Lack of scoring continues to haunt Southampton in frustrating home draw

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s penalty curse struck again as they fought out a 0-0 draw at home against Manchester United on Wednesday.

Manolo Gabbiadini became the third player to miss from the spot in the past five games as his sixth-minute effort was saved by stand-in goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

Romero also pulled off a string of good stops in the second half to extend the Saints’ scoring drought at the St Mary’s Stadium.

United might have rested a number of first-team regulars ahead of next week’s Europa League final, but they still had plenty of attacking talent, so it was no mean feat stopping them from scoring.

It is now six hours and counting since Southampton scored at home, and there is no guarantee that will not be extended when Stoke visit on the last day of the season.

Claude Puel clearly needs to spend more time practising penalties with his players, as Southampton have now missed more spot kicks than any other Premier League side.

6 – On the face of it, a 0-0 draw at home to United is not a bad result for an under-pressure manger, but Southampton once again showed a lack of cutting edge in front of goal.

Puel sprung a surprise by handing Matt Targett his first appearance in seven months in place of the “injured” Ryan Bertrand and was booed roundly when he took off James Ward-Prowse for Sofiane Boufal in the second half.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Fraser Forster, 6 – Made one good save early on to deny Eric Bailly, but was relatively untroubled for the rest of the night.

DF Cedric Soares, 6 – Allowed Anthony Martial to get in behind him on a couple of occasions and was thankful his opponent’s finishing let him down.

DF Maya Yoshida, 7 – Did not have to work too hard to keep a fading Wayne Rooney quiet, but led by example as always.

DF Jack Stephens, 6 – Put in another rock-solid game at the end of his breakthrough season.

DF Matt Targett, 6 – Was the shock name on the team sheet and did not let anyone down after being so long out of action because of injury.

MF Steven Davis, 7 – Came out on top in his midfield battle with the un-gamely Marouane Fellaini.

MF Oriol Romeu, 8 – Another superb performance from Southampton’s player of the season. United could do with a player like him in their aging midfield.

MF James Ward-Prowse, 6 – Was let down by his final ball before being taken off to the sound of jeers from the home fans.

MF Dusan Tadic, 6 – Forced a good save from Romero early in the second half, but did not make enough of an impact.

MF Nathan Redmond, 6 – Looked lively early on, but drifted in and out of the game and played the Saints intro trouble at times.

FW Manolo Gabbiadini, 5 – Ran United ragged in the EFL Cup final, but has not been the same player in recent outings and will be haunted by his penalty miss.

MF Sofiane Boufal, 5 – Being booed on will not help his confidence.

FW Jay Rodriguez, 6 – Almost scored with shot across the face of goal.

Premier League out-of-contract XI and every player who’s free to leave

We have created an out-of-contract Premier League XI and listed every squad player who is free to leave their club in the summer…

Manchester City have six big-name players out of contract this summer, with Willy Caballero, Bacary Sagna, Gael Clichy, Jesus Navas and Yaya Toure all making our star-studded bargain team, while Pablo Zabaleta is also available.

Manchester United duo Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Michael Carrick make the side, as does Arsenal playmaker Santi Cazorla.

Chelsea captain John Terry completes the side at centre-back alongside Sunderland’s Jan Kirchhoff, who can play in the position but is primarily a defensive midfielder.

Check out the out-of-contract XI in formation and discover your club’s out-of-contract stars listed below…

Sunderland want £30m for Pickford as Everton prepare to make bid

Show/hide article…

The England U21 international has been the outstanding performer for Sunderland this season after being entrusted as David Moyes’ No 1 goalkeeper.

Everton held a board meeting in London on Wednesday and have intimated they will make an offer. Though a bid has yet to be received by Sunderland, they expect an opening gambit closer to £15m.

The relegated North East club will maintain they want the best possible price for the 23-year-old as the funds could prove crucial to the club’s rebuild.

Moyes had just three players in his starting eleven against Swansea City last weekend that were under binding contract for beyond this summer, with the rest either on loan or players who are out of contract or have release clauses.

He will see owner Ellis Short early next week for talks regarding budgets, which could determine whether he stays.

Moyes is facing the prospect of having to sign around ten players and early indications have been that he will receive a limited budget and instead be asked to re-invest transfer fees are brought in via sales.

Pickford, Lamine Kone, Papy Djilibodji, Fabio Borini and Bryan Oviedo are among those most likely to attract bids.

Sunderland are aware that Newcastle spent £50m to help fund Rafa Benitez’s promotion push last year while Aston Villa spent £60.5m but laboured to finish 13th.

Tottenham have no intention of selling Eric Dier this summer.

The England international is admired by Manchester United but the Old Trafford club do not hold much hope of prising him away, with Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino underlining they will only sell who they want to.

Spurs have not been made aware of Dier wishing to leave, though it is widely known thay they pay substantially less wages than their Old Trafford counterparts.

They will, however, consider selling Kyle Walker for a fee of around £45m, should that arrive from Manchester City or other suitors.

Tottenham have expressed interest in adding new midfielders, though Everton have renewed hope that Ross Barkley may sign an extension while Ajax captain Davy Klaassen has also been discussed.

However, the idea is to increase competition and improve the quality of their strength in depth, which has been sorely exposed at times this season.

Monaco’s Almamy Traore and Djibril Sidibe have come under scrutiny as has Sampdoria’s Patrick Schick and Ajax defender Joel Veltman but they face strong competition from clubs willing to pay more.

Chelsea are already fielding enquiries for England U17 international Callum Hudson-Odoi.

The 16-year-old scored for England in their European Championship win over Turkey on Tuesday and in the group stage against Holland.

The London-born youngster, who can play on either wing or behind the striker, has been a regular in Chelsea’s youth sides and is wanted by several Championship sides on loan for next season. He turns 17 in November.

Southampton, West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace were all represented on Wednesday night as Henry Onyekuru scored again for Eupen against Royal Excel Mouscron.

The 19-year-old has now scored 23 goals and provided 14 assists this season which has already prompted offers from Anderlecht and Club Brugge.

Plenty of Premier League clubs, including Liverpool and Everton, have made enquiries and been to watch him in recent months following Celtic’s failed bid to sign him in January.

He is keen to come to England but clubs here will have to pay just over £6.2m plus offer wages of around £32,000 a week for the young Nigerian to gain a work permit on the totting up points system.

Southampton have shown the keenest interest and club scouts watched him on Wednesday night in the Belgian League’s Europa League play-offs as Onyekuru went on a mazy run across half of the pitch before scoring in the 72nd minute.

Huddersfield Town hero Danny Ward is expected to be recalled by parent club Liverpool following his role in the Championship side’s promotion push.

The 23-year-old has impressed once again this season after a successful spell on loan at Aberdeen last year. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has faced criticism for his loyalty towards Simon Mignolet but it has paid off with the Belgian international’s improved performances.

Klopp had been pushed to sign a new keeper to challenge Mignolet with Loris Karius failing to have the desired impact but Ward is expected to be thrown into the mix come pre-season to increase competition.

Promotion for Huddersfield could yet prompt a request from Klopp’s friend David Wagner to keep Ward for another season but Liverpool have high hopes for the young Wales international.

Manager Rafa Benitez is prepared to sell the Scotland international to help boost his transfer funds with Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross, Manchester City’s Eliquim Mangala and Wes Morgan at Leicester among his extensive list of defensive targets.

Striker Daryl Murphy is also likely to go.

Claude Puel shouldn’t shoulder all of the blame for Southampton’s season

Show/hide article…

Fall guy: A person who is falsely blamed for something that has gone wrong, according to the Oxford Dictionary.

Southampton manager Claude Puel could be forgiven for pointing out the definition to his bosses when he is summoned to an end-of-season review meeting, which will decide his future next week.

It is true Puel has made mistakes in his first season in the Premier League, but Southampton’s failure to emulate their lofty finishing positions from the previous three years cannot solely be laid at the feet of the Frenchman.

Yes, his insistence on squad rotation was a major factor in Southampton’s disastrous Europa League campaign and his negative tactics have made their matches a real turnoff, especially at home, where fans have been starved of entertainment and goals.

It is also true that record buy Sofiane Boufal, handpicked by Puel as his marquee signing, has been a flop and that the former Lille and Nice coach has alienated several senior players.

But it was hard not to feel sympathy for Puel when he was roundly booed by his own supporters after taking off James Ward-Prowse to bring on Boufal in the closing stages of Wednesday’s 0-0 draw at home to Manchester United.

A 0-0 draw against a team that despite their recent woes are still widely regarded as one of the best in Europe, let’s not forget.

Not that the newly crowned vice chairman of football, Les Reed, will have been overly concerned for Puel as he looked down on the anarchy from the directors’ box.

For all the time Puel is taking the flak, it is helping Reed and his fellow boardroom bigwigs hide their own failings and keeping them out of the spotlight.

It is hardly Puel’s fault they sanctioned the sale of Graziano Pelle, Southampton’s main striker for the past two seasons, last summer and did not provide his manager with a new front-man until Manolo Gabbiadini was signed from Napoli in January, by which time their European dream had already gone up in smoke.

Was Puel to blame for cashing in on Sadio Mane, Southampton’s greatest attacking weapon, and trying to replace him on the cheap with Nathan Redmond?

Was it Puel’s doing that Reed promised captain Jose Fonte would be allowed to leave only if a suitable replacement was found and then flogged the Euro 2016 winner to West Ham without recruiting?

He also has been a victim of Southampton’s success under predecessor Ronald Koeman and Mauricio Pochettino before him, with Reed and chairman Ralph Krueger convincing the fans they should be Champions League contenders despite selling their best players.

That target is simply not achievable under the current business model and without significant investment in the playing squad.

In fact, it is fanciful in the extreme to think Southampton can go toe-to-toe over a 38-game season with the likes of Chelsea, the two Manchester clubs, Liverpool and north London giants Tottenham and Arsenal.

The raw truth is that since cementing themselves back in the top-flight after a difficult first season following promotion from the Championship in 2012, Southampton have punched above their weight.

During their first stint in the Premier League, when they relied too heavily on Matt Le Tissier’s brilliance to save them from relegation before their luck finally ran out in 2005, those fans calling for Puel’s head could only dream of seeing a top-10 finish and League Cup final defeat as underachieving.

Reed has rightly taken the credit for keeping Southampton upwardly mobile while managing the annual summer fire sale, so it is only correct he should shoulder a share of responsibility for what is perceived as taking a backward step.

In the end, it is likely Puel will be the ultimate fall guy and that Sunday’s match at home to Stoke will be his defiant last stand, but sacking him should not take the heat completely off Reed and the board.

Henry Onyekuru attracting Everton, Southampton and West Brom

Show/hide article…

Everton, Southampton and West Bromwich Albion are interested in signing Nigerian striker Henry Onyekuru from KAS Eupen, Sky sources understand.

Onyekuru, 19, became the top scorer in Belgium when he scored his 22nd goal of the season on Wednesday night.

The forward’s representatives have already told Sky Sports News HQ he wants to play in England and talks with two unnamed clubs were understood to be progressing well earlier this week.

Sources close to the player now say they are confident the forward will be playing in the Premier League next season.

Onyekuru, who has a £6.8m release clause in his contract, has already turned down moves to Belgian giants Brugge and Anderlecht.

Celtic are also understood to have come close to signing him in January but Eupen refused to sell him during the winter transfer window.

Onyekuru made his debut for Eupen in 2015 as a 17-year-old and helped the club achieve promotion to the Belgian top flight in his debut season.

Matt Oakley: Exeter and ex-Southampton midfielder to retire at end of season

Show/hide article…

Exeter City’s former Southampton midfielder Matt Oakley has announced he will retire at the end of the season.

The 39-year-old has made 694 career appearances, reaching the 2003 FA Cup final with the Saints and winning promotion with Derby and Leicester.

He has been at the Devon side since an initial loan spell in 2011, playing 172 times without scoring a goal.

“He’s been a great servant to Exeter in the five-and-a-half years he’s been at the club,” said manager Paul Tisdale.

“There are few players in modern football with his CV and achievements at the top level, who actively give something back to the game at the lower level once their elite playing days are over.”

Oakley made his name with Southampton, making 311 appearances in a 12-year spell at the Hampshire side.

He could still play a part as Exeter attempt to gain promotion from League Two via the play-offs - if they are successful, it would mean the veteran will have gone up from all three EFL divisions.
