Southampton 0-0 Swansea - are you in our crowd pics?

Mauricio Pellegrino’s first competitive game in charge saw Saints create and play some pretty stuff, but ultimately failed to break down an increasingly defensive Swansea.

The visitors stacked men behind the ball in the second half, even substitute loan forward Abraham for centre-back Bartley.

Mixed emotions for Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

Saints drew 0-0 with Swansea City at St Mary’s, in what was the new manager’s first competitive match in charge.

His team dominated proceedings at St Mary’s, but were unable to find a way through and ultimately had to settle for a point.

“I’m a little bit disappointed, because we did everything to win the game,” he said. "We couldn’t, because football is like this – sometimes with a couple of chances you can score, but today we couldn’t.

"As a manager, you can work on the way to create chances, on the way to control the game, but to have the courage to score goals is something that is difficult. I think we had 29 shots and just two on target.

"It’s something that we have to continue working on, and keep going, but in parallel I am really happy with the performance. As a first game I think the level of the team was really high.

“Two or three players have been with us for only two or three weeks maximum and it’s not enough in this level, but they showed compromise, they showed commitment and especially they were really focused, controlling the opponent, because they were waiting to do some counter attacks and play long balls and, generally, I think we did a nice game. The only thing we are a little bit disappointed about is that we couldn’t score.”

Mauricio Pellegrino hopeful Virgil van Dijk will stay at Southampton

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino remains hopeful of convincing Virgil van Dijk to stay at St Mary’s.

Van Dijk missed Saints’ goalless draw with Swansea in their first Premier League game of the season with a virus.

The Dutchman’s absence further fuelled speculation linking him with the Southampton exit door, but Pellegrino insists there is a way for Van Dijk to reintegrate into Saints’ side.

“When you are outside the team you have to be behind them, supporting them,” said Pellegrino. "Hopefully he can change his point of view to be with us in the next few weeks. I’ve talked with him twice, and the club was clear with him.

"I think all of us at the club, the technical director, me as a manager, we know that Virgil is an important part of the club.

“But we need him in another way, not like the way he is right now.”

New Saints boss Pellegrino has inherited the club’s latest transfer tug-of-war, and conceded that such scenarios are no good for the game.

“I can’t manage all the situations like some players being outside the team; it’s not my responsibility,” he added.

“But it’s a pity because the people deserve to see the best players in the pitch. It happens and we have to keep going.”

Pellegrino’s comments came after his Southampton tenure kicked off with a stalemate against Swansea.

It prolonged the Saints’ miserable home goal drought to six league games, despite the hosts having 29 shots on goal.

“We did everything to win the game,” Pellegrino added. "Our football was effective. But we had to score.

"We created chances and played really well, especially in the second half controlling the ball and reducing the opponent to counter attacks.

"We were playing well but sometimes in football you create chances but are not precise enough to score goals.

"As a manager you work out how to create spaces and chances behind defences, in front of them, on the overlap and in wide areas, but to have the accuracy to score a goal is something that is difficult to work on.

Five stats from Saturday’s Premier League games to tell your mates

The Premier League is back with a bang.

Arsenal and Leicester kicked things off with Friday’s thriller at the Emirates Stadium, and there was plenty more excitement in Saturday’s games.

The highlights came at Vicarage Road, where Liverpool and Watford played out a thrilling 3-3 draw, and at Stamford Bridge, where nine-man Chelsea were beaten 3-2 by Burnley. Read on for our top five stats of the day.

Watford stunned Liverpool but perhaps the draw shouldn’t have come as too much of a surprise. In fact, the Hornets have not lost an opening day league game since 2006, when they were beaten 2-1 by Everton at Goodison Park.

Are Chelsea destined for another dismal Premier League title defence? Antonio Conte’s side became the first team in Premier League history to have two players sent off in their opening game as they were beaten 3-2 by Burnley.

Wayne Rooney announced his return to Goodison Park in style, scoring the only goal in Everton’s 1-0 win over Stoke. It brought his combined total of Premier League goals and assists to 300 (199 goals, 101 assists). Only Alan Shearer has more (324).

West Brom kicked off their campaign with a 1-0 win over Bournemouth at the Hawthorns thanks to a goal from debutant Ahmed Hegazy. They held on for the win despite having just 29 per cent possession.

Southampton and Swansea played out a goalless draw at St Mary’s Stadium but it would have been a different story if only the hosts could finish their chances. Mauricio Pellegrino’s men had 29 shots in total - but only two on target.

Virgil van Dijk and Gylfi Sigurdsson both sit out goalless draw between Southampton and Swansea

Show/hide article…

The opening weekend of the Premier League season has been dominated by goals, but sadly not at St Mary’s. While the net bulged around the country, Southampton failed to score for the sixth home game running as Swansea City escaped with a point despite being distinctly second best.

The build-up to this game had been dominated by events off the pitch. Virgil van Dijk was not in the Southampton side officially due to a “virus”, but just a few days after handing in a transfer request following Liverpool’s illegal approach for his service. Gylfi Sigurdsson also missed out for Swansea with a move to Everton imminent.

Certainly the Welsh side missed the creativity of Sigurdsson more than the Saints missed the defensive resilience of Van Dijk.

But new Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino knows it is at the other end of the pitch which now requires urgent attention following another afternoon of frustration.

Southampton certainly started with a purpose and they should have been ahead inside the opening minutes. First, Ryan Bertrand’s corner was glanced wide by the head of Manolo Gabbiadini and moments later the Saints left back’s burst of pace down the left set up a simple chance for Dusan Tadic who somehow sidefooted wide with the goal gaping. It set the pattern for the rest of the game.

Tammy Abraham for Swansea was the only full debutant for either side and the Chelsea loanee, who spent last season at Bristol City, came close at the other end for a first goal for the South Wales side with a header from Wayne Routledge’s cross.

But this was a match of total Southampton dominance and they did everything apart from find the net. James Ward-Prowse’s shot deflected over from a Nathan Redmond cross while Redmond’s powerful drive just cleared the goal.

Ward-Prowse was then denied by Lukasz Fabianski from a 25-yarder while Maya Yoshida’s shot from defensive partner Jack Stephens flashed just wide.

Swansea could have made Southampton pay for their profligacy at the start of the second half as Abraham’s trickery set up a shooting chance and when his effort was blocked, Leroy Fer curled just wide. That was as good as it got for the visitors in attack though.

Southampton continued to frustrate in front of goal as Redmond’s drive was deflected into the side netting while Gabbiadini curled wide from Tadic’s pass.

Yoshida’s deflected header from Ward-Prowse’s corner was Southampton’s next chance while Steven Davis’ effort from the edge of the area then also ricocheted wide.

Pellegrino sent on Charlie Austin and Sofiane Boufal in a desperate attempt to finally score goal and still they carved out chances with Tadic’s 30-yarder spectacular saved by Fabianksi and seconds later it was Yoshida who missed a gilt-edged opportunity heading wide with the goal at his mercy after Oriol Romeu had nodded on Davis’ cross.

Swansea responded by bringing on defender Kyle Bartley for Abraham, a move that did not go down well with the visiting supporters who showed their displeasure as Paul Clement seemingly settled for a point.

They had to ride their luck just to get that with Tadic missing the target from another excellent position.

Yoshida was proving to be Southampton’s biggest threat too and when his 25-yard free kick curled around the wall in injury time, some long-suffered fans thought it was in before realising it had just missed its target.

Austin then had more supporters on their feet when he drilled a shot against the side netting. It just was not Southampton’s day and their players’ disappointment was evident at the final whistle.

Saints and Big Issue giving vulnerable adults brighter future

Show/hide article…

For Big Issue vendor Mark Morgan, having the ability to earn his own money has helped him turn his life around.

“Since I started doing The Big Issue, it has got me my confidence back,” says Mark. "I’ve got somewhere to live and I’m saving money I earn from it.

“I wouldn’t have had that chance of getting a normal job, being homeless. I don’t know where I’d be now if I hadn’t started doing it.”

And thanks to a unique partnership between Southampton and The Big Issue, launched this week, many more people will have the opportunity to get back on their feet.

A special Southampton edition of the magazine is now available to buy across the city and the surrounding areas and will be the official matchday programme for Saturday’s Premier League season opener against Swansea City.

As part of the initiative, Big Issue vendors will also be provided with the opportunity to enrol in an eight-week employability programme, run by Saints Foundation, which will equip them with job-ready skills and offer work placements across the club.

When the course is completed, vendors will be able to apply for long-term appointments with Southampton FC.

To launch the partnership, Mark and fellow vendor Lee Barnes met first-team player Jack Stephens at the club’s training ground while first-team players Nathan Redmond, Oriol Romeu, Manolo Gabbiadini and Florin Gardos visited Winchester to join local vendors in selling the magazine. You can see how they got on in the video above.

“It’s been amazing to meet the players,” said Lee. "What we’ve done has brought a lot of focus to the Big Issue and hopefully that focus will carry on throughout the partnership.

“I am excited to be selling at match day this Saturday and having met some of the players, it means even more to me now.”

Is 2017/18 the Premier League’s best opening weekend?

Show/hide article…

The Premier League has returned in thrilling style - but is this the best opening weekend ever?

It started with Arsenal’s thrilling 4-3 win over Leicester at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night, before Liverpool and Watford played out another goal-fest in Saturday’s early kick-off.

Reigning champions Chelsea were stunned by Burnley at Stamford Bridge, with Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas seeing red in the 3-2 defeat.

There was a goal for Wayne Rooney on his second Everton debut as the Toffees claimed a 1-0 win over Stoke at Goodison Park.

Newly-promoted Huddersfield made an unforgettable start to life in the Premier League as they romped to a 3-0 win at Crystal Palace in Frank de Boer’s first game in charge of the Eagles.

Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Brighton took the goal total to 25 in eight games ahead of Nissan Super Sunday, but how does the weekend so far compare to previous years? Here, we recall some of the best.

In the early years of the Premier League, the 1995/96 opening weekend stands out. It was then that Manchester United, who would go on to win the title, were famously beaten 3-1 by Aston Villa.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side had finished 16 places above the Midlanders in the previous campaign, but goals from Ian Taylor, Mark Draper and Dwight Yorke put them in major trouble before half-time.

A certain David Beckham pulled a goal back in the closing stages, but having sold Paul Ince, Mark Hughes and Andrei Kanchelskis and signed nobody that summer, the defeat prompted Alan Hansen’s famous assertion that “you can’t win anything with kids”.

There was entertainment elsewhere, too, with 28 goals in total. The pick of the other games was Southampton’s 4-3 defeat at home to Middlesbrough. Amazingly, it was the second Premier League game in which Matt Le Tissier had scored a hat-trick and still ended up on the losing side.

The opening weekend of the 2003/04 campaign was the highest-scoring in Premier League history, with a whopping total of 36 goals hitting the back of the net up and down the country.

The game of the weekend came at Anfield, where Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s late strike clinched a 2-1 victory for Chelsea in the first Premier League game under Roman Abramovich’s ownership.

The Russian billionaire, who had funded a huge spending spree that summer, watched from the directors’ box. Chelsea had to wait until the following season for their first Premier League title, but that win sent a message about what was to come.

Elsewhere, Arsenal, who would finish the season as unbeaten title winners, clinched a 2-1 win over Everton despite having Sol Campbell sent off midway through the first half at Highbury.

Defending champions Manchester United started with a 4-0 thrashing of Bolton, and there were also big wins for Manchester City and Blackburn.

The 2006/07 opening weekend was another memorable one, with 33 goals scored in total. Manchester United, who would end up pipping Chelsea to the title, accounted for five of them as they thrashed Fulham 5-1.

Down in London, Olof Mellberg threatened to spoil Arsenal’s first game in the Emirates Stadium when he put Aston Villa ahead shortly after half-time, but Gilberto Silva salvaged a draw six minutes from time.

Arsenal’s north London rivals Tottenham fared even worse, suffering a 2-0 defeat away to an injury-hit Bolton side. Sam Allardyce barely had enough fit first-teamers to fill his squad, but the Trotters secured a shock win thanks to a goal from Kevin Davies and a 43-yard stunner from Ivan Campo.

There was drama at Bramall Lane, too, where newly-promoted Sheffield United hosted Liverpool after a 12-year absence from the top flight. Rob Hulse put them ahead just after the break, and the Reds required a controversial penalty won by Steven Gerrard and converted by Robbie Fowler to salvage a draw.

Reigning champions Chelsea made a major statement of intent as they opened the 2010/11 season with a thumping 6-0 thrashing of West Brom thanks to a Didier Drogba hat-trick, two goals from Florent Malouda and another from Frank Lampard.

Chelsea were eventually beaten to the title by Manchester United, who started their campaign with a 3-0 win at home to Newcastle.

There was drama at Anfield, where Liverpool, who had debutant Joe Cole sent off, were on course for a 1-0 win over Arsenal until a mistake from Pepe Reina allowed Arsenal to rescue a point at the death.

It was also an historic weekend for Blackpool, who travelled to Wigan for the first Premier League game in their history and claimed a brilliant 4-0 win. The Tangerines were eventually relegated, but memories from that opening weekend live on.

Southampton, Swansea bosses criticise Van Dijk, Sigurdsson after draw

Show/hide article…

Southampton and Swansea’s bosses have hit out at their wantaway stars short-changing supporters by missing Saturday’s Premier League season opener at St Mary’s.

Saints wasted a hatful of chances in labouring to a goalless draw with Swansea on the south coast, where Virgil Van Dijk and Gylfi Sigurdsson were conspicuous by their absence.

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino and Swansea manager Paul Clement both admitted their clubs and supporters are missing out while their top stars remain out of action.

Saints defender Van Dijk officially sat out with a virus but continues to agitate for a transfer, while Swansea have opted not to select Sigurdsson as he edges ever closer to a big-money move to Everton.

Asked if everyone loses out when transfer sagas keep the best talent off the pitch, Swansea boss Clement replied: "Fans, teammates, coaches, the viewers all around the world; absolutely.

“What would be a better situation would be if the transfer window closed before the start of the season. I don’t really understand why it goes to the end of August. I know there’s talks about that changing in future. And that’s my opinion that it should do.”

Dutch centre-back Van Dijk could well end up at Liverpool by the end of this transfer window. If Philippe Coutinho forces through his move to Barcelona from Liverpool, then the Reds are likely to raise their bid for Van Dijk and prise the ex-Celtic man away from Southampton.

New Saints boss Pellegrino has inherited the club’s latest transfer tug-of-war, and conceded that such scenarios are no good for the game.

“I can’t manage all the situations like some players being outside the team; it’s not my responsibility,” said Pellegrino. “But it’s a pity because the people deserve to see the best players in the pitch. It happens and we have to keep going.”

Southampton dragged their St Mary’s goal drought to 545 minutes in a frustrating stalemate against a dogged but limited Swansea, the visitors clearly struggling without Sigurdsson and the injured Fernando Llorente.

Swansea boss Clement admitted his side were fortunate to sneak a point, then admitted he hopes for a quick resolution over Sigurdsson.

When quizzed on links to Stoke’s Joe Allen, Clement replied: "I’m not going to speak about incoming players. The only situation that’s important at the moment is the Gylfi Sigurdsson transfer situation.

"If that does go through then we can start acting on potential targets. I want to do that kind of stuff in private until there’s something certain.

“There’s a situation where both clubs have not agreed, there’s a difference of opinion on the valuation of the player. But I don’t think it’s far away now.”

Southampton boss Pellegrino remains far more upbeat about his unsettled star’s potential future at the club however, continuing to insist there is a way for Van Dijk to reintegrate into Saints’ side.

“When you are outside the team you have to be behind them, supporting them,” said Pellegrino. "Hopefully he can change his point of view to be with us in the next few weeks.

“I’ve talked with him [Van Dijk] twice, and the club was clear with him. I think all of us at the club, the technical director, me as a manager, we know that Virgil is an important part of the club. But we need him in another way, not like the way he is right now.”

WATCH: Southampton 0-0 Swansea highlights

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s goal drought at St Mary’s stretched to 545 minutes as they laboured to a frustrating Premier League stalemate against Swansea.

Saints wasted a host of chances to open their new campaign with a galling 0-0 draw against the insipid and limited visitors.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s side dominated virtually from start to finish, but lacked the killer instinct needed to clinch the three points.

Southampton have still not scored at home since the 3-1 league win over Crystal Palace on April 5. So despite a new manager, a fresh influx of players and a new season, this was the same profligate Saints.

Nathan Redmond and Ryan Bertrand combined to lay on scores of openings for their team-mates, but James Ward-Prowse, Manolo Gabbiadini and Dusan Tadic were all found wanting in front of goal.

Frenchman Claude Puel paid with his job in the summer for Saints’ inability to link midfield and attack and convert chances last term.

New boss Pellegrino already appears to have generated more impetus than Puel managed, but the south-coast side were still left to rue opportunities missed.
