Virgil van Dijk ‘focused 100 percent’ ahead of Liverpool trip - Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino says Virgil van Dijk will be 100 percent focused in this weekend’s trip to Liverpool.

Liverpool had to apologise in June for “any misunderstanding” surrounding their interest in the defender, saying they had dropped their interest after Southampton asked the Premier League to investigate an alleged improper approach.

And, having seen several players enticed away in recent years, Southampton dug in their heels and kept hold of Van Dijk despite the player’s public transfer request towards the end of a messy summer.

But Saints manager Pellegrino has no doubts about the 26-year-old’s mentality.

“I don’t think it will be difficult because Virgil knows he is focused 100 percent on our team and is training well,” he said. "He wants to improve his performances because obviously he was injured in [January] and then he didn’t play any games.

"Obviously we cannot control the [transfer] market and every single transfer window clubs are looking to buy our players but we are looking for players to try to improve our squad too. It’s part of our job.

“Football today is a big business – and we have to understand this. Now clubs are fighting in the market to find the best player and we have a lot of good players – it’s part of our job. It’s no secret that sometimes players are distracted but it’s normal.”

Pellegrino, who spent time with Liverpool as a player and a coach, returns to the club in need of a morale-boosting result.

The search for more attractive, open football after Claude Puel has yet to pay dividends and the 1-0 home defeat to Burnley saw Southampton fail to score for the ninth time in 12 top-flight home games.

“When we think about the last 10 games we have had the same problem but we have to be more efficient and we need a really, really high number of chances to convert into goals,” Pellegrino said.

“We could try to play in a different way but for Southampton’s confidence we need to find different solutions because professionally I think the connection we all have could not get any better.”

Pellegrino knows pressure is growing from the stands, though, perhaps too in the boardroom.

“The most beautiful thing in our life: to try and be better tomorrow than today,” he said. “But the big risk in football is to work in football. It’s like the biggest risk is to be alive, no? When you’re on the motorway, you are taking a big risk. But in our job to work in football we are living for results.”

Adam Lallana set for Liverpool return against Southampton as Jordan Henderson resumes training

Adam Lallana is on course to make his long-awaited return for Liverpool against former club Southampton this weekend.

The 29-year-old has not played this season, having sustained a thigh injury against Atletico Madrid in pre-season, but played in a behind-closed-doors friendly at the Reds’ Melwood training ground on Tuesday.

The England forward returned to training at the club’s base in mid-October after a spell at the Aspire clinic in Qatar, where he met retiring former Spain and Barcelona star Xavi.

Manager Jurgen Klopp, who was admitted to hospital after feeling unwell on Wednesday, will also hope to have another player available to face his former club Saints in Sadio Mane.

Mane returned from a month out with injury against West Ham last time out but was released from the Senegal squad with a slight niggle earlier this week.

And Jordan Henderson has also resumed training after missing the 4-1 Hammers clash with a thigh injury.

Philippe Coutinho has already recovered from an adductor knock and is also set to star when Southampton - and Liverpool’s summer target Virgil van Dijk - visit Anfield on Saturday.

Sainsbury’s QK hope a surprise is in store against Saints

Show/hide article…

QK SOUTHAMPTON will be flying the flag for the Hampshire Premier League when they take on Saints U23s in the Southampton Senior Cup tonight.

The third round tie at Staplewood has captured the imagination of a QK side ready to take on a Saints team that beat BTC Southampton 6-0 in the last round, courtesy of goals from Armani Little (2), Dan N’Lundulu, Tom O’Connor, Tyreke Johnson and Will Ferry.

That was Saints’ first appearance in the Southampton Senior Cup since 1970, having re-entered the competition in celebration of its centenary.

QK manager Mark Sainsbury smiled: “We’ve had a few more at training since the draw!

“Our squad has an average age of 21-22 and eight of them could hold their own in the Wessex Premier.

“Most of them were brought in from Stoneham under-18s when I took over as manager four years ago.”

QK are currently sixth in the New Forest Care Hampshire Premier League and won 7-0 against Hartley Wintney in the Hampshire Intermediate Cup on Saturday.

“When I first took over four years ago we lost eight on the trot but finished 12th, sixth and last season we reached a cup final and made the top five,” continued Sainsbury .

“This year we’re ready to win something but I don’t believe it will be the Southampton Senior Cup - this will be our cup final!

“A couple of our players were onSaints’ books as youngsters before being released at a young age.

“It’s a great opportunity for them to show what QK are about.

"We’ll be ourselves and get it down and play.

“Southampton will be much fitter than us but I believe we can give them something to think about rather than go with a defensive mindset.

“The lads are buzzing for it.

"We’ve really pushed them hard on the fitness and all this preparation has raised the bar for two more important games - in the league against Clanfield on Saturday and a League Cup quarter-final against Bush Hill a week later.”

Sainsbury, whose son Lee is QK’s goalkeeper, used to coach injured Saints’ defender Jake Flannigan for Colden Common under-7s.

The star of his QK team is Callum Drake, scorer of both goals in the 2-0 second round win against Bush Hill reserves.

Sainsbury said: “Callum is the jewel in our side. He’s turned down four or five approaches from Wessex Premier sides and teams from the Southern League have had a look at him.

“But he’s been very loyal and will be making his 100th appearance for us at Staplewood.

"He’s not great pace but is very good at finding pockets of space.

“He has great awareness and beats players with his first touch.

I’ve got a sneaky feeling that if he plays well tonight he might even get invited back for a trial!”

Report: Saints 12-0 QK Southampton

Show/hide article…

The home side opened the game with a frenzied spell of attacks, driving forward with purpose and menace, and were soon stamping their authority on proceedings.

The dominance was present from the off, as a succession of Will Smallbone corners were confidently converted by Will Wood and Armani Little.

The former powered home a precision header in the sixth minute, while Little managed to escape his marker at the back post to nod home three minutes later.

Nathan Tella’s dancing feet were causing issues on the half-hour mark, as the wide man carried the ball unchecked, before eventually drawing the foul and providing the prelude to the third goal.

Smallbone despatched the chance with a fulminating low drive, leaving unsighted opposition ‘keeper Lee Sainsbury motionless. The teenage midfielder then helped himself to a second, and Saints’ fourth in the 37th minute, curling a meticulous shot inside the far post.

A standard setting performance from Smallbone was capped early in the second half, as he freed Tella with an incisive yet perfectly weighted pass, before the winger rounded Sainsbury and rolled in to an empty net.

The margin of difference was further increased in the 55th minute as Harlem Hale’s perceptiveness released Marcus Barnes, who deservedly netted the home side’s sixth, before Little added a seventh with a well controlled side foot finish 60 seconds later.

Crestfallen, QK Southampton’s uphill task was made that much harder when they were reduced to ten men on the hour mark, as Jordan Breen’s mistimed tackle was adjudged to have warranted a red card.

Five minutes after entering the field, substitute Michael Obafemi found the net, before Barnes ensured the goal count neared double figures with his second strike of the night, soon to be followed by the completion of his hat-trick in the 74th minute.

Tella grabbed two more to round off a comfortable evening, awash with standout red and white performers and a bombardment of Saints goals.

Liverpool stars Sadio Mane, Adam Lallana and Jordan Henderson could be fit for Southampton

Show/hide article…

Liverpool star Sadio Mane could be fit to face former side Southampton on Saturday

The flying winger returned from a month out with a hamstring injury two weeks ago as the Reds side thumped West Ham 4-1.

He suffered a setback during Senegal’s 2-0 win over South Africa during the international break and Jurgen Klopp admitted he was concerned about the situation.

But according to the Liverpool Echo, the injury is not as serious as first thought and Mane is expected to take part in training on Friday.

The decision over whether or not he’ll be fit to play will be a late one but there is some hope that he’ll be able to take part.

Southampton’s Mauricio Pellegrino captivated by football’s capacity for happiness

Show/hide article…

A game of football, just like any other. The pitch a little damp from the previous night’s rain. A bunch of blokes all charging in various indistinct directions, screaming cryptic aphorisms that will make very little sense to the disinterested observer, and barely more to those on the receiving end: “SQUEEZE!” “TWO HERE!” “WHO’S YOUR MAN?”

At the centre of it all, kitted out in the black and green of Southampton’s away colours, stands Mauricio Pellegrino, once of Liverpool, Barcelona, Valencia and Argentina. He retired as a professional more than a decade ago, and yet this remains his idea of perfect happiness. No points, no prizes. Just football.

When he was appointed Southampton manager over the summer, one of the first things he did was to organise a regular game on Thursdays or Fridays for the club staff, in which he would frequently take part. And so when the club’s sponsors, Virgin Media, asked whether he would be interested in assembling a club XI against a team of journalists, he leapt at the opportunity. For Pellegrino, the son of a provincial Argentinian farmer who might never have left his village without football, this game has always been a tool for bringing people together.

“When you play football,” he says, “you can change your habits. You can know people a little bit better. And you can talk a little bit more. Sometimes, in the biggest companies, there are a lot of areas where you don’t know the people that work in them. Football is something that is good to unite people, to think about togetherness, not just on the pitch, but off it too.”

It is a vocation that has become an addiction. These days, Pellegrino works in a billion-pound industry, where his every decision has a million unseen consequences, where time is short and reputations are cheap. But that essential love for the game has never left him. “From 10 years old,” he says, “all I wanted to do is work in football. I felt that whether you win or lose.”

This is why the precarious existence of the Premier League manager, brought into slightly sharper focus by Southampton’s indifferent start to the season, does not unduly trouble him. “Everything is a risk,” he says. “But the biggest risk is to be alive, no? When you’re on the motorway, you are taking a big risk. We cannot control the results, and that is part of life.”

Besides, Pellegrino is confident they will turn things around. They may be 13th, five places below where his predecessor Claude Puel finished last season, a performance not deemed sufficient to save him from the sack. They may have scored just nine goals in 11 games, and been eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Wolves at home. But he feels they are moving in the right direction.

“The dynamic of the training sessions is really good,” he says. “But we have to convert this progress into delivering more in the final third. We need a really, really high number of chances to convert into goals. I think we played better than our points show. Two or three points in the Premier League are massive. I think we are on the right track.”

He rejects the idea that a more offensive, less cautious approach is required. “Everything is connected,” he explains. “If you defend badly, it is really difficult to attack well. If you attack badly, it’s difficult to defend. We are a team that is comfortable when we manage the ball. I cannot imagine [Sofiane] Boufal, [Nathan] Redmond, [Manolo] Gabbiadini or Dusan Tadic behind the ball for 90 minutes.”

Southampton travel to Liverpool this weekend, a fixture freighted with significance for more reasons than one. It is the club where Pellegrino spent a largely forgettable six months in 2005 under his mentor Rafa Benitez, but more recently it has been the club trying to prise away - by common consent - Southampton’s best player.

Pellegrino will admit that Virgil van Dijk had his head turned by Liverpool’s interest during the summer. “Every single transfer window, clubs are looking to buy our players,” he says. “It’s no secret that sometimes players are distracted. But it’s normal. Virgil knows he is focused 100 per cent on our team, and is training well.”

For Pellegrino, the training ground is where truths are told, where the real work is done, where the dreams are forged. For him, coaching is a constant negotiation between the idea or the ideal he has in his mind, and what a player is capable of. “It’s like a medium point between them and my belief,” he explains. “At the end, in football there is no truth, there is belief.”

This is the sort of thinking that so intrigued Ross Wilson and Les Reed, Southampton’s head of scouting and executive director, when they sounded out Pellegrino to replace Puel this summer. “They told me that the club wants to grow,” says Pellegrino. “For me, that’s the most beautiful thing in life: to try and be better tomorrow than today.

“I played football from my childhood and I got the feeling of success, failure, to draw or win. When you win, you are happy for an hour. And then you have to train again. When you are champion, you are happy for a day. And after, you have to train again to try achieve another title. It’s part of our job, no?”

Southampton’s training ground at Marchwood, a small village just across the estuary from St Mary’s Stadium, is like a shrine to this philosophy. On a whiteboard in the first-team gym, the endurance and sprint speed numbers of every player are notched up for everyone to see. Van Dijk, Shane Long, and Matt Targett are three of the quickest. In the junior gym, an electronic screen displays a list of “Ten Academy Commandments”, ranging from clean boots to greeting visitors to “be honest, tell the truth”.

Everything is connected. From the size of the pitches (exactly the same dimensions as St Mary’s) to the layout of the campus (first team facilities nearest the hub, junior teams furthest away, to create a sense of progression) no detail has been spared in the search for maximum advantage. “The facilities here are the best around,” Pellegrino says. “I have everything to be happy.”

That word again. It crops up repeatedly in Pellegrino’s speech: a reminder that for all its ability to deliver salvation, redemption, vindication, profit, it is the ability to deliver happiness that really sets football apart.

That happiness can come in many forms. It can come from connecting with people. “The people have to be proud of your team,” Pellegrino says. “At full-time it is not always about the result, it is about the people’s feeling that 11 players are giving everything, every single game. Against Manchester United, we lost. But people were happy, because they could see the team were giving it everything.”

It can come from unexpected triumph, or a plan coming together. And sometimes, even when the pitch is still a little damp and the opposition of decidedly mixed quality, it can still come from slipping on a pair of boots and having a run around. He may be 46 and greying at the temples, but Pellegrino can still play a bit. He glides across a pitch where most of us can barely remain upright. He shamelessly nutmegs our star striker.

The Pellegrino XI win 2-0, and as hands are shaken, pleasantries exchanged, the normally stern face of Southampton’s manager is wreathed in smiles. His words are the words of a true addict. “I love my job,” he says. “I know there is a big pressure, a big risk, but I have to do it. All my life, it is the only thing I can do.”

Saints U23s 12-0 QK Southampton 0: Goal fest at Staplewood

Show/hide article…

SAINTS cruised into the Southampton Senior Cup fourth round - after second-half hat-tricks for Marcus Barnes and Nathan Tella.

Head of football development Les Reed looked on alongside U23s coach Martin Hunter at Staplewood as Saints outclassed the Hampshire Premier League outfit.

Saints enjoyed a similar start to their 6-0 third-round win against BTC Southampton. They were 2-0 up within ten minutes as Will Wood and Armani Little headed in corners.

Then Saints number ten Will Smallbone scored twice in five minutes, lashing in the third across goal before passing the fourth into the far corner.

It would have been more had it not been for the athleticism of QK goalkeeper Lee Sainsbury, the son of the club’s manager.

He denied Smallbone a hat-trick by tipping a deflected strike away from the top corner on the stroke of half-time.

But there were eye-catching trebles for Tella and Barnes as Saints slipped through the gears after the break.

Winger Tella rounded Sainsbury beautifully before netting the fifth after a wonderful pass from left-back Wood.

Smallbone put a free header wide but Barnes rounded Sainsbury before netting the sixth from an acute angle.

Tempers frayed after Little slotted the seventh from Tella’s cross.

QK had to play the last half hour with ten men when Jordan Breen was sent off for an appalling two-footed tackle on Saints right-back Richard Bakary.

Both saves made changes following heated exchanges.

Saints sub Michael Obafemi was denied by Sainsbury before slotting the eighth midway through the second half.

Barnes made it nine with a left-footer into the far corner before Craig Johnston joined Joe Griggs in the book for a fouling the tricky Tella.

Little had a shot turned behind but Barnes took Saints into double figures with a sumptuous left-footer off the underside of the crossbar.

Tella stroked in the 11th and completed the scoring after Sainsbury’s save from Obafemi’s shot fell at his feet.

Sainsbury continued his heroics by keeping out a Wood free kick before Afolabi hit the post in the last minute.

Saints were very impressive but this was not the club’s biggest win at Staplewood tonight - the U14s beat Eastleigh U15s 18-0.
