Mark Hughes out of his comfort zone inspiring Southampton, says Mark Schwarzer

Mark Hughes out of his comfort zone inspiring Southampton, says Mark Schwarzer

Mark Hughes has been placed out of his comfort zone having been tasked with inspiring Southampton to safety, says Mark Schwarzer.

Hughes has been appointed manager at St Mary’s until the end of the season following Mauricio Pellegrino’s sacking on Monday.

Schwarzer, who played under Hughes at Fulham, has described the appointment as “strange”, questioning the Welshman’s ability to motivate players individually and as a squad.

“It’s a massive challenge,” Schwarzer told The Debate. "It’s going to put him out of his comfort zone because what I notice as a player being managed by Mark Hughes, particularly that one-on-one conversation with him, he wasn’t that comfortable with.

"Even in a group, speaking in front of the players, he wasn’t someone I thought really conducted himself well and enjoys being in front of a group of players. Actually, if anything, he felt a little bit uncomfortable in front of the group.

"It is a strange one because it’s really going to put himself out of his comfort zone. He has to stand there and inspire this group of players.

"Sometimes you’d look over to the sideline and saw him react and you’d think I wish he did that in the changing room. You’d wish he’d coming into the changing room after a performance and be like he was on the touchline.

"That’s the Mark Hughes I envisaged having watched him and played against him as a player. As a manager he was completely different.

"He’s got to give them a direction because at the moment they are lacking it, lacking a style of play and a system.

“They just looked like they were completely confused about how they were supposed to play football under Pellegrino.”

Hughes arrived at Southampton’s Staplewood training campus on Thursday morning and immediately got to work ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final clash at Wigan.

A crucial clash with relegation rivals West Ham follows the week after, and Schwarzer believes Hughes must take full advantage of the two-week period ahead of the trip to the London Stadium.

“Two things he has to identify really quickly is how they are going to play and set up and how he is going to lift the players,” he added. "This two-week period is enormous for them before they play West Ham.

“Going to the London Stadium with all that’s going on at West Ham is in one way an unbelievable opportunity for Southampton to go there and try to get a result. We all know West Ham are on edge.”

‘Stoke are in the bottom three because of Mark Hughes’ – Joey Barton criticises Southampton’s new manager appointment

Show/hide article…

Joey Barton has criticised Southampton’s appointment of Mark Hughes as their new manager, telling talkSPORT it highlights a worrying trend with Premier League clubs.

Hughes’ return to St Mary’s – where he was a player from 1998 to 2000 – was confirmed on Wednesday evening, succeeding Mauricio Pellegrino who was sacked by the club on Monday after a run of one win in 17 league games.

The Welshman has eight games to save the Saints from relegation, with the club currently sitting one point above the bottom-three.

He has only signed a deal until the end of the season but Barton - who played under the manager at Queens Park Rangers - has questioned the appointment after Hughes left Stoke City in the mire when he was sacked by the Potters in January.

Asked about his relationship with his former boss, Barton said: “I don’t think it’s fit for air on radio, but I’m very surprised.

“I was very, very surprised to see he was the favourite.

“I can understand why Southampton would go for him, he’s got Premier League experience, but I just don’t get it.

“Maybe that’s just my experience of him. This is somebody I’ve worked with and we didn’t have a great relationship, so obviously I’m going to biased in the negative towards him.

“It sets a worrying trend when you look at the last few managerial replacements in the Premier League. We’re no longer attracting the crème de la crème.

“Stoke City fans are probably better judges of Mark Hughes’ ability than me, but Stoke are comfortably in the bottom three and I think a lot of that is to do with Mark Hughes.”

Sixth PL job puts Hughes in elite company

Show/hide article…

Mark Hughes’s appointment as Southampton manager has put him in elite company.

The Welshman will become only the second man to have managed six different teams in the Premier League.

The 54-year-old started out at Blackburn Rovers in 2004, before his success there led to him being hired by Manchester City four years later.

After leaving Manchester in December 2009, Hughes was next in charge of Fulham, whom he led to qualifying for the UEFA Europa League.

The next season Hughes took over at Queens Park Rangers in January 2012, keeping them up despite an extraordinary 3-2 final-day defeat at the hands of Man City, who clinched the title as a result. He left in November of that year.

Hughes was appointed Tony Pulis’s replacement at Stoke City ahead of the 2013/14 campaign, guiding the Potters to ninth place in his first three seasons in charge before his departure in January 2018.

Hughes moves clear of four men who have taken charge of five PL clubs: Harry Redknapp (West Ham United, Portsmouth (twice), Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, QPR); Alan Pardew (West Ham, Charlton Athletic, Newcastle United, Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion) and Roy Hodgson (Blackburn, Fulham, Liverpool, West Brom and Palace).

Only one manager has taken charge of more clubs than Hughes’s six.

Everton’s appointment of Sam Allardyce in November last year made them his seventh PL club after Bolton Wanderers, Newcastle, Blackburn, West Ham, Sunderland and Palace.

Hughes has the added distinction of having played for five different clubs in the Premier League: Manchester United, Chelsea, Southampton, Everton and Blackburn.

Hughes backed to save Saints

Show/hide article…

SAINTS legend Francis Benali has backed Mark Hughes to lead the club to Premier League survival.

With eight games to go Saints have brought in Hughes to try and save their troubled season, having sacked Mauricio Pellegrino earlier this week after a disastrous run of one win in 17 games.

The Welshman will take charge of his first game at the helm on Sunday, when Saints travel to League One Wigan in the FA Cup quarter-final.

“What we need to have is someone to come in and have an impact and motivate,” said Benali, who played with Hughes at Saints in the late 1990s.

“You look at the squad, the quality it has, there is a lot of potential. It needs someone to come in and find that potential and quality from the players we have.

“The timing of the decision will give him the opportunity to work with the players ahead of the West Ham game at the end of the month, plenty of time to have an impact.

“I can obviously speak personally about how Mark was, having played with him at Saints and played against him.

“As an opponent he was always formidable, he had that competitive edge and you know he’ll bring that to management.

“Because of what he did as a player, he can command respect as a manager by the players. He will not be scared of airing his opinions and saying it how it is, either.

“He’s most definitely one to come in and have that drive and passion.

“Not only that but he has that Premier League experience – he’s earned his stripes as a manager – and tactical nous. Whoever comes in needs to have that and have an instant impact.”

Saints are currently a point outside the relegation and face eight crunch games in their fight for survival.

Benali is no stranger to a relegation scrap and believes Hughes, the former Stoke, Fulham, Manchester City, QPR and Blackburn boss, has the necessary experience to keep the club up.

“Yes, there’s still time for him to save the club. It always felt more comfortable as a player being in these situations, knowing you can have a say in the outcome on the pitch,” he said.

“Now, it’s more difficult as a fan, because it’s not up to me.

“But they’ve got to keep scrapping. Until it’s mathematically done, there’s still time.

“That presence he had. He was quite a quiet character off the pitch, but fiery on it. He was a warrior.”

Mark Hughes can ‘sort out’ Southampton, says ex-Saints keeper Paul Jones

Show/hide article…

Former Southampton goalkeeper Paul Jones is confident Mark Hughes can keep Saints in the Premier League.

Hughes, 54, has succeeded Mauricio Pellegrino, with Saints one point and one place above the relegation zone.

Jones played alongside Hughes for Wales and Southampton, where the former Stoke City boss spent two years as a player from 1998 to 2000 as well as being managed by Hughes as a Wales player.

“I think Mark’s got that ability to go in and sort them out quickly,” he said.

“I’m sure the fans will respond to him and I’m confident he will keep them up.”

Hughes, who has also managed Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, QPR and Fulham, was sacked by Stoke in January after four and a half years, with the club in the relegation zone.

But Jones, who made over 200 appearances for Southampton, believes Hughes can save their season.

“He’ll give 100% and he will certainly make people buck up their ideas and go out and perform,” Jones added.

"I think that’s what’s been lacking recently, talking to fans and what’s been said.

"On paper they’ve got a very good squad, but for some reason they’ve not performed.

“The league doesn’t lie, but he’ll give his experience and maybe give a bit of a rocket to a few that need to pull their weight and play better.”

Hughes is expected to have former international team-mates and long serving assistants Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki as part of his backroom team once again.

“They all work very well together,” said Jones.

"They explain what they want and how they want to play very well.

"You know your jobs and he likes to give the players the freedom to go out and do that as well.

“They’ll want to go out and express themselves.”
