Rodriguez profits from Saints rotation

Show/hide article…

Jay Rodriguez (£5.9m) was awarded the maximum Fantasy Premier League bonus points from Southampton’s 2-1 away win over Middlesbrough.

Scoring 35 in the Bonus Points System (BPS), Rodriguez was afforded a rare opportunity up front and responded with a goal and assist.

He also made five recoveries and completed 83% of 30 attempted passes as the visitors ended a three-match goalless streak.

Middlesbrough’s Patrick Bamford (£4.9m) received two bonus points, with 26 in the BPS.

Stationed on the right wing in his first Premier League start for Boro, Bamford scored the hosts’ consolation goal and made three recoveries.

The Saints attacker recorded a BPS tally of 23 after emerging from the bench at the break to net a second-half winner for Claude Puel’s men.

Bamford earned top spot in the ICT Index with a score of 13.6 - comfortably his best of the campaign.

An impressive Threat score of 84 underpinned that total, with Bamford enjoying more touches in the opposition penalty area than any other player, firing four close-range efforts.

Rodriguez ranked second in the Index with a score of 9.9.

Listed as an FPL midfielder, the versatile attacker had just three touches in the Middlesbrough penalty area - each one a shot on goal.

Having last started a Premier League match in Gameweek 30, Rodriguez was barely considered as an FPL target ahead of the Gameweek 37 fixtures.

However, Southampton’s busy schedule meant that Puel made seven changes to his line-up.

Jack Stephens (£4.2m and 40,000+ transfers in), Manolo Gabbiadini (£6.6m and 27,000+) and Cedric Soares (£4.9m and 19,000+) were all subject to significant investment ahead of Friday evening’s deadline.

However, along with James Ward-Prowse (£5.0m) and Dusan Tadic (£6.9m), they played no part in the Saturday’s victory.

They will push for a return for Wednesday’s visit of Manchester United, although many of Gabbiadini’s owners have already parted company.

With a single assist in his last six appearances, the Italian is second only to Romelu Lukaku (£10.1m) for sales among FPL forwards ahead of a Gameweek 38 St Mary’s Stadium meeting with Stoke City.

Claude Puel ignoring speculation over Southampton future

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel says his focus is on Southampton’s remaining games and not on speculation he is about to lose his job.

A report in the Independent last week claimed Saints had sounded out Hull boss Marco Silva about the possibility of replacing Puel after just one season.

The Frenchman took his side to the EFL Cup final in February and will secure an eighth-placed finish in the Premier League if they win their final two games, although that would still leave them 12 points and two places worse off than last year.

Puel signed a three-year deal last summer, and ahead of Wednesday’s meeting with Manchester United, live on Sky Sports, he said: "I cannot be distracted about the speculation.

"The most important thing is to think about finishing strong in the Premier League. After that, I cannot make comments about speculation.

"I’m on contract, a three-year contract, with a project. I am happy here, with the directors, the staff and the players but the most important to continue to improve.

“There’s no need to give assurances because it matters about what is on the pitch with the quality. It’s the second youngest team in the table and we continue to improve for the future.”

United beat Saints at Wembley back in February, but Jose Mourinho is again likely to rest players with next week’s Europa League final in mind.

Puel said: "This team has great players and a strong squad. For example, Ander Herrera, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Paul Pogba, and Marcus Rashford can all play against us because they were rested for the last game.

“In any game, they have a strong team and it will a difficult game against Manchester United and they will play with a good intensity and try and take points off us.”

Henry Onyekuru in talks with two Premier League clubs

Henry Onyekuru is in talks with two Premier League clubs, according to Sky sources.

The 19-year-old Nigerian forward, who plays for KAS Eupen in Belgium, has been watched by a number of teams this season, including Everton, Southampton and West Ham.

His representatives have told Sky Sports News HQ he wants to play in England and talks with two unnamed clubs are progressing well.

Onyekuru, who has a £6.8m release clause in his contract, has already turned down moves to Belgian giants Club Brugge and Anderlecht.

We understand Celtic came close to signing him in January but Eupen refused to sell him during the winter transfer window.

He has scored 20 times in the league this season playing for Eupen, who finished 13th in the 16-team Belgian First Division.

That includes eight goals in his last eight games in Playoff Group B.

Saints handed van Dijk boost

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk has returned to the fringes of first team training.

The Dutch centre half, who has been sidelined since January, started the final week of the season by putting on his kit and heading out to train at Staplewood with the first team squad.

Though it was only light running rather full training, the 25-year-old is showing encouraging signs of progress.

“No injuries,” said Puel ahead of tomorrow night’s game against Manchester United. “A good thing this morning was I saw running Virgil on the pitch and this was good news.

“It was good to see him again on the pitch.”

However, there is no chance of van Dijk figuring in the final two games of the campaign.

“No he is not available,” insisted Puel. “It was his first run and it was a good thing.

“He does not have the possibility to participate with the team until the end of the season.”

Charlie Austin is also starting to get up to speed again, and played his first minutes since December as a late sub in the win over Middlesbrough.

There is now a clamour for the club’s top scorer to start against either United or Stoke in the final days of the campaign, but Puel reflected: “We have different possibilities and it’s a good thing to see Charlie come back on the squad of course but now he comes in with competition with other players like Long, Rodriguez, Gabbiadini.

“I hope he can play a little before the end of the season of course but competition is normal with different players.

“He needs rhythm and intensity after his five months out of the squad. It is normal but he is good physically fit and this is important.”

He made seven changes for the game against Middlesbrough in order to keep players fresh, but after a solid win will have to drop some of his stars who performed well if he is to rotate again.

And all that while not really knowing exactly what his United counterpart Jose Mourinho will do as he targets success in the Europa League final next week.

“We can see this team all the time with great players, a strong squad,” reckoned Puel.

“For example, Mkhitaryan, Pogba, Rashford, can play against us because they recover the last game.

“They have a strong team and it will be a difficult game against Manchester United and they will try to play with a good intensity and take points off us.”

He added: “For me the opponent is not important. The most important for me is my team to enjoy our football, our game, and if we have the good focus and the good concentration about our game we can play against any opponent or great team. We need the good answer every time.

“We can play good counter attack and with possession also and this different identity and this is the most important to give the players the possibility to give the good answer and just this.”
