Bertrand: England will not be in awe of Brazil

Show/hide article…

Ryan Bertrand is confident England’s inexperienced side can go toe to toe with Brazil at Wembley and cause the five-time world champions problems.

England have beaten Brazil just once in the past 25 years and face a side boasting Neymar, Gabriel Jesus and Philippe Coutinho.

Coach Gareth Southgate is without a number of first-choice players like Harry Kane and Dele Alli but Bertrand believes England’s three-at-the-back system will bring the best out of the side.

An inexperienced team earned a 0-0 with Germany on Friday but the left-back feels they can do even better tonight.

Bertrand said: “Brazil have massive global names but equally we are littered with names as well.

“So we won’t be in awe of Brazil. Yes they have Neymar and the others but with all due respect, when we cross that line, we are all even.

“We are playing with three at the back and when we play that, we provide more of a problem for teams. We keep the ball a lot more and create chances.”

Southgate is restoring veterans Gary Cahill and Joe Hart to the starting line-up but is still keeping youth in the side. Ruben Loftus-Cheek, man of the match against Germany, will earn a second cap in midfield and 20-year-old Marcus Rashford is up front.

Shane Long should start for Republic of Ireland against Denmark, says Shay Given

Shay Given thinks the Republic of Ireland should start Shane Long up front in Tuesday’s crucial World Cup play-off against Denmark, live on Sky Sports Football from 7pm.

Long came off the bench in Saturday’s goalless draw in Copenhagen and although the Southampton striker has failed to find the net since February, Given believes his pace will cause problems for the Danish defence.

“Daryl Murphy has done well in the last few games but Long has the pace to stretch Denmark and get us further up the pitch,” Given told Sky Sports News.

"We didn’t keep the ball well enough in the first leg, Martin [O’Neill] said as much. We need to be a bit braver on the ball and keep it better when we do win it back.

“It’s going to be a tense, nervous night. There is so much at stake and it all comes down to 90 minutes, or maybe longer with extra-time and penalties.”

Given, who started every game in goal when Ireland last qualified for the World Cup in 2002, has been impressed by current goalkeeper Darren Randolph and his back four, who are seeking a fourth successive clean sheet.

“Darren has been fantastic since taking the No 1 jersey,” said Given, who won 134 caps for his country. "Even in the first leg he didn’t have loads to do but he still made a big double save in the first half.

“He brings a real calmness to the back four and to the team.”

However, Given says Ireland must show more ambition in attack if they are to seize “the chance of a lifetime” and reach Russia 2018.

"They need to be a bit more expansive going forward but I don’t think they’re going to be gung-ho from the start.

“It’ll be a nervy night in Dublin but I wish the lads well and hope they can get the job done.”

Bednarek helps Poland to victory

Show/hide article…

The Danes had won their previous five games, topping the group standings on 12 points, but were kept at bay by Bednarek and co until a consolation in stoppage time.

They fielded a strong side, which included Ajax forward Kasper Dolberg, but fell behind after just 14 minutes when Konrad Michalak fired beyond Leicester City keeper Daniel Iversen.

The hosts doubled the advantage before half-time when Pawel Tomczyk was alert to capitalise on a defensive error as Victor Nelson’s pass back evaded the onrushing keeper to leave him with a simple finish.

Captain Szymon Żurkowski added a third with a quarter of an hour to go with a powerful low effort on his left foot which found the bottom left corner.

Bednarek almost scored with a glancing header as well as marshalling a three-man defence in a resolute display.

A minute into additional time, Robert Skov’s corner was converted by substitute Nicolai Laursen to pull a goal back.

van Dijk features in Romania win

Show/hide article…

It took until the second-half to break the hosts down, but after good work from Steven Berghuis, Memphis Depay netted at the back post with a header for his second goal in as many games.

Berghuis was again the architect on 56 minutes when his right-wing cross was prodded home by Ryan Babel; his first international goal since May 2008.

It was a hat-trick of assists for the Feyenoord wide man when Luuk de Jong headed home his free-kick late on.
