Pellegrino still hoping to change van Dijk’s mind over transfer

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino still hopes that Saints can convince Virgil van Dijk to reconsider his St Mary’s future.

The Dutch centre half submitted a formal transfer request on Monday having insisted for weeks that he wants to leave the club.

Saints have stood firm and maintained their stance that he will not be sold.

As revealed by the Daily Echo today, there have not yet been any bids tabled for his services.

Pellegrino today fielded questions for the first time since the formal transfer request, and said: “My reaction is the same that I said three weeks ago. We are expecting him to come back to train with us because we need the player, we need all of them.

“Hopefully he can change his point of view, because we need the player. Virgil is an important player and we need him focusing on our club.”

He added: “The club was clear from the beginning with the player.

“We cannot control every single situation. We can decide our dynamic inside this club, and Virgil is part of our club. Good contract.

Pellegrino added that van Dijk has not trained for the last couple of days due to a virus.

Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk to miss Southampton game with illness

Show/hide article…

Want-away captain Virgil van Dijk will miss Southampton’s Premier League opener at home to Swansea on Saturday with ‘illness,’ new manager Mauricio Pellegrino claims.

Defender Van Dijk, 26, made his desire to leave public this week after handing in a written transfer request in a last-ditch attempt to force through a move to Liverpool.

Pellegrino said on Friday: 'He won’t be available this weekend as he had some trouble with a virus and hasn’t trained the last two days.

'But my reaction to his transfer request is the same as I said three weeks ago. We are expecting him to come back and hopefully he can change his point of view.

'Virgil is an important player. The club was clear from the beginning with the player and we cannot control every situation but Virgil is part of our club because he has a contract.

'I have spoken with Les Reed and the player about the situation but not too much as the club was clear.

‘The player is clear with his position but we had to keep going because I can’t control the thinking of the player at that moment.’

Van Dijk has been training alone at the club’s Staplewood base and said he was left with ‘no alternative’ but to demand a move just 12 months into a six-year contract making him Southampton’s highest paid player.

Meanwhile Pellegrino has hinted Saints’ summer spending is not over.

The south coast side have recruited only Polish defender Jan Bednarek and Juventus midfielder Mario Lemina so far.

Pellegrino added: ‘We never know because the market is difficult. There are some really good players but it all depends on our budget and other clubs.’

The Premier League wonderkids on cusp of first-team

Show/hide article…

The start of every new Premier League season feels a bit like a clean slate. Any player can make an impact on the first-team, anyone can become a star. That is no less the case for youngsters in the academy.

It’s hard to tell when a chance might come, but when it does, they need to grasp it. There will be several players in each youth team that a manager has earmarked for the moment injuries hit or changes need to be made.

Sportsmail has taken a look at a player at each club who could make their breakthrough this season.

Arsenal fans may be worried about Alexis Sanchez leaving, but in Reiss Nelson they have a kid who might be ready to fill his sizeable boots. He impressed during the pre-season tour of Asia, looking better than the majority of senior players on the pitch. Arsene Wenger clearly considers him to be a talent too, giving him his first-team bow in the Community Shield against Chelsea. Expect him to feature.

Injuries and the presence of Jack Wilshere damaged Lewis Cook’s prospects in his first Premier League season, but expect the World Cup winning captain to make his mark this time around. You will see few midfielders of his age with the ability to drive the ball up the field and with his range of passing. Hard not to see him reaching the top of the game.

Chris Hughton tends to favour experienced senior players in his side, and a first Premier League campaign is not necessarily the best place to blood young players. But keep watch for George Cox, a young defender with an eye for a long-range goal or two. Brighton do not have a great tradition of kids coming through - that could soon change.

Daniel Agyei was handed his Burnley debut in March last season after impressing while on loan at Coventry in the first half of the season. Looked good in his cameo appearances for the Clarets but will be hoping for more game time now that Andre Gray has left the club.

Every season it’s easy to identify at least one Chelsea prospect who should be given a real chance in the first-team. It rarely pans out. But Charly Musonda has impressed over pre-season following a loan spell at Real Betis and with so few players in the squad after their summer sales, it is easy to see him getting chances. A place behind Alvaro Morata could beckon for Musonda, who offers a creative edge.

Dubbed ‘the new Wilfried Zaha’ by some fans, Jason Lokilo was given a chance on Crystal Palace’s tour of Hong Kong. He impressed there, showing off the fact that, like Zaha, he can take on opposition full-backs and befuddle them with skill. And with Frank de Boer openly saying he wants to give young players a chance, Lokilo could be the beneficiary.

Everton are gaining a reputation as a club that brings through impressive young players, with several involved in England’s Under-20s success this summer. A number broke through last season, but Jonjoe Kenny could hope for more chances this season. The right-back has a good chance of starting on the opening day of the season after a series of injuries. It’s hard not to see a player of his talent taking it.

David Wagner is always keen to let young players have a chance. Philip Billing played a lot of football for the Terriers as they were promoted last season. If Regan Booty does not head out on loan - which still looks possible - he should make a few appearances this season. A classy left-footed central midfielder who has been on the fringes of the first team for a season or two.

George Thomas already has a lot of first-team football to his name after an impressive spell with Coventry City. Moved to Leicester this summer. Has been warned by Sky Blues manager Mark Robins not to get lost in the Under-23s squad at the Foxes, and will be hopeful that he has been picked up to get a chance or two this campaign. Scored at Wembley last season in the EFL Trophy final.

Half of the Championship wanted Ryan Kent on loan this summer. But he has been handed a significant seal of approval by Jurgen Klopp, who refused to sanction another short-term switch away from Anfield. If it were not for Kent, it is hard to have seen Barnsley doing as well as they did last season. He’s a nifty winger with a lovely cross - could feature heavily in cups.

There are few better ways to introduce yourself at first-team level than scoring against Real Madrid. Brahim Diaz did that during pre-season, bending in a wicked left-footed strike as Manchester City tore apart the Spanish giants. He then impressed in the following fixtures of the tour. One of a group of three players that Pep Guardiola has earmarked for involvement this season.

Given the players that have come through Manchester United’s academy, being the youngest to score a hat-trick at that youth level in the club’s history marks a player out. Angel Gomes achieved that feat when 15. Also named the youth team player of the year last season, the youngest United player to do so. He made his first team debut against Crystal Palace and Jose Mourinho clearly believes he is one to bring through, making him the youngest player to make his debut since the iconic Duncan Edwards.

Jamie Sterry impressed while spending part of last season on loan with Coventry City in League One. A talented right-back who could break into the first-team given the paucity of options available to Rafa Benitez ahead of their Premier League return. That said, Sterry might feel more comfortable playing in the Championship for a season.

Southampton bring through player after player every season and the next coming through the pipeline has to be Alfie Jones. A 6ft tall central defender who has talent in both feet. He is also remarkably elegant for his size but is equally adept in the air. May benefit from a loan in the lower leagues, but Sportsmail’s Secret Scout had little to complain about when watching him last season.

It’s of note that reports suggested that if Monaco sold Kylian Mbappe, they would look to sign Julien Ngoy from Stoke. He is considered one of the best young players in Europe, despite few knowing his name. Ngoy has already made his bow for Stoke but he needs to find regular first-team football now to continue his progression.

Oliver McBurnie made his mark on his first-team bow for the Swans last season, scoring twice in the EFL Cup second round against Peterborough. The problem was that a relegation battle is never a good place for a young player to impress, and chances - beyond five appearances - were limited. Expect him to play more if Swansea start better.

A veritable Football Manager regen of a player. Kyle Walker-Peters has taken the first two parts of his £54million predecessor’s name and may end up taking his position on the first day of the season. Kieran Trippier injured himself against Juventus and with no other right-backs in the team, Walker-Peters may get a very early chance for Spurs.

Named on the bench for the game against West Brom towards the end of last season. It was notable because Walter Mazzarri decided to promote him despite having most of his first-team players available to him. Described as an ‘exciting prospect’ by Watford’s academy chief Chris McGuane.

Won the young player of the season award while on loan with Shrewsbury Town last campaign. Tony Pulis is not famed for giving young players a chance but that has changed in recent years, not least with the example of Jonathan Leko. Tyler Roberts has already trained with Wales’s first-team and Gareth Bale, which shows his pedigree.

It is symbolic of how highly rated Domingos Quina is that he was given his debut during West Ham’s ill-fated European campaign last season. Chased by the likes of Chelsea before he joined the Hammers and now wanted by Arsenal. Quina could break into the senior squad this season and offer creativity they sometimes lacked last time out.

Southampton ‘hopeful’ that Virgil van Dijk will stay put amid Liverpool and Chelsea speculation

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino remains hopeful that Virgil van Dijk will “change his point of view” about wanting to leave the club.

The defender, who will his miss side’s Premier League opener against Swansea after being struck down with a virus, submitted a transfer request earlier this week asking that Southampton “consider the interest” in him.

Van Dijk continues to be linked with a move to Anfield despite Liverpool’s insistence in June that they had dropped their interest in the defender following Saints’ threat to report the club over an alleged illegal approach.

The 26-year-old has also attracted interest from the likes of Premier League champions Chelsea and Manchester City.

But after it emerged that none of the centre-back’s potential suitors have tabled an offer, Pellegrino expressed his belief that the player could still return to the fold at St Mary’s.

“My reaction is the same that I said three weeks ago,” he said. “We are expecting him to come back to train with us because we need the player, we need all of them.

“Hopefully he can change his point of view to be with us because we need the player. Virgil is an important player. We need him to focus on our club.

“The club was clear from the beginning. We were clear with the player.

“We cannot control every single situation. We can decide our job, our dynamic in this club, inside our club. Virgil is part of our club, he has a contract. But now we are waiting.”

Former Celtic player Van Dijk signed a new six-year contract in May 2016, having joined Southampton for £13m from Celtic in September 2015.

When quizzed on whether he would be available for selection this weekend, Pellegrino added: “No, no. Because this week he was with some trouble with a virus and he couldn’t train the last two days.”

The Argentine manager confirmed Saints will continue to chase more new recruits during the transfer window.

Club record signing Mario Lemina could make his competitive debut against Swansea at St Mary’s on Saturday, with fellow new arrival Jan Bednarek also in the mix to feature.

Confirming his desire to make further signings, Pellegrino said: "Yes, there are certain positions where we would like to add strength. But we never know because the market is difficult. It’s not easy for us.

"For me with Mario (Lemina) it’s a mix. He’s a defensive midfielder or a box-to-box midfielder and he has quality, strength in the middle. We didn’t have this profile of player I think.

"Jan (Bednarek) is a young player that I think has the capability to adapt to the Premier League. And Mario is a player that is coming from one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“We are happy with that. Both of them can help us to be stronger.”

Show/hide article…

Which Premier League stars are out of contract next summer?

Arsenal could lose up to 10 stars on free transfers or from retirement at the end of the season. We look at which Premier League players are out of contract next summer.

The ongoing Alexis Sanchez contract saga at Arsenal has dominated the headlines, but a host a fellow Gunners could leave the Emirates on free transfers in July.

Those players include Mesut Ozil, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla, Kieran Gibbs, Joel Campbell, Carl Jenkinson, Matt Macey and the retiring Per Mertesacker, according to transfermarkt.co.uk.

United also face a potential exodus, with Ander Herrera, Juan Mata, Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick, Luke Shaw, Daley Blind, Ashley Young, Andreas Pereira and Guillermo Varela all having entered the last year of their current deals.

However, the club confirmed they have an option to extend the contracts of all players for an additional year - with the exception of Carrick, Fellaini and Varela.

Swansea could lose Fernando Llorente, who will be partnering or competing with on-loan Chelsea forward Tammy Abraham this term, while Kyle Bartley and Angel Rangel also have expiring contracts with the Swans.

Crystal Palace have an entire team who could be free agents next summer, including Yohan Cabaye, James McArthur, Bakary Sako, Wayne Hennessey, Julian Speroni, Damien Delaney, Joel Ward, Martin Kelly, Hiram Boateng, Chung-Yong Lee and Freddie Ladapo.

West Brom and Stoke could both lose seven players, including Claudio Yacob (extension option), Chris Brunt (extension option), Gareth McAuley, Craig Dawson and James Morrison for the Baggies, and Ryan Shawcross, Peter Crouch and Glen Johnson for the Potters.

Andre Gray had entered his final year at Burnley before his £18.5m move to Watford - but the Clarets could still lose seven players for free next summer, including Dean Marney, Stephen Ward and Scott Arfield.

Everton have a high-profile quartet on expiring contracts, including Gareth Barry, Aaron Lennon, Joel Robles and Ross Barkley - who has been linked with a move to Tottenham.

Bournemouth have signed goalkeeper Asmir Begovic from Chelsea, which may see fellow Cherries stopper Artur Boruc leave the club as a free agent next summer.

Manchester City allowed five long-term servants to leave on free transfers this summer, while Yaya Toure and Fernandinho could leave for nothing in July next year.

Other big names with less than a year remaining on their contracts include Loic Remy (Chelsea), Willy Caballero (Chelsea), Emre Can (Liverpool), Robert Huth and Leonardo Ulloa (Leicester), James Collins (West Ham), Michel Vorm (Tottenham) and Jose Holebas (Watford).

Check out your club’s list of players with contracts expiring in July below…

*Contract information provided by transfermarkt.co.uk. Extension options only indicated for clubs that responded to confirmation requests.

Southampton v Swansea preview: Virgil van Dijk ruled out of opener

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk has been ruled out of Southampton’s Premier League opener with Swansea at St Mary’s on Saturday.

Mauricio Pellegrino takes charge of Southampton for the first time in England’s top flight but will not be able to call upon Van Dijk, who has not been training with the first-team squad because of a virus.

The former Celtic star has put in a transfer request at St Mary’s, but Southampton are determined to keep the player and their stance has not changed, according to Pellegrino.

“My reaction is the same,” said Pellegrino. "But I said three weeks ago we are expecting him to come back to train with us because we need the player, we need all of them. Hopefully he can change his point of view because he is an important player and we need him focused on the club.

“The club was clear from the beginning with the player. We cannot control every situation. Virgil is part of the club, he has a contract, now we are waiting.”

Swansea have omitted Gylfi Sigurdsson from their season-opener at Southampton as the saga over his proposed transfer to Everton continues.

Clement insists no deal has been agreed as of yet, but hinted both parties are looking for a speedy resolution.

“At the moment no (Sigurdsson will not play this Saturday),” he said. "I think it’s in the best interest with everyone involved that’s not the case, and in my plans that’s the situation that Gylfi will not be involved in the squad this weekend.

“We’ve got a number of weeks to go and I don’t anticipate it going to the end of the window. Of course I would like the situation resolved as soon as possible, I’ve said that quite clearly.”

Summer signings Mario Lemina and Jan Bednarek could make their competitive debuts for Saints as Pellegrino takes the helm for the first time in the Premier League.

Fernando Llorente is absent after fracturing his arm while on a cycling holiday last month, joining Nathan Dyer (Achilles) and Ki Sung-yueng (knee) on the sidelines.

England Under-21 striker Tammy Abraham is expected to make his debut on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

Southampton have won six of their last eight meetings with Swansea in the Premier League (W6 D0 L2).

Swansea’s only win at St Mary’s in the Premier League came in February 2015, with Jonjo Shelvey scoring the winner that day (D1 L3).

The Swans have failed to score in six of their 10 Premier League contests against Southampton.

In their last 10 Premier League seasons, Southampton have picked up an opening day win once (1-0 v West Brom in 2013, D5 L4).

Southampton have never won an opening day home fixture in the Premier League (D5 L4).

Swansea are unbeaten in their last three Premier League games to start the season (W2 D1).

The Swans will play away on the opening weekend in the Premier League yet again - only one of Swansea’s previous six Premier League seasons has started at home (2013-14, lost 4-1 to Manchester United).

Southampton will be looking to record their 1000th home league win in this match, since joining the Football League Third Division South in 1920-21 (P1881 W999 D485 L397).

Only one team - relegated Sunderland (16) - scored fewer home Premier League goals than Southampton’s tally of 17 last season.

Swansea loan signing Abraham - who has only two previous Premier League games to his name, both as a substitute for Chelsea - was the top scoring teenager in the Football League last season, netting 23 goals for Bristol City in the Championship.

Things will be better for Swansea this season, I don’t see them being caught up in a relegation fight like last term. They’ve obviously got to sort out the Sigurdsson situation because they will need time to replace him, but after that I see Paul Clement pushing the club on.

Saints are in a similar position with Van Dijk - will he or won’t he play? The main players from both teams look like they want to leave so they haven’t been able to settle in the run up the season. I see that having a big say in the outcome of this game.

Southampton are Sky Bet’s 8/13 favourites to start with a win as Swansea are put up against odds of 19/4, while the draw is priced at 14/5. Manolo Gabbiadini heads the first goalscorer betting at 7/2 from Charlie Austin (4/1), while Abraham is considered the visitors’ main threat at 13/2.

Southampton v Swansea is included this week’s Super 6 line-up, with a £1m jackpot guaranteed until won. Enter your predictions for free HERE.

Liverpool Transfer News: No Van Dijk bid, Klopp on Coutinho statement, Laxalt eyed

Show/hide article…

Liverpool are reportedly yet to make an offer for wantaway Southampton star Virgil Van Dijk.

The Holland international has been tipped to quit St. Mary’s this summer after attracting interest from the Reds, Chelsea and Manchester City.

And this week the 26-year-old reaffirmed his desire to quit the south coast side by handing an official transfer request to Saints chiefs.

The Daily Echo claim Southampton have not fielded any bids for Van Dijk since the end of last season though.

Southampton v Swansea City

Show/hide article…

Southampton say unsettled defender Virgil van Dijk is unavailable for their opening game because of a virus.

New Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino has no major injury concerns and could field summer signings Mario Lemina and Jan Bednarek.

Swansea midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson, who is a transfer target for Everton, will not be involved on Saturday.

Ki Sung-yueng, Nathan Dyer and Fernando Llorente are injured but Roque Mesa and Tammy Abraham could make their debuts.

John Roder: "Mauricio Pellegrino finished in the top 10 and reached a cup final at Alaves in Spain last season.

"That’s exactly what his predecessor Claude Puel achieved at Southampton, but excitement went missing under the French coach, with Saints scoring just 17 goals at home in the league.

"Both clubs’ preparations have been dominated by two players who won’t feature this weekend - unsettled pair Virgil van Dijk and Gylfi Sigurdsson.

"There’s no doubt Sigurdsson was Swansea’s best player last season, when Paul Clement turned their campaign around brilliantly to ensure survival.

“With Sigurdsson seemingly on his way out and Fernando Llorente injured, much will depend on how soon teenage striker Tammy Abraham settles into his first full season of Premier League football.”

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino on Virgil van Dijk: "Hopefully he can change his point of view, because we need the player. Virgil is an important player and we need him focusing on our club.

"The club was clear from the beginning with the player.

“We cannot control every single situation. We can decide our dynamic inside this club, and Virgil is part of our club. Good contract. Now we are waiting.”

Swansea head coach Paul Clement: "The Gylfi [Sigurdsson] situation is a crucial part of the business we could potentially do because it is going to be a high fee if he goes.

"We have to make sure that if a player of his ability leaves, we have to get one or two very good players. It is not just a matter of getting two players who sit on the bench, we want quality. They have a value, they are not cheap.

“The big thing about getting the right calculation is we can spend that money on good quality players. If he stays, we have a very good player already.”

I am going for a Southampton win, but I still think Swansea will have a decent season under Paul Clement.
