Fleming: We’ve prepared well

Show/hide article…

The Saints youngsters host Leicester City at Staplewood and Fleming feels that their rigorous pre-season preparation will stand them in good stead.

“It’s obviously what you build up for throughout pre-season and play all those games for,” started the Under-18s manager.

“We had a good pre-season and played some really good games against strong opposition, but it’s never quite the same – it’ll be good to get going in the league programme again.”

“We’ve played against a number of under-19 teams and also RB Leipzig and Inter Milan, where we got a good draw, so it’s been good preparation.”

Southampton will one against compete in the Under-18 Premier League competition, meaning they will pit their wits against a number of familiar foes.

And having faced Leicester three times last term, Fleming is confident his side will know what kind of challenge awaits them.

“it’s always a difficult game,” he continued.

“Leicester tend to be quite a strong and physical team with high energy, so it is always a good challenge playing against them.

“I’ve seen bits of them this pre-season and they look very similar so I am sure it will be a good test for our boys.”

Premier League predictions: Do these Radio 1 and 1Xtra DJs know their football?

Show/hide article…

The BBC football pundits have had their say about what will happen this season - but what about the people who REALLY know what they are talking about?

BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra DJs Charlie Sloth, Adele Roberts, Trevor Nelson, Nick Bright and Chris Stark have all picked who they think will end up as champions, and also have their own mini-league in the BBC’s Premier League Predictor game.

Disagree? You can take them on yourself here, and enter a mini-league with your mates too by playing the the new-look BBC Sport Predictor game.

A lot of people are going to think I am biased because I am a massive Liverpool fan, but there’s actually method and thought that has gone into my top four.

I just feel like the squad is the strongest it has ever been and I think Jurgen Klopp has a real understanding of what’s about to happen this season and how he wants his team to play - he has finally got his two men out wide who can rip teams to pieces when they sit back.

As much as I would love the Premier League trophy to be adorned in the ribbons of Liverpool red and make its way to Merseyside at the end of this season, I think it might end up in the blue of Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola has built a strong side - devastating in attack and much stronger this year in defence which means they will be very hard to beat.

With a Champions League campaign to cope with too, I cannot see how Chelsea or Tottenham Hotspur can beat them over a season.

I think Spurs will also find it tough to play at Wembley for their home games this year. They’ll miss the atmosphere, charm and history of White Hart Lane and it’ll take them a while to adjust.

As a Chelsea fan I think we’ll be singing ‘champions of England’ for only a few months more.

Antonio Conte has been a miracle worker up to now but not even he can salvage the mess our pre-season has been - Diego Costa’s attitude has cost us and a ball hasn’t even been kicked yet.

It is not all doom and gloom, though. I still think that we are so organised and strong, that a top-four finish beckons again

Chelsea will take the second spot, followed by Arsenal (I hope!), as long as Alexandre Lacazette hits the ground running and Alexis Sanchez stays.

Completing the top four for me are Tottenham. Although they haven’t been massively active during the transfer window, Harry Kane is prolific in front of goal and they have a great defence too.

I think that Manchester City will be champions - they’ve strengthened well over the summer and it’s Pep Guardiola’s second season in charge now so he’ll be looking to improve on last year.

Most people expect Manchester City to win the title this season but for no other reason than a gut instinct, I think Jose and Manchester United could have it this year.

That said, there needs to be a rapid increase in quality.

But everyone needs to watch out for the mighty Hornets! Being a massive Watford fan I am massively excited for the season ahead - it could be a very good one for us with the right start.

It might take a while for the team to gel but energy, optimism and desire to show what they can do could make this team too much for Liverpool - I see a first win of the season for us at the weekend.

Premier League 2017/18 preview: Liverpool, Watford, Brighton and Southampton – part five

Show/hide article…

LIVERPOOL

In a nutshell

Champions League was secured on the final day for Liverpool as they finally returned to Europe’s premier competition. Damaging defeats hindered a promising start last campaign, but they still rallied to a top four finish.

Expectations

A title challenge will be desired, but a Champions League place offers its own weight in gold within the competitive climate of the Premier League. A poor FA cup showing where they were knocked out by Wolves last season will want to be put right with a serious challenge for silverware in this campaign.

Transfer business

Mohamed Salah has returned to the league looking to show added value following his ill-fated spell at Chelsea. His addition of pace and charisma in attacking midfield should fit the mould in Klopp’s Liverpool team. Dominic Solanke is a young prospect, moving from Chelsea after rejecting an offer of a new contract, and he will be determined to get more of a chance at Anfield.

Do they need to add?

They have looked to add in defence with Virgil van Dijk being courted throughout the summer, though bids for the player have been rejected.

Star players

Sadio Mane proved to be both exciting and influential after his move from Southampton last summer and should star again this campaign. Another important player is Philippe Coutinho, his future at Anfield looking very uncertain following audacious bids from Barcelona, and a reported transfer request, but he certainly offers star quality to Liverpool if he stays.

How safe is the manager?

Jurgen Klopp has got Liverpool back on track with a top four finish last season, but trophies still elude him as manager. A strong campaign, with an inspiring cup run will be no doubt be sufficient.

WATFORD

In a nutshell

A poor season saw Watford narrowly avoid relegation, finishing 17th. Walter Mazarri’s departure from Vicarage Road sees Marco Silva take charge after an impressive stint at Hull in the Premier League, although he couldn’t quite guide them away from relegation.

Expectations

Dismal results last season didn’t make for pleasant viewing as Watford produced the bare minimum to guarantee promotion. Some pleasing transfer business this summer and a new manager in charge will offer the expectation that a mid-table finish can be achieved instead of a relegation dogfight.

Transfer business

Will Hughes from Derby looks like a good buy for minimal money. He is a player who has been eye-catching in the Championship, and should provide excellent value. Andre Gray moved from Burnley in a club record deal and is an exciting prospect in attack, providing goals and a good work-rate. His arrival will provide healthy competition in attack alongside Troy Deeney, who endured a difficult campaign last time out.

Do they need to add?

The Hornets have made a number of additions in midfield and attack, but some defensive recruits would further strengthen this Watford team.

Star players

Etienne Capoue was impressive in midfield at the start of last season and was integral in getting points on the board early before a dramatic dip. He could be important again. Troy Deeney will want to return to a starring role, as he was largely ineffective last year.

How safe is the manager?

The Watford board have been quick to fire managers in the past and will hope Silva can guarantee security. He is still inexperienced in terms of management in England and if he struggles to deliver at Watford his time at the helm could be short-lived.

BRIGHTON

In a nutshell

Promotion from the Championship put Brighton into the Premier League for the first time as they finished runners-up, Newcastle pipping them to the title on the final day of last season.

Expectations

Survival will be the primary target, as they will want to ensure their climb to the summit of the elite tier of English football is not short lived.

Transfer business

Davy Propper and Jose Izgueirdo are two midfielders brought in, breaking their transfer record twice for their services. Australian international goalkeeper Mathew Ryan offers quality in goal for the Seagulls.

Do they need to add?

Their first season in the Premier League will be tough. They will need all the quality they can get to help strengthen their bid for survival, so more top additions before the window closes will be essential.

Star player

Anthony Knockaert was the Championship Player of the Year last season and will want to transfer his fine form into the Premier League to boost the Sussex club’s survival hopes.

How safe is the manager?

Chris Hughton can certainly be guaranteed plenty of time to manage Brighton to a successful season. His experience in the Premier League with Newcastle and Norwich will be critical in guiding the team to positive results and grinding out precious points at important times.

SOUTHAMPTON

In a nutshell

A League Cu final appearance and an eighth placed finish looked like a good season on paper for Southampton, however, fans’ frustration with the team’s style of play and disappointing results saw Claude Puel lose his job after one season in charge. Mauricio Pellegrino has been appointed and will hope to satisfy the supporters with a more attractive brand of football.

Expectations

A return to Europe will be the ultimate expectation this season, as will pleasing fans with better results and more eye-catching football. A better points tally will be expected as Southampton’s league position disguised the fact they only picked up 46 points.

Transfer business

Mario Lemina is the only main piece of business in midfield, however he is an ambitious buy from Juventus.

Do they need to add?

A lack of goals was a problem last season and Charlie Austin and Manolo Gabbiadini will need to step up, but a striker could be seen as a welcome addition. Keeping Virgil van Dijk could be viewed as a new signing, such is his quality.

Key player

Van Dijk is a defensive rock at the back and is certainly a star in defence for them if he somehow manages to remain at St Mary’s. Oriol Romeu had a good year last year so could be an important figure. It remains to be seen if a striker can step up and produce the goals that significantly lacked last campaign. Gabbiadini could be good for that.

How safe is the manager?

Mauricio Pellegrino should be given time to settle in on the south coast, but he still must get this Southampton to play football that is akin to a top 10 side. A further lack of progression in terms of results and lack of attacking quality could see the Southampton make a managerial change once again.

Pellegrino: We have to make the most of it

Show/hide article…

Saints host Swansea City at St Mary’s in their season opener, and the manager wants his side to make the most of their home advantage.

“Hopefully we will have a nice performance,” started Pellegrino.

“I think we are well prepared. We do not have another possibility to win our first game – this is the only one.

“We have to make the most of it and to try and win this game and do our best in front of our own fans.”

Paul Clement’s Swansea side stand in the way of Pellegrino and his first Premier League win as Saints boss.

And the Argentine is more than aware of the threat his side will face.

“I think it will be really tough,” he continued.

“Swansea are a good team. They are well balanced and try to keep the ball. They have big players, but I think we have the strength to rival them.

“I am calm because I have seen the players training in a good way. I have been pleased with what I have seen.”

Key Swansea star reveals he almost quit football this summer

Show/hide article…

Leon Britton admits he considered hanging up his boots this summer.

But the 34-year-old could not resist leading Swansea into the new campaign at Southampton .

Britton helped the Welsh side narrowly avoid Premier League relegation last season and remains a key figure for head coach Paul Clement.

“There were times when I thought about calling it a day, I’m not going to lie,” Britton said.

“But there’s no better buzz as a footballer than stepping out on the pitch on a Saturday. I don’t know what’s going to happen this season, but I still feel fit and strong.

Transfer news LIVE: Liverpool star demands exit plus Manchester United, City, Arsenal, Chelsea latest and every done deal

“When you play in big games, there’s huge pressure, but it’s enjoyable. I still feel like I can compete at this level.”

Britton will captain Swansea at St Mary’s while Gylfi Sigurdsson will sit out the game as he nears a £50million move to Everton.

Fernando Llorente is missing with an arm injury suffered on holiday, with Chelsea loan star Tammy Abraham set to start alongside Jordan Ayew in attack.

Swansea took just five points from their first 10 Premier League matches last season.

And Britton, who has made more than 450 appearances over two spells in South Wales, is determined to make a fast start this term.

“This squad is one of the best I’ve been involved in in terms of team spirit for a long, long time,” Britton added.

“I’m not saying there have been bad eggs in the past, I just feel this squad is really together.

“Hopefully this year we won’t have to worry about a slow start. We know it’s going to be tough again because the Premier League is what it is.

“It’s a challenging league and if we don’t perform, we know we’ll be in trouble and in a relegation fight. We don’t want that – we want to be able to enjoy the season.”

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino fires a warning to Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino has warned rogue captain Virgil van Dijk : No player is bigger than the team.

Liverpool target Van Dijk this week handed in a transfer request and will miss Saints’ opening day clash at home to Swansea today due to a ‘virus’.

Pellegrino said yesterday: “The problem here is that Virgil is one of the most important players. But there isn’t one player more important than the 11 players playing together.

“Virgil is an important player but the club was clear from the beginning with the player. We cannot control every situation and Virgil is part of our club because he has a contract.

“The player is clear with his position but we have to keep going because I can’t control the thinking of the player at this moment.”

Dutchman Van Dijk has been training in isolation since telling Pellegrino he wants to leave last month.

Pellegrino added: “He won’t be available this weekend as he had some trouble with a virus and hasn’t trained the last two days.

“We are expecting him to come back and hopefully he can change his point of view.”

The van Dijk saga has dominated the early weeks of Pellegrino’s reign since being named as successor to the sacked Claude Puel.

But the Argentine insists his only focus is on downing the Swans.

Pellegrino said: “Swansea are a good team because they have a balance between defence and attack as they play with a diamond in the middle and the full backs up high.

“They also want to press higher up the pitch and it will be really tough for us. You will see more or less the same dynamic from us that you have in the last few games but we are ready.”

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino says Virgil van Dijk not bigger than team

Show/hide article…

Van Dijk this week slapped in a transfer request in a bid to force through his dream move to Liverpool. But the Saints remain adamant their axed captain will not be sold. Boss Mauricio Pellegrino said: “The problem here is that Virgil is one of the most important players. “But there isn’t one player more important than the 11 players playing together. “Virgil is an important player but the club was clear from the beginning with the player. We cannot control every situation and Virgil is part of our club because he has a contract.

“We are expecting him to come back and hopefully he can change his point of view” “The player is clear with his position but we have to keep going because I can’t control the thinking of the player at this moment.” Van Dijk has been training on his own since first telling Pellegrino he wants to leave and the £60m-rated defender will not feature against Swansea today due to an apparent illness. Pellegrino added: “He won’t be available this weekend as he had some trouble with a virus and hasn’t trained the last two days. “We are expecting him to come back and hopefully he can change his point of view.” The Van Dijk saga has dominated the opening weeks of Pellegrino’s reign since being named as successor to the sacked Claude Puel.

But the Argentine insists it will not distract the rest of his players from their opening day clash. Pellegrino said: “Swansea are a good team because they have a balance between defence and attack as they play with a diamond in the middle and the full backs up high. “They also want to press higher up the pitch and it will be really tough for us. You will see more or less the same dynamic from us that you have in the last few games but we are ready.” Saints are ready to hand a debut to midfielder Mario Lemina following his club record £18m move from Juventus. Lemina is one of only two summer signings alongside Polish defender Jan Bednarek and Pellegrino admits his search for new recruits is proving tough. He said: “The market is difficult. There are some really good players but it all depends on our budget and other clubs.”

Mauricio Pellegrino tells Virgil van Dijk the club is bigger than him

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s new manager Mauricio Pellegrino has warned mutinous captain Virgil van Dijk he is not bigger than the club.

Van Dijk will be conspicuous by his absence against Swansea on Saturday after Pellegrino claimed the want-away Dutchman has been struck down by a ‘virus.’

It comes days after Van Dijk publicly issued a transfer request in a bid to force through a £60million move to Liverpool.

Pellegrino said on Friday: 'The problem here is that Virgil is one of the most important players. But there isn’t one player more important than the 11 players playing together.

'Virgil is an important player but the club was clear from the beginning with the player. We cannot control every situation and Virgil is part of our club because he has a contract.

‘The player is clear with his position but we have to keep going because I can’ t control the thinking of the player at this moment.’

Van Dijk has been training alone since informing Pellegrino he wants to leave last month, but Southampton are adamant he will not be sold.

The former Celtic centre back signed a six-year contract to become the highest paid player in the club’s history only last month.

Pellegrino added: 'He won’t be available this weekend as he had some trouble with a virus and hasn’t trained the last two days.

‘We are expecting him to come back and hopefully he can change his point of view.’

The Van Dijk saga has dominated the embryonic weeks of Pellegrino’s reign after the former Liverpool defender was named as successor to the sacked Claude Puel.

But the Argentine insists the saga will not distract his players when the face Swansea at the St Mary’s Stadium.

Pellegrino said: ‘Swansea are a good team but we are ready.’
