Liverpool fans demand signing of Virgil van Dijk after defensive shocker

Show/hide article…

Have the Premier League’s top sides just decided to dispense with defending this season?

Arsenal’s backline looked particularly wobbly at times during the Premier League’s opening game of the season, as they beat Leicester in a 4-3 thriller.

However, The Gunners did at least manage to win the first match of 2017/18. In the second match of the campaign, Liverpool produce a defensive display perhaps even more shoddy, only coming away from Watford with a 3-3 draw.

On a day when his side scored three goals and Mo Salah got on the scoresheet on his debut, Jurgen Klopp should have been celebrating a good day for The Reds.

But Liverpool’s defensive display was so wobbly, so unconvincing and so worrying, you won’t find many Liverpool supporters feeling too confident about their side’s supposed title challenge right now.

In fact, the uncertain nature of their backline means most Liverpool fans are now adamant that Liverpool just get on with the business of FINALLY signing Virgil van Dijk. Will he sign? Check out the odds and have a punt here with 888sport.

Report: Saints 0-0 Swansea

Show/hide article…

Despite creating a number of good opportunities, including Manolo Gabbadini striking the woodwork, Saints were unable to find the goal that would have earned all three points.

Mauricio Pellegrino named an unchanged starting eleven from the side that saw off Sevilla 2-0 in the final pre-season friendly at St Mary’s.

And Saints soon fashioned an early chance to take the lead. After just two minutes James Ward-Prowse crossed for Gabbiadini at the near post, but the Italian saw his header bounce clear off the woodwork.

Moments later Saints had another opportunity to take the lead. Nathan Redmond sent Ryan Bertrand scarpering down the left and the full-back crossed for Tadić at the near post, but he was unable to adjust his feet quickly enough and struck wide.

Having rode their luck early on, the visitors were soon creating some chances of their own. Tammy Abraham had the whole goal to aim at as he connected with Wayne Routledge’s cross inside the Saints box, but the Chelsea loanee steered his header wide of the post.

Saints were continuing to cause Swansea real issues down the left and Redmond drove to the byline to cut back for James Ward-Prowse once again, but his shot was blocked off the line by a sea of Swansea players.

Redmond and Ward-Prowse then both tried their luck from distance within five minutes each other; with Redmond’s left-footed strike heading over the crossbar and Ward-Prowse’s safely into the arms of Lukasz Fabianski.

It continued to be Saints creating all of the chances. On 37 minutes a deep cross from the left was headed back across goal by Jack Stephens and into the path of Maya Yoshida, but the centre back’s acrobatic volley flew wide of the post in what was the final chance of the half.

Swansea arrived back after the break with added impetus and Abraham almost amended for his earlier miss to fire them ahead. The 19-year-old spun perfectly into space inside the Saints area and looked certain to score before his effort was well blocked by Cédric.

On 69 minutes Pellegrino made his first changes of the afternoon, as Gabbiadini and Ward-Prowse made way for Charlie Austin and Sofiane Boufal.

Tadić and Yoshida then had good chances to earn Saints all three points with ten minutes remaining. First, Tadić saw his 30-yard fierce strike parried behind by Fabianski before Yoshida then headed over from close range following the subsequent corner.

With five minutes remaining Pellegrino made his final substitution of the afternoon, as Sam McQueen replaced Bertrand.

In the final minutes of the game Saints had two chances to take all three points. Yoshida saw his 25-yard free-kick scrape the outside of the side-netting before substitute Austin then struck the same part of the goal with a clean hit to ensure a draw on the opening day of the season.

Southampton 0 Swansea City 0: New manager but same old problems for goal-shy Saints

Show/hide article…

It is 545 minutes since Southampton last scored a goal at St Mary’s. In that time, a manager has been sacked, another appointed and their captain has submitted a transfer request.

Saints didn’t miss Virgil van Dijk against Swansea, with Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens dealing impressively with the threat offered by Tammy Abraham in his first appearance for Swansea. Officially, Van Dijk was ruled out with a virus, but the Dutchman has played no part in Southampton’s pre-season fixtures. “Right now, it’s something that I can’t manage,” said Southampton’s new manager Mauricio Pellegrino. “Hopefully we are waiting for him to come and train with the team and be part of it.”

In the absence of their own talismanic creator, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Swansea struggled to create chances and Abraham was often an isolated figure.

Swansea manager Paul Clement voiced his frustration at the uncertainty caused by Sigurdsson’s protracted transfer to Everton and feels that situations such as his and Van Dijk’s are not good for “fans, teammates, coaches, the viewers all round the world. What would be a better situation would be if the window closed before the start of the season,” he said.

Southampton 0-0 Swansea: Report

Show/hide article…

In an opening game where the two men in the spotlight were absent, Southampton and Swansea City found themselves sorely lacking star quality in a goalless stalemate.

All the talk around these clubs this summer has centred on the futures of Virgil van Dijk and Gylfi Sigurdsson. Here, neither played — while the men that did shut each other out.

Southampton created plenty of chances but lacked a clinical edge, while Swansea were often camped in their own half and looked devoid of creativity. Not a great preview for a new season of potential success for either side.

Paul Clement revealed Sigurdsson is now ‘not far away’ from a £50million move to Everton, while Southampton are adamant that Van Dijk is not Liverpool or Chelsea-bound. Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino says the Dutch defender is expected back at training ‘soon’.

But those two protracted transfers will rumble on from here. On Saturday, Southampton and Swansea had a game to concentrate on — one they both struggled with. Saints were proliferate; the Swans were pinned back.

Clement walked into his post-match press conference and declared: ‘I thought we deserved to win.’ But that was quickly followed by: 'That’s a joke… It was a really hard afternoon for us. We suffered a lot.

‘On reflection I’m happy to be leaving here with a point. Under similar circumstances last season this team would have lost that — and we didn’t.’

For it was Southampton who created chance after chance, only to fail to find the cutting edge to finish. New boss Pellegrino extends a home record without a goal that now stands at 545 minutes.

He made little change to predecessor Claude Puel’s set-up — Manolo Gabbiadini for Charlie Austin was the only switch to the team that started the last game of last season.

What did appear different for Saints, though, was a renewed attacking verve that they so sorely lacked here last season, scoring just 17 goals at St Mary’s.

The switch-up showed from the start as they twice went close to scoring in the first four minutes. First, Ryan Bertrand’s corner was flicked on to the top of the crossbar by the head of a back-pedalling Gabbiadini. Moments later the England left back was the provider again, bursting to the byline to pull back to Dusan Tadic six yards out who inexplicably scuffed a tap-in wide with St Mary’s rocking.

In the opposing dugout, Clement had gone with just one starting debutant himself, Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham getting an outing up front.

Having hit 23 Championship goals at Bristol City last season, he should have grabbed a first in the Premier League on 10 minutes, rising high at the near post to direct Jordan Ayew’s cross narrowly wide with a free header.

Otherwise though, Saints were on top and having plenty of joy down the left where Nathan Redmond, Tadic and Bertrand could link-up. A combination of the former two created another pulled-back chance from the byline, this time for James Ward-Prowse — denied by Lukasz Fabianski. Southampton managed 13 attempts at goal in the opening period but that proved to be the only one to test the Polish goalkeeper.

Swansea looked to be relying on Abraham to nick them a goal and after half-time he almost did, brilliantly turning away from a challenge in the area after taking in Leroy Fer’s pass before his eventual shot was blocked.

Saints, meanwhile, continued to frustrate inside the box as another Gabbiadini effort drifted wide and a series of low crosses failed to find their targets.

Pellegrino hauled the Italian centre forward off and replaced him with Austin but the story was more of the same until Swansea’s tight defence opened up for Maya Yoshida.

A corner earned by a Tadic drive from distance was flicked on by Oriol Romeu and suddenly the Japanese defender was free, alone at the back post six yards out — only to head over. He and substitute Austin both hit the side-netting in stoppage time, too.

Swansea, happy to leave with a point, had dropped deeper as Clement brought Abraham off for an additional defender in Kyle Bartley — a move booed by the travelling fans.

Perhaps, on an afternoon of no goals where they were denied a viewing of the two star men, they felt short-changed. Clement said he understood the supporters’ frustrations.

Of Sigurdsson and Van Dijk’s absences, Pellegrino added: ‘It’s a pity — the people deserve to see the best players on the pitch.’

Southampton 0-0 Swansea: Sixth successive stalement for Saints

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s miserable home goal drought continued as they were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Swansea on the opening day of the season.

There was plenty of positivity around St. Mary’s ahead of a new campaign under newly-appointed manager Mauricio Pellegrino, but a sixth successive stalemate spoiled the occasion.

The Saints dominated from the first whistle to last, registering 29 shots on goal - two on target - but failed to convert their dominance against a dogged Swansea outfit.

It means nine hours and five minutes of Premier League football have passed at St Mary’s since Southampton last scored - James Ward-Prowse’s strike against Crystal Palace on April 5.

Manolo Gabbiadini’s second-minute header clipped the crossbar and Dusan Tadic fired wide two minutes later as Saints, keen to atone for failing to score in their final five home games of last season, flew out of the traps.

Tammy Abraham failed to take advantage of that reprieve, heading Wayne Routledge’s cross wide on 10 minutes as Swansea stirred.

Southampton soon regained control though but failed to score as Gabbiadini’s turned Tadic’s cross over before Alfie Mawson and Marcus Olsson blocked Ward-Prowse’s effort.

Lukasz Fabianski pulled off a fine stop to deny Ward-Prowse’s curling effort on 25 minutes before referee Mike Jones chose not to award the hosts a penalty when Federico Fernandez tripped Tadic in the area.

Maya Yoshida acrobatically volleyed wide on 37 minutes and Abraham’s great swivel and shot was headed clear by Cedric Soares a minute after the restart.

Saints were soon back in charge, though, as Gabbiadini curled a shot wide on 52 minutes. But there was to be no way through for Southampton as Fabianksi denied Tadic 11 minutes from time and Yoshida headed a glorious chance over on 80 minutes.

Mauricio Pellegrino: We did everything to win the game. Our football was effective. But we had to score. We were playing well but sometimes in football you create chances but are not precise enough to score goals.

Paul Clement: Southampton had a massive amount of shots so I’m sure they are going to be disappointed and be thinking how they haven’t won. But, at the same time, we’ve hung in until the very end, so, overall, I’m pleased to have come away with a point.

One of the few bright lights in a hugely uninspiring affair. Bertrand grafted hard and combined well with Nathan Redmond to carve Swansea open down the left flank time and again.

Southampton will look to end their goal drought on Saturday when West Ham travel to St Mary’s. Swansea, meanwhile, look to maintain their impressive recent record against Manchester United when they travel to the Liberty Stadium on Premier League Live.

Premier League round-up: Nine-man Chelsea stunned by Burnley, Rooney the hero for Everton

Show/hide article…

The 2017/18 Premier League season is finally under way and here’s what happened on the opening Saturday…

Nine-man Chelsea made a disastrous start to their Premier League title defence as they were beaten at home by Burnley.

The champions had Gary Cahill sent off early on for a dangerous tackle and the Clarets made their numerical advantage count as they stormed into a 3-0 lead before half-time, with Sam Vokes netting twice and Stephen Ward also getting on the scoresheet.

Substitute Alvaro Morata fired home on his league debut midway through the second half to reduce the deficit. The Blues’ hopes of mounting a comeback looked to have been ended when Cesc Fabregas was given his marching orders with ten minutes left to play but David Luiz netted two minutes from time to set up a frantic finale.

There was to be no further late drama, though, as the Clarets held out for a brilliant - and fully deserved - opening day win.

Frank De Boer’s Crystal Palace reign got off to a nightmare start as Huddersfield Town stormed to victory at Selhurst Park in their first ever Premier League match.

Palace defender Joel Ward turned the ball into his own net to hand the Terriers the lead midway through the first half and just minutes later record signing Steve Mounie doubled the visitors’ advantage.

Mounie capped a dream debut with another goal after the break to earn David Wagner’s newly-promoted team an impressive win.

Palace fans started the season with renewed optimism amid De Boer’s appointment as manager but they will be worried by their woeful performanc, which suggests another year of struggle.

Wayne Rooney scored on his second Premier League debut for Everton to earn the Toffees victory against Stoke City.

The 31-year-old, who returned to Goodison Park earlier this summer after 13 years at Manchester United, headed home Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s cross on the stroke of half-time.

Jordan Pickford made a brilliant stop late on from Xherdan Shaqiri to prevent a Stoke equaliser - and ensure a dream homecoming for Rooney.

Mauricio Pellegrino had to settle for a point in his first match as Southampton manager as his side wasted a series of chancs.

The home side dominated throughout but were unable to make a breakthrough, with Manolo Gabbiadini and Maya Yoshida guilty of spurning good opportunities.

Swansea failed to muster a single shot on target and will be relieved to have escaped with a point against a Southampton side which has now failed to score at St Mary’s in 545 minutes.

Tony Pulis celebrated signing an extended contract in the best possible fashion as West Brom began the new Premier League campaign with a 1-0 win over Bournemouth at The Hawthorns.

Pulis, who will now remain as Baggies boss until 2019 after putting pen to paper on a new deal on Friday, saw new signing Ahmed Hegazi enjoy a dream debut.

The central headed home Chris Brunt’s free-kick on 31 minutes and that was enough to see off Eddie Howe’s men.

Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool: Reds must sign Southampton star - Jamie Redknapp

Show/hide article…

Liverpool drew 3-3 with Watford today with the Reds’ defensive frailties on show once again.

And Redknapp says Liverpool need to sign Van Dijk, who has handed in a transfer request to force a move away from Southampton.

“He’s better than what they’ve got, that’s why I’m saying they should get him,” Redknapp said on Sky Sports of Van Dijk.

“I’m saying 100 per cent he would (make a difference).

“As that ball comes in, Matip sort of ducks out of the way. You can see him there, No.32, I don’t think he’s in a great position there.

“He’s facing the ball, he’s not really turning his shoulder and you can see Okaka come into that area.

How the debutants fared during Southampton’s draw with Swansea

Show/hide article…

This game was begging for a player to take the attention away from the missing Virgil van Dijk and Gylfi Sigurdsson – but no one could oblige in the goalless draw at St Mary’s Stadium.

With the unsettled Van Dijk angling for a move from Southampton, just as City’s Sigurdsson is being linked with a big-money transfer, it was the Saints who coped far better without their talisman.

Southampton created the best chances with 28 shots on target and came the closest to breaking the deadlock when Manolo Gabbiadini’s smart header caught both the defence and Lukasz Fabianski napping – only to clip the top of the bar.

The Saints could have nicked all three points right at the death when when Maya Yoshida fired a free-kick just wide and substitute Charlie Austin hit the ball into the side netting as both sides had to settle for a point.

Our man at the ground, Hector Nunns, has run the rule over how the debutants performed.

The new Southampton manager went for the casual look on the touchline, alongside Swansea’s Paul Clement who was suited and booted.

But there was nothing informal about the way he set up his team for a first Premier League match, after arriving from La Liga club Alaves over the summer.

The Argentinian knew a bit about defending as a player for Barcelona, Valencia, and for a brief time Liverpool. It was only goals that were missing today and Saints should have had three or four.

Even without unsettled star defender Virgil van Dijk, missing with a virus, the pairing of Jack Stephens and Maya Yoshida kept Tammy Abraham and Jordan Ayew fairly quiet.

The teenage striker scored for fun for Bristol City on loan from Chelsea in the Championship last season – and that saw the level of suitor go up a few notches for Abraham.

The going is expected to be a lot tougher this season, with the Premier League champions keen to see how he will fare against tougher defences.

The 19-year-old forward was only inches off target with a towering header after just 10 minutes, served up with an inviting cross from the right.

And in the 46 minute a brilliant turn from a player full of confidence almost yielded a goal, but for another last-ditch Southampton block. Brought off after 80 minutes.

Southampton 0-0 Swansea: Frustrated Saints start with a blank

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino’s first game in charge of Saints ended in frustration as his side were left to rue missed opportunities as they were held to an opening day goalless draw by Swansea.

It made it six games in a row without a goal for Saints at St Mary’s – a total of 545 minutes.

Saints were applauded off the pitch after an attacking display which should have yielded a win against an average Swansea side but it underlined the issues facing Pellegrino this season.

Saints got off to a flying start and came close to taking the lead after just two minutes.

Ryan Bertrand whipped in a dangerous inswinging corner that was met at the near post by the darting run of Manolo Gabbiadini, who got just ahead of Leroy Fer.

Gabbiadini’s glanced header from six yards out clipped the top of the bar and went over.

If that was unfortunate then just two minutes later Saints were wasteful as they spurned a golden opportunity.

Bertrand was heavily involved again with a great overlapping run down the left and a perfect cutback to Dusan Tadic in the six yard box.

Tadic should have scored but put his first time side footed wide.

Swansea had been on the back foot for ten minutes but had a great chance themselves as Jordan Ayew lifted in a cross from the right which found Tammy Abraham ahead of Jack Stephens.

He had virtually a free header from ten yards out but steered it just wide of the post.

Nathan Redmond picked up Saints’ first booking of the season as he tried to prevent Lukasz Fabianski from clearing the ball out of his hands in the area.

Saints were left frustrated again on 20 minutes as Redmond cut back from the left by-line to James Ward-Prowse in space 12 yards out.

He hit a first time shot that deflected off of Alfie Mawson and over the bar. There were a few appeals for handball but referee Mike Jones wasn’t interested.

Redmond had a go himself four minutes later but his effort from range flashed over the bar before Ward-Prowse measured an effort from 20 yards which Fabianski fielded diving to his left.

Swansea made a clear shift in tactics midway through the first half. Having been fairly open, which suited Saints, they dropped very deep, getting ten men behind the ball and trying to make themselves harder to pick apart.

Oriol Romeu was booked for jumping into a header leading with his arm, which knocked over Tom Carroll, but it was a harsh one as it looked worse than it was.

Saints started to pile the pressure on again and Maya Yoshida went close with an acrobatic half volley from eight yards out after Stephens had cushioned a header back towards his central defensive partner.

That turned out to be the final opening of a half which Saints had dominated but couldn’t find a breakthrough, despite numerous chances.

Swansea began the second half on the front foot and Saints were grateful to Cedric Soares for making a block from Abraham’s shot before Fer blasted a follow up across goal and wide.

Gabbadini responded at the other end as he tried to curl the ball into the far corner with his left foot but it went narrowly past the post.

The Swans were making a better of fist of things in the second period.

Saints were not really pressing Swansea’s persistent attempts to play out from the back and they were briefly growing in confidence as an attacking force with Abraham at the heart of it.

Having already missed chances in the game, Saints needed to find a way through before any element of frustration set in around St Mary’s.

Swansea started to abandon their attacking policy and reverted to sitting deep. Saints were dominating possession and getting a lot of the ball in and around the area but doing anything decisive with it was proving tricky.

Pellegrino made his first change on 69 minutes in an attempt to try and make something happen with Charlie Austin replacing Gabbiadini in attack.

Saints won a series of corners and were desperately trying to make the breakthrough.

Steven Davis tried a half volleyed shot from the edge of the area that was well struck but looped over via a deflection.

Sofiane Boufal was introduced on 71 minutes coming on for Ward-Prowse.

Swansea responded by bringing on Jay Fulton for Leon Britton. It hardly seemed to be an attacking change which meant they were obviously going to be camping in aiming to keep a clean sheet for the remainder of the match.

Saints did have time on the ball a little deeper and Tadic tried to make the most of it with a fearsome shot from 25 yards out that moved in the air before Fabianski dived to his right to turn it wide.

They had a fantastic opening on 79 minutes as Davis crossed from the left, Romeu flicked the ball on to the far post and Yoshida had a free header just inside the six yard box at the far post but he put over the bar.

Swansea made a second change with Kyle Bartley replacing Abraham. It was another defensive change which was booed by the travelling support.

Another well worked move from Saints ended in frustration as Tadic side footed over.

Saints were forced into a final substitution four minutes from time as Bertrand limped off injured to be replaced by Sam McQueen while Oli McBurnie came on for Wayne Routledge for Swansea.

The fourth official held up the board to show three minutes of added time to a huge roar from the St Mary’s crowd desperate to see their side turn their dominance throughout the game into a deserved winning goal.

Yoshida tried to deliver just that as he curled a 20 yard free kick around the outside of the wall but ruffled the net before Austin’s effort from a tight angle had the same end result as the game ended goalless.

Yeovil 3-2 Accrington: Olufela Olomola’s brace earns Yeovil victory

Show/hide article…

Kayden Jackson got the opener for Stanley in the 12th minute with an easy tap-in after a Billy Kee shot from distance was parried into his path.

The Glovers made it 1-1 on 26 minutes when Olomola broke into the area to find Otis Khan and, when his shot was blocked, the forward was on hand to score.

Having already hit the bar, Francois Zoko then gave the hosts the lead in the 38th minute as the Ivorian turned in a knock-down at the second attempt.

Less than a minute later it was 3-1 when a long ball eliminated the entire Accrington defence and Olomola did well to loft it over the onrushing Aaron Chapman.

The visitors were given a lifeline after 53 minutes when a mistake allowed Jackson in to score again, but despite dominating the second half they could not find an equaliser.

Tadić rues missed chances in Swans draw

A dominant display from Mauricio Pellegrino’s men was not rewarded with a victory despite a plethora of chances as Saints had to settle for a 0-0 draw.

Tadić reflected: “We expect to win this game and when you watch everything I think we deserved to score goals but we missed a lot of chances.

“If you score an open goal, it would have been easier and it is a totally different game.

“But we need to keep going and the next game is against West Ham, where we will try to win.

“There is a lot of positive things, we just missed scoring a goal from our chances.”

Southampton 0-0 Swansea: Pellegrino disappointed by draw

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino admitted his frustration that Saints couldn’t turn their total dominance into an opening day victory against Swansea.

Saints hit the bar and spurned countless good chances as a goalless draw heralded a club record six league matches in a row without scoring at home – some 545 minutes in total taking into account the barren run at the back end of last season.

Pellegrino did get Saints playing in a more positive manner, but the issues with goalscoring clearly have yet to be resolved.

He said: “This is football, it is something that we have to keep going and we have to improve, but parallel we play a game that we thought we had to play.

“We controlled the game, we controlled the opponent, especially in the second half.

“We never concede any counter attack and I think we did a good performance but in football it is effectiveness and you have to put the ball inside (the net) and we couldn’t and we have to keep going.”

For Pellegrino, the challenge remains just how to find goals in the team.

“As a manager you can work in the way how to create chances, how to play in what areas in the corridor in front of the defenders and behind them,” he reflected.

“The game, the association, between our full back and winger and striker, the connection between them, but it is really difficult to work. You can do finishing every single day for example, but it doesn’t have much in the game.”

One major positive for Pellegrino was the support the team were given by the Saints fans.

Towards the end of last season they were frustrated with the lack of goals, but Pellegrino enjoyed a warm welcome and a lot of patience for his team whose efforts were rewarded with warm applause as they left the pitch.

Pellegrino knows that won’t last forever, and is hoping to find some goals, and a win, when Saints host West Ham at St Mary’s next weekend.

“We are a little bit disappointed because we couldn’t win, but the fans were behind the team throughout the 90 minutes,” he said.

“They felt that the team wanted to win the game all the time.

“We are responsible to give them the best feeling, or show them that we want to win the game, we want to give everything 100 per cent on the pitch.

“It was a pity today but we have another chance next weekend and hopefully we can score and win the game.”
