Southampton not out for EFL Cup revenge against Man United - Puel

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Puel says the club’s midweek Premier League clash against Manchester United should not be billed as a revenge mission following their EFL Cup final defeat in February.

Southampton welcome Jose Mourinho’s men to St Mary’s on Wednesday in a rematch of their five-goal thriller at Wembley, when United went on to win 3-2.

With a Europa League final on the horizon, Mourinho could make changes following the 2-1 defeat at Tottenham on Sunday.

However, Puel dismissed the notion that Wednesday’s encounter presents the ideal time to face United, while insisting his side are not out to make up for their Wembley heartbreak.

"No, no it’s just another game,’’ Puel said. "It’s been a long time since the [EFL Cup] final against Manchester United, It’s a Premier League game, so we cannot just focus about that game. The game is not revenge because it’s important to keep a good energy and to enjoy our football and just to focus about this, not anything else.

"This team has great players and a strong squad. For example, [Ander] Herrera, [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan, [Paul] Pogba, and [Marcus] Rashford can all play against us because they were rested for the last game.

"In any game, they have a strong team and it will a difficult game against Manchester United, and they will play with a good intensity and try and take points off us.’’

Southampton have not registered a Premier League home victory over United since 2003, when James Beattie scored a late winner for Gordon Strachan’s side.

Meanwhile, the future of former Lyon boss Puel has come under scrutiny, despite Southampton reaching the EFL Cup final and having the possibility to finish eighth in the Premier League.

Puel, however, would not be drawn into sharing his view on the rumours surrounding his job, claiming that having one of the youngest squads in the Premier League and producing the results they have achieved should justify the work he has done in his first season.

"I cannot be distracted about the speculation,’’ he said. "The most important thing is to think about finishing strong in the Premier League. After that, I cannot make comments about speculation.

"I’m on contract, a three-year contract, with a project. I am happy here, with the directors, the staff and the players, but the most important is to continue to improve.

"There’s no need to give assurances because it matters about what is on the pitch with the quality. It’s the second youngest team in the table and we continue to improve for the future.’’

WATCH: Monday Night Football’s season review

Show/hide article…

It was time for reflection on the final Monday Night Football of the 2016/17 season.

That meant it was time for a season review, in a year which has seen several special guests join Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher in the studio, including Jurgen Klopp, Claudio Ranieri and Chris Coleman, as well as several special goals.

There have been plenty of laughs, bizarre moments and also a few amusing technological malfunctions.

Of course, there have also been memorable matches, including Leicester beating Liverpool after Ranieri’s departure, Eden Hazard leading Chelsea past West Ham and Crystal Palace beating Arsenal.

Neville was asked “how does it feel to lose 7-0” after his time in charge of Valencia and Klopp was asked how to make his Liverpool team taller.

And throughout it all there was expert analysis from Neville and Carragher on the 2016/17 campaign, with Premier League champions Chelsea rounding it off with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Watford.

Hit play on the video at the top of the page to see MNF’s season review.

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville’s picks of the 2016/17 season

Show/hide article…

As the Premier League season draws to a close, Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville dished out a few accolades on Monday Night Football.

The Sky Sports duo chose their top player and manager from the 2016/17 Premier League season, as well as picking their ultimate XI from the campaign.

They also chose their goals of the season - plus their top young player and signing from the campaign - as well as a player they can’t wait to watch next term…

He’s the best player in the league. There’s no doubt he had a massive drop off last season but over the last three years - he was player of the season in the first year and this year N’Golo Kante’s won it. It’s difficult to argue with that because he’s been outstanding, but I’m just going with the player that gets you off the edge of your seat and that’s Hazard.

He’s a huge influence on this Chelsea team. I saw the way they celebrated winning the title with him on Saturday night - they threw him up in the air amongst a couple of other players - but it just seemed like a thank you because they realise the job he’s done. For me, he’s been the player of the season.

Without a doubt it’s Conte. It’s his first year in the Premier League and to do what he’s done - they are probably favourites to now win the Premier league and FA Cup double - is brilliant. If you think of Pep Guardiola, he knew at Christmas he was coming into Manchester City but Conte had Italy in the summer and his pre-season would have been interrupted. It wouldn’t have been easy going straight in at Chelsea. And the change in system, it is inevitable people will always talk about that but getting top players to go to something and succeed when they’ve never played that way before is a great achievement. He’s made some big decisions and they’ve paid off.

Special mention to three English managers for what they’ve done: Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Paul Clement. They deserve that. You can always look at the manager that’s won the championship but I’ve gone for an alternative.

At the start of the season I thought Tottenham would dip. I thought they would go backwards purely because of their squad and playing in the Champions League and the lack of investment compared to others. For Mauricio Pochettino to achieve what he’s done this year and to get Tottenham into second with a record points haul in the Premier League, it’s an outstanding managerial achievement. Ultimately I’ve gone for him but I couldn’t disagree with Conte and you could also make cases for the three Englishman I mentioned as well.

Easy for me that. One day we’ll be talking about him winning Player of the Year, no doubt. I think Steven Gerrard won Young Player of the Year at that age as well and then went on to win Player of the Year, and I see little difference with Alli when I see him play.

He’s getting to that stage now already where he wouldn’t be that far away from being Player of the Year, I think that’s always a great sign for a young player.

I couldn’t argue with Dele Alli. He’s an amazing player, who I loved watching against Manchester United on Sunday. He was absolutely brilliant. I just think because he’s known to the Premier League he’s expected to reach that level so the emerging young player of the year is Sane.

Kante has been a revelation since he came to England, first with Leicester and now with Chelsea. He has been the best central midfielder in the Premier League this season.

Zlatan’s made a huge impact on United. It was said on MNF a couple of months ago that he could have been player of the season until he got injured. I still think he’s the signing of the season. In that EFL Cup final he carried United through it.

Emre Can’s was a great one, but I think this was better. Carroll is never the most supple of men, so to get himself up high and it’s how hard he hit it. I don’t know why the goalkeeper dived, to be honest. There’s power, connection and it’s right in the top corner. An unbelievable goal.

I’ve gone for this one based on two things; the height of the ball - and also he is further out. I was commentating on that game. All the other types of goals we’ve seen before and they are great goals, but it’s uniqueness. For me, that wins goal of the season.

He’s going to be a star. I think Sergio Aguero has a problem. I don’t know what will happen in the summer, whether Aguero will stay or go. You would think with a player of that quality you would keep him but two or three months into the next season Jesus will be the first choice striker at Man City. Can they play together? I think Aguero has a bigger problem than Jesus.

He’s had an outstanding season. He’s been dependable and reliable - everything you could have questioned him about in the past. John Terry’s leaving now so can David Luiz come back next season and be the John Terry for Chelsea in the next two or three seasons. It will be very interesting to watch.

Emre Can wins Monday Night Football Goal of the Season viewer vote

Show/hide article…

Emre Can’s overhead kick against Watford was voted Goal of the Season by Monday Night Football viewers - but Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville did not agree with the result.

The Liverpool midfielder’s stunning goal, scored on May 1, won our online poll with 35 per cent of the votes - and more than 85,000 were cast on the Sky Sports website.

Can beat Olivier Giroud’s scorpion kick for Arsenal against Crystal Palace (20%), Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s similar effort for Manchester United against Sunderland (17%) and Andy Carroll’s overhead kick for West Ham against Crystal Palace (8%)

However, Carragher insisted Carroll’s goal should have won the award: "Emre Can’s was a great one, but I think this was better. Carroll is never the most supple of men, so to get himself up high and it’s how hard he hit it.

“I don’t know why the goalkeeper dived to be honest. There’s power, connection and it’s right in the top corner. An unbelievable goal.”

And Neville says his vote would have gone to Giroud: "I’ve gone for this one based on two things; the height of the ball - and also he is further out. I was commentating on that game.

“All the other types of goals we’ve seen before and they are great goals, but it’s uniqueness. For me that wins goal of the season.”

After hearing the result of the public vote, he added: "It’s a great goal, but it’s a little unsurprising. If you ever watch X-Factor or those types of programmes it’s always somebody from Liverpool who does well because they always vote for their own in droves!

“It’s a brilliant goal and it would be wrong of me to dispute it, but I think it’s the type of goal we’ve seen quite a bit of. It isn’t for me the best of the season, but how can the public be wrong?”

Hit play on the video at the top of the page to watch the goals. The results of our poll are below…

Puel not on a revenge mission

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has dismissed the notion that Saints are on some kind of revenge mission when they face Manchester United tomorrow night and urged his side to focus purely on themselves.

Saints suffered the heartache of a 3-2 EFL Cup final defeat at the hands of Jose Mourinho’s United at Wembley at the end of February, in game they could, and maybe should, have won.

With United having one eye on next week’s Europa League final, there could be a chance for Saints to get one over the Red Devils at St Mary’s.

But Puel is more concerned with his team than trying to settle an old score.

He said: “It’s another game, it’s a long time now since the final against Manchester United.

“It’s a Premier League game and just focus about this. It is not revenge.

“It is important to keep good energy and enjoy your football and focus about this and not other things.”

Saints have extra motivation for the final two games of the season as they have the chance to finish eighth in the Premier League.

They sit a place behind West Brom, who currently occupy that position, with both teams having two games left to play.

Saints host United tomorrow and Stoke on Sunday, while the Baggies play Man City away tonight and end their campaign at Swansea.

“I think the last result against Middlesbrough allowed us the possibility to finish strong this Premier League,” reflected Puel.

“We saw this game with seven changes and with a good result, good play.

“We saw all the squad always with a good concentration and focus about our games and this is the most important.

“A lot of people ask me about the possibilities of good focus about the game without playing relegation or European games or different things but we showed good intensity, good reason in our games.

“I am happy with the work on the pitch and the training sessions also.

“We make seven changes last game to keep the good result and intensity and different players can recover and this allows the possibility to finish strong and well the two last games.

“I am happy with the spirit and the professional attitude of my players.”

Puel was again asked about his own future and replied: “I cannot be distracted about this, about speculation.

“The most important for me is to stay focussed about our possibility, our football, to finish strong in the Premier League and it will be a good reward for us.

“This is the most important and after I cannot make comments about speculation or other things.”
