Saints target smiles and goals against Stoke

Show/hide article…

MAYA Yoshida has urged Saints to put the smiles back on supporters’ faces in their season finale against Stoke on Sunday, following a frustrating goalless draw against Manchester United.

Manolo Gabbiadini missed a penalty early on as Saints, for the fourth game in a row, drew a blank at home – which meant Claude Puel’s men have scored just 17 goals in 18 outings at St Mary’s this term.

The fans have been dissatisfied with Saints’ home performances for some time and showed their emotions again by booing at certain points in the 0-0 draw.

“We rotated the players this week [against Middlesbrough] and I think the manager (Claude Puel) thought the attackers were fresh,” explained Yoshida.

“But it still wasn’t enough. There’s small things [to rectify], but hopefully against Stoke we can change that.

“I want to finish the season very strongly and with a lot of smiles and hopefully get three points in the end.”

“Stoke are struggling as well,” he added, “We have an opportunity to get many goals hopefully, but my job is to make the defence solid.

“I’ve got to focus on that but also chances from set pieces.”

The Japan international was taking the positives from the Red Devils result, having sealed a 14th Premier League clean sheet in the game against Jose Mourinho’s side.

But he had mixed emotions after failing to dispatch United, who he says “looked like they didn’t even want to play”.

“I’m split,” he said, “because every single game as a defender our aim to make a clean sheet and we did it today.

“In terms of the defensive display and our part in the game I’m very happy.

“But after the game I feel we should have won this game. We should have done better, especially in front of goal and attacking stuff.

“We had more opportunities and Manchester United are not the level they used be and it looked like they didn’t even want to play, especially the right-back (Eric Bailly).

“This, for me, is very strange. It was a huge opportunity to get three points, so, as I say, I’m half disappointed.”

Puel: Saints review “normal”

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel declared himself satisfied with Ralph Krueger’s assertion that the manager’s position would be reviewed at the end of the season, describing it as “normal.”

There is a growing sense that Puel will be axed after just one season in charge at St Mary’s, and Saints chairman Krueger refused the opportunity to say his manager would be in charge next year.

Instead, he said he would leave the football matters to Les Reed, and Puel’s position, along with all other on the pitch factors, would be reviewed come the end of the campaign.

Puel took it in his stride and reacted: “He (Krueger) says just we make a review about the season and I think it is the same with all trainers.

“Any teams have a debrief at the end of the season and this is normal but the end of the season is after the last game and the last game is very important.

“For the moment it is important to keep the good focus about the pitch and we have the possibility to finish up the table and this is most important.

“Afterwards we have time to discuss different things like any team.”

Saints round off their season at home to Stoke on Sunday and are favourites to finish eighth following a goalless draw against United at St Mary’s last night.

It was a case of the same old story as Saints created chances and failed to take them.

“We want to play, we try to play but without success today,” reflected Puel.

“It was difficult first half I think this game without good intensity and I don’t know if the penalty gives a bad feeling for the players but it was not enough.

“It was interesting to see all the team come back in the second half with good intensity, rhythm and quality.

“We had situations and opportunities to score and at the end it is a shame with this result.

“Two or three times from a counter attack we can concede a goal but it was important to have this good answer in the second half with many possibilities and 15 shots in the game and we can shoot more with good situations and possibilities and with shots on target it is interesting.

“We face a goalkeeper who made fantastic saves also and sometimes I thought the ball is going in and this was difficult.

“Of course we wanted to win this game and we try with the intention to win this game but one point and also prepare the last game with good possibilities and intensity and good focus about this last game.

“It will be important to recover after this game because we play every three days and it will be difficult to prepare this game but the last game at home in front of our home fans I hope a good reward for the players.”

THE VERDICT: More knocks for Puel

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel must have had at least one moment last night where he wondered whether this was all worth it.

A home draw against Manchester United lifted his side clear into eighth place in the Premier League and made them clear favourites to secure that position come the final whistle on Sunday. He has also guided Saints to the EFL Cup final in his first season.

And yet he was booed when making a second half substitution and one of the biggest cheers of the evening from the Saints fans came when their ailing manager was hit by a flying ball while stood in his technical area.

With chairman Ralph Krueger’s comments the previous day, where he said Puel’s future would be discussed in a regular end of season review, rather than publicly backing a manager less than a year into a three-year deal, it added even more question marks over his tenure at Saints.

Indeed, it was interpreted by many as a clear hint that Puel’s stay at Saints will be limited to just one season and another new manager will be trying his hand next season.

Puel will no doubt feel that when it comes to the final equation – eighth and the EFL Cup final given the injuries to his two best players and the strength of the squad – there was no more he could do.

But again last night events conspired against him at Saints, and there were more missed chances to add to the growing pile. But, quite simply, more than six hours without a goal at home is not good enough.

How frustrating, yet again, for him that the goals came away at Boro and not against United to win over wavering fans, and maybe board members too.

When we talk about things conspiring, Puel might also wonder if this is just destined not to happen for him.

There wouldn’t be more contentment with performances, but had Saints converted two of their recent penalties – at home to Hull and United – and those matches both been wins then there may be significantly less pressure right now.

But when things aren’t going your way, when it seems the writing is on the wall, it feels almost inevitable.

That Saints have now missed their last three penalties, in the space of just five games, sums it all up.

A home draw with United is not a bad result, but four games without a goal is less than expected, or needed for Puel.

And for the players it is becoming harder.

Even in the early stages of last night’s match there were groans of frustration even when a simple and routine pass went backwards.

Alright, this is not a dynamic Saints side under Puel, and it can be annoying not to see them counter attack with more purpose or press higher up the pitch.

But keeping possession in regulation circumstances is better than giving the ball away, but when the tide has turned against you, as it seems it has at St Mary’s, it is hard to turn around.

Despite some of the moans, it was a frantic start to the game, with Saints playing well.

They should have taken the lead after just five minutes as referee Mike Dean incorrectly adjudged that Eric Bailly’s bizarre handball in attempting to bring down a high diagonal pass from Cedric Soares under no pressure whatsoever was inside the box.

With Dusan Tadic and Shane Long having both missed penalties in recent weeks it was left to Manolo Gabbiadini for spot kick duties.

This time it was Sergio Romero who made the save down to his right. It was a poor penalty in truth, Gabbiadini’s stuttering run-up making it pretty clear which way he was going, and giving the United keeper time to get there given it wasn’t all that well directed.

Bailly was in the action again moments later, this time on the counter attack after intercepting Nathan Redmond’s misplaced pass, but his shot from outside the area was solidly saved by Fraser Forster.

Anthony Martial threatened but fired wide before Forster was in action again to save away to his right from Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s low shot from distance.

The lively pace was unlikely to be sustained and sure enough the game went a little flat.

Saints had the last say of the goalless first half as Redmond’s deflected shot was fielded by Romero.

They had a real crack at the beginning of the second period as they came flying out at United, challenging Romero to make a hat-trick of saves in the space of seven minutes.

On 52 minutes he pushed away a driven effort from Tadic after a crafty free kick lay-off by James Ward-Prowse. There was an even better stop four minutes later as Redmond played the ball to Oriol Romeu to side foot first time, but the keeper was away to his right to turn wide.

Ward-Prowse tested him to the other side with a measured right footed effort but again the United keeper was equal to it.

United had a chance of their own on 66 minutes as Forster managed to hold up Rooney inside the area. However, he found Juan Mata who missed the target when he could have scored from just inside the box.

They came even closer five minutes later as Anthony Martial ran at the Saints defence and opened his body for a shot that struck the post.

Jay Rodriguez added some extra spark as sub and his shot on the turn from just inside the area fizzed narrowly wide of the far post, but it wasn’t to be for Saints or Puel.

A bruise from the ball would just about be the final insult.

Saints and Manchester United draw a blank but are you in our fans pictures?

Show/hide article…

Saints made it four home games in a row without scoring a single goal, drawing 0-0 with Manchester United at St Mary’s.

The Saints support made their feelings very clear as Mike Dean blows for full time, with loud boos emanating from the stands.

It wasn’t the worst performance in the world from Saints - they were the better side for long spells, but they draw a blank, much to the frustration of the home crowd.

It could have been a lot different, but Manolo Gabbiadini failed to convert an early penalty and the second half saw the hosts threaten, but visiting goalkeeper Sergio Romero pulled off a number of good saves to deny Saints.

Photographer Chris Moorhouse was at St Mary’s Stadium, so be sure to check out the pictures above.

Manchester United suffer another injury blow ahead of Europa League final

Show/hide article…

Jose Mourinho is sweating over the fitness of Marouane Fellaini ahead of the Europa League final.

The Belgian midfielder limped off during the goalless draw with Southampton on Wednesday night with what appeared to be a muscle problem.

He had a brief talk with Mourinho before walking straight down the tunnel.

Fellaini missed two of United’s last three games and was unlikely to feature against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

But he is now a doubt for the showdown with Ajax in Stockholm next week.

“Fellaini, on top of his experience, he says it’s not a tear,” the United boss said.

"He says it was a minimal thing but minimal can be a big thing. Let’s wait for tomorrow but he needed to play.

"I couldn’t protect him as he needed to play. He didn’t play for three matches due to suspension.

“Players need not only to rest but also to play. He wasn’t playing a lot so he had to play today. I don’t blame myself or our decision.”

Mourinho also confirmed Eric Bailly picked up a knock at St Marys, although the defender is already out of the Europa League final.
