Former Saints star Alan Shearer demands answers on links between football dementia

Show/hide article…

Former England captain Alan Shearer believes more money should be invested into researching links between heading a football and dementia.

The 47-year-old has expressed his concerns about the effects heading a ball during his career may have on his long-term health and took part in BBC documentary ‘Alan Shearer: Dementia, Football and Me’ to investigate.

Shearer spoke to families of footballers affected by dementia and underwent various studies, while also looking at the brains of people who have suffered chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) from all walks of life.

Speaking on the documentary, Shearer said: "Never ever did I think that heading a football could be dangerous for me.

"There are 850,000 people in our country that are suffering from dementia, and there are a lot of footballers who are in those numbers. But… we don’t know how many and that can’t be right.

"We started the research in 2002, it’s now 2017 and it seems like we are no further forward because the same questions are still being asked.

“There’s enough money around nowadays in football, just not enough of it has been given to research. It’s about time we had more definitive answers.”

Former Luton forward Matt Tees suffers from late-stage dementia, something his wife May feels has been brought on by the repeated action of heading a football, as she explained her struggles of living with someone with the disease.

“Matt is quiet, he doesn’t talk. He doesn’t know that this is his house. That is heartbreaking for me,” she told the BBC documentary.

"I think I have learned to be strong, because I have had to be. We are in the final stages, it could be two years, it could be 10 years - nobody knows.

“There has to be (a link). I can name about eight people who have played football, in this area, who have dementia or Alzheimer’s. So that speaks volumes in my opinion.”

The former Newcastle striker looked at parts of the brain of ex-West Brom forward Jeff Astle, who died from CTE in 2002 aged 59, and whose family have campaigned to raise awareness around brain injury in football.

The Jeff Astle Foundation says it has been contacted by the families of more than 300 former players, including an increasing number ready to contribute to the creation of a ‘bank’ of donated brains to help investigate.

Dawn Astle, daughter of the former five-capped England international and founder of the foundation, told Shearer she believes football authorities are dodging responsibility for player welfare.

She added: “The PFA (Professional Footballers’ Association) only exists for player welfare - they should be screaming from the rooftops for these players. This is killing our players and this should be their priority.”

Gordon Taylor, chief executive of the players’ union, admitted he did not know how many former players have the onset of dementia but wants to improve support systems for sufferers.

He said: "I think it is the PFA’s job to look and provide support. We have said money is going to be put towards research and also respite care.

“Football has a duty to see if there is a causal link, because if there is, it could significantly increase the problems in later life then we need to look at the rules of the game and address it.”

Press Association Sport understands a major study into whether footballers are at greater risk of degenerative brain disease is set for launch in the next few weeks with the appointment of a research group, jointly commissioned by the Football Association and Professional Footballers’ Association.

International exiles train with Liverpool as Jurgen Klopp gears up for Southampton clash

Show/hide article…

LIVERPOOL have been training with a limited squad during the international break.

Several Reds stars were snapped at Melwood today, including Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Daniel Sturridge - who were both snubbed by Gareth Southgate and missed out on England selection for the games with Germany and Brazil.

Also involved in today’s session were Mohamed Salah, who asked Egypt not to call him up this month having played a key role in their World Cup qualification, and Joel Matip - who has prematurely retired from Cameroon duty following a row with the country’s football federation.

James Milner, who has retired from England duty, and previously capped but out-of-favour duo Danny Ings and Jon Flanagan were also involved.

Jurgen Klopp will be hoping the international break hasn’t taken too much momentum away from his team after they battered West Ham 4-1 in their most recent match.

They will find out at Anfield on Saturday when they take on Southampton.

7 things we spotted from Liverpool’s latest training session

Show/hide article…

Liverpool play host to Southampton next weekend, in a game their scouts have to be as prepared for as their first team.

The Reds go into the match on the back of a rampant display against West Ham, in which they battered the east London club 4-1.

At this stage it looks like they will be without Sadio Mane - despite his heroic return against the Hammers - after he suffered a recurrence of a hamstring injury.

They will also be without Jordan Henderson, who is having problems with his thigh, as well as long-term absentees Nathaniel Clyne and Adam Lallana.

But despite the gaps Liverpool have more than enough quality in their ranks to compensate - something they proved to be true in training on Monday.

Here’s seven things we spotted from the session.

He was born and bred in Egypt, so you have to feel for Mohamed Salah having to endure this pretty dismal weather that has engulfed the UK over the past week. That said, the former Roma winger, was all smiles at Melwood… well, those trousers are probably keeping him nice and warm.

If you had to put money on one Liverpool player who wouldn’t be wearing trousers or leg warmers like Salah and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain respectively, then it would almost certainly be James Milner, right?

The German was pictured chatting away to his assistant and coaches ahead of Southampton’s visit on the weekend. He will presumable prep his scouting team in a similar way, given Liverpool’s recent transfer history.

The 19-year-old is currently on loan at Carlisle, but he saw an opportunity to train alongside the Liverpool first team on Monday, and grabbed at the chance. Well, there is no better time than to try and impress your boss with your goalkeeping skills than this very moment, considering the poor form of both Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius.

Has a football manager ever looked more ‘the part’ than Klopp does leading his team onto the training ground this Monday? The Reds boss - who certainly has an aura about him - appeared in a relaxed mood for most of the session, which will no doubt rub off on his players.

For the most part Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has had his head on the ground since leaving Arsenal for Liverpool. Things haven’t quite happened for him, but he got on the scoresheet in the 4-1 win over West Ham last time out, and his luck could be turning. What’s more the 24-year-old looked happy on the ball on Monday proving once again that confidence is most certainly everything in football.

There were a number of happy faces at Melwood on Monday. Klopp was seen cracking jokes with the players, who in turn cracked jokes with each other. Liverpool’s form has improved in recent weeks following a little blip, and if the feel-good feeling within the camp continues you can expect to see Liverpool start to climb the table.

Liverpool fans can help Virgil van Dijk move to Anfield on Saturday - John Aldridge

Show/hide article…

That is the view of Reds legend John Aldridge.

The Southampton star was missed out on in the summer, despite being Jurgen Klopp’s top defensive target.

Liverpool eventually held off from making a bid after being accused of tapping up Van Dijk.

But the Dutchman’s transfer request and push for a move showed he was keen on heading to Anfield.

Van Dijk has since expressed his happiness to continue fighting at St Mary’s.

However, Aldridge points out Liverpool are still in need of his services and need to help lure him to Merseyside for longer than Saturday afternoon when he visits with Southampton (3pm).

Gabbiadini suffers play-off heartache in Milan

Show/hide article…

Trailing from the first leg 1-0, Italy were on the front foot as they pursued a response to Jakob Johansson’s solitary strike in Stockholm.

The Azzurri’s first major chance fell to Antonio Candreva, who collected a pass inside the box before firing a rising, right-footed shot over the bar.

With Saints forward Gabbiadini impressing with his link-up play and intelligent movement inside the San Siro, Italy continued to press and had another chance through Ciro Immobile shortly before half-time.

Jorginho’s incisive through ball found the Lazio forward, who saw his effort saved by Robin Olsen before Andreas Granqvist cleared off the line.

On 63 minutes, Gian Ventura made a double change with Gabbiadini being withdrawn for Andrea Belotti but a goal eluded them meaning its the first time they have failed to qualify since 1958.
