Sunderland and David Moyes to fly to New York for team bonding

Show/hide article…

David Moyes is confident that a cold-weather mid-season break can help fire Sunderland to safety after revealing he will take his players running in New York’s frost-bitten Central Park next week.

Temperatures in the Big Apple have plunged to minus 4C in recent days but Moyes has not been put off by the the threat of sub-zero conditions.

Sunderland face Southampton on Saturday, who booked a place in the EFL Cup final against Manchester United with a 2-0 aggregate win over Liverpool in the semis.

‘The psyche is that, when we come back, we’ll think Sunderland is like Dubai!’ joked Moyes, whose side thrashed Crystal Palace 4-0 seven days ago and could emerge from the bottom three with victory at home to Southampton on Saturday.

'We all like the sunshine, apart from us ginger lads. But I’ve done it [New York] before and it works, so I’m hoping it will again.

'Sometimes they need a bit of a break. We are going to watch basketball, a few are going to the ice hockey, a few will go to Ground Zero and we’ll encourage that. You’d be surprised how many lads haven’t done that. They’re all pretty excited about it.

‘We’ll go to Monday to Friday and will train every day. We’ll do quite a bit of running in Central Park as well.’

Moyes told his players before the game at Selhurst Park about the trip and they duly produced their best performance of the season, winning 4-0, with goals from Lamine Kone, Didier Ndong and a brace from Jermain Defoe.

And he added: 'I hope they give me the same sort of response. I definitely sensed a lift when I told them.

'I’ve always thought if you treat players right, give them the best you can then you can expect the best back from them. We ask a lot of them so I’ll try to give my players the best back and make them feel good.

‘But the big thing for me is to get a team spirit so they look after each other on the pitch. I want them to build relationships off it too.’

The Black Cats have missed opportunities already this season to climb from the relegation zone, and Moyes said: 'Maybe we’re a club that doesn’t find it easy when the expectation rises. Maybe we’re better when we’re backs to the wall a little bit. We’re used to that here.

‘Now we’ve got a chance we’ve got to show that we can take it and get a result.’

Claude Puel to new Saint Manolo Gabbiadini: Fire Southampton to safety!

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel’s Southampton are flirting with relegation after six losses in seven

Saints will be just five points above bottom club Sunderland if they lose on Wearside today after winning only one league game since December 18.

Italian ace Gabbiadini got his Premier League career off to a flying start with a goal 12 minutes into his debut in last weekend’s 3-1 defeat at home to West Ham following a £17m move from Napoli.

Southampton boss Puel said: “Gabbiadini is a good technical player and it is important to play high up the pitch and have many options.

“He is always available and gives good solutions behind the defence with good runs.

Ryan Bertrand offers to get Saints out of a bind by playing new position

Show/hide article…

Ryan Bertrand has offered to solve Southampton’s centre back crisis at Sunderland tomorrow – by going up against prolific Jermain Defoe.

Left-back Bertrand is ready to step in for injured captain Virgil van Dijk in the middle to help Saints avoid being dragged into the Premier League relegation scrap .

With van Dijk sidelined with an ankle problem , former skipper Jose Fonte sold to West Ham and new signing Martin Caceres awaiting a work permit, Saints are short of options.

England man Bertrand said: “Playing in the middle comes naturally. It’s the same defensive principles, but there are different requirements of the job.

“There is no more running forwards as much and there’s a bit more discipline. It’s a bit more of a high risk position.

“It’s nice to play new positions. It’s good to learn and succeeding in a new position is good for your career. If I have to play there, then I’ll play there.”

If Bertrand does make the switch he will be up against in-form Defoe, who has banged in 14 goals for struggling Sunderland this season.

Former Chelsea ace Bertrand said: “Class is permanent and he’s arguably one of the best in the league at what he does.

“He’s come back and he’s playing – with all due respect – in a lesser side, according to the table at least, but still producing the goals.

“He fully deserves everything and deserves more recognition.

“He’s very professional in his approach to football and that’s continued, proving again that age is just a number and, at the end of it, 14 goals in the Premier League is no small feat.”

Puel refuses to blame Saints’ injury curse

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel insists Saints are not about to start blaming injuries for their recent patchy form.

The Saints boss was keen to deflect questions about whether he has been cursed with bad luck on the injury front this season in a campaign that has seen him so often robbed of key players.

With probably his two biggest stars, Charlie Austin and Virgil van Dijk, ruled out for significant periods it has hurt Saints.

Add to that the number of minor problems along the way and Puel could be forgiven for seeking to place some blame for Saints’ recent problems, which has seen them perform inconsistently, on injury problems.

However, he is having none of it.

He said: “I don’t like to come back with injuries because it is important always to look forward and to continue the work.

“It would be difficult for any team to lose Charlie, who was our best striker with his goals, and now the chief of our defence and our captain, and Sofiane Boufal injured with the surgery at the beginning and now an injury and suspension with his national team.

“All this is difficult of course, but we have to give always the good answer and to find the good solution.

“It is an opportunity for other players to show their qualities and I respect this.

“Sometimes it is difficult for the recovery and for example to make a lot of rotation against Arsenal in the cup, but it was an obligation because we had nine players injured. It was not possible to keep fit all the players every time.

“It is difficult but it’s not just for me but the staff and the players also because they don’t like to lose.

“I think it is strengthening for the future because after this bad moment, bad period, we will come back strong for this game, the final and the games after because it’s a fantastic game to play after the final against great teams and we can learn in this bad moment with strong character it is very interesting for the future.

“For the moment it is difficult but we see other players with a good spirit, good attitude and what I can see this week was interesting with the quality and the character of the team. Now I would like on the pitch on Saturday.”

Puel will have another defensive option in place if Martin Caceres is given a work permit and joins up with the squad next week, but ahead of today’s trip to Sunderland the manager is focussed on trying to make the best of what he has at his disposal.

“I think with the absence of Virgil we know it is an important player for us and our captain,” admitted Puel.

“He is one of the best defenders in the Premier League and we cannot replace him with the same players, the same possibilities.

“Jack Stephens is a good young player and he improve quickly because it’s important and he can show his quality.

“I think the answer is collective and to give a little more for everyone and to give a solution with a good concentration with a good defence.

“All this is very important to compensate the absence of Virgil with a lot of concentration about the defence, but for all the team with the free kicks, with the play, on the quality, we can do better, and it is important to make good and strong work to compensate the absence.”
