Saints forced into January rethink

Show/hide article…

SAINTS must now turn their attentions to alternative January transfer buys as number one target Theo Walcott closes in on a move to Everton.

Merseyside-based media yesterday reported that Walcott was on the way to the Toffees for a medical ahead of a switch from Arsenal in a deal worth more than £20m.

Having originally been confident of securing the services of the attacker, who left St Mary’s for the Gunners 12 years ago, this news all but ends Saints’ pursuit of the England international.

Now, Saints must quickly forget the Walcott chase and look to other players in the January transfer market as they look for reinforcements to aid them in their relegation scrap.

Saints have been busy working on deals but such is the unpredictability of the January window they are yet to complete any transfers.

After the 2-2 at Watford on Saturday, boss Mauricio Pellegrino said that “we are working on a couple of targets who will hopefully arrive next week”.

But all has been quiet so far this week, although Saints have already stated that they will look to reinvest some of the £75m they received from Liverpool for Virgil van Dijk.

Pellegrino was coy on another target Guido Carrillo recently, but the Monaco striker seems to fit the mould of previous Saints signings and has worked under the 46-year-old boss before.

The 26-year-old has scored five times in 22 appearances this season and is not a regular feature in Monaco’s attack, having started just twice in Ligue 1 all season.

However, his arrival at Saints would come as no surprise considering Pellegrino’s relationship with the frontman.

He had his most prolific season under Pellegrino at Argentinian outfit Estudiantes, netting 13 goals in 37 games in 2013/14.

Carrillo came through the youth ranks at Estudiantes, eventually making his debut in 2011.

He went onto attract interest from Inter Milan, Benfica and Olympiakos, before switching to Monaco in a 8.8m Euro deal in 2015.

Some reports state, a move worth around £15m could be struck.

Saints are desperate for new recruits following ten straight games without a Premier League victory.

With top-scorer Charlie Austin sidelined long-term and with Shane Long and Manolo Gabbiadini misfiring, Saints want attackers to galvanise their season.

Long has scored once this term, while Gabbiadini has netted three times.

Each Premier League club’s top player this season revealed

Show/hide article…

Which player has shone brightest at your club in the Premier League this season? We’ve used the Sky Sports Power Rankings to find out…

The Power Rankings methodology reflects a player’s performance by awarding points to players for 32 different stats.

Below, we present your club’s top points scorer in the accumulative season rankings. Do you agree with our stats-based winners? Tweet us @SkyFootball and get involved…

Alexis Sanchez looks set to leave Arsenal this month before his contract expires in the summer, and the stats suggest he has once again been the Gunners’ standout player - despite failing to hit last season’s form to date.

The Chile international has scored seven league goals and claimed three assists, created 46 chances and won a club-high 118 duels - versatility that has attracted interest from both Manchester clubs and Chelsea.

Josh King enjoyed a sensational 2016/17 at Bournemouth with 16 goals - but he has only managed two so far this term, and only taken nine shots on target.

Despite his dip in form in front of goal, the Norwegian is currently the top-ranked player at the Vitality Stadium - boosted by his three assists and club-high totals of 40 completed dribbles and 23 chances created.

Pascal Gross was almost certainly last summer’s bargain signing, joining the Seagulls for just £2.55m from FC Ingolstadt 04.

In his first season on England’s south coast, Gross has scored four goals, recorded five assists, created 24 chances and completed 45 crosses.

James Tarkowski has excelled at Burnley this season and commanded the back line following Michael Keane’s big-money move to Everton in the summer.

Burnley sit seventh in the Premier League table, despite only scoring 19 goals. For context, only three clubs have scored fewer in the Premier League: Swansea, Brighton and West Brom.

Conversely, only three clubs have conceded fewer goals than Burnley this term: Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea - stats that highlight Tarkowski’s impact on the Clarets’ incredible run.

The centre-back has won a remarkable 158 duels and 105 aerials, made 152 clearances, 33 tackles, 33 blocks and 32 interceptions.

Chelsea wing-back Marcos Alonso has scored six goals - two from outside the box - that’s merely four shy of misfiring £70m summer signing Alvaro Morata.

The Spaniard’s stats reveal an effective balance of attacking and defensive qualities - taking 18 shots on target, creating 23 chances, but also making 39 tackles, 50 clearances, winning 45 aerials and 117 duels.

Just 255 Power Ranking points divide the Eagles’ top two players this term, with Andros Townsend edging ahead of Wilfried Zaha - boosted by having played 300 additional minutes.

Despite only scoring the once, Townsend has recorded four assists and taken 1,115 touches, creating 28 chances and firing a club-high 30 successful crosses.

Rooney scored on his second league debut for Everton in August and fired an outrageous goal from the half-way line to cap a hat-trick against West Ham in November.

The former England skipper has now scored 10 goals for the Toffees - seven more than any other player - and has recorded club-high totals for shots on target (14) and chances created (20) - stats that also suggest a lack of firepower at the club.

Aaron Mooy has pulled ahead of centre-back Christopher Schindler as Huddersfield’s top player in recent weeks after a string of heavy defeats.

The Australia international has made a big impact since joining the Terriers for £10m from Manchester City last summer, scoring four goals, recording two assists, creating 24 chances, making 1,007 successful passes, 68 tackles and 1,697 touches.

Riyad Mahrez has rekindled his title-winning form of two years ago in recent months and has seven goals - three from outside the box - and seven assists so far this season.

The winger has taken more shots on target than any player at the club with 20 and he has club-high totals for dribbles completed (51) and successful crosses (16).

Mohamed Salah has hit the ground running at Anfield with 18 goals and six assists to date, catapulting him to the heady heights of runner-up in the overall Sky Sports Power Rankings’ season chart.

Like Mahrez, Salah has scored three from range and has club-high totals for shots on target (44), chances created (35) and dribbles completed (55).

In term of Power Ranking points, there is no competition at Anfield: Salah’s closest competitor, Roberto Firmino, has 27,000 fewer points.

Kevin De Bruyne has been in scintillated form this season, helping City to claim 18 successive wins and complete an undefeated run of 22 games before the 4-3 defeat at Anfield on Sunday.

The Belgium international has topped the overall Sky Sports Power Rankings season chart for the majority of this season - but a recent dip in form has seen his lead over Salah slashed to just nine Power Ranking points.

De Bruyne has six goals - four from outside the box - and nine assists to date, having taken a staggering 2,194 touches, and recording club-high totals for chances created (44) and successful crosses (40).

David de Gea has shone once again this season, staking his claim as the world’s No 1 goalkeeper, with 13 clean sheets, 77 saves and conceding a league-low 16 goals.

His position as United’s top player this season may have been threatened by Paul Pogba, had the France international not missed seven league games through a hamstring injury and another three due to suspension.

Perhaps surprisingly, Joselu narrowly emerges as the top player at Newcastle, with four goals and an assist - 898 points ahead of midfielder Mikel Merino.

The Spaniard’s conversion rate is exceptionally high, having only mustered 16 shots on target, and he has club-high totals for duels won (153) and aerials won (119).

Southampton have struggled to score goals again this season as Mauricio Pellegrino battles to keep his job at St Mary’s, but Oriol Romeo has once again reigned supreme in the centre of the pitch.

The midfielder has recorded club-high totals across a raft of defensive stats, including successful passes (1,039), touches (1,541), tackles (62), aerials won (53), interceptions (38) and duels won (140).

Unsurprisingly, Xherdan Shaqiri has been Stoke’s top player during a sticky run of results that saw Mark Hughes sacked after four and a half years at the club.

Shaqiri is the club’s joint-top scorer with Eric Maxim Choup-Moting on four goals and has club-high totals with five assists, 19 shots on target and 23 chances created.

Despite Swansea’s below-par form, Jordan Ayew has impressed with four goals and two assists. The Ghana international has made 43 tackles - only Kyle Naughton has made more.

Ayew’s defensive qualities are further affirmed with a club-high 163 duels won, while no player at the club has completed more than his 39 completed dribbles.

Harry Kane occupies No 3 spot in the overall Sky Sports Power Rankings season chart - part of a runaway trio including De Bruyne and Salah.

The England striker has also narrowed the gap at the top of the chart with a recent flourish in form, hitting two against Everton on Saturday to become the Premier League’s top scorer with 20 to date.

Abdoulaye Doucoure has overtaken team-mate Richarlison in the Sky Sports Power Rankings season chart in recent weeks.

The versatile midfielder has hit seven goals so far and has made more successful passes (1,184), touches (1,748) and interceptions (35) than any other player at the club.

While the spotlight shines on West Brom captain Jonny Evans amid a possible big-club move, summer loan arrival Ahmed Hegazi has shone brightest in the stats.

Hegazi has completed a staggering 170 clearances, while also making 21 blocks and winning 111 duels - prompting the Baggies to sign the Egyptian on a permanent basis this month.

Manuel Lanzini will be looking over his shoulder as team-mate Marko Arnautovic soars up the Power Rankings chart after a run of superior form, but Lanzini maintains a slender 2,000-point lead over the Austrian and Pedro Obiang.

Lanzini has conjured five assists this season and scored three goals, in addition to a making a club-high 723 successful passes and completing 44 dribbles.

How the Premier League table would look based on every club’s home form only

Show/hide article…

Manchester City finally lost their first league game of the season on Sunday, falling to defeat at Liverpool’s home Anfield.

Pep Guardiola’s side are now 12 points clear of Manchester United in the race for the Premier League title, after 23 matches.

While they have suffered a defeat in 2017-18, City remain unbeaten at the Etihad Stadium - and have in fact won all but one of their 11 home matches.

But where does this rank them among all 20 Premier League sides based only upon home results this season?

VAR: Sportsmail experts on whether it’s the future or a fad

Show/hide article…

Leicester City star Kelechi Iheanacho made English football history on Tuesday night after becoming the first player to have a goal awarded by a Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

Iheanacho’s goal against Fleetwood Town in the FA Cup was originally ruled out for offside, but referee Jonathan Moss consulted with VAR and eventually overturned the decision.

While the Foxes will be delighted to have been given a goal on the back of a review, video technology has split opinion after its use in Brighton vs Crystal Palace in the FA Cup and Chelsea vs Arsenal in the Carabao Cup.

Following the landmark moment for VAR, Sportsmail reporters have their say on if, and how, the system is actually improving our game and what, if anything, needs to change.

What do you think of VAR so far?

At the King Power it worked well. The incidents that seemed close were dealt with swiftly by Jon Moss, who made clear by placing his hand to his ear that there was dialogue from the video assistant referee watching on the screen in London.

Then the big moment came with Kelechi Iheanacho’s goal. The pause of 67 seconds didn’t seem long, the crowed realised what was happening so a build up of noise began, and when Moss signalled there was the cheer that customarily greets a goal. Yes, it was not spontaneous, but the main point is that the correct decision was reached.

What can be done to improve it?

It does seem wrong that supporters in the stadium, as well as managers, aren’t given the privilege of seeing how the decision was reached. Uwe Rosler originally came in and questioned whether the VAR had guessed.

Those of us in the press box and people watching at home were given a slow-motion, pause-frame replay complete with colour-coded lines as absolute proof. Admittedly, showing debatable calls on the big screens might cause fractious scenes in the stands but on decisions of fact those at the ground should be kept in the loop.

Rosler cautioned that in Germany, VAR is perceived negatively and it is not difficult to imagine an alternative version of events to prompt such a view. Consider had Iheanacho seen his shot saved, causing a delay and Moss to blow his whistle with the flag raised, only for the Leicester striker to put in the rebound. What then? No goal. Yet we cannot allow games to progress indefinitely. So there are issues still to be worked out as the tech introduction continues.

We also need to guard against too many pauses as the on field referee gets word from the VAR. But in Leicester, Moss got the balance right.

What do you think of VAR so far?

It’s working extremely well. It’s already made contributions to making sure that we get fair results to games. Given that it’s in a trial period, I think the referees have handled it very efficiently. Those who champion the continuation of a system where matches are decided by the human errors of officials are never going to be happy with it but those who want to see injustice cut of the game a little more should be satisfied.

What can be done to improve it?

It’s working well as it is. Maybe the decisions could be made more quickly but the delays to the games have been insignificant and the decision-making process will speed up the longer VAR is in place.

What do you think of VAR so far?

Good. It does help with the fairness of the game. Iheanacho’s goal is an obvious example so broadly speaking it’s a good thing, like goal-line technology.

Rule-makers must keep in mind football is a contact sport with plenty of subjective laws - is a handball “intentional” or not - the aim must be to rid matches of clear injustices, not go on a fool’s errand of trying to every decision correct. So far, so good.

What can be done to improve it?

I’m actually anti-improvement if that makes sense! Improvements usually mean more delays on the pitch; three reviews per team, audience participation in decisions, that just serves to turn football into cricket, tennis or the NFL. As long as clear big decisions are corrected with a simple whisper into the ref’s ear, that’ll do.

What do you think of VAR so far?

It hasn’t all gone smoothly but overall it’s done its job, as shown by Kelechi Iheanacho’s goal. Referees chief Mike Riley will be patting himself on the back this morning, though I think VAR is far from the finished product.

What can be done to improve it?

Indications on the big screen that tell journalists and supporters alike when a decision is being reviewed by the video referee - that should not be too difficult. Referees have to stop play immediately if they want an incident reviewed too - don’t continue because then anything can happen while you wait to go back to the original contentious incident.

What do you think of VAR so far?

It’s not perfect. The major issue was the delay in deciding on the potential Fabregas/Welbeck penalty decision at the end of the Chelsea-Arsenal League Cup semi. Those in the ground had no idea what was going on; those watching on TV were only slightly better informed.

What can be done to improve it?

More communication please. The stadium PA and TV producer needs to be able to hear the ref feed, so they can inform the crowd and TV audience exactly what id happening. Or, just copy rugby, and mic up the refs. But the principal is good, as last night demonstrated.

What do you think of VAR so far?

It’s been free of mistakes so far and that can only be a good thing. Feels like there could be a greater deal of anticipation built into it - certainly like in tennis and to a lesser degree cricket - but VAR’s had a decent first fortnight. I saw the Kelechi Iheanacho goal on the TV and that seems to be the best medium to interact with VAR at the moment, which probably needs to be fixed.

What can be done to improve it?

Big screens inside stadiums. The crowd not being able to see the decision being made is all kinds of wrong.

What do you think of VAR so far?

It’s been a long time coming. I agree that referees should be allowed to control the game and that mistakes every now and then are something we can live with. But when it comes to the big calls, there is no reason not to use technology to make sure we get it right.

What can be done to improve it?

It’s all a bit discreet at the moment, and you could see that as a benefit as it maintains the flow of the game. I do think the crowd tend to be left in the dark as a consequence, and communication levels could improve – even if it’s just a little TV screen popping up on the scoreboard when VAR is in use.

What do you think of VAR so far?

I don’t like it at all. I was in the crowd for the Chelsea vs Arsenal League Cup semi-final and the confusion was ridiculous. Martin Atkinson handled it very badly. Chelsea were awarded a corner late on, the game was stopped for two minutes to decide on a pretty nothing incident in the penalty area. No-one had a clue what was going on, whether the technology was being used or why. There was a similar incident in the first half. Tennis and cricket are sports full of natural stops. Football lives on the natural flow of the game, the excitement when your team is attacking.

What can be done to improve it?

If it’s here to stay, the crowd has to know what’s going on. Not all grounds have big screens visible to everyone, but putting it on those that do would be a start.

Dusan Tadic v Eric Dier: The key battle when Southampton face Tottenham

Show/hide article…

Will Dusan Tadic or Eric Dier come out on top when Southampton host Spurs on Sunday? We check the stats…

Tottenham travel to Southampton for their Sky Live clash on Sunday aiming to extend their excellent recent run against the Saints, having won their last three Premier League meetings and nine of their previous 11.

Key to Southampton’s hopes of a positive result could be the form of playmaker Dusan Tadic, who set up both of his team’s goals in their only Premier League win against Spurs since 2005 - a 2-1 success at White Hart Lane in May 2016.

Goals have been sparse for Mauricio Pellegrino’s side this season, having scored just 23 in 23 Premier League games and one of the reasons could be a downturn in Tadic’s creativity. The 29-year-old Serbian has only four assists in his last 32 Premier League appearances having had 23 in his first 87.

However, despite this recent form, Tadic still easily leads the way for Southampton in assists and chances created for the club since his Premier League debut in Aug 2014, underlining his importance to the club going forward.

In fact, only Gylfi Sigurdsson has more assists from players from clubs outside ‘The Big 6’ since the start of 2014/15.

As well as creating chances, Tadic has also been at the forefront of goal attempts for Southampton this season, with only Nathan Redmond having more efforts and Charlie Austin having more attempts on target. His last goal actually came as a sub in the Saints’ 5-2 defeat against Tottenham at Wembley on Boxing Day.

The responsibility to negate Tadic’s creativity could fall to Eric Dier, a mainstay of the Tottenham team, whether in defence or midfield.

Dier, who celebrated his 24th birthday this week, has been one of the first names on Mauricio Pochettino’s team sheet, with only Christian Eriksen and Hugo Lloris playing more Premier League games for Tottenham since the Argentinean’s appointment in May 2014.

He is primarily in the team for his defensive capabilities and he has performed well for Spurs this season, with only Jan Vertonghen, who has played 112 minutes more, making more interceptions and tackles.

Dier has also got across the pitch impressively this season, with only Eriksen and Dele Alli covering a greater distance.

Dier has won on five of his seven Premier League appearances against Southampton and has not won more against any other club.

If the England international can help nullify the attacking threat of Tadic at St Mary’s on Sunday, it is a run he and his team-mates will hope will continue.

Lymington Town or Netley Central await young Saints in Senior Cup semis

Show/hide article…

NETLEY Central Sports and Lymington Town have added incentive to win their delayed Southampton Senior Cup quarter-final.

Awaiting the victors in the last four is a plum tie against Southampton’s Under-23s.

Radhi Jaidi’s Saints progressed to the semi-finals with a 3-0 win away to a young Winchester City side last week, having beaten BTC Southampton (6-0) and QK Southampton (12-0) along the way.

No dates have yet been fixed for the semis with three quarter-finals still to be played.

Along with the Lymington v Netley tie, the Sholing v Hamble Club and Team Solent v Blackfield & Langley games also succumbed to bad weather this week.

Netley Central are the lowest ranked side left in the competition. They sit second in the Hampshire Premier League Division One, level on points with leaders South Wonston Swifts with five games in hand.

All the other remaining non-League sides ply their trade in the Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division.

Sholing, the cup holders, beat Team Solent 3-1 at St Mary’s last May.

Southampton Senior Cup semi-final draw: Sholing or Hamble Club v Team Solent or Blackfield & Langley, Saints v Lymington Town or Netley Central Sports.
