WHAT’S AT STAKE?
The opening match of a new campaign always come with added excitement, but there will also be an extra incentive to impress under new boss Mauricio Pellegrino.
With pre-season now behind them, every Saints player will be looking to show the Argentine what they can do and why they are deserving of a starting berth in his side.
And with three of the first four league games to be played at St Mary’s, Pellegrino will be keen to utilise the home advantage and make a quick start to his maiden Premier League campaign.
TEAM NEWS
Southampton: New signing Mario Lemina could feature on the opening weekend, having arrived in a good physical state. Cédric, who arrived late in pre-season due his Confederations Cup involvement, will continue to be monitored and Virgil van Dijk will not be available for the match.
Swansea City: Swansea will be without Nathan Dyer (Achilles tendon rupture), Fernando Llorente (fractured arm) and Jefferson Montero (muscle fibre) for the visit to St Mary’s, whilst Paul Clement has also said he will leave Gylfi Sigurdsson out of his opening squad.

Swansea pipped a number of clubs to the signing of striker Tammy Abraham on a season-long loan this summer. The Chelsea youngster, who only has two Premier League games to his name, took the Championship by storm last season by netting 23 goals for Bristol City. Many will be interested to see how the 19-year-old fares in the top flight this season.
