Southampton’s problems: Where has it gone wrong this season?

Show/hide article…

Once an example to others, Southampton are struggling under Mauricio Pellegrino with relegation now a real possibility. It is a tale of poor decisions on and off the pitch coupled with the harsh reality of what happens when momentum is lost, writes Adam Bate.

Southampton are struggling badly. Once reliable players are out of form. The manager’s decisions are being booed. Faith in the owners is fast being lost. Fans are frustrated. Some are even plotting protests. The atmosphere at St Mary’s is far from good and another defeat there to Tottenham on Super Sunday could well leave the club in the relegation zone.

Whatever happened to mid-table? A glance at the names at the bottom end of the Premier League reveals a trend. Brighton and Huddersfield were expected to be there. Newcastle are in disarray. None are out of danger. But there below the newly promoted trio are those erstwhile mid-table regulars Southampton, Stoke, West Bromwich Albion and Swansea.

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins summed up the problem neatly. For clubs of this size, the anticipated growth and stability is not a guarantee. Instead, it brings different problems. “When you get into the Premier League, you have a two-or three-year cycle, and then if you want to retain your players you’re upping their wages again,” explained Jenkins.

“You’ve got a little period where you can be quite comfortable financially and then you’ve got a period where everything starts catching you up and you’ve got to start renewing every contract, and then that continues and continues. With the modern game every renewal is probably £1m a renewal, so your wage bill goes from here to there. It’s not rocket science.”

It is not rocket science but it had once seemed like an art form. Swansea had their on-pitch identity. Southampton, though, had an ethos all of their own. The academy’s uncanny ability to produce Premier League ready talent was the envy of every club in the country. Once that envy subsided, Southampton’s success was seen as an example and an inspiration.

It seemed to ensure that players could be sold each summer without derailing the project. Even a steady stream of managerial departures did not halt the juggernaut. Former chairman Nicola Cortese established that this miracle did not belong to Nigel Adkins. And so it followed that it did not belong to Mauricio Pochettino or Ronald Koeman either.

“We know what we are doing here,” said the club’s current vice-chairman Les Reed in 2014. “There was a five-year plan in 2009 when this club was in League One. We got out of there ahead of target. Then we got out of the Championship ahead of target. We are at the start of our next five-year plan now. There is no panic. We march on.”

Into the fourth year of that five-year plan and things appear to be catching up with the club that prided itself on staying ahead of the game. Some of the reasons for that are simpler than others. Many point the finger at the manager and it is true that diminishing returns in the dugout are a factor. Pellegrino is yet to show the nous of his near-namesake Pochettino.

Team selections and even substitutions have left supporters baffled, particularly at St Mary’s. Games have been there to be won but instead a late goal cost them a point at home to Brighton and two against Arsenal. In the most recent home games against Huddersfield and Crystal Palace, Saints led after an hour both times but ended up with one point not six.

Pellegrino was, of course, unfortunate to be denied victory by the hand of Abdoulaye Doucoure at Watford last time out, but sympathy is now in short supply. Some still point to a failure to press home the initiative. Despite leading four of these matches, Southampton are on a 10-game winless run - the longest sequence in any of England’s top four divisions.

In search of a solution, Pellegrino has only created more problems. Fraser Forster was retained too long in goal. Charlie Austin was not called upon as soon as he should have been. That Nathan Redmond has been dropped from the team on five separate occasions since October is indicative of the manager’s uncertainty over his best line-up.

In total, Southampton have made 64 changes to their Premier League line-up so far this season - the second most of any team in the competition. “Making four, five or six changes every game?” Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier told Sky Sports recently. “You do not get continuity and you do not get partnerships within the team. It really frustrates me.”

One suspects some of the players feel the same way. Sofiane Boufal’s celebration against West Brom suggested as much. As for Mario Lemina, he impressed early in the season but has been among the substitutes in seven of the last 10 games. At Watford, he and Boufal were on the bench alongside Manolo Gabbiadini - the club’s three all-time record signings.

That the money has not been spent as well as it was before seems clear. But the recent arrivals are not the only problem. In fact, it is the poor form of those players whom the club had come to rely upon that has been just as damaging. “Something is not right there,” former Liverpool and England captain Phil Thompson told Sky Sports.

“Oriol Romeu has been fantastic for Southampton but where has he been? He doesn’t look like he has been putting a shift in. Dusan Tadic has been absolutely shocking. You don’t see the defenders putting their bodies on the line. It’s easy to say they’re not playing for their manager. I don’t think they are playing for themselves. Their attitude has been shocking.”

For some, the dip is inexplicable. Cedric Soares did not make a single error leading to a shot in either of the past two campaigns. This season he has already made four. For others, the mistakes could have been anticipated. Forster has made two clear errors leading to goals but he is one of only two goalkeepers to do so in each of the previous two seasons too.

Indeed, Forster would seem to sum up the aforementioned issue identified by Jenkins. This is the cycle of things. He was handed a lucrative new five-year contract in the summer just one year after penning the previous deal. Cedric, Tadic, Steven Davis and James Ward-Prowse were among those to sign at that time too. Romeu got his new contract in January.

It is not just about Virgil van Dijk and the players who are sold. Sometimes it is also about the ones who are left behind. The ones who already have an eye elsewhere in the hope of joining the exodus. The ones who are now content with their lot and lack the appetite that is needed to reenergise this team. These are the hallmarks of decline.

Southampton supporters had hoped that the poor run of form under Claude Puel had been a hangover from their League Cup final trip to Wembley. Instead, it was a clue. They have now picked up only 43 points from their last 44 Premier League games. It is relegation form. And something needs to change soon if it is a fate Southampton are to avoid.

Saints can survive without new signings

Show/hide article…

SHANE Long insists Saints can “turn things around” in the Premier League without delving into the January transfer market.

The 30-year-old striker believes that it wouldn’t be a “bad thing” if Saints do bring in new faces but reckons the quality is already there to give Mauricio Pellegrino’s men a fighting chance.

Struggling Saints, who are a point outside the relegation zone, have planned to invest some of the £75m brought in by the sale of Virgil van Dijk but missed out on Arsenal’s Theo Walcott, who has agreed a £20m move to Everton.

“I’m sure the club are doing all they can to get new faces in but I fully believe in the squad that’s here. We’ve got enough talent in the team,” Long said.

“The results aren’t going the right way but if we keep approaching it the way we are I’m sure it’ll turn around.”

He added: “Obviously if the club want to bring in a few players to help us out then that’s not a bad thing but the ability is here to turn things around.

“We’ve got a lot of good players. We might be light in one or two positions and I’m sure the manager would like to strengthen that up a bit. It’s how it goes in football; I don’t think a whole change in players would turn things around.”

Ahead of welcoming Tottenham to St Mary’s on Sunday, Long hopes that Saints can change their ailing fortunes for under pressure boss Pellegrino.

He said: “I hope we can turn it around for him because it’s a good club with good players and we deserve to be higher up the table, and he deserves that as well.”

“Pressure is going to come on with the position we are in in the table, but every player in the squad can share that pressure. We’re not getting the results we deserve but we need to turn these draws into wins and kick on.

“Everyone will look to the manager for that but the players have to take the responsibility as well.”

The Republic of Ireland international says that Saints are pulling together as they look to end a torrid ten-game league winless run and pull away from the relegation zone.

“We all get on well in the dressing room and we’re all confident in each other. The one thing we’re trying to make sure of is nobody is pointing fingers and it hasn’t happened yet,” he said.

“When you get into these situations, I’ve been there before, when people start points fingers saying ‘he’s not doing this and he’s not doing this’ it gets on top of a team as a whole. But it’s not happening here, we fully believe in each other and we’re taking losses as a team.”

Long ended a 1,320-minute goal drought against Crystal Palace at St Mary’s at the beginning of this month.

Now he’s lifted that weight off his shoulders, he’s feeling more confident in front of goal.

“I know players try and gloss over the fact but I do; just in front of goal I feel more confidence striking the ball and I’m now not thinking about ‘I better score here’ rather than just doing what comes naturally,” he said.

“I’ve been in the game a long time and it’s hard to not let it get on your shoulders – I was thinking about it just too much when a chance came my way.

“But I feel like I’m doing well and doing a good job for the team and more chances will come my way and I’m willing to miss a few and get on with it because I know the goals will come.”

Long’s incredible work-rate is a huge asset for Saints. He played a big part in both goals in the 2-2 draw at Watford last time out and always gives 100 per cent to the team, chasing countless lost causes.

He said: “Well I think that anyone who is at the game or anyone at the club that views it knows what I do for the team.

“Even at the weekend I had a hand in the two goals against Watford and I’m still getting abuse from fans on Twitter for not scoring.

“Everybody knows themselves how they’ve done in a game and if I’m happy with how I’ve done that’s good enough for me.”

Southampton hold further talks with Guido Carrillo over £15m move

Show/hide article…

Southampton have held further talks over a proposed £15million deal for Monaco forward Guido Carrillo.

The Argentine has been offered to a number of Premier League clubs, including Crystal Palace, but is keen on joining up with compatriot Mauricio Pellegrino.

Pellegrino’s side find themselves one place above the relegation zone, and need to add to their squad in order to ensure survival.

The Saints manager has worked with his compatriot Carrillo before, coaching him at Estudiantes during the early stages of his career.

Carrillo’s form at the club caught the eyes of bigger teams and soon earned a move to the continent with renowned talent spotters Monaco.

The forward is now in his third season with the principality club, playing second fiddle to Colombian superstar Radamel Falcao.

The 26-year-old has scored five goals in 22 games this season.

Inside Track: Tottenham

Show/hide article…

5th in the league at the moment and unbeaten in six, has this season been a successful one for Spurs so far?

Yes. Spurs are not playing at home this year, so it was unrealistic to expect an improvement on last season’s second-place finish, even if they had one eye on the title in August.

They’ve already exceeded expectations in the Champions League by finishing the group stage with more points than any other club, and in the league they have more or less maintained last season’s level (in spite of Wembley) so far. As usual, Mauricio Pochettino’s team has found an extra gear since the start of the December, so they will not be worried to be in fifth at the moment.

However, if the season finished today, they would be disappointed to miss out on the Champions League and a trophy again. They’re the aims.

Spurs beat Southampton 5-2 on Boxing Day at Wembley, will Saints find it equally tough at St Mary’s and how have Spurs been setting up in terms of style away from home?

The clubs are on opposing trajectories and it will be really difficult again for Saints, particularly if Spurs score an early goal. Just as on Boxing Day, Harry Kane has a milestone in his sights – he needs two goals to join the Premier League’s “100 club” – and Son Heung-Min is in the form of his life. Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen also look menacing and if Saints find a way to stop one or two of them, the chances are that the others will be decisive.

Spurs tend to set-up in the same way in every game – at the moment in a 4-2-3-1 with a holding midfielder and advanced full-backs. They tend to find it easier against clubs outside the top six away from home, when the hosts feel obliged to attack in front of their own fans, leaving space for Spurs to pick them off.

How do you see the game going?

Southampton seem a little low on confidence and if Spurs score an early goal or two, it could easily finish with an even bigger deficit than Boxing Day, particularly as Spurs have improved defensively and stopped conceding from corners since then. Kane is so prolific, it is genuinely hard to imagine him not getting the brace he needs to reach 100 Premier League goals.

Worse teams than Southampton have taken points off Spurs this season, however, and Saints seem to have raised their game against the top six. If they stay organised defensively, frustrate Spurs and press their defenders, they are good enough to draw or win.

Shane Long exclusive: Southampton players must not point fingers

Show/hide article…

Shane Long says Southampton players must stick together and not point fingers at each other if they are to avoid relegation.

Long’s Saints are 17th in the Premier League, and having won just one of their last 14 games in the top flight, host Tottenham on Super Sunday, live on Sky Sports Premier League at 4pm.

Irishman Long says he has noticed Saints dropping off after taking the lead in recent games, and having experienced relegation battles with Reading, West Brom and Hull, insists sticking together will give them a huge advantage.

He told Sky Sports News: "I think the main thing is sticking together and not pointing the finger, blaming people. We’re all in this together, this time round I think we’ve got a much stronger squad from my previous experiences of relegation battles.

“We’ve just got to believe in ourselves to get out of that trouble. I think at the moment we are going ahead in games and then dropping off because that confidence is so low, soaking up pressure, and teams are just too good at this level and punish you.”

Long, 30, ended a 325-day goal drought earlier this month in Southampton’s 2-1 defeat by Crystal Palace at St Mary’s, and admits he found the 1,320-minute run without hitting the net tough.

“It was tough. I’ve been in the game a long time, and I knew it was just a matter of it coming sooner rather than later, but I suppose when it drags on for so long it gets on top of you a bit more, and that confidence goes out of you for a bit,” he said.

"I think any player would struggle, but if I broke it down, the amount of starts I’ve had and the time I’d had on the pitch, I wasn’t getting that regular football, and I think I needed that to get my confidence back up, and I knew the goals would come.

“I was still doing the same thing. In training all my shots were going in! And then in the game they’d miss by inches! I’m just glad to see it go in.”

Saints received £75m for the sale of defender Virgil van Dijk earlier in January after months of speculation linking the Dutchman to Liverpool.

Long says Van Dijk’s performances and effort did not drop this season, and insists the incessant talk of an exit did not negatively impact the squad.

He said: "Not really. Obviously when he was here there was a lot of talk about whether he was going to stay or go, and I’ve been in football long enough, that’s part of the game. Teams want to get your best players, and we wish him all the best on his move.

“He’s started well up there, but it’s still business as usual here. Virgil is very professional. He trained hard and he played hard. He brought his bit to the team. I don’t think it was negative.”
