Pellegrino tries not to focus on van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino admitted he “can’t manage” the Virgil van Dijk situation and has to keep focussed on the rest of his squad.

Van Dijk’s summer transfer saga is rumbling on, with the Dutch defender, who was laid low by a virus last week, still training alone after submitting a transfer request with Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City all linked with a move for him.

The 26-year-old has shown little indication he is about to back down, while Saints have stood firm in their stance that he is not for sale.

Pellegrino is in a tough situation having to deal with the problems caused by having his best player missing while also trying to give the rest of his squad the tools for success this season.

As such he is trying to keep doing the things he believes can have a positive impact.

He said: “I think we play a good game (against Swansea).

“Virgil is part of the squad and I can’t talk about something that right now is something I can’t manage as a manager.

“Hopefully, I repeat again, we are waiting him to train with the team and to be part of the team again.”

He added: “I was talking with him twice and the club was clear with him.

“I will repeat again the same.

“I think all of us, the technical director, me as a manager, we know that Virgil is an important part of the club but we need him in another way.”

It is believed that van Dijk did not attend the opening day goalless draw at home to Swansea.

Also missing from the starting line-ups was Swansea’s best player, Gylfi Sigurdsson.

He is also involved in a transfer battle as he hopes to complete a move to Everton, though the two clubs have been unable to agree a fee despite Swans boss Paul Clement saying he believed a deal is moving closer.

Pellegrino was asked whether it is fair on supporters that they pay their money but don’t get to see the best players in action because of these sort of problems and replied: “I am responsible to train the team to try to achieve the best performance possible, but I can’t manage other situations like some player aside the team.

“It is not my responsibility about that.

“It is a pity because the people deserve to see the best players on the pitch.

“It is realistic but this happens and we have to keep going.”

Frustrated Tadic urges Saints to be more clinical

Show/hide article…

A FRUSTRATED Dusan Tadic has called for Saints to be more clinical in front of goal after drawing a record-breaking blank at St Mary’s against Swansea.

The opening day goalless draw meant that Saints have gone a club-record six games without scoring a league goal in front of their own fans.

“We were knocking on the door, we gave our best,” said Tadic, who missed a close range chance in the first half.

"We created lots of chances and we deserved to win it.

"It’s normal that you’re frustrated, but this is football. Sometimes you create lots of chances and you don’t score any goals. Sometimes you create two chances and you score two chances. It’s just like that.

"You just try to do your best and be dangerous and solid at the back. We now just need to turn to the next game and that’s it.

“We had enough chances to score a goal and if we scored it would have been a totally different game and then we would have scored a second,” he continued. "But we didn’t do it and we need to try again.

"When we’re in front of goal we just need to be clinical and more aggressive to score a goal.

“Fabianski (Swansea’s goalkeeper Lukasz) made some great saves and you need to give him credit for that.”

Chelsea transfers: Willing to pay £60m for Sandro, Van Dijk bid considered, Rose interest

Show/hide article…

The Blues are short of options and got the defence of their Premier League title off to a nightmare start yesterday when Burnley claimed a shock 3-2 win at Stamford Bridge.

Sandro is wanted from Juve to provide competition for Marcos Alonso on the left flank.

And according to The Telegraph, Chelsea have expressed a willingness to pay £60m to get him on board.

Danny Rose, of Tottenham, is also on their radar and it’s claimed they will swoop for the England international if Tottenham make it clear they’re ready to sell.

We’ve got to be more clinical, says Davis

Show/hide article…

Manolo Gabbadini came closest to scoring when his first-half header bounced clear off the Swansea woodwork, but despite continued pressure Saints were unable to find a way through.

“I think we’ve got a bit frustrated today,” started Davis.

“I think in terms of the performance it was very good. We controlled the game for large parts and created a number of good chances.

“But obviously we’ve got to be more clinical in front of goal and take those chances when they come.”

Although Saints were unable to take all three points at St Mary’s, Davis believes there were a number of positives to take from the opening game of the season.

“The manager wanted us to go and show our desire and work-rate, which we did throughout the game,” he continued.

“We tried to put pressure on them high up the pitch like the fans are used to seeing over a number of seasons.

“So it was a positive start in many aspects, but we are really disappointed not to take all three points.”

Southampton have an ace up their sleeve in bid to keep Virgil van Dijk

Show/hide article…

Southampton are confident they will win their war with Virgil van Dijk – because of the World Cup.

The £60million-rated Holland star defender has submitted a transfer request this week but that was immediately rejected by the Saints.

And the stand-off between the pair is set to continue with boss Mauricio Pellegrino unlikely to select a player who has admitted not being in a mentally fit state to take to the field.

Van Dijk has been missing since the end of January anyway with injury but Southampton’s stance has remained consistent.

And they believe the player will be the first one to blink when the transfer window slams shut in just over three weeks’ time.

Saints are hoping to re-integrate the former Celtic defender once it becomes clear that they are standing by their promise to keep him at St Mary’s – for this season at least.

But the ace up the club’s sleeve is next year’s World Cup finals tournament in Russia.

A source said: “For three years out of every four, the player holds the upper hand in cases such as these.

“In the other one, the club does – as any player worth his salt wants to go to the World Cup.

"That’s the reason why Southampton are so confident that Van Dijk will eventually return to the fold.”

Ironically, the Netherlands are facing a desperate scrap with France and Sweden to qualify for the top two spots in Group A.

The picture should become a lot clearer following the next set of fixtures – internationals that Van Dijk will miss because he is not playing for his club side.
