Southampton star Oriol Romeu desperate to find some consistency ahead of tough fixture run

Show/hide article…

ORIOL Romeu is desperate for Saints to find some consistency after a frustrating start to the campaign.

Saints sit 13th having failed to capitalise on a very kind early fixture list and now head in to a very difficult period until the end of the year, starting at Liverpool on Saturday.

“We’ve got harder games coming up and it will be difficult to get points from that, but we don’t want to say that’s impossible,” he said.

“If you ask me one week I can tell you we are very close and the next week we are too far away,” he added, when asked how far away he believes Saints are from really clicking.

“The problem is not being consistent with our performances and that’s what doesn’t give us that improvement line we should get.

“We’re not feeling we are doing bad performances but we would like to get more consistency in our games and in our style of play.

“We don’t want to just have 20 or 30 good minutes when we are feeling good.

“We wish we could score two or three goals every game and be offensive.

“But we must stay on top of the game. Whether we’re winning or losing we need to stick with our plan.”

Romeu admits that the games against Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham will be very difficult challenges but should not just be written off as defeats already.

Saints start this run with a trip to Anfield, before facing Everton at St Mary’s prior to a trip to the Etihad Stadium to play the irrepressible City.

“The games after [the international break] will be harder but we’ll have a chance to win,” he said. “But it will be harder because those team give you less mistakes to win.

“And as soon as you do something wrongly they will punish you and that’s going to be harder.

“And winning these games, like last weekend and the weekend before, are not easier but we have bigger chances.

“Hopefully we can win the games we think are winnable and hopefully we can face the harder games with less pressure be able to play more.”

Fresh injury woe for Sadio Mane ahead of Saints reunion at Anfield

Show/hide article…

Sadio Mane is a massive doubt to face his former club Saints this weekend after suffering fresh injury woe.

The Liverpool attacker has returned home early from international duty after reporting a new issue with the hamstring injury from which he has just recovered.

The 25-year-old played in Friday’s win over South Africa which secured World Cup qualification.

After that, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp had hoped Mane, who travelled to Polokwane with a member of Liverpool’s physiotherapy department to oversee his recovery, would be released early.

The German’s wish has been granted, but he is worried about his £34m man.

“Obviously it is a concern that the hamstring injury is again on the agenda and it will be critical for us to monitor and manage that in the coming days,” the German said.

“At this stage we haven’t seen Sadio yet to properly assess the extent, but what is clear is that we will have to stay on top of this for the rest of the week and make sure we are careful in how we look after him.

“There has been really strong communication between ourselves and the Senegal team management to ensure the player is properly protected and looked after. We respect how important he is for Senegal and therefore it must always be the case that they get to make the decision when he is under their care.

“It should not be forgotten in Liverpool, either, how important it is to Sadio that he represents his country whenever he is fit enough to do so. He is so proud of his country and recognises what a role model he is for them.

“So, in this moment all I can really say with certainty is that we will assess Sadio as soon as he lands back in the country and make decisions on what rehab and treatment gives him the best chance of being back fit and strong for the important fixtures we have coming.”

Mane only returned from the hamstring injury, sustained on international duty last month, which sidelined him for five matches prior to the Premier League win over West Ham on November 4, immediately before joining up with his national team.

Suspension and injury has so far limited Mane to just five starts in Liverpool’s 11 league games so far, but he has still managed three goals in that time.

There is further bad news for Klopp regarding another of his ex-Saints contingent, Nathaniel Clyne.

The right back has potentially been ruled out for three more months after undergoing surgery on a back problem.

The England international has not featured all season because of the issue and faces a further lay-off after he had an operation yesterday.

His problem was always viewed as long-term as he was left out of Liverpool’s Champions League squad submitted to UEFA at the start of the season - and a three-month lay-off could mean he misses out again when the window opens for amendments in January.

It puts added pressure youngsters Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez, who have been sharing the right-back duties in Clyne’s absence.

Klopp has managed the situation carefully and is reluctant to play one or the other in back-to-back games but with 12 matches between now and the turn of the year he may find he has no choice.

Reds captain Jordan Henderson, who last week pulled out of England’s matches against Germany and Brazil because of a thigh problem which forced him to miss the win over West Ham, did not train with Klopp’s first team yesterday.

Another ex-Saint, midfielder Adam Lallana, has yet to play this season due to a thigh injury of his own. He is, however, pencilled in to play some part in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Melwood oday.

The club is committed to making sure disabled supporters enjoy a fully-inclusive experience at St Mary’s Stadium, with the club having taken a number of strides to improve accessibility for fans and visitors.

Saints are in the top quartile of Premier League clubs for accessibility, recently creating a new Changing Places facility, as well as a Sensory Room, while also providing additional wheelchair spaces, in among a host of other improvements.

However, the club would still like to do more, and is looking to hear feedback from supporters on how it could further enhance its facilities.

The forum will take place this Thursday, from 2pm until 4pm at the Virgin Media Hub, which can be found in the Kingsland Stand, at St Mary’s.

If you feel you could contribute, either by attending in person, posing a question for discussion or by providing feedback for staff, please contact the club’s Supporter Relations team via supporterrelations@saintsfc.co.uk or by calling 02380 711980.

Long set for huge World Cup play-off in Dublin

Show/hide article…

Republic of Ireland earned a valuable 0-0 draw in Copenhagen to bring back to Dublin for the second leg, with Long introduced on the 74th minute in that tightly-contested encounter.

Earlier in the day, Jan Bednarek is in the Poland Under-21 squad as they meet Denmark in a European Championship qualifier (5pm GMT), hoping to build on their 2-2 draw with the Faroe Islands.

Virgil van Dijk is likely to start for Netherlands as they travel to Romania for their latest international friendly (7pm GMT).

van Dijk played the full 90 minutes and helped his side to a clean sheet in the 1-0 success over Scotland, which came courtesy of a Memphis Depay strike.

Maya Yoshida’s Japan are also in friendly action away from home against Belgium at Jan Breydel Stadium in a 7.45pm kick-off.

Finally, England go head-to-head with Brazil at Wembley (8pm GMT) with Saints full-back Ryan Bertrand hoping to be involved after being rested but making an appearance from the bench in the stalemate against Germany.

Stat Pack: Liverpool vs Saints

Show/hide article…

These two sides met four times in all competitions last season with Liverpool failing to win and score in all four contests (W0 D2 L2). Indeed, it was only the second time in their history that Liverpool had failed to score against a side on four occasions in a single season (also vs Leeds in 1971-72).

Southampton are unbeaten in their last five games in all competitions against Liverpool; they are aiming to go six in a row without defeat for the first time (W3 D2 L0).

The Reds haven’t failed to score against a single team in five consecutive meetings in all competitions since 1978 versus Nottm Forest.

Southampton have won the same number of points after 11 games this season as they did in 2016-17 (13) when they finished 8th.

Liverpool have conceded 30 goals via set-pieces in the Premier League since Jurgen Klopp took charge in October 2015 - only Watford (36), Stoke (32) and Crystal Palace (31) have conceded more.

Liverpool have lost only twice in their last 32 Premier League matches at Anfield (W19 D11 L2).

However, only Kenny Dalglish (1.68) has a lower points-per-game ratio for Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League than Jurgen Klopp (1.97).

Jurgen Klopp has yet to beat Southampton in the Premier League, drawing three of his four matches as Liverpool boss (W0 D3 L1) – no side has he faced more without winning (also 4 v Man Utd).

No player has scored more goals after their first 11 Premier League games for Liverpool than Mohamed Salah (7 – level with Daniel Sturridge). Only Robbie Fowler scored eight goals in his first 12 Premier League games for Liverpool.

Ex-Saint: When I said Harry Arter would reach the top, they looked at me as if I was an idiot

Show/hide article…

EX-SAINT Graham Baker – the man who helped revive Harry Arter’s career – says the Cherries star is “technically the best player I have ever witnessed”.

Baker, Arter’s manager at non-league Woking, played alongside the likes of Alan Ball, Matthew Le Tissier, Kevin Keegan and Steve Williams during two spells with Southampton.

The midfielder also made more than 100 appearances for Manchester City and was capped twice by England under-21s, writes NEIL PERRETT.

Arter will tonight hope to help the Republic of Ireland win a place at the World Cup finals in Russia – almost eight years to the day since he lined up for Baker’s Woking in a 0-0 draw at Weymouth in Conference South.

The 27-year-old played a starring role as the Boys in Green held Denmark to a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their play-off in Copenhagen on Saturday.

Capped 10 times by his adopted country, Arter was rescued from the football scrapheap by Baker and assistant Jimmy Dack after he had been released by Charlton as a teenager.

Baker said: “He was a wonderkid at Charlton but, unfortunately, he sustained an Achilles injury which put him out of the game for a while.

“They made a decision to let him go and a number of clubs wanted him. We were fortunate. We convinced him we would get back in the league in a short space of time and it happened within one season.

“I played with some superstars in my time but, technically, he was the best I ever witnessed – to coach, to manage and to play with.

“He was two footed and didn’t even know himself whether he was right or left footed, he was that good.

“He would take corners from both sides and with both feet and it was impossible to say which was best because he was brilliant with both.

“He was a fiery character and needed to be managed the right way. Hopefully, I played a very small part in his progression.”

Arter spent the 2009-10 season with Woking before a transfer tribunal ordered Cherries to cough up the princely sum of £4,000 to buy him.

Baker, now a security supervisor at Southampton docks, added: “Right from the start, I said we wouldn’t stand in his way when a league club came knocking and we were true to our word.

“At the time, Eddie Howe offered £2,000 and we both knew that was a ridiculous sum. We went to a tribunal and they doubled it to £4,000.

“I know it is easy to say now because he is there but I told everyone at the tribunal that he was a top-level footballer in the making. They all looked at me as if I was an idiot!

“I knew that if he got his head down and worked hard, he would be top-end material. He was a quality player who, the higher he went, the better he would be.

“I knew that if he was fortune to go to the right club at the right time then he would go on to reach the very top and he has proved that.

“Fair play to Eddie Howe and Bournemouth because he has been managed very well. They are the ones who deserve a lot of credit for his progression.”
