Sunderland v Southampton: Team news, kick-off time, odds and stats

Show/hide article…

Ahead of this weekend’s Premier League action, Sportsmail will be providing you with all you need to know about every fixture, with team news, provisional squads, betting odds and Opta stats. Here is all the information you need for Sunderland’s home clash with Southampton.

Sunderland boss David Moyes is hopeful of having John O’Shea and Adnan Januzaj fit for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Southampton.

Central defender O’Shea (hamstring) and Januzaj (hip) both picked up injuries in last Saturday’s 4-0 victory at Crystal Palace but have trained this week. Januzaj’s midfield colleague Jack Rodwell (also hamstring) has not been as fortunate and will not be involved.

Keeper Jordan Pickford is closing in on a return from a knee problem but will not be risked against the Saints. Midfielders Jan Kirchhoff and Paddy McNair and strikers Victor Anichebe and Duncan Watmore (all knee), as well as midfielder Lee Cattermole (hip), are still sidelined and defender Papy Djilobodji is suspended.

Southampton’s club-record signing Sofiane Boufal will miss Saturday’s visit to Sunderland because of an ankle injury.

His absence, which could yet extend to the EFL Cup final against Manchester United on February 26, further weakens a squad already missing defender Virgil van Dijk, also because of an ankle injury.

Nathan Redmond is pushing for a first-team recall having appeared as a substitute in last week’s 3-1 home defeat by West Ham.

Sunderland haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last eight Premier League games against the Saints (W1 D5 L2), conceding 16 goals – although half of those came in an 8-0 defeat in October 2014.

There hasn’t been a goalless draw between these sides in any competition since March 1978 – each of the last 37 games has seen at least one goal scored.

David Moyes has lost only once in 11 previous Premier League meetings with Southampton (0-1 in September 2002 at Everton), though six matches have been draws (W4).

Jermain Defoe has scored in each of his last two Premier League appearances against Southampton for Sunderland. Both goals came away from home – giving Sunderland the lead in the 80th and 85th minute respectively, only for Southampton to equalise five minutes later both times.

Defoe’s two goals against Crystal Palace took him into second place in Sunderland’s all-time leading Premier League goalscorers with 33 goals, one ahead of Darren Bent on 32 – although he is 28 goals behind Kevin Phillips (61 goals).

Three of Sunderland’s last four Premier League goals against the Saints have been penalties (two from Jordi Gomez and one from Defoe).

Southampton are one of three Premier League sides yet to collect a point away from home in 2017, along with Burnley and Bournemouth.

Only Hull (77) have faced more shots on target in home Premier League games this season than the Black Cats (76).

Manolo Gabbiadini became the 100th Premier League scorer for Southampton when he scored against West Ham – only one Saints player has ever scored in their first two Premier League appearances for the club, with Henri Camara doing so in February 2005.

Sunderland have kept as many clean sheets in their last two league outings (2) as they did in the 22 games under David Moyes prior to that.

Four first-half goals at Selhurst Park without reply saw them move level on points with their opponents as they look to move away from the bottom of the Premier League table.

And Moyes says they must maintain that sort of level of performance if they are to pull away from danger.

He said: “We had a great result last week and the players showed exactly what they can do.

“It was a very all round team performance both in terms of scoring goals and probably more importantly keeping clean sheets and cutting out mistakes.

“If we play at that level we’ll give ourselves every chance of moving off the bottom of the league.

“We’re in a good mood but we also know that we’ve got a long way to go and a lot more to do.”

Saints head to the Stadium of Light on the back of three defeats, and are in search of their first away points on the road in 2017.

“I think Southampton have got a good team. I think the cup might have been a bit of a distraction for them and you’ve got to remember they’ve had European football as well,” Moyes added.

“I think they’ve done a really good job as a club generally. They’ve had to sell a lot of players and change managers for different reasons.

“I think they’ve got a really good side but we have to forget about that in this game and make sure we go out and prove we can win the game.”

David Moyes in confident mood ahead of clash with Southampton despite two key injuries

Show/hide article…

An under-the-weather David Moyes seemed in a confident mood in Sunderland’s pre-match press conference on Friday despite ruling out two players through injury for this weekend’s game with Southampton.

Sunderland registered a resounding 4-0 win over Sam Allardyce’s Crystal Palace last time out and Moyes wants to build on that with a positive result at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

“We had a great result last weekend and the players showed everyone what they could do. It was a great team performance,” the Scot said.

“For me, the level of our performance was great. It was hard not to say that some of our players had their best games for us."

Jermain Defoe has been the stand-out player for Sunderland this season and he scored two against Palace last Saturday.

Apart from Defoe, the other player who has been a shining light in what has been a dim season is 22-year-old English goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Moyes will be without his number one choice keeper against Sunderland, though, as Pickford is yet to have fully recovered from the knee injury he suffered in late December.

Moyes said: “Jordan is back but the medical team want him to complete the time the surgeon said for his recovery. [So] he won’t be involved.”

Despite being without him and Rodwell, Sunderland’s manager seems to be in high spirits, adding: "I’ve sensed that we want the next game. I hope that proves to be right but we have to play well.

"We’re in a good mood but we have a long way to go. The players have shown the standard they can play at.

“We’ve been in this position before and we’ve not done it so we need to do it this time. We have to be positive and win.”

Højbjerg: Good result sets us up for final

Show/hide article…

Saints face Manchester United, at Wembley Stadium, later this month, but first have a big Premier League visit to the Black Cats.

Højbjerg knows how important three points would be, in terms of pushing the team back up the table, but also to give them a boost for the final.

“The most important right now is on Saturday, against Sunderland, because this is the groundstone to get a good result against Manchester in the final,” he said.

Tomorrow’s game could also be a chance for players to make their final case for inclusion in the team that starts at Wembley.

“I’m very sure that the coach knows what everybody has to give to the team, because we have been together seven months now and we have had many games,” said Højbjerg.

“So the coach knows what every single player has to give to the group and, of course, the Sunderland game has a lot to say to the Manchester game, but we are a team and we need all to trust each other, and the ones who get the time need to use it well.”

Southampton boss Puel urges squad to put League Cup final to one side

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has urged his Southampton players to forget about their EFL Cup final against Manchester United and focus on Saturday’s Premier League fixture at Sunderland.

Against the team that is bottom of the league but threatening a revival, Southampton hope to avoid equalling their worst ever top flight run of seven defeats from eight games, as they last did in 1998-99.

Unlike then, they appear at little risk of relegation, but Puel is concerned their glamorous fixture at Wembley on February 26 could distract them.

‘The game, seriously, I don’t think anything about the final,’ said the 55-year-old, according to the Southampton Daily Echo.

'For me it’s far and we have time to prepare this game, so it’s just to stay focused about this game against Sunderland.

'Our fans, the squad, the staff, all deserve other things, not this last result (losing 3-1 to West Ham).

'All the players have some good concentration about this game without thinking about the final and this is very important.

'We can have one week to prepare this game and it is fantastic for us. It is a very good thing to keep our calm, to have the good analysis about the last games and to find the good solution to prepare this game.

‘It is a good place and a good opponent to show other things and to give pleasure and good feeling for the fans and for all the team and to prepare the final with a good spirit and calm because we know we can do good work the week before.’

Southampton remain without injured centre-back Virgil van Dijk and club-record signing Sofiane Boufal, both owing to ankle injuries.

‘We talk about the absence of Virgil but with the work we can compensate, and we can find the good relationship between the play and the good solution and other players can do a little more to compensate this absence,’ he said.

‘It is important to stay on the reality and our position is not comfortable and to give a good answer for this game. It is an important game for us to see our ambition and to keep us from the other team behind us. This is very important.’

Claude Puel tells Southampton players to forget about EFL Cup final

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel insists the EFL Cup final is not in his thoughts and has urged Southampton’s players to forget about it too.

The St Mary’s side will face Manchester United at Wembley on February 26 but will attempt to arrest an alarming slump in the Premier League before then.

Their meeting with Sunderland this weekend will see Southampton look to avoid matching their worst top flight run of seven defeats in eight games.

Having also gone out of the FA Cup recently with a 5-0 home defeat against Arsenal, Puel admits to being concerned the match against United could distract his players.

The former Nice manager told the Southampton Daily Echo: "The game, seriously, I don’t think anything about the final.

"For me it’s far and we have time to prepare this game, so it’s just to stay focused about this game against Sunderland.

"Our fans, the squad, the staff, all deserve other things, not this last result (losing 3-1 to West Ham). All the players have good concentration about this game without thinking about the final. This is very important.

"We can have one week to prepare this game and it is fantastic for us. It is a very good thing to keep our calm, to have the good analysis about the last games and to find the good solution to prepare this game.

“It is a good place and a good opponent to show other things and to give pleasure and good feeling for the fans and for all the team and to prepare the final with a good spirit and calm because we know we can do good work the week before.”

Southampton remain without two of their key players, team captain Virgil van Dijk and club-record signing Sofiane Boufal, due to ankle injuries.

Puel thinks his other players can make up for their absences and the 55-year-old added: "We talk about the absence of Virgil.

"But with work, we can compensate and find the good relationship between the play and the good solution. Other players can do a little more to compensate this absence.

"It is important to stay on the reality and our position is not comfortable and to give a good answer for this game.

“It is an important game for us to see our ambition and to keep us from the other team behind us. This is very important.”

Saints offered free parking on cup final day

Show/hide article…

Saints fans have been invited to take the stress out of EFL Cup final day by parking for free at Wealdstone FC.

The Conference South club is based in Ruislip, around seven miles from Wembley, and is confident of looking after up to 600 Saints supporters on February 26.

It is a five-minute walk from Ruislip tube station which is a 15-minute tube ride to Wembley Park (the fare is £1.50 using a contactless card and trains go every 8-10 minutes).

A Wealdstone FC spokesman said: "Our car park enables coach driver(s), mini bus drivers and cars to park up in a secure environment and, being just off the main road down to the Polish War Memorial junction on the A40/M40, affords a quick getaway back to the M25 and M3 after the game.

"We have the added advantage that your vehicles will not have to negotiate the Wembley Stadium traffic or spend an hour getting out of their coach park.

"We always have two real ales on tap as well as a selection of lagers, ciders etc. Drink pricing is as reasonable as we can allow – around £3.50 a pint.

"We have an advantage over pubs in that ours is a family-friendly environment. Although children are allowed in the bars, we have a number of adjacent football pitches which allow kids to run around. If there are sufficient numbers our supporters club will run a barbeque.

"We’ve hosted Man City numerous times with a minimum of 600 of them using us as a base both pre and post match every time they’re at Wembley.

"We’ve hosted many clubs since we moved to Ruislip and all will give glowing testimonials of how they were treated.

“We do not ask for a charge to park but hope that supporters will use our facilities”.

For more details or to book a place, please contact James on mob 07979 795414 between 9am-10pm Sunday-Saturday for further details.

(Please note that only pre-booked coaches mini-buses and cars will be admitted).
