The Prediction Challenge: Sportsmail’s experts go head to head

Show/hide article…

Welcome to The Prediction Challenge.

It’s what millions of us do every day - predicting what the score will be in a Premier League match.

Whether it’s a thumping 4-0 home win, a sneaky three points on the road or a 0-0 bore draw, let’s be honest – we all think we can tip the outcome of the next game.

Well, now we’ve challenged Sportsmail’s experts to test their prediction power.

Each week, we’ll ask one of our star columnists to go head to head with one of our top team of reporters.

They will offer their prediction for each Premier League match - and explain why they went for that score.

First up, it’s MARTIN KEOWN vs athletics correspondent MARTHA KELNER… and don’t forget to tell us your predictions by leaving a comment below.

MARTIN KEOWN: Arsenal are scrapping for the Champions League places, Manchester United are just two points behind and Arsene Wenger is fighting for his future. After losing a cluster of matches Arsenal tend to go on a run and I expect them to win. 2-1 to Arsenal.

MARTHA KELNER: While Hull have subverted many expectations with a resurgence under Marco Silva I think the personal criticism levelled at Arsene Wenger after their collapse against Chelsea will inspire Arsenal to victory. 2-1 to Arsenal.

MARTIN KEOWN: This will be tight but I feel United will have learned the lessons Arsenal did not against Watford last week. Jose Mourinho is starting to realise he can gain ground on the teams above him. 1-0 to Man United.

MARTHA KELNER: Old Trafford has historically proved a fiendishly difficult place for Watford on their travels and I think they will leave empty handed once again. Defeat at Vicarage Road in the reverse fixture should have United fired up for revenge. Also fancy Wayne Rooney to get on the scoresheet. 3-1 to Man United.

MARTIN KEOWN: Romelu Lukaku, Tom Davies and Ross Barkley are all firing and Everton have a really astute manager in Ronald Koeman. They can go there and do a number on Middlesbrough. 2-1 to Everton.

MARTHA KELNER: With Boro hovering just above the drop, they need a result here but they are woefully short of firepower and will struggle to contain Romelu Lukaku who, as well as being in sizzling form, has a history of inflicting pain on Boro. 2-0 to Everton.

MARTIN KEOWN: Sam Allardyce will show his quality and ability to pick up points on the road with a hard-earned draw. 1-1.

MARTHA KELNER: Will Big Sam finally taste relegation? There’s an atmosphere of doom around Selhurst Park, and Stoke is the last place you want to go in that kind of mood. Mark Hughes’s side haven’t been pulling up any trees of their own lately, but should win this to pile more misery on the Londoners. 2-1 to Stoke.

MARTIN KEOWN: Sunderland will be buoyed by their victory at Crystal Palace but lost Jack Rodwell and John O’Shea to hamstring injuries. Southampton are blowing hot and cold at the moment but the likes of Jay Rodriguez and Shane Long can hurt Sunderland. 2-2.

MARTHA KELNER: Sunderland remain rock bottom even after thrashing relegation rivals Palace but that should have provided an injection of confidence for David Moyes’s troops while Southampton are in the midst of a defensive crisis and heading in the opposite direction. 1-0 to Sunderland.

MARTIN KEOWN: Tony Pulis will put out a team with a level of stubbornness. They have enough in Gareth McAuley and Craig Dawson to keep Andy Carroll quiet. 0-0.

MARTHA KELNER: There’s an end of season look about this one. Neither team looks likely to be dragged down into the relegation dogfight, while an outside chance of a Europa League place is the most that can be expected looking upwards. Could be another high scoring draw between these two. 2-2 Draw.

MARTIN KEOWN: I am tempted to say Liverpool could finish off Tottenham, while equally if Spurs had all their best players available I would say they would win. Both teams’ seasons hinge on this game. There is too much to lose for either team so I can see this being a draw. 1-1.

MARTHA KELNER: Will an in-form Tottenham pile more misery on Jurgen Klopp? It’s highly possible, although in light of the importance of the fixture in the context of Liverpool’s season, and the passion of the home support, you have to think the Reds have enough to get at least a point. 1-1.

MARTIN KEOWN: Burnley play a system to try to keep things really tight but with the best will in the world you are not going to stop Eden Hazard for 90 minutes. Chelsea will purr through this game. 2-0 to Chelsea.

MARTHA KELNER: Chelsea have the title wrapped up but I can’t see envisage the irrepressible Antonio Conte allowing his players to take their foot off the gas. This coupled with typically resolute defence and soaring confidence up front should see them win, even at fortress Turf Moor. 2-0 to Chelsea.

MARTIN KEOWN: Leicester will not have much possession against Swansea and that could play into their hands. Like last season, I can see them letting their opponents have plenty of the ball before snatching a decisive goal on the break. 1-0 to Leicester.

MARTHA KELNER: It won’t be pretty. Swansea have picked up under Paul Clement, and Leicester’s reserves grabbed a morale-boosting win in the FA Cup this week, but this one has the feel of a grim-faced street fight for Premier League survival. 0-0.

MARTIN KEOWN: Both teams score plenty of goals… but City will score more than Bournemouth! Eddie Howe’s team have got to stop gifting goals to their opponents. 4-2 to Man City.

MARTHA KELNER: The received wisdom of those keen on a catchy headline is that Jesus has saved Manchester City’s season, and there’s no reason to think the Brazilian’s scoring run won’t continue in the face of Bournemouth’s porous defence. 2-0 to Man City.

Match Preview: Sunderland vs Saints

Show/hide article…

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

After defeat to West Ham United, Southampton head to Sunderland looking to bounce back from their recent run and start to climb the table again.

The sides have already met twice in the current campaign. Jay Rodriguez levelled things up after Jermain Defoe had opened the scoring from the spot in the Premier League, while Sofiane Boufal’s stunning strike settled things at St Mary’s in the EFL Cup.

Manolo Gabbiadini marked his debut with a superb strike and he is likely to be involved again at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland remain at the foot of the Premier League table but will be buoyed by their 4-0 success against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. All four goals came in the first-half.

Last time out at home, David Moyes’ men held Tottenham Hotspur to a 0-0 draw and will hope to continue their momentum.

TEAM NEWS

Southampton: Sofiane Boufal will miss the trip to Sunderland, after sustaining an ankle injury against West Ham United.

Long-term absentees Alex McCarthy, Matt Targett, Charlie Austin and Virgil van Dijk remain sidelined.

Sunderland: David Moyes has confirmed that Jordan Pickford will not be involved despite being closer to a return from injury.

Adnan Januzaj and John O’Shea have both trained and could be available but midfielder Jack Rodwell will be sidelined for a few weeks.

FORM GUIDE

Southampton’s previous five:

West Ham United (h) L 3-1

Swansea City (a) L 2-1

Arsenal (h) L 5-0 (FA Cup)

Liverpool (a) W 1-0 (EFL Cup)

Leicester City (h) W 3-0

Sunderland’s previous five:

Crystal Palace (a) W 4-0

Tottenham (h) D 0-0

West Brom (a) L 2-0

Burnley (a) L 2-0 (FA Cup)

Stoke City (h) L 3-1

TOP PERFORMERS

Manolo Gabbiadini wasted no time in introducing himself to the St Mary’s faithful with a fine strike against West Ham United.

The Italian international latched on to Jay Rodriguez’s through ball before firing past Darren Randolph from an acute angle.

In doing so, he became the 100th scorer for Southampton in the Premier League and he will be bidding to become only the second player to score in their first two Premier League appearances for Saints, with Henri Camara the first in February 2005.

Top scorers: Charlie Austin (9), Jay Rodriguez (5)

Most assists: Dušan Tadić, James Ward-Prowse (3)

Jermain Defoe is still proving to be prolific in the Premier League, with 14 goals to his name in all competitions.

His first-half double helped Sunderland defeat Crystal Palace and to move level on points with their relegation rivals, as they look to pull away from the foot of the table.

Defoe has scored in each of his last two Premier League appearances against Southampton for Sunderland, with both goals coming away from home. He is now second place in Sunderland’s all-time leading Premier League goalsorers, with 33.

Top scorers: Jermain Defoe (14), Victor Anichebe (3), Paddy McNair (2)

Most assists: Duncan Watmore (3), Adnan Januzaj (3), Jermain Defoe (2)

DID YOU KNOW?

There hasn’t been a goalless draw between these sides in any competition since March 1978 – each of the last 37 games has seen at least one goal scored.

Sunderland haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last eight Premier League games against the Saints (W1 D5 L2), conceding 16 goals – although half of those came in an 8-0 defeat in October 2014.

Premier League Predictions: Arsenal lose, Man United and Chelsea win, Liverpool fail again

Show/hide article…

Arsenal have been woeful in their last two Premier League outings, being beaten by Watford and Chelsea, and have seen their title hopes all but disappear. Without the weight of a title race, Arsene Wenger’s side usually produce a reaction. But Hull’s need for points is so great, the Gunners could be set to clock their third successive league defeat tomorrow lunchtime. Hull under Marco Silva have turned around their form, claiming seven points from their last four games, and with their new singings impressing so far, they look set to leave London happy. Jose Mourinho’s side are in good form and if results go their way they could move into the top four this weekend. Watford are inconsistent at the best of times and I don’t see them getting anything at Old Trafford. Zlatan Ibrahimovic will bully their defence with Henrikh Mkhitaryan pulling the strings from midfield. Eric Bailly looks likely to continue in place of the injured Phil Jones.

“The Blues’ array of world-class talent has the potential to grind down even the most resolute sides” Everton have shown their class in recent weeks and are unbeaten in four games in the top flight. The put six past Bournemouth last weekend but it will be much tighter at the Riverside tomorrow. Romelu Lukaku will prove the difference as the Toffees continue their push for European football. Beware a wounded Sam Allardyce. Crystal Palace were humiliated by struggling Sunderland, who registered an emphatic 4-0 victory last weekend. Allardyce won’t accept another abject performance and I fancy the Eagles to land a crucial win against Stoke. Palace, who are under intense pressure at Selhurst Park, should enjoy playing away and have won each of their last five fixtures against the Potters. Meanwhile Mark Hughes’ side have flattered to deceive with just two wins in their last 11 games.

Don’t jump on the Sunderland survival bandwagon just yet. The Black Cats may have thumped a dismal Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park last weekend, but Southampton are a very different proposition. Claude Puel’s side have suffered three-consecutive defeats but I’m prepared to blame those results on the elation of reaching the EFL Cup final. With their feet firmly back on the ground, I expect Saints to deliver a better performance and take a point back to the South Coast. These two sides seem pretty evenly matched on the face of it and are currently eighth and ninth in the table respectively. Both sides are in fine fettle at the moment and will be confident going into this clash. Should West Ham fail to beat the Baggies at the London Stadium, ninth could be all they can hope for this season. But with Tony Pulis’ West Brom being one of the teams of the season so far, a draw looks odds on here.

At the risk of looking a complete fool, this is the most nailed-on result of the weekend. Liverpool will be desperate for a result having suffered a series of lacklustre results, while Tottenham are struggling for goals having netted just once past Sunderland and Middlesbrough. The winners at Anfield? Chelsea. These two are heading for a 1-1 draw. It looks like there’s no stopping Chelsea at the moment. But plucky Burnley could be ready to upset the party. The Clarets’ home form is mightily impressive despite their league position. Nevertheless, the Blues’ array of world-class talent has the potential to grind down even the most resolute sides.

Højbjerg: Time to step up

Show/hide article…

Saints head to the Stadium of Light to take on a Black Cats team that, while bottom of the Premier League, is coming off the back of a 0-0 draw with Tottenham and a crushing 4-0 win away to Crystal Palace.

Claude Puel’s side head into the game in a healthier position, eight points better off and in 13th position, but having lost six of their last seven top-flight fixtures.

Højbjerg says the time for improvement is now.

“It’s a big, important moment,” he said. "Like any other game, it’s very important.

"We want to go into the game to win it, because this is how we have done it the whole season and we will do it again on Saturday.

"But it’s true that we need to get the results and we need to step up in our game, but we are training hard and we are working on it in training, then the results will come, I’m sure.

“There are many games left, fortunately, in the Premier League that we can still get back on track and get to where we think we belong and then we have the [EFL Cup] final, so we still have it all in our own hands.”

Despite their placing in the table, the midfielder expects a tough challenge from Sunderland this weekend.

“Not only Sunderland, but this is the Premier League and everything can happen,” he said.

“Sunderland know that they need to survive, and we need to be at our top level.”

Moyes sweating on injuries ahead of Saints’ visit

Show/hide article…

Sunderland boss David Moyes is hopeful of having John O’Shea and Adnan Januzaj fit for tomorrow’s Premier League clash with Saints.

Central defender O’Shea (hamstring) and Januzaj (hip) both picked up injuries in last Saturday’s 4-0 victory at Crystal Palace but have trained this week.

Januzaj’s midfield colleague Jack Rodwell (also hamstring) has not been as fortunate and will not be involved.

Keeper Jordan Pickford is closing in on a return from a knee problem but will not be risked against the Saints.

Midfielders Jan Kirchhoff and Paddy McNair and strikers Victor Anichebe and Duncan Watmore (all knee), as well as midfielder Lee Cattermole (hip), are still sidelined and defender Papy Djilobodji is suspended.
