Virgil van Dijk will be ‘100 per cent’ focused against Liverpool, says Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

“He wants to improve his performances because he was injured in March and then he did not play any games. Obviously we cannot control the market and every single transfer window clubs are looking to buy our players.

“But we are looking for players to try to improve our squad too. It’s part of our job. Football today is a big business and we have to understand this.

“Now clubs are fighting in the market to find the best player and we have a lot of good players. It’s no secret that sometimes players are distracted but it’s normal.”

Southampton are currently 13th in the Premier League table after a difficult start to the campaign in which Pellegrino’s side have failed to make the most of matches against lower-ranked sides.

They now have a tough series of fixtures which include meetings with Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal within the next month.

“I think our results were irregular and over four or five games I think we deserve a little bit more,” Pellegrino said. “I think we played better than our points show in the table. Two or three points in the Premier League are massive because there are 10 or 12 teams that are usually separated by three points. We are on the right track.”

Mauricio Pellegrino will fulfill Southampton’s ‘beautiful’ ambition

Show/hide article…

'He’s a lot different to (Ronald) Koeman,’ an employee at Southampton’s Staplewood training ground says of the new manager, Mauricio Pellegrino. 'It’s not “my way or the highway”. He listens to the players.’

Sometimes, single-mindedness can be what a club needs. Koeman’s style might not be in vogue after his Everton tenure but he set two record Premier League finishes at Southampton and got them into the Europa League.

It has, however, been questioned quite how different Pellegrino is to his predecessor, Claude Puel. Southampton ruthlessly axed the Frenchman, Koeman’s replacement, last summer after a season of relative success; he made the EFL Cup final and finished eighth.

But that failed to justify an uninspiring approach. Southampton only scored one more at home (17) than bottom club Sunderland and their points tally of 46 was only six better off than Watford in 17th.

Pellegrino signed for three years after a season that mirrored Southampton’s. He guided Alaves to ninth in La Liga on their return to Spain’s top flight and reached the Copa del Rey final, which they lost 3-1 to Barcelona.

And so far, with three wins in 11 Premier League games and only nine goals, Pellegrino accepts his Southampton are yet to change shape from Puel’s.

‘The last 10 games from last season and the first 10 games in this season, more or less we have had the same problems,’ Pellegrino, speaking on a media day organised by Southampton’s main sponsor, Virgin Media, said. ‘We need a number of chances, really really high, to convert one goal.

‘At the end, in football there is no truth, there is belief. I like to dominate the game, because when you are in the opposite half I think you have more chance to win the game. When you are defending less, the opponent has less of a possibility to win.

‘I cannot imagine (Sofiane) Boufal, (Nathan) Redmond, (Manolo) Gabbiadini or Dusan Tadic running 90 minutes behind the ball. Our style of players are comfortable with the ball, close to the box. We have got a good squad but we are maybe not miles away from the others.

'Games, like Burnley, Swansea, Stoke or Manchester United, I think we deserved more… when we talk about two or three points in the Premier League, it’s massive.’

After a pedestrian start from a favourable run of fixtures, it is wondered how much time the Saints hierarchy will allow Pellegrino to cajole an improvement, especially given the nature of Puel’s exit.

Southampton enjoyed a meteoric rise from League One but nobody at the club considers that a reason to tolerate a plateau.

But Pellegrino is a winner. His name resonates across Europe from his playing days, where at Valencia he won two La Liga titles, the UEFA Cup and played in two Champions League finals, infamously missing the decisive spot-kick in the 2001 shootout with Bayern Munich.

Southampton’s ambition, he explains with a philosophical touch, is what enticed him from the Basque country.

‘When I met the technical directors, Ross (Wilson) and Les (Reed), they told me that the club wants to grow and for me, that’s the most beautiful thing in our life - to try and be better tomorrow than today.

‘But the big risk in football is to work in football. It’s like the biggest risk is to be alive, no? When you’re on the motorway, you are taking a big risk.

‘I played football from my childhood and I got the feeling of success, of failure, to lose, to draw or win. When you win, you are happy an hour and you have to train again and try to win again. When you are champion, you are happy for a day and after you have to train again to try achieve another title.’

Such determination kept star man Virgil van Dijk from joining another club Pellegrino played for, Liverpool, last summer. During a protracted saga, the Holland international handed in a transfer request, trained alone and did not play until after the window closed.

Saints head to Anfield on Saturday knowing Van Dijk wanted to be lining up against them but Pellegrino is unconcerned.

‘I don’t think it will be difficult because Virgil is focused 100 per cent on our team and is training well. He wants to improve his performances because obviously he was injured (from January) and he didn’t play any games.

'Obviously we cannot control the market and every single transfer window clubs are looking to buy our players. It’s no secret that sometimes players are distracted but it’s normal.’

Liverpool is a difficult fixture with Pellegrino still working to impose his identity on a goal-shy squad. But such is the 46-year-old’s belief in his players, he is relishing the encounter.

‘The first progress was to make all of the team ready to play and I now feel the dynamic of the training sessions is really good,’ he explains. ‘We could try to play in a different way (to score more) but for Southampton’s confidence we need to find different solutions because professionally I think the connection we all have could not get any better.

‘You have to think in the same way, whether you attack or defend because in the end everything is connected. If you defend badly, it is really difficult to attack well. If you attack badly, it’s difficult to defend.’

Pellegrino repeatedly refers to his side’s 1-0 home defeat by Manchester United in September as a source of encouragement. He feels performances of that ilk will forge a strong connection between team and fans.

‘When you have a good side in front of you, you can see how you are against one of the best teams in the Premier League. The people have to be proud of your team. They have to see that your team is doing its best every single game.

‘At full-time it is not always about the result, it is about the people’s feeling that 11 players are giving everything, every single game. Like the game against United - the crowd were really impressed with the team, but we lost. The people were happy because the crowd could see the team were giving it everything.’

Already, Pellegrino appears at ease in his surroundings. He organises - and plays, still very well - in weekly games with staff across the club. Football, he explains, has brought people from numerous walks of life together at Southampton and getting out on the pitch is the best way for them to grow closer.

‘Doctors, scouts, analysts, technical staff, the chef - there is a big team behind the team and we use this moment to try to be together. I am happy because right now I am totally out of my comfort zone. To speak with you I have to think about every single word. I’m in a different culture with different people. I love football, I love this sport that can reach different cultures - every single game around the 200 countries in the world.

‘I have everything to be happy. We have got everything that we need.’

Liverpool leaving decision over Sadio Mane to the last minute

Show/hide article…

Liverpool will make a late decision on Sadio Mane’s fitness ahead of their Anfield clash against Southampton on Saturday.

The Senegalese winger returned from international duty after helping his side to a 2-0 win over South Africa to seal their place in next summer’s World Cup having suffered a slight recurrence of an old hamstring injury, report the Liverpool Echo .

Mane was absent for a month at Anfield prior to the international break, returning ahead of schedule to help the Reds see off West Ham 4-1, before he was a part of the Senegal side who qualified for their first World Cup since 2002.

After a full 90 minutes for his country however, Mane returned to Melwood on Tuesday, with Jurgen Klopp admitting he had ‘concern’ over the situation.

But the injury is not seen as being serious and there is still hope that he might play some part in the squad on Saturday.

Mane will miss team training today and most likely tomorrow but a return on Friday could see him play some part against his old club on Saturday.

Meanwhile Adam Lallana is back in full team training and said to be “flying” as he moves towards his first appearance of the season.

The midfielder hasn’t played since the pre-season game against Atletico Madrid due to a thigh problem but a spot on the bench on Saturday looks highly possible.

A relaxed behind-closed-doors game at Melwood yesterday involved the players left behind while others were on international duty with the likes of James Milner, Joel Matip and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all involved.

Jordan Henderson was forced to pull out of the England squad and missed some team training but is improving and the ECHO understands he is expected to be in contention to play on the weekend.

Eight Liverpool players are due to report back by 1.30pm today from international duty although there are no reported problems among those who played for their nations so far.

Southampton boss reveals Virgil van Dijk’s mindset ahead of facing Liverpool

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk has been backed to show Liverpool what they are missing on Saturday following his botched move to Anfield.

The £60million-rated Dutch defender was a top target for the Reds and even went on strike in a bid to force through a move to Merseyside.

Liverpool apologised in June for their pursuit of the 26-year-old after Southampton had asked the Premier League to probe an alleged improper approach.

The centre-back saw a transfer request rejected and has since been reintegrated into Mauricio Pellegrino’s squad after spending time training on his own.

Van Dijk remains on Jurgen Klopp’s radar as the Liverpool boss looks to strengthen his defensive ranks in January.

However, Saints chief Pellegrino insists the ex-Celtic star is fully focused on the job in hand ahead of the trip to Anfield.

Speaking on behalf of Southampton’s main sponsor Virgin Media , he said: “I don’t think it will be difficult because Virgil knows he is focused 100 per cent on our team and is training well. He wants to improve his performances because obviously he was injured in March and then he didn’t play any games.

"Obviously we cannot control the [transfer] market and every single transfer window clubs are looking to buy our players. But we are looking for players to try to improve our squad too. It’s part of our job.

"Football today is a big business – and we have to understand this. Now clubs are fighting in the market to find the best player and we have a lot of good players – it’s part of our job. It’s no secret that sometimes players are distracted but it’s normal.”

Pellegrino spent six months on Merseyside during the latter years of his playing career.

The defender made 12 appearances for the Reds but missed their Champions League triumph because he was cup-tied.

However, he insists sentiment will go out of the window as the Saints look to get back to winning ways.

“It’s a special place for me. I have good memories of this club as a player," he said.

“I wanted to stay at Anfield, yes, but I was a little bit old. I was 33 and came here to replace one position but Rafa Benitez told me he decided to bring in another player younger than me because his contract was long. He knew that I was at the end of my career.

“It was a wonderful moment in my life but in this case I would like to win the game.”

Pellegrino has come under fire from sections of the St Mary’s support after a stuttering start to his Southampton career.

But the Argentine is refusing to buckle under the pressure as he looks to improve their fortunes.

He added: "Everything is a risk but I enjoy the profession and results are part of job, from being 10 all I wanted to do is work in football.

“I feel a big responsibility because my job has a lot of people in charge and I am responsible for my players and how we are playing and training and preforming. We cannot control the results and that is part of life.”

Virgil van Dijk is 100% focused ahead of Liverpool game, says boss Mauricio Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino says wantaway defender Virgil van Dijk will be 100 per cent focused on this weekend’s trip to Liverpool.

The 26-year-old would rather be emerging from the home dressing room at Anfield this Saturday after making his desire to join Jurgen Klopp’s men clear.

But, having seen several players enticed away in recent years, Southampton dug in their heels and kept hold of Van Dijk despite the player’s public transfer request towards the end of a messy summer.

Liverpool had to apologise in June for “any misunderstanding” surrounding their interest in the defender, saying they had dropped their interest after the Saints asked the Premier League to investigate an alleged improper approach.

It is quite the backdrop as Van Dijk prepares to line up at Anfield on Saturday, but Saints manager Pellegrino has no doubts about the centre-back’s mentality.

“I don’t think it will be difficult because Virgil knows he is focused 100 per cent on our team and is training well,” he said.

“He wants to improve his performances because obviously he was injured in (January) and then he didn’t play any games.”

Mauricio Pellegrino shoots down Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool transfer talk

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino says wantaway defender Virgil van Dijk will be 100 per cent focused in this weekend’s trip to Liverpool.

The talented 26-year-old would rather be emerging from the home dressing room at Anfield this Saturday having made his desire to join Jurgen Klopp’s men clear.

But, having seen several players enticed away in recent years, Southampton dug in their heels and kept hold of Van Dijk despite the player’s public transfer request towards the end of a messy summer.

“It’s no secret that sometimes players are distracted but it’s normal.”

Southampton have lost numerous players to Liverpool over recent years, but in Pellegrino they have a man who has gone the other way, albeit via a few other pit stops.

The former Argentina international spent time at Anfield in both playing and coaching capacities, before going it alone as a manager in his own right.

Now Saints manager Pellegrino returns to Liverpool in need of a morale-boosting result.

The search for more attractive, open football after Claude Puel has yet to pay dividends and the 1-0 home defeat to Burnley saw Southampton fail to score for the ninth time 12 top-flight home games.

“When we think about the last 10 games we have had the same problem but we have to be more efficient and we need a really, really high number of chances to convert into goals,” Pellegrino said at an event organised by sponsors Virgin Media.

“We could try to play in a different way but for Southampton’s confidence we need to find different solutions because professionally I think the connection we all have could not get any better.”

Pellegrino knows pressure is growing from the stands, though, perhaps too in the boardroom.

“The most beautiful thing in our life: to try and be better tomorrow than today,” he said.

“But the big risk in football is to work in football. It’s like the biggest risk is to be alive, no? When you’re on the motorway, you are taking a big risk. But in our job to work in football we are living for results.”

Southampton boss gives verdict on Virgil van Dijk’s state of mind ahead of Liverpool trip

Show/hide article…

Van Dijk was linked with leaving Southampton throughout the summer transfer window. Liverpool tried to land the Dutch defender - who handed in a transfer request at St Mary’s - and were forced to apologise to the Saints about their aggressive negotiating tactics. The Reds remain admirers of the 26-year-old and are expected to go back in for him in January. Van Dijk’s Southampton take on Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday and Pellegrino is confident his star centre-back will only have one thing on his mind.

“It’s no secret that sometimes players are distracted but it’s normal” The Saints boss said: “I don’t think it will be difficult because Virgil knows he is focused 100 per cent on our team and is training well. "He wants to improve his performances because obviously he was injured in [January] and then he didn’t play any games.” While Pellegrino says Van Dijk is concentrating on Saturday’s match, he admits players’ minds can sometimes be swayed by speculation. He added: “Obviously we cannot control the [transfer] market and every single transfer window clubs are looking to buy our players.

“But we are looking for players to try to improve our squad too. It’s part of our job. Football today is a big business - and we have to understand this. “Now clubs are fighting in the market to find the best player and we have a lot of good players - it’s part of our job. “It’s no secret that sometimes players are distracted but it’s normal."

Davis scoops October award

Show/hide article…

The skipper beat out competition from fellow nominees Ryan Bertrand, Cédric and Manolo Gabbiadini to win the latest prize.

Davis, who scored in the 1-1 draw at Brighton amid a host of strong performances, also enjoyed a month to remember as he visited Buckingham Palace to be made an MBE by Prince William.

Picking up the award after returning from international duty with Northern Ireland, Davis reflected on a period that has been filled with a range of emotions.

“There’s been some really good highs and some big lows as well, but I’m delighted to get it, so thank you to everyone who voted,” he said.

"The fans are supporting you every game. You try to do your best always, as everybody does in the team, so it’s always nice to be recognised for your efforts.

"Like everything, there’s room for improvement. It was nice to get on the scoresheet at Brighton, it was just unfortunate we couldn’t get three points there.

“I think there’s been a little bit of frustration we’re not getting the points we feel we deserved, but nothing’s handed to you in football. You have to work for everything you get, so it’s important we stick together and keep fighting for each other and I’m sure the results will turn in our favour.”

October was a particularly special month for Davis, as it concluded with him visiting Buckingham Palace to be made an MBE by Prince William.

“It was a special day,” he said. "It was great to be able to share that with my family, and my dad got across as well, and I took my wife and my two girls with me, so it was a really memorable day.

“It was something I never expected in a million years, but obviously a huge honour to receive it, and it was nice to have a chat with Prince William on the day and be there with all the people who have done so well in their specific fields and spend the day hearing a few of their stories as well.”

Klopp admitted to hospital ahead of Saints game

Show/hide article…

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp missed training on Wednesday after being admitted to hospital having felt unwell.

Klopp has undergone checks by medical staff and will be released this evening so will not require an overnight stay.

The full squad returned to Melwood from international duty to train late on Wednesday afternoon ahead of their game against Saints at Anfield on Saturday, but it was without Klopp, who by then was already at hospital having decided to admit himself.

“He is being assessed by doctors and will be absent from training on Wednesday as a result,” said a statement from Liverpool.

"There are currently no plans for Jurgen to remain in hospital beyond his appointment and he will therefore return home this evening; however, he may require further check-ups in the coming days.

“The club urges that the privacy of Jurgen, his family and other patients is respected while attending hospital visits.”
