Southampton Cup: Day Five

Show/hide article…

A glorious summer day set the perfect scene for the first batch of knockout games in the Southampton Cup.

Southampton Under-12s suffered an unfortunate defeat in their semi-final against FC Nordsjaellend.

The young Saints side fell 2-0 behind before a late penalty threatened the chance of a comeback. But despite piling men forward and building pressure, the final whistle blew just before a spirited display could grab them a late equaliser.

In the other semi-final AFC Bournemouth progressed on penalties after their tight game against Mansfield Town.

Chelsea were defeated in the Under-14s semi-final, as Deportivo secured a narrow 1-0 victory over the West London side.

Despite a tight game and a number of late chances for Chelsea, the Spanish side held on to book their place in tomorrow’s final.

Elsewhere, Porto and Dinamo Zagreb played out the other semi-final in a truly entertaining fashion.

After a tight opening, Porto took the lead on 29 minutes from the penalty spot to earn a slender lead heading into the second period.

Shortly after the break, however, Zagreb equalised with a spectacular tactical free-kick to set up a nervy finish.

Despite both teams having chances late into the game, the match was eventually decided on penalties where Porto prevailed after a 4-3 win.

Hythe & Dibden progressed to the final of the Premier tournament after their destructive 5-0 victory over Oakwood.

Hythe, who were impressive in front of goal during their comfortable win, will now face Kelowna in the final.

The Canadian side saw off Saints Kicks with two goals either side of half time to book their place in the final.

Saints announce Utilita partnership

Show/hide article…

The Hampshire-based company has been a major success story, growing rapidly in a short period of time to become the country’s leading provider of smart pay-as-you-go energy.

In the past two years alone, Utilita has more than doubled its customer base – which now stands at 550,000 – and has trebled its staff numbers since April 2016 to 1,500, with nearly half based at their headquarters in Eastleigh.

Last month, Utilita reached a million supply points across the UK and was also the winner of the Best Growth Award at the South Coast Business Awards.

The two-year agreement will see Saints and Utilita work closely together to benefit the club’s fans and the company’s customers and staff, as well as the wider community.

Jem Maidment, Head of Marketing & Communications at Utilita, said: "We are now a rising national brand – but our roots are very much in Hampshire.

“We believe in the power of football and the positive effect it has on communities. Over the past two years we have considerably grown our involvement in the national game with great success, showcasing our brand and our fantastic products to football fans across Britain.

“So it is a huge thrill for us to now partner with Southampton, especially at such an exciting time for the club with a new manager, as they build on their successes of recent seasons. We look forward to working on a number of initiatives with the club across Hampshire, with more announcements to come later in the season.”

Southampton Football Club’s Commercial Director, David Thomas, said: “We are extremely pleased to welcome Utilita on board as an Official Partner and we look forward to working closely with them on some exciting projects in the coming seasons.

“Like us, they are a fine example of a Hampshire success story and are a community-focused organisation. We believe the values they share with us will make this a partnership that can benefit the club, our fans, Utilita and also the wider area.”

Saints fans who switch to Utilita will receive exclusive offers throughout the 2017/18 season – as well as a smart meter at no extra cost, no standing charge and exclusive access to festival and music tickets through its partnership with the world’s leading entertainment promoter, Live Nation.

Free ice cream for fans!

Show/hide article…

Saints’ Main Club Sponsor is sending five vans to St Mary’s tomorrow to dish out cones to fans, as a celebration of the start of the new season.

They will be outside the stadium, in five different positions, from 1pm until 3pm, so make sure you don’t miss out on yours.

The generous offer is part of Virgin Media’s commitment to be more than a shirt sponsor and to make the matchday experience even more enjoyable for supporters.

The giveaway forms just part of a wide variety of entertainment and activities taking place ahead of the clash with Swansea City.

Back by popular demand again this season is the Saints Brass band, who will be playing outside of the stadium in the lead-up to the game, while there will also be a local showcase musician performing.

There are loads of activities on offer for youngsters attending the game too, with a number of face painters positioned outside the stadium, as well as some special wandering entertainment acts to keep an eye out for, while Saints Foundation will also be hosting challenges for people to take part in with their inflatable goal.

There will be additional kids’ activities taking place within our family zones, including a design your own superhero challenge, on the back of our extremely popular Made For Heroes kit launch this summer.

On top of all that, make sure to keep an eye out for the 14 Big Issue vendors who will be selling the special Saints edition of the magazine, which doubles as our matchday programme.

The unique partnership between the organisations has been launched to help provide opportunities for the people who sell the magazine in Hampshire, and, with half the cover price of each copy sold going to the vendors, it is a great chance to be a part of the project.

Danny Rose: What happens next for players who speak out about their ambitions?

Show/hide article…

Danny Rose is the name on Premier League supporters’ lips today, with his comments suggesting he feels undervalued sparking concern over his future at Tottenham Hotspur.

In an exclusive interview with The Sun, the Spurs full-back candidly said: "If I get to levels I reached last season — and this goes out to everybody — I will make sure I get what I am worth. I don’t know how much longer I might have at this level.

“I’m not going to be stupid enough not to try and get the most out of it — medals, trophies and salary.”

While Rose hasn’t criticised Tottenham or stated he wants to leave and has subsequently apologised, the club will have been alerted by his want to speak publicly about his ambitions.

So, inspired by his candour, talkSPORT.com has taken a look at what happened next for players who openly hinted at wanting more from their career.

Scroll through the gallery above to see who features.

Opposition View: Swansea City

Show/hide article…

The Welsh side are the visitors for the opening game of the 2017/18 Premier League season, and Clement, who has brought in Tammy Abraham, Roque Mesa and Erwin Mulder this summer, is in an optimistic mood ahead of the game.

“I think we are stronger as a squad than we were last season,” said the Swans boss, .

“We haven’t had many players going out and we have integrated three new signings.”

Clement will, however, be without injured trio Fernando Llorente, Ki Sung-Young and Nathan Dyer for the match, as well as Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Whatever the line-ups, the Swans boss is expecting a good contest between the sides.

“Any game away from home in the Premier League is hard and Southampton are a good side,” he said.

“They had a good league finish last season. They play a good style of football and they have good players.

“I respect them as a club because they have a tradition of developing players, and we are expecting a difficult test.”
