Southampton board to blame if they go down: Sutton, In Short - Radio 5 live

Show/hide article…

Chris Sutton says the Southampton board should be held responsible if the club are relegated from the Premier League.

Saints sacked manager Mauricio Pellegrino on Monday with the team just one point and one place above the relegation zone with eight games left this season.

Former Celtic striker Sutton believes Pellegrino should have been replaced “months ago” and blames the board for their “poor planning”.

This clip was first broadcast during 5 live Sport, Wednesday 14 March 2018.

Hughes appointed Saints boss

Show/hide article…

SAINTS have named Mark Hughes their new manager, handing the vastly experienced boss a short-term contract until the end of the season.

Hughes brings with him his assistants Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki and his task will now be to keep Saints in the Premier League with eight games remaining.

The 54-year-old will take charge of his first training session at Staplewood tomorrow to begin preparations ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup quarter final at Wigan Athletic.

Hughes, who played for the club from 1998 to 2000, replaces Mauricio Pellegrino, who was sacked on Monday night after a run of just one win in 17 league games.

Hughes said: “It’s a challenge I’m excited by. It’s a great opportunity to come back to a club I know well, and a club I’ve got real affinity with, and I couldn’t turn that down.

"I bring experience of the Premier League. I understand what it takes in this league to win games. But first and foremost I think it’s about coming in and maybe being that different voice, that different message from myself and the staff, that will enable the players to recognise and focus on what needs to be done in this key period of the season.

“The objective clearly is to remain in the league and make sure we’re a Premier League club next year. That’s where this club needs to be, that’s where it should be, and that’s our intention to make sure it remains there.”

Bowen and Niedzwiecki will take the roles of assistant manager and assistant First Team Coach respectively alongside existing first team assistant coach Kelvin Davis, goalkeeping coach Dave Watson and head of sports science Alek Gross.

Le Tissier backs Hughes as perfect choice for Saints

Show/hide article…

(Reuters) - Mark Hughes’ vast Premier League experience and connection with Southampton makes him the perfect choice to rescue the team from the threat of relegation, former club captain Matthew Le Tissier said.

Southampton appointed Hughes on Wednesday as a replacement for Argentine Mauricio Pellegrino, who was sacked as manager earlier this week with the south-coast club fourth from bottom in the standings, a point and a place above the drop zone.

“The situation we are in is not a great one and we don’t need a manager coming in who doesn’t know the players, doesn’t know the league. So Mark would seem to be with the club’s way of thinking,” Le Tissier, who scored 209 goals for Southampton during his 16 years at the club, told Sky Sports.

Hughes, who spent two seasons at Southampton late in his playing career, was sacked by relegation-threatened Stoke City in January after an FA Cup third round defeat by League Two (fourth tier) Coventry City.

The former striker had previously guided the Potters to three successive top-10 finishes from the 2013-04 campaign.

“He obviously did not have a great season at Stoke this year but as far as I can remember I think it was the first time he had a team really struggling against relegation,” Le Tissier added of the former Manchester City and Blackburn manager.

“He’s managed some big teams. He has a wealth of experience of the game… but I’ll keep my fingers crossed he can keep us up this season first and foremost, then get us to kick on again next season.”

Hughes handed task of saving Southampton from relegation

Show/hide article…

LONDON (Reuters) - Premier League Southampton named Mark Hughes as their new manager on Wednesday, handing him the task of rescuing the club from the threat of relegation only two months after he was fired by Stoke City.

The former Wales and Manchester City boss replaced Argentine Mauricio Pellegrino, who was sacked on Monday with the club fourth from bottom in the Premier League table, a point and a place above the drop zone.

The 54-year-old Hughes has been given a contract until the end of the season, the club said in a statement on their website.

Hughes, a former Southampton player, guided Stoke to top-10 finishes for three successive seasons from 2013 to 2016 but is no stranger to this season’s relegation dogfight.

Stoke were in the drop zone when he was sacked after an FA Cup third-round defeat by League Two (fourth tier) Coventry City in January.

“It’s a challenge I’m excited by. It’s a great opportunity to come back to a club I know well, and a club I’ve got real affinity with, and I couldn’t turn that down,” Hughes said.

“The objective clearly is to remain in the league and make sure we’re a Premier League club next year. That’s where this club needs to be, that’s where it should be, and that’s our intention to make sure it remains there.”

Southampton have won five league games this season and managed only one victory, against bottom-of-the-table West Bromwich Albion, in Pellegrino’s last 17 Premier League matches at the helm.

Southampton, who are the ninth Premier League club to change manager this term, are in their sixth straight season in the top flight and have not finished lower than 14th in that time.

“Hughes has agreed a contract with the club until the end of the season and will take training at the club’s Staplewood Campus for the first time on Thursday,” Southampton said.

“The club is confident that this appointment will allow the complete focus of the manager, players and staff to be on the remaining games of this season.”

Southampton visit third-tier Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Sunday but their next league game is not until March 31 when they travel to relegation rivals West Ham United.

Hughes, the former Manchester United, Barcelona and Chelsea striker, also managed Blackburn Rovers, Fulham and Queens Park Rangers.
