WATCH and VOTE: Premier League goals of the week

Show/hide article…

There were some great strikes in the Premier League this weekend. Watch our pick of the best and vote for your favourite.

But who scored the best goal in the Premier League this weekend? Hit play on the video above then cast your vote below…

Shinji Okazaki - Manchester City 2-1 LEICESTER: City, strolling towards the break with a two-goal lead, were stopped in their tracks as Okazaki’s spectacular improvised volley cut the hosts lead three minutes before the interval.

Nathan Redmond - Middlesbrough 1-2 SOUTHAMPTON: Redmond made the hosts pay for their lack of potency, ruthlessly curling into the top corner after striding into the box, taking advantage of some slack Boro marking.

Ross Barkley - EVERTON 1-0 Watford: Barkley brushed aside speculation about his future to fire in Everton’s winner in their 1-0 victory at home to Watford on Friday night. Barkley stepped up in the 56th minute to power home Everton’s only goal from 25 yards out.

Kyle Naughton - Sunderland 0-2 SWANSEA: Naughton flashed an effort into the top corner from a tight angle in the third minute of added time at the end of the first half. It was Naughton’s first ever Premier League goal for Swansea in what was his 141st appearance, and it left the hosts with a mountain to climb after the break.

Mesut Ozil - Stoke 1-4 ARSENAL: Alexis Sanchez and Ozil combined beautifully to double the visitors’ lead. The Chile forward threaded an inch-perfect pass to Ozil, who neatly lifted his finish over the advancing Jack Butland.

Philippe Coutinho - West Ham 0-4 LIVERPOOL: Georginio Wijnaldum smashed a superb volley off the bar, but as the ball fell to Coutinho, the Brazilian weaved his way through the West Ham defence before driving an effort past Adrian to double Liverpool’s lead.

Stat Pack: Southampton vs Manchester United

Show/hide article…

Southampton are winless in their last five home Premier League games against the Red Devils, losing four of those by a single goal margin (D1).

Manchester United’s last away defeat in the Premier League to Southampton came in August 2003, with James Beattie scoring the only goal of the game.

Four of Manchester United’s five goals against Southampton in all competitions this season have been scored by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has been ruled out for the season.

Manolo Gabbadiani netted both of Southampton’s goals in the EFL Cup Final in February.

Manchester United have come from behind to beat Southampton on eight occasions in the Premier League (including in this exact fixture last season) – the most any team has done so against another in the competition’s history.

Southampton have failed to score in their last three home league games, but they’ve never gone four top-flight home games without a goal.

Manchester United haven’t lost three successive Premier League games in a row (or in a single month) since December 2015 under Louis Van Gaal.

Jose Mourinho’s side have won more points away from home this season in the Premier League (34 in 18 games) than they have at Old Trafford (31 in 18 games).

Manchester United (17 wins) need to win both of their remaining Premier League games in 2016-17 to avoid it being their lowest tally of wins in a single Premier League season. They won 19 in both 2013-14 and 2015-16.

Expected Man Utd XI: Jose Mourinho to name surprising 4-3-3 at Southampton

Show/hide article…

MANCHESTER UNITED travel to Southampton on Wednesday, but who will start?

The Red Devils take on the Saints a week out from their Europa League final against Ajax in Stockholm.

And while Jose Mourinho fielded a weakened side at Tottenham on Sunday, and is likely to do so again against Crystal Palace this weekend, we think he’ll select a strong team at St Mary’s as a dry run for the final itself.

How much could your Premier League club earn in prize money?

Show/hide article…

The remaining handful of Premier League fixtures could be worth up to £17.1m in prize money to some clubs.

A cool £1.9m is awarded by the Premier League for each place from 20th upwards, and with the help of transfermarkt.co.uk, we’ve worked out how much prize money your club could lose or gain in the final week of the campaign.

Watford, currently in 16th, have the biggest potential swing, with a possible finish between eighth and 17th and a difference of £17.1m in prize money. The Hornets go to newly crowned champions Chelsea on Monday Night Football, live on Sky Sports, before hosting Manchester City on the final day.

Both Leicester and West Ham have a potential £13.3m difference in prize money available in their remaining games, while Crystal Palace, Stoke and Burnley all have reasons to field strong teams for their final game, with a difference of £11.4m up for grabs.

Chelsea claimed their fifth Premier League title with a 1-0 win over West Brom on Friday and will pocket £38m in prize money, while Spurs guaranteed the runners-up spot after beating Manchester United 2-1 in their last game at White Hart Lane on Sunday, and with it a £36.1m cheque.

That defeat made it mathematically impossible for United to finish in the top four, with Jose Mourinho concentrating on the upcoming Europa League final against Ajax for Champions League qualification. They can pick up between £30.4m and £28.5m in prize money in their two remaining Premier League games.

Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal are the remaining challengers for the two remaining top-four places, while Everton will finish seventh, regardless of the outcome from their remaining fixture against Arsenal, and are guaranteed to pick up £26.6m.

Hull lost their fight for Premier League survival after a 4-0 defeat at Crystal Palace, and are guaranteed £5.7m in prize money, and they join Sunderland and Middlesbrough in the Championship next season, who both have pride and £1.9m to play for in their final games.

Check out the graphic below to see where your club could finish, and how much that means to the bank balance…

Deal agreed ahead of Southampton v Man United game: Unique shirts will be worn

Show/hide article…

The Virgin Media logo usually adorns both home and away Saints kits.

But on Wednesday at St Mary’s it won’t after a deal was done between them and disability charity Scope.

As part of it, Scope will appear on the front of the shirts as a plan to highlight disability discrimination in football grounds.

Startling new research published today showed that disabled football fans feel excluded from live games.

Eight in ten who attend football stadiums across the UK say they have experienced some form of discrimination or other issues resulting from their disability.

Weekend grades: Phil Thompson offers his verdict on the weekend’s Premier League action

Show/hide article…

Did your team live up to expectations this weekend in the Premier League?

We’ve asked former Liverpool and England defender Phil Thompson to give each side a grade based on their performance in the weekend’s fixtures.

So, who finished top of the class? Did your team get an A+, an F, or something in between? Read on for the Sky Sports pundit’s verdict…

A great display considering they only had 30 per cent possession, they took their chances and scored early and it was a pressure game.

Defensively they were poor. They had loads of possession, but they did not have enough about them to break Palace down.

I was a bit disappointed with West Ham, whose fans I felt for a little bit as even in the first half they made very little attempt to take Liverpool on. It was their final home game and I thought they would make a better showing, so in that context I would have to give them a ‘C’.

It was an incredible performance because the players, in both the defence and the attack, were under immense pressure. Keep a clean sheet, try and score a goal and the first goal was so important to the side. It was like going back to the start of the season, so you would have to give an ‘A+’ given it was away from home and under immense pressure.

Great game, fantastic atmosphere, they got the start they wanted after about six minutes with Victor Wanyama’s goal and it was a very, very good performance from them and I will give them an ‘A’ because you have to try and play and keep the emotion of the day aside and I think they got that balance right.

Jose Mourinho has his injuries, so he is trying to protect those players, but I will give them a ‘B’ for this game as it was a difficult one with a different back four with Eric Bailly at right back and Daley Blind at left back, so I will give them a ‘B’ for this game.

Second half I thought they found it extremely difficult and they were fortunate with David Silva’s goal, so I would have to give them a ‘B’ on the day.

A plucky display and in the second half they actually took the game to City and for that, I would have to give them a ‘B’ because overall, I thought they actually deserved to take something from the game.

They fully deserved to win this game, even though it looks a bit closer than it actually was.

They find it very difficult away from home, apart from their win at Palace the other week, although they have had a fine season and so a ‘C+’ for them.

I was a little bit disappointed in them with Southampton having little to play for and I was surprised they did not have just a little bit more of a go. I am pleased they got a goal back, just for the fans, which was good, but I would have to give them a ‘C’ on the day as it was just was not enough, as it has been all season.

They scored a couple of brilliant goals through Jay Rodriguez and Nathan Redmond, who I was surprised was only a sub, but I would have to give them a ‘B’.

It was a difficult game for them as they were already down, but given the way their season has gone, I would have to give them a ‘D’ - they got beaten at home and the showing on the day was not good enough for the fans.

They have done ever so well and because of the pressure they were under to get a result away from home, I am going to have to give them an ‘A’.

Arsenal getting the first goal was important and I would have to give Stoke a ‘C’.

Arsenal had given themselves a good chance of getting in the Premier League top four with this result, so with it being away from home, I would have to give them an ‘A’.

Both sides had good chances in this game, although Everton could have scored a couple of goals, so I will give them a ‘B’.

I actually think Watford performed a little bit better in this game than they had been of late - they made a good fist of the game and Stefano Okaka had a good few chances, so I will give them a ‘B’ too.

They have had a difficult end to the season, but they had a couple of good chances with Nacer Chadli and Salomon Rondon, nothing great, but at times they were playing with a back six, hanging in there and just looking to hit Chelsea on the counter. So I will be kind and give them a ‘B’ because they were playing against the champions.

They find a way to get the results, and I am going to give them an ‘A+’ as they got there in the end.

Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez tops ’ Power Rankings

Show/hide article…

Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez has topped the Power Rankings and also leads the season chart as we enter the final week.

Sanchez has spearheaded the Gunners’ resurgence in form, scoring and assisting during a 2-0 win at Southampton on Wednesday and again in the 4-1 win at Stoke on Saturday.

The Chile international has also leapfrogged Chelsea midfielder Eden Hazard in the Power Rankings season chart with fewer than 5,000 points dividing the pair.

Arsene Wenger’s chances of a 21st consecutive top-four finish have also been boosted by the form of keeper Petr Cech (No 3, up 11 places), Olivier Giroud (No 4, up 11 places) and Mesut Ozil (No 6, up 50 places).

Last week’s chart topper Kevin De Bruyne slipped four places to No 5 this week, despite Manchester City claiming a narrow 2-1 win over Leicester on Saturday.

Liverpool ace Philippe Coutinho (No 2, up 52 places) converted two spectacular solo efforts during the Reds’ 4-0 win at West Ham to ensure Champions League qualification remains in their own hands.

Chelsea sealed their fifth Premier League title with a 1-0 win at West Brom on Friday, with Diego Costa dropping six places to No 8, while team-mates Marcos Alonso (No 9, down six places) and Cesar Azpilicueta (No 10, up 12 places) also made the top 10.

Swansea were assured Premier League survival following a 2-0 win at Sunderland, with 'keeper Lukasz Fabianski (No 7, up four places) keeping his third clean sheet in four games, and Hull losing 4-0 at Crystal Palace.

The Power Rankings methodology reflects a player’s performance over the last five matchdays by awarding points to players for 32 different stats.

Below, we present this week’s Power Rankings, your club’s top points scorer and the accumulative season rankings.

The Sky Sports Power Rankings is updated every Tuesday during the season, but we will be revealing the final season chart and Power Rankings winner on Monday, May 22…
