Every Premier League club’s second-choice striker ranked from worst to best

Show/hide article…

Andy Carroll could be swapping West Ham for Chelsea this month, as the Blues want to sign the England forward.

However, it is probable he will be leaving the bench at the London Stadium for the one at Stamford Bridge, as it is unlikely he is being bought to replace Alvaro Morata as Chelsea’s first-choice centre forward.

At West Ham he has had to cover for Javier Hernandez this season, and clearly Antonio Conte feels Carroll will be good backup for the Blues.

Carroll is the butt of many jokes, but few would deny he is a fantastic option to have off the bench, making him a valuable second-choice striker.

But where does Carroll rank among all the backup forwards in the 2017-18 Premier League?

Click the right arrow, above, to see all 20 second-choice strikers in the Premier League ranked from worst to best…

*Second-choice forwards determined using minutes played in Premier League this season. Player with most minutes played in the centre-forward position is regarded as first-choice, while player with second-most minutes is regarded as their backup. Only variation on this rule relates to Leicester City who predominantly play with two strikers, so player with third-most minutes is regarded as the backup forward.

*All data correct as of 17/01/2018

Southampton look to conclude quick deal for Monaco’s Argentinian striker Guido Carrillo

Show/hide article…

Southampton are attempting to quickly conclude a deal for Monaco’s Argentinian striker Guido Carrillo.

Manager Mauricio Pellegrino has been promised reinvestment this January following the £75 million sale of Virgil van Dijk and, with the team now only one point above the relegation zone and winless in the Premier League since November, a sense of urgency is developing about the situation.

There was an attempt to bring Theo Walcott back to a club he left 12 years ago, but he instead opted for Everton, and the focus now is on signing Carrillo. The 26 year-old has featured infrequently this season for Monaco in France’s Ligue 1 and Southampton hope to soon complete a deal that would cost around £15m.

Missing out on Walcott was still a considerable disappointment and, while they were reluctant to match Everton in terms of wages, they also discovered the added difficulty of attracting players in the context of their now precarious league position.

Southampton vs Tottenham | Teams, streams, predictions and odds

Show/hide article…

Tottenham travel to Southampton on Sunday less than a month after scoring five against them at Wembley.

Spurs will look to extend their unbeaten run while piling more pressure on Mauricio Pellegrino with the Saints on a 10-game winless streak.

Southampton are beaten Spurs just once since 2005, becoming the final away team to win at White Hart Lane with victory at the end of the 2015-16 season, and have shipped 11 goals on their previous three encounters.

Southampton host Tottenham at St. Mary’s with kick-off scheduled for 4pm on Sunday, January 21.

The match is available via Now TV, with a day pass on offer for £6.99.

The match will be televised live on Sky Sports Premier League and Sky Sports Main Event, with coverage starting from 4pm. Sky Sports subscribers will be able to stream the match online via SkyGo and the SkyGo app.

Alternatively, you can follow all the build-up and action from 3pm with Standard Sport’s London Football live blog.

Harry Winks has been sidelined for the rest of month with an ankle injury, with Danny Rose (knee) a similar timescale.

In more positive news, Toby Alderweireld is nearing a return. The centre-back has been out since November with a hamstring injury and hopes to be back in first-team action for the trip to Liverpool on February 4.

Mauricio Pellegrino has no fresh injury concerns, with Maya Yoshida and Charlie Austin (both hamstring) out for the foreseeable.

Theo Walcott secures £20m Everton transfer from Arsenal and admits: ‘I want to reignite my career’

Show/hide article…

Theo Walcott said that he had chosen “the right time to leave Arsenal” after completing his £20 million move to Everton.

Now 28, Walcott will be 32 by the time his new contract expires and, after more than 400 games and 12 years at Arsenal, is now aiming to help Everton into the Champions League. “I’m very ambitious and I’ve come here because I want the club to push to the next level,” said Walcott.

“With the players that have come in, I feel like the next level can be reached. The club has won trophies but I want them to win trophies now. The manager is very hungry and it’s just what I need. I’ve had a couple of chats with him and straightaway I felt that hunger and that desire that he wanted from me. I need that and I wanted that.”

Walcott, who could also have joined former club Southampton, scored 108 goals for Arsenal despite a sense that he never fulfilled his potential after arriving for what was then a world-record fee for a 16 year-old. He has not started a Premier League game this season. “It was sad but it’s exciting at the same time and I want to reignite my career, “ he said.
