Southampton announce former favourite Mark Hughes as new boss

Show/hide article…

Southampton have officially announced former favourite Mark Hughes as their new boss.

Saints sacked Mauricio Pellegrino on Monday with the side languishing 17th in the Premier League.

Saturday’s embarrassing 3-0 loss at fellow strugglers Newcastle was the final straw for the board - who have moved to appoint the Welshman until the end of the season.

He will be given a huge bonus - and a longer deal - if he can keep the Saints up.

The club have acted swiftly to get in a new manager before Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final at Wigan.

Hughes said: “It’s a challenge I’m excited by. It’s a great opportunity to come back to a club I know well, and a club I’ve got real affinity with. I couldn’t turn that down.

"I bring experience of the Premier League. I understand what it takes in this league to win games.

"But first and foremost I think it’s about coming in and maybe being that different voice, that different message from myself and the staff, that will enable the players to recognise and focus on what needs to be done in this key period of the season.

"The objective clearly is to remain in the league and make sure we’re a Premier League club next year.

“That’s where this club needs to be, that’s where it should be, and that’s our intention to make sure it remains there.”

Hughes, who made 60 appearances for the club as a player, will be joined at St Mary’s by Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki as assistant boss and first team coach.

Assistant coach Kelvin Davis, head of goalkeeping Dave Watson and head of sports science Alek Gross will stay on.

Mark Hughes: Southampton appoint former Stoke manager until end of season

Show/hide article…

Southampton have appointed former Stoke boss Mark Hughes as their new manager until the end of the season.

The 54-year-old replaces Mauricio Pellegrino, who was sacked by Saints on Monday with the team one point and one place above the relegation zone.

They had won once in 17 games, with eight league matches left this season.

Hughes was sacked by Stoke in January after four and a half years in charge, leaving with the Potters in the relegation zone.

He has taken charge of 445 Premier League matches for Blackburn, Manchester City, Fulham, QPR and Stoke during a managerial career that began with five years in charge of his native Wales.

He spent two years at Southampton from 1998 to 2000 in a 22-year playing career that also included spells at Manchester United, Chelsea and Barcelona.

“It’s a challenge I’m excited by. It’s a great opportunity to come back to a club I know well, and a club I’ve got real affinity with, and I couldn’t turn that down,” Hughes said.

"I bring experience of the Premier League. I understand what it takes in this league to win games. But first and foremost I think it’s about coming in and maybe being that different voice, that different message from myself and the staff, that will enable the players to recognise and focus on what needs to be done in this key period of the season.

“The objective clearly is to remain in the league and make sure we’re a Premier League club next year. That’s where this club needs to be, that’s where it should be, and that’s our intention to make sure it remains there.”

Hughes’ first game will be Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final against League One side Wigan.

Saints were beaten 3-0 by Newcastle on Saturday and their next league game is away to fellow strugglers West Ham on 31 March.

Hughes is the club’s fifth permanent manager in the five years since Mauricio Pochettino, now Spurs manager, replaced Nigel Adkins.

Hughes relishing Saints challenge

Show/hide article…

Hughes returns to the south coast 18 years after his spell here as a player and brings with him a wealth of managerial experience and expertise in the top-flight having taken charge of over 400 games.

“It’s a challenge, but it’s one I’m excited by and the opportunity to come back a club I know well and have a real affinity with in my view was one I wasn’t expecting at the late stage of the season,” Hughes said.

“But when an opportunity like this presents itself you have to take it and my connection with the club was important as well.

“I bring experience of the Premier League and I’ve won a lot of points in my career as Premier League manager.

“I understand what it takes to win games in this league. First and foremost, I think it’s about coming in and maybe being that different voice and giving different messages from myself and the staff.

“The objective clearly is to make sure we’re a Premier League club next year. That’s where the club needs to be and that’s where it should be.

Saints appoint Mark Hughes

Show/hide article…

Hughes has agreed a contract with the club until the end of the season and will take training at the club’s Staplewood Campus for the first time on Thursday.

The 54-year-old will bring extensive experience of the Premier League, having managed at Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham, Queens Park Rangers and most recently Stoke City, taking charge of almost 450 top-flight matches and achieving eight top-ten finishes in his career to date.

The club is confident that this appointment will allow the complete focus of the manager, players and staff to be on the remaining games of this season.

Hughes, who made 60 appearances for the club as a player, will be joined at St Mary’s by Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki. They will take the roles of Assistant Manager and Assistant First Team Coach respectively alongside existing First Team Assistant Coach Kelvin Davis, Head of Goalkeeping Dave Watson and Head of Sports Science Alek Gross.

Mark Hughes appointed new Southampton manager

Show/hide article…

Mark Hughes has been announced as the new manager of Southampton, charged with keeping the relegation-threatened Saints in the Premier League.

The former Stoke boss replaces Mauricio Pellegrino who was sacked after only one win in 17 league games.

Southampton currently reside just outside the drop zone, one point away from the bottom three and Hughes will have eight games to keep his new side afloat.

Hughes played 60 times for Southampton and joins the club on a short term deal until the end of the season.

The 57-year-old told the club’s website: 'It’s a challenge I’m excited by. It’s a great opportunity to come back to a club I know well, and a club I’ve got real affinity with, and I couldn’t turn that down.

'I understand what it takes in this league to win games.

'But first and foremost I think it’s about coming in and maybe being that different voice, that different message from myself and the staff, that will enable the players to recognise and focus on what needs to be done in this key period of the season.

'The objective clearly is to remain in the league and make sure we’re a Premier League club next year.

‘That’s where this club needs to be, that’s where it should be, and that’s our intention to make sure it remains there,’ he concluded.

Hughes will be joined by his trusted lieutenants Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki at St Mary’s. They will be joined by existing staff assistant coach Kelvin Davis, head of goalkeeping Dave Watson and head of sports science Alek Gross.

In 1998, Hughes was signed by Dave Jones for the south coast side for £650,000 as a replacement for David Hirst.

The prolific striker failed to replicate his goal-scoring prowess from his United days, netting just twice during his time at Saints which eventually meant he was pushed back into midfield where he helped Jones maintain their status in the Premier League.

Hughes’ goals at Southampton came against Blackburn and Newcastle, with the latter a fantastic volley at the Dell in August 1999.

The striker also struggled with disciplinary issues and managed to rack up 14 yellow cards during his first season at Southampton, a tally that hasn’t been reached in the Premier League since.

Following the arrival of manager Glenn Hoddle, Hughes’ time at Southampton ended as he moved on to Everton in March 2000.

Southampton appoint Mark Hughes as new manager with task of steering club to safety

Show/hide article…

Southampton have appointed Mark Hughes as their new manager on an initial short-term contract until the end of the season, and have tasked the Welshman with steering the club away from relegation.

Saints sacked Mauricio Pellegrino on Monday evening following a terrible run of only one win in 17 Premier League matches which leaves the club one place and one point above the bottom three.

Hughes left Stoke City in January after four-and-a-half seasons in charge, where he achieved a run of creditable mid-table finishes before this season’s struggles led to his departure. Southampton see his experience as vital in their bid to avoid relegation.

The manager is set to take training on Thursday ahead of the FA Cup quarter-final against Wigan Athletic on Sunday, and will then have two weeks to prepare for the first of eight critical Premier League games, starting at West Ham on 31 March.

Whether Hughes is kept on to the start of next season will depend on the impact he makes over the coming weeks, and the Southampton hierarchy will assess his performance and the end of what has been a disastrous campaign.

Pellegrino was charged with establishing a more attractive and adventurous style of football, following Claude Puel’s departure last summer, but the Argentine’s failure has shifted the club’s priorities and in the short-term any style of play will do, so long as it preserves their top-flight status.

“It’s a challenge I’m excited by,” Hughes said. “It’s a great opportunity to come back to a club I know well, and a club I’ve got a real affinity with, and I couldn’t turn that down.

“I bring experience of the Premier League. I understand what it takes in this league to win games. But first and foremost I think it’s about coming in and maybe being that different voice, that different message.

“The objective clearly is to remain in the league and make sure we’re a Premier League club next year. That’s where this club needs to be, that’s where it should be, and that’s our intention to make sure it remains there.”

Hughes will be joined at St Mary’s by new assistant manager Mark Bowen and assistant first-team coach Eddie Niedzwiecki, to work alongside existing first-team coach Kelvin Davis, goalkeeping coach Dave Watson and head of sports science Alek Gross.

Hughes played for Southampton between 1998 and 2000, making 52 appearances in the Premier League. He has managed Blackburn, Manchester City, Fulham and Queens Park Rangers, as well as a four-year spell in charge of Wales.

Exclusive: Mark Hughes poised for £1m bonus if he can avoid relegation after Southampton appoint Welshman

Show/hide article…

Mark Hughes is on a survival bonus of just under £1 million to keep Southampton in the Premier League after his appointment as the club’s new manager was confirmed on Wednesday night.

As revealed by Telegraph Sport, Hughes was Southampton’s first choice candidate following the decision to sack Mauricio Pellegrino and he will return to management in Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final against Wigan.

There are then eight crucial Premier League games to ensure that Southampton do not drop into the bottom three from their current precarious position just one point above the relegation zone.

Pellegrino had overseen a sequence of just one league win in 17 matches and, while the Southampton board had been reluctant to make a mid-season change, they eventually concluded that the greater risk was not to act.

Their priority was an available manager with an immediate knowledge of the Premier League and a mutual decision over whether Hughes will continue on a longer-term contract will be taken at the end of the season.

Only Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsène Wenger, Harry Redknapp, David Moyes and Sam Allardyce have managed more Premier League games than Hughes and this will be his fifth job at an English top-flight club.

Mark Hughes has been appointed as the manager of Southampton until the end of the season.

The 54-year-old will take his first training session on Thursday with Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki joining his backroom coaching staff as assistant manager and assistant first team coach respectively.

Hughes was dismissed by Stoke City in January, with the Potters in the bottom three following a poor run of form. But they had three ninth-place finishes under the Welshman before finishing 13th last term.

Hughes began his managerial career with the Wales national team and subsequently managed Blackburn, Manchester City, Fulham and QPR. He has never been relegated from the top flight as manager.

Pellegrino was sacked on Monday after just one win in their last 17 games - leaving the team just a point clear of the relegation zone.

Hughes’ reign as Southampton boss begins with an FA Cup quarter-final tie against Wigan at the DW Stadium on Sunday.
