Vokins makes England Under-17s debut

Show/hide article…

The 16-year-old was gifted a starting berth at left back for the opening fixture of the Algarve Tournament against hosts Portugal.

And despite falling to a 1-0 defeat, Vokins was delighted to be involved for the full match and make his international bow.

“I think I’ll definitely look back on this moment as a real highlight,” he explained.

“The feeling when I put on that shirt was incredible. I just want to keep doing it, progressing and getting more caps.

“My parents were both out here to watch and they were very proud and happy, apparently they were a little bit emotional when I was walking out!"

Vokins has previously been involved with the England Under-15s set-up, but the call to the Algarve Tournament was his first for the Under-17s.

“Obviously I was a bit nervous coming out here,” he admits.

“This group have all been together before, so I just wanted to get to know everyone and settle in, really.

"We only had two training sessions before the game, so I just wanted to show what I can do and impress - I felt like I did that, so I am very happy.”

Bertrand: Defoe one of the best around

Show/hide article…

Ryan Bertrand rates Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe as one of the best in the Premier League.

Saints will be up against the forward at the Stadium of Light this afternoon, with Defoe having netted 14 top-flight goals already this term for the division’s bottom-placed side.

Ahead of the clash with the Black Cats, Bertrand told reporters: “It’s as they say, class is permanent and he’s arguably one of the best in the league at what he does.

“He’s come back and playing in, with due respect, a lesser side – according to the table at least – and still producing the goals.

“He fully deserves everything and he should get more recognition than he does.

“I’ve had brief spells with him and he’s been very professional in his approach to football, and that proves again that perhaps age is just a number, and 14 goals in the Premier League is no small feat and he deserves all the recognition that he should get.

“No-one doubts that he is a threat in front of goal and will score goals.”

Revealed! All-time top goalscorers in English top flight football from 1888 to present day

Show/hide article…

Wayne Rooney became Manchester United’s all-time top goalscorer this season, but he remains some way off the all-time top flight goal record.

His 195th Premier League strike came against Stoke City – a glorious free-kick to rescue the Red Devils a point – and he’ll need 65 more to catch Alan Shearer’s Premier League record.

But did you know Shearer, while holding the Premier League goalscoring record with 260 strikes, actually scored 283 top flight goals?

That is because the Premier League is merely the name of the English top flight since the 1992/93 season, when the top division broke away from the Football League, which had previously been in charge of what was known as Division One.

So taking into account every goal scored since the Football League was founded in 1888, Rooney is actually 162 goals behind the overall top flight record.

So, just who does hold that record?

Moyes hopes trip to Big Apple bears fruit after Saints clash

Show/hide article…

David Moyes is hoping a trip to the Big Apple will bear fruit as Sunderland dig in for another Premier League relegation battle.

The Black Cats boss and his players will head for New York on a team-bonding exercise after today’s home clash with Saints, ahead of what promises to be a tense run-in.

It will be far from a sunshine break - the forecast for next week includes snow and temperatures as low as -7C - but it will give the squad a chance to forge the kind of spirit they will need to scrap their way out of trouble.

Moyes said: “I’ve done it before. It’s something different. I know it works. For the players, it’s something to look forward to.

“I told them last week and I hope I get the same positive response as I did against Crystal Palace when I told them we were going to New York. If they can give me that again this week, then I’ll be more than happy and I might even fix up something else.

“I don’t know what I’m going to top it with, but look, we will go there and we’ll train every day. We’ll train differently, but sometimes at this time of the year, they need a little bit of a break as well and going to a training camp is not always the best idea.

“We will do other things - we are going to watch basketball, a few are going to the ice hockey… There’ll be some, I’m sure, will go to Ground Zero where some of them have never been.

“The big thing for me is for us to get a team spirit where they look after each other on the pitch.”

Asked if the win against Palace had increased his belief that the Black Cats can avoid the drop, Moyes said: “I’ve always thought we had a good chance, but if the players play as well as they did do in the last game, it will give us an even better chance.

“They went to another level last week. Now, how often we can get that level will be crucial to where we end up.”

Manchester United vs Watford, Premier League: What time is kick-off, is it on TV and what is our prediction?

Show/hide article…

“We know that we have a squad that like every squad needs changes, but we know also that our squad has potential, has good players, many of them in the best age, the age of evolution,” Mourinho told a news conference. "We prefer to bring two three or four players, players that can improve our squad. We are not interested in signing six or seven or selling six or seven. “We are stable, so we think our market in the summer will be soft, will be natural. Some players to leave, some players to come but in a very natural way so I think the word Ed used was a good one.”

“I always said that competition is very important for us and for the players,” Mazzarri said. "The players that are coming back and starting to play means there is competition. Even Troy (Deeney), you see he is doing extremely well now, much more than before. “He knows that I expect the maximum intensity in training because at the end of training I take my decisions and decide who can play.”

Chris Brereton: United will be favourites after going unbeaten in the Premier League since the 4-0 defeat to Chelsea on October 23 but Watford have won their last two league encounters - over Arsenal and Burnley respectively - so they are likely to offer a more buoyant resistance than perhaps a month or so a go. No classic this, but United will be confident of going into a run of three consecutive cup games on the back of yet another home victory.

Bertrand on lessons learned from Lampard and Cole, why he left Chelsea

Show/hide article…

Southampton left back Ryan Bertrand has revealed that he left Chelsea in order to get consistent first-team opportunities.

The England defender left the club he had joined at the age of 15 to move to the south coast on loan in 2014, before making the deal permanent a year later.

He has since become a regular at international level and a mainstay for this season’s EFL Cup finalists, and though he admits it was hard to leave Stamford Bridge, he believes it was necessary for the sake of his career.

Speaking to The Times he said: 'It was hard leaving Chelsea because I was there from 15, and I’d done a lot of things at the club, but at the same time it wasn’t that hard.

‘I wanted to show people who I am. I wanted consistent opportunity. I couldn’t wait to get started.’

Aside from the success of winning the Champions League and Europa League in successive seasons, Bertrand took pleasure in learning from two of England’s greats in Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole.

He continued: 'I like to do finishing after training. I even had the argument when sometimes the coach will come and say, “No finishing today, rest your legs.” But equally I’ve come from a place where I saw Lampard do it every single day.

'It is no coincidence that he goes on to score 20 plus goals for five seasons in a row.

'When everything’s finished he’d just walk over, bring a ‘keeper, a slightly younger one and go with the coach, and work on anything. I did join, I couldn’t help but not. I wanted to improve even thought it’s not my role.’

On the ‘unbelievable’ Cole, who he competed with for a first-team spot, he has nothing but glowing praise.

‘Fans will be fans, you know, on his back and even on the outside the toughest of times, but his attitude to training, the way he would come out and train and play, was amazing.’
