Why over-reliance on Michael Oliver shows lack of quality among Premier League referees

Show/hide article…

The lack of quality Premier League referees has been exposed by an analysis of this season’s official appointments.

According to research carried out by the team at You-are-the-ref, headed by former referee and Telegraph Sport columnist Keith Hackett, certain officials have been “exposed” to particular high-profile teams and matches too often, highlighting a lack of quality across the board.

Michael Oliver has refereed 33 Premier League matches this season, taking charge of seven games involving Liverpool and seven more involving Tottenham.

For Hackett, this showed that the management team that make the appointments do not believe they have enough quality referees to share the burden equally.

“Our team at You-are-the-ref have carried out a detailed analysis of the Referee appointments this season,” says Hackett. "The figures include the up coming final games of the season.

Chelsea open talks with star defender: Deal would smash record, Liverpool rocked

Show/hide article…

Van Dijk looks increasingly likely to leave Southampton this summer despite the club insisting they don’t need to sell him. Starsport understand that Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City and Everton are all interested in the 25-year-old. Reports earlier this month claimed that Van Dijk has agreed personal terms with Liverpool and will head to Anfield so long as they secure Champions League football for next season.

The Telegraph now report that the Dutchman would favour a summer move to Chelsea instead. They claim that the Blues have opened negotiations in private with Van Dijk’s camp and Antonio Conte is eager to get the deal done. It is said that any transfer would exceed the £50m that Paris St-Germain paid Chelsea for David Luiz in 2014. That fee is still the world record for a defender but Van Dijk could smash it when the transfer window reopens.

Van Dijk enjoyed a fine season with Southampton before a nasty ankle injury abruptly ended his season in January. The centre-back, who has 12 international caps for Holland to date, joined the Saints from Celtic for £13m in 2015. He is under contract at St Mary’s until June 2022, meaning Claude Puel’s side will be in a strong negotiating position this summer.

Saints held by United

Show/hide article…

Saints had the better of the opportunities at St Mary’s, but were denied on a number of occasions by United keeper Sergio Romero, whose string of fine saves was highlighted by a superb penalty stop from Manolo Gabbiadini.

The result takes Saints to 46 points, one ahead of ninth-placed West Brom, ahead of Sunday’s final game of the campaign, at home to Stoke City.

Manager Claude Puel made eight changes from the side that won 2-1 at Middlesbrough, as he freshened his side up in the midst of a hectic spell.

Fraser Forster, Maya Yoshida and Oriol Romeu were the only players to retain their positions, with Matt Targett starting at left-back in what was his first appearance since October, as he completed his return from a long-term injury.

It was in fact Targett who had the first effort of the night, in just the second minute, as a loose ball broke to him 18 yards out, only for his shot to fly over.

Shortly afterwards, Saints were awarded a glorious chance to take the lead, as referee Mike Dean awarded a penalty when Eric Bailly handled an angled ball forward on the edge of the area.

Gabbiadini stepped up and sent a low effort towards the bottom corner, but Romero sprung brilliantly to his right to divert it just wide with his fingertips.

Almost immediately, Fraser Forster had to make a good stop to deny Bailly, after he cut into space on the edge of the area, before Anthony Martial angled a low shot wide from just outside the area in the 15th minute.

In between those opportunities, Romeu was booked for a foul on Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Saints were soon back on the front foot again, though, as James Ward-Prowse bent a free-kick wide from 25 yards, while Phil Jones made a late, sliding intervention to deny Cédric, after he’d got in on the angle from a Dušan Tadić pass.

The right-back would be the next man into the book, as he was cautioned for pulling back Martial in the 37th minute.

In the last minute of the half, Redmond exchanged a smart one-two with Steven Davis just outside the area, but Romero was equal to his right-footed strike from 20 yards.

Neither side made any changes at the break, and Saints were again positive within minutes of the restart, twice forcing Romero into excellent saves.

The first was after Cédric won a free-kick on the edge of the area, with Ward-Prowse touching the ball to Dušan Tadić, who saw his fierce drive pushed away, before Romeu’s effort after a loose ball that fell to him in the area in the 55th minute was also repelled.

Moments later, Jack Stephens got a clear sight of goal after a Ward-Prowse corner looped to him in space at the back post, but he got his volley wrong, and sent it across the face of goal instead, with United able to scramble clear.

Saints were well on top, but could not find a way past Romeo, as he sprung to his right to divert wide a Ward-Prowse effort that was destined for the top corner.

While the hosts were unable to make their pressire pay there was always danger United could punish them and they came close to doing so in the 66th minute, as Wayne Rooney threatened to break clear, before turning and laying the ball off to Juan Mata, whose shot from a great position just inside the area was high and wide.

Puel was forced to withdraw Cédric in the 69th minute, after he picked up a knock, with Jérémy Pied coming on in his place.

Saints went close again soon after, but Jones threw himself in front of Ward-Prowse’s effort from close range, while Martial then bent a beautiful shot against the post from 20 yards at the other end.

With 13 minutes left, Puel made his final substitution, as Sofiane Boufal was thrown on for Ward-Prowse.

It was one of the other subs who had the next big chance, though, as Rodriguez was slipped through on the edge of the area, but he spun and fired just wide of the far post.

Saints continued to work hard after that for another opportunity, but there was no way through, as both teams had to settle for a point.

Puel hopes Saints will end penalty jinx

Show/hide article…

Striker Manolo Gabbiadini’s effort was saved by United goalkeeper Sergio Romero as Southampton failed to secure an eighth-placed finish in the league.

Although striker Shane Long’s effort that went over the bar at Middlesbrough did not impact the result, the miss against Hull City from Dusan Tadic came during another goalless game at St Mary’s last month.

“We perhaps need to work a little more on the training sessions because the penalties have been very important,” Puel told reporters.

“It’s a shame and I think to have had this situation with this opportunity and good play with many possibilities and opportunities is good work for the next game and of course to find the clinical edge.”

The Saints have also failed to score in their last four home games as they prepare to host 14th-placed Stoke City in the final game of the season on Sunday.

Targett: It’s great to be back out there

Show/hide article…

The 21-year-old suffered a hamstring injury during the 3-1 win over Burnley in October, and has spent the majority of the season working on his recovery.

“It was very nice to be back playing at St Mary’s,” started Targett.

“It’s been a difficult season for me with the injury, but it was great to be back out there today playing in front of all the fans.

“Football is full of highs and lows. This season has been a low point for me, but I have worked hard and am happy to be back.”

Targett played 90 minutes during the penultimate Premier League game of the season against Manchester United at St Mary’s.

And although he was pleased to pick up a clean sheet, he felt Saints should have come away from the game with more than one point.

“I don’t think they troubled us too much,” he continued.

“Martial hitting the post was the only real dangerous moment they had and I thought we defended very well, but in the final third we need to be better.

“It’s very important for us now to finish well against Stoke and finish as high as possible. Then we can look back on the season positively and go again next season.”

Man United goalkeeper Sergio Romero reveals the key to Southampton penalty save

Show/hide article…

There were few goalkeepers in world football more equipped to keep Manolo Gabbiadini at bay from the penalty spot than Sergio Romero.

Manchester United’s back-up to David de Gea pulled off a perfect save low to his right early on against Southampton to keep the scores 0-0, which it remained.

And the Argentine admitted his inside knowledge on Gabbiadini’s potentially lethal left boot worked to his advantage in the fifth minute.

“I played one year with [Manolo] Gabbiadini in Sampdoria in Italy,” he said in his first interview with MUTV in English.

“I did a lot of training [with him], maybe I have a decision in my head when he takes the ball and I say he’s shooting to the right for sure and I go there.

"It’s very good for the group and for me.”

After a string of subsequent saves at St Mary’s, Romero’s confidence is high going into the Europa League final which Jose Mourinho has confirmed he will start in.

Romero says his confidence is high for the clash with Ajax in Sweden that can confirm Champions League status next season after keeping a clean sheet on Wednesday night.

“Yes, it’s very important. I arrived here [on a] free [transfer], nobody knew me and now Jose [Mourinho] gave me a lot of confidence and the players give me a lot of confidence and for me it’s very important,” he said.

“I try to do my best for the team. The most important thing is the group and the fans and we go there in Stockholm for the win.”

Why Jose Mourinho’s claims about his tired Manchester United squad are not backed up by the numbers

Show/hide article…

Jose Mourinho has complained incessantly about the amount his players have had to play recently, so we decided to look at the numbers and see if there was any weight behind what he was saying.

Here, we chart the 20 players from Premier League clubs to have played the most minutes in all competitions this season.

If Mourinho is right, you’d expect almost all of them to be United players, right? They’ve made it to two finals, and had it so much worse than everyone else, after all. Well, well, well Jose…
