Van Dijk’s Anfield target

Show/hide article…

VIRGIL van Dijk can help Saints thwart Liverpool’s celebrated attack for a fifth successive game at Anfield on Saturday – and show his Merseyside admirers exactly what they missed out on in the summer.

The 26-year-old centre-back wanted nothing more back in the transfer window than to be on the other side of this fixture, having tried but failed to force a move to the Reds.

Liverpool mucked up their approach for the Dutchman, and were forced in to an embarrassing climbdown and apology after Saints reported them to the Premier League for an illegal approach.

Despite Van Dijk later handing in a transfer request and months of speculation over a £70m move, his switch to Liverpool failed to materialise.

Now, Van Dijk, who said he’s giving “100 per cent for” Mauricio Pellegrino’s men, is in line to play against Jurgen Klopp’s side, which has been unable to get past Saints in four consecutive meetings in all competitions.

Although, making it five in a row may be difficult, with the Reds’ attack in fine fettle.

The combination of Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino, Phil Coutinho and ex-Saint Sadio Mane has struck fear into opposition defenders this term, most recently smacking four past West Ham.

Liverpool are the third highest scorers in the Premier League this term with 21 goals, too.

Record signing Salah alone has scored 12 goals in all competitions and although the Anfield outfit have been accused of being wasteful in front of goal, this is a forward line that will test Saints’ and Van Dijk’s mettle.

Pellegrino’s men might well find it hard to keep them out, but Van Dijk will no doubt be eager to impress and Saints’ misfiring attack could have some luck against the hosts’ shaky backline.

Liverpool’s defence has been vulnerable, having shipped 17 goals and has suffered demoralising defeats against Manchester City (5-0) and Tottenham (4-1). They have conceded six more goals than Saints.

Against Spurs, Klopp hauled former Saints defender Dejan Lovren off after 31 minutes following an embarrassing undressing by England striker Harry Kane.

Klopp later said he could have defended better “in his trainers”.

Certainly, Liverpool are feeling the consequences of missing out on Van Dijk in the summer and could feel that even more if Saints are able to keep another clean sheet in this one.

Last season, both league matches ended in goalless draws, while Saints famously defeated the Reds 2-0 on aggregate in the League Cup semi-final double header.

Van Dijk played two of those matches, but suffered a long-term injury just before the semi-final second leg, with Jack Stephens and Maya Yoshida producing a heroic display at the back in the Anfield decider. He also missed the Premier League 0-0 draw on Merseyside in May.

These matches were against a Liverpool attack without its new talisman Salah, who made a £37m move from Roma in June, and he could well be the difference at Anfield on Saturday.

Long suffers Denmark disappointment

Show/hide article…

Martin O’Neill’s men got off to a dream start in front of an Aviva Stadium at fever pitch when Robbie Brady’s deep free-kick saw Nicolai Jorgensen inadvertently flick the ball up, and Shane Duffy headed beyond Kasper Schmeichel.

But the lead only lasted until the 29th minute, when Andreas Christensen’s effort bobbled over the line off Cyrus Christie after superb work from Pione Sisto down the left.

Things went from bad to worse a few minutes later when a counter-attack saw Christian Eriksen show his class, firing an unstoppable effort off the underside of the bar.

Ireland made a double change at the break, introducing Aiden McGeady and Wes Hoolahan to the action knowing they needed at least two more goals to qualify for the finals in Russia.

The Danish dominance showed little signs of relenting though, and Eriksen doubled his personal tally for the evening when he collected Sisto’s pass, before driving at goal and curling an inch-perfect effort beyond the grasp of Darren Randolph.

And a fine hat-trick was completed when he pounced upon Stephen Ward’s poor clearance saw the ball break into space for the Tottenham man to hammer the ball into the top-right corner.

Long had a chance to reduce the arrears with ten minutes to go, before Nicklas Bendtner sealed things with a late penalty.

Bertrand helps shut out Brazil

Show/hide article…

The Saints full-back was one of five changes made by Gareth Southgate after the stalemate with Germany and the Three Lions registered consecutive clean sheets but weren’t able to penetrate Brazil.

Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho struck the base of the post with a quarter of an hour to go, before Dominic Solanke was denied by a stunning save from keeper Allison.

Bertrand was withdrawn on 80 minutes to be replaced by Ashley Young, and will now return to the club to prepare for Saturday’s meeting with Liverpool.

Premier League questions: Will Romelu Lukaku end drought? Can Mauricio Pochettino do it at a ‘big six’ side?

Show/hide article…

Premier League questions: Will Romelu Lukaku end drought? Can Mauricio Pochettino do it at a ‘big six’ side?

The Premier League is back and we have a question for every game.

Arsenal v Tottenham kicks off the action on Saturday, live on Sky Sports Premier League, before Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City are all in action on a busy Saturday fixture list.

David Moyes takes charge of West Ham for the first time on Sunday against Watford, which is live on Super Sunday, and Brighton host Stoke City on Monday Night Football.

Can Pochettino do it on the road against a top-six rival? (Arsenal v Tottenham, Sky Sports Premier League from 11.30am on Saturday)

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has been lavished with praise for his work progressing Spurs into a genuine force, yet one area continues to hold them back. Under Pochettino, Spurs have a miserable record against the fellow ‘big six’ when playing away from home, winning just one of his 16 matches in charge.

No side has won more Premier League away games in 2017 than Tottenham (10), while the Lilywhites have also scored a league-high 37 goals on the road in this calendar year, which makes their struggles on the road against the big teams even more of a conundrum.

The chances of improving their record this weekend at The Emirates does look plausible though as Pochettino has led Spurs to three consecutive 1-1 draws in this fixture and remains unbeaten against Arsene Wenger in north London derbies.

Can Man City make it six of the best away from home? (Leicester v Man City, Saturday, 3pm)

Pep Guardiola’s rampaging side roll into Leicester on Saturday afternoon with the hope of maintaining their outrageous start to the Premier League campaign. City are bidding to become only the second team to win their first six away games in a Premier League campaign, after Chelsea in 2008-09 (won their first eight).

However, Leicester look revitalised under Claude Puel and have won two of their last three Premier League meetings with City, including a 4-2 win in this exact fixture last campaign, where Jamie Vardy netted his first and only Premier League hat-trick.

Will Tony Pulis hold back the turning tide from his own supporters against Chelsea? (West Brom v Chelsea, Saturday, 3pm)

The last team Tony Pulis would have wanted to welcome this weekend would’ve been Chelsea.

Pulis, whose West Brom side are winless in their last nine, has lost 12 Premier League games as a manager against Chelsea, including the last two meetings at The Hawthorns.

Many West Brom fans have made their feelings clear about the lack of imagination shown by Pulis, who has been in charge since 2015. Along with chants for him to go in their recent defeat at Huddersfield, banners reading “Pulis out” and “Do one Tony” were seen at the Grand Slam of Darts during the week in nearby Wolverhampton.

Can Virgil van Dijk impress in front of the watching Jurgen Klopp? (Liverpool v Southampton, Saturday, 3pm)

Liverpool had trouble breaking down Southampton’s defence last season. The two sides met four times in all competitions with Liverpool failing to win and score in all four contests (W0 D2 L2). Saints centre-half Virgil van Dijk played in two of those games and his influence on the team is growing following a turbulent period of injuries and transfer speculation.

He’s likely to start at Anfield, which will give him a chance to show Jurgen Klopp what he missed out on after talks broke down between the two clubs over a £50million transfer.

Can goal-shy Tom Ince turn chances into goals for Huddersfield? (Bournemouth v Huddersfield, Saturday, 3pm)

Despite their fantastic start to life in the Premier League, goals have been hard to come by for Huddersfield, especially on the road. Since winning their first ever Premier League away game 3-0 against Crystal Palace, the Terriers have failed to score in their subsequent four away days.

It’s not through the want of trying though.

No player has had more shots without scoring in the Premier League this season than Huddersfield’s Tom Ince (27 including blocked, level with Nathan Redmond). The winger has started every Premier League game since moving from Derby County in the summer and surely isn’t far away from matching his high energy performances with goals for David Wagner’s well-drilled side.

Will England international Jack Cork show Swansea what their missing? (Burnley v Swansea, Saturday, 3pm)

Jack Cork earned his first senior England cap last Friday against Germany at Wembley - showcasing just how much his influence has played a part in Burnley’s strong start to the season.

Cork was snapped up for £10million from Swansea in the summer by Sean Dyche as Paul Clement replaced him with midfielders Roque Mesa, Sam Clucas and Renato Sanches, who have all struggled to make their mark.

Swansea toiled in their previous fixture at home to Brighton, losing 1-0 in front of a disgruntled Liberty Stadium, where a lack of bite in midfield was clear to see. Cork will be hoping to win that battle this weekend.

Is time running out already for Palace? (Crystal Palace v Everton, Saturday, 3pm)

If Crystal Palace suffer defeat on Saturday, they’ll equal the record for fewest points after 12 games in a Premier League season. The current record stands at just four points, currently held by Everton in 1994/95 and QPR in 2012/13.

However, despite sitting bottom of the table with just four points, there is reason for hope. Palace will have felt aggrieved to have left Wembley pointless in their last game against Tottenham after spurning a number of presentable chances, while third-choice Tottenham goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga was also called upon to make several impressive saves.

Their attacking intent is demonstrated by the fact Palace have the eighth highest expected goals tally so far (13.81).

Will Romelu Lukaku end his goal drought against the Toon? (Manchester United v Newcastle, Saturday, 5.30pm)

After scoring 11 goals in his first 10 games for United, Lukaku has since gone seven without a goal, firing in just five shots on target in this period as Jose Mourinho’s men have lost their mojo slightly.

Lukaku looked in good shape for Belgium over the international break, scoring twice in a friendly win over Mexico. He feels the reason the goals have dried up is due to a lack of service.

“Lately we haven’t performed like we did at the start of the season, we started by blowing teams away, being dominant and creating chances,” Lukaku told Sky Sports.

“But in the last few weeks we didn’t play at the same level and that made it more difficult for me.”

Who can return to form after a tricky few weeks as David Moyes returns to the Premier League? (Watford v West Ham, Super Sunday, live on Sky Sports Premier League 4pm)

David Moyes is back, and though a trip to Vicarage Road may have been a daunting task a few weeks back, West Ham have a few reasons to be hopeful going into Super Sunday.

After a strong start to the season, Watford have picked up zero points from their past three, while West Ham have only earned one, meaning Saturday takes on extra importance as we approach the busy winter period.

The Hammers need a win, and fast. Their December looks daunting, with Man City, Arsenal (twice) and Tottenham all to play before the new year, meaning Sunday is just about West Ham’s biggest game of the season.

Can Brighton consolidate a place in the top half? (Brighton v Stoke, Monday Night Football, live on Sky Sports Premier League, 8pm)

Having won two out of three and gone four unbeaten, Chris Hughton’s Brighton have lifted themselves to the heady heights of eighth in their first Premier League season.

But as we’ve seen plenty of times before, a strong start for newly-promoted side does not guarantee safety come May, and Hughton will be desperate to prolong his side’s good form well into the winter.

They host Stoke on MNF, who are on a mini-revival after some poor results in September and October, and a win for Mark Hughes’ side could see them jump up into the top half.

QK Southampton ready for glamour tie against Saints

Show/hide article…

QK Southampton will be flying the flag for the Hampshire Premier League when they take on Saints U23s in the Southampton Senior Cup tonight.

The third-round tie at Staplewood has captured the imagination of a QK side ready to take on a Saints team that beat BTC Southampton 6-0 in the last round, courtesy of goals from Armani Little (two), Dan N’Lundulu, Tom O’Connor, Tyreke Johnson and Will Ferry.

That was Saints’ first appearance in the Southampton Senior Cup since 1970, having re-entered the competition in celebration of its centenary.

Manager Mark Sainsbury said: “We’ve had a few more at training since the draw!

“Our squad has an average age of 21-22 and eight of them could hold their own in the Wessex Premier.

“Most of them were brought in from Stoneham Under-18s when I took over as manager four years ago.”

QK are currently sixth in the New Forest Care Hampshire Premier League and won 7-0 against Hartley Wintney in the Hampshire Intermediate Cup on Saturday.

“When I first took over four years ago we lost eight on the trot but finished 12th, sixth and last season we reached a cup final and made the top five,” continued Sainsbury.

“This year we’re ready to win something but I don’t believe it will be the Southampton Senior Cup - this will be our cup final!

“A couple of our players were on Saints’ books as youngsters before being released at a young age.

“It’s a great opportunity for them to show what QK are about. We’ll be ourselves and get it down and play.

“Southampton will be much fitter than us but I believe we can give them something to think about rather than go with a defensive mindset.

“The lads are buzzing for it. We’ve really pushed them hard on the fitness and all this preparation has raised the bar for two more important games - in the league against Clanfield on Saturday and a league cup quarter-final against Bush Hill a week later.”

Sainsbury, whose son Lee is QK’s goalkeeper, used to coach injured Saints’ defender Jake Flannigan for Colden Commons Under-7s.

The star of his QK team is Callum Drake, scorer of both goals in the 2-0 second-round win against Bush Hill reserves.

He said: “Callum is the jewel in our side. He’s turned down four or five approaches from Wessex Premier sides and teams from the Southern League have had a look at him.

“But he’s been very loyal and will be making his 100th appearance for us at Staplewood.

“He plays as a [number] ten. He’s not great pace but is very good at finding pockets of space.

“He has great awareness and beats players with his first touch. I’ve got a sneaky feeling that if he plays as well he might even get invited back for a trial!”

Tonight’s tie is not open to the general public.

How did Arsenal and Tottenham players fare on international duty ahead of the North London derby?

Show/hide article…

How did Arsenal and Tottenham players fare on international duty ahead of the North London derby?

We look at how Arsenal and Tottenham players fared on international duty ahead of the North London derby on Sky Sports Premier League.

From match-winning performances to fresh injury concerns, Arsenal and Spurs players were at the heart of the action over the international weekend.

As we count down to Saturday’s lunch-time kick-off, live on Sky Sports Premier League from 11.30am, we look at which players could miss out, and who will be heading to the Emirates in a buoyant mood…

Olivier Giroud scored in France’s 2-0 friendly win over Wales at the Stade De France, though he was sent back to Arsenal after suffering a thigh injury. Laurent Koscielny helped the hosts keep a clean sheet in that match, while Aaron Ramsey started for Wales.

In Giroud’s absence, Alexandre Lacazette then scored twice in France’s 2-2 friendly draw with Germany on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Granit Xhaka played both legs as Switzerland secured a 1-0 aggregate victory to reach the World Cup at the expense of Northern Ireland.

Mesut Ozil played all 90 minutes in both Germany’s 0-0 draw with England on Friday and the 2-2 draw with France on Tuesday.

Eddie Nketiah scored the winner as England Under-19s beat Iceland 2-1 in European U19 Championship qualifying. Alex Iwobi scored twice as Nigeria beat Argentina 4-2 in a friendly on Tuesday.

Mohamed Elneny travelled to Ghana with Egypt, and started in Sunday’s 1-1 draw in the World Cup Qualifier.

Christian Eriksen scored a hat-trick as Denmark came from behind to end the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup dream with an emphatic 5-1 play-off win in Dublin.

Eric Dier captained England for the first time in their 0-0 draw at home to Wembley - doing so again in the 0-0 draw against Brazil. Kieran Trippier and Danny Rose both started against Germany, while the latter came off the bench for in the Brazil game.

Dele Alli did not feature in the England squad after picking up a hamstring problem, while Harry Kane and Harry Winks were withdrawn due to injury. Kane has been declared fit for Saturday’s derby, although doubts remain over whether Alli and Winks will feature.

Jan Vertonghen sat out of Belgium’s 3-3 friendly draw with Mexico due to injury, but returned for the 1-0 victory over Japan. Mousa Dembele played the second half in both matches.

Heung-Min Son scored both goals as South Korea ran out 2-1 winners in a friendly against Colombia, who had Davinson Sanchez in their starting line-up. Sanchez also starred in Colombia’s 4-0 win over China on Tuesday.

Ben Davies started for Wales in their 2-0 friendly defeat at France on Friday, while he played the opening 45 minutes of Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Panama.

Serge Aurier will not be playing at the World Cup after Ivory Coast failed to qualify following a 2-0 defeat to Morocco. Moussa Sissoko was an unused sub in both of France’s games against Wales and Germany.

Here’s a round-up of how players from other Premier League teams fared…

Nathan Ake started in defence as the Netherlands beat Scotland 1-0 in a friendly. Ryan Fraser came off the bench for Scotland. Ake featured again in their 3-3 draw with Russia on Tuesday.

Harry Arter started both legs for the Republic of Ireland against Denmark, who romped to a 5-1 victory on Tuesday night to break Irish hearts.

Goalkeeper Mat Ryan kept a clean sheet as Australia drew 0-0 at Honduras in their World Cup play-off first leg, while the Socceroos went on to book their spot in Russia with a 3-1 win on Wednesday.

Shane Duffy scored the opening goal for the Republic of Ireland against Denmark, but the Irish ended up losing 5-1 to see their World Cup dream end.

Davy Propper started for the Netherlands in their 3-3 friendly draw with Russia on Tuesday.

Jack Cork made his senior debut for England after coming on as a late substitute in the 0-0 draw with Germany at Wembley.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson played the first half of Iceland’s 2-1 friendly loss at home to Czech Republic. Sam Vokes played the majority of Wales’ 2-0 defeat to France on Friday, before missing a penalty in the 1-1 draw with Panama on Tuesday.

Stephen Ward, Jeff Hendrick and Robbie Brady all started for the Republic of Ireland in both legs against Denmark in the 5-1 play-off defeat which ended their World Cup dream.

Chelsea suffered a double blow as Tiemoue Bakayoko (France) and Michy Batshuayi (Belgium) were sent home after injuries in training.

Eden Hazard scored Belgium’s opening goal in a 3-3 friendly draw with Mexico, with Thibaut Courtois also starting in goal. Hazard also played in Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Japan.

Alvaro Morata netted for Spain as they beat Costa Rica 5-0 in a friendly.

Willian captained Brazil and was involved the third goal finished off by Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus in a 3-1 friendly win over Japan. Antonio Rudiger started for Germany in their 0-0 draw with England at Wembley.

Mason Mount scored the opening goal from a free-kick as England Under-19s beat Iceland 2-1 in European U19 Championship qualifying.

Andreas Christensen played all 90 minutes of Denmark’s second leg play-off against the Republic of Ireland, as they secured a spot in the World Cup with a 5-1 win.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek put in a man-of-the-match performance as England held world champions Germany to a goalless draw on Friday evening. He then hobbled off in the 0-0 draw with Brazil on Tuesday.

On-loan defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah started for the Netherlands as they beat Scotland 1-0 in a friendly. Wayne Hennessey started in goal for Wales as they lost 2-0 to France.

Wilfried Zaha will not be playing at the World Cup after Ivory Coast failed to qualify following a 2-0 defeat to Morocco.

Jordan Pickford started for England ahead of Joe Hart in their friendly with Germany on Friday, playing all 90 minutes and keeping a clean sheet in the 0-0 draw.

Ashley Williams captained Wales as they fell to a 2-0 defeat at France on Friday evening.

Gylfi Sigurdsson captained Iceland in their 1-1 friendly draw with 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar on Tuesday.

Aaron Mooy played all 90 minutes in Australia’s 0-0 first-leg draw away to Honduras - and the Socceroos went on to book their spot in Russia with a 3-1 win on Wednesday.

Harry Maguire and Jamie Vardy started in both of England’s 0-0 friendly draws at home to Germany and Brazil. Andy King started for Wales in their 2-0 defeat away to France.

Kasper Schmeichel played both legs as Denmark booked their spot in the World Cup with a 5-1 play-off victory over the Republic of Ireland.

Kelechi Iheanacho scored Nigeria’s opening goal as they enjoyed a 4-2 friendly win over Argentina on Tuesday. Wilfred Ndidi played all 90 minutes in the clash.

Joe Gomez put in a man-of-the-match performance on his full England debut in the 0-0 draw with Brazil. That came after he replaced the injured Phil Jones after 25 minutes to make his senior England debut in the 0-0 draw with Germany. Emre Can also came off the bench for the world champions.

Philippe Coutinho started in Brazil’s match against England at Wembley, while Roberto Firmino came off the bench. Dominic Solanke also made his senior debut for England as a substitute.
