crying out for the sort of unpredictable and combustible entertainment often provided by the midfielder in the past.

“He said what do I do? He was confused by being sub,” laughed Dyche. “He said, ‘Do I take my boots out with me, wear a t-shirt or wear a warm-up top or what?’.

“I said, ‘Oi, you get on with it.’ There was another word in there but you can imagine the sort of rapport we have built at the moment."

Not until the half-hour mark had been passed did either keeper break sweat, the preceding action all too often having been stifled by two well-organised defences and Southampton’s pressing game which hurried Burnley out of their stride.

Finally, from a set-piece that was only half-cleared by the Southampton defence, Ben Mee was able to connect with an 18-yard shot which flew just wide of the home goal.

But, for all Burnley’s impressive home record to date, the half would end with Southampton firmly in the ascendancy as they sought to avoid a fourth consecutive league defeat.

The League Cup semi-finalists threatened first, on 35 minutes, when Pierre-Emile Hojberg dispossessed Jeff Hendrick, allowing Dusan Tadic a low shot that only just missed the target.

Tadic was again on the end of a Southampton attack, from Cedric Soares’ right-wing cross, and although his sharp volley may well have missed the far post, Mee hacked the ball clear just to be certain.

And, closest yet to an opening goal, Shane Long’s cross was met by the head of James Ward-Prowse, forcing the England goalkeeper Tom Heaton into an unorthodox one-handed save to keep it out of his goal.

Within seconds of the restart, Burnley were awarded a free-kick in a promising position although Steven Defour succeeded only in drilling it directly into the Southampton wall, which hardly offered encouragement that better was to come.

At least the next set-piece, awarded after a 55th minute Romeu foul on Ashley Barnes, offered the Belgian the chance to redeem himself and Defour’s 25-yard free-kick represented Burnley’s first shot on target, Fraser Forster covering to make a simple save.

What passed for the “action” returned to the other end with Hojberg having a goal bound shot deflected behind for a corner by another block from Mee.

But Burnley were beginning to wear a more committed look and good, tenacious work from Hendrick won them the ball and played in Defour whose low shot was well smothered by the Southampton goalkeeper.

The added urgency had also created slightly more space for the two teams to try and exploit and a Soares cross was met by Long whose header was strong but inaccurate, nestling into the side-netting.

And as the home side re-adjusted following a double substitution - including the introduction of Barton - there was anxiety in the home area when Virgil van Dijk played a Ward-Prowse free-kick across goal and Heaton scrambled to safety.

After Barton’s goal, the game finally burst into life and Heaton made impressive late saves from Ryan Bertrand and Josh Sims to guarantee three points.

“You can’t make it up," Dyche added on Barton’s fairy tale return. "I just said to him I couldn’t write your story. It was a sublime finish, of course, he’ll be telling everyone that anyway but we probably earned a scratch of luck today.

“We’ll see what he can add. He’s just come on today and played at Sunderland in the cup.

“He’s experienced of course, there’s a manliness to the way he goes about his performance and there’s an assuredness from many years of playing top-level football around many clubs.

“For all he gets a bit of stick, he’s so used to that, he brushes it off and gets on with it and focuses on his football. I felt it was appropriate for him to come back in to us.

“I’ve had no question marks about him before and I didn’t see why I would again. So far, he’s slotted in nicely again.”

Claude Puel was understandably not happy with the result, and rued his side’s misfortune by claiming Burnley had only luck to thank for their victory.

“If they are lucky like today they can continue to win,” said Southampton manager Puel.

“It is difficult to play here with long balls, second balls but I think we can give a good answer against them. It is important to score and to take a good result but in this game I think we deserved something positive.”
