Southampton 0-2 Liverpool: Firmino and Salah score

Show/hide article…

Gone in ten seconds. The game, Southampton’s hope, and, perhaps, even the reign of beleaguered manager Mauricio Pellegrino.

After Huddersfield and Newcastle rallied to remarkable victories earlier in the afternoon, Southampton supporters wondered if this was to become the day of the improbables, where the perceived down-and-outs raise themselves from the canvas.

Any optimism was swiftly filed away. In one devastating sequence only six minutes into the game, Liverpool produced a brutal counter-attack that has become the hallmark of this Jurgen Klopp team.

From their own penalty box to the Southampton goal in three passes and ten seconds, it was both breathless and beautiful to observe.

Goalkeeper Lorius Karius set the ball rolling with quick-thinking, launching the break with a speedy throw to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain midway inside his own half.

The midfielder looked up and clipped a smart pass that breached the Southampton midfield and defence, and then Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane prowled towards goal. Mane was not needed on this occasion, as Salah sped away and slid the ball inside - via the aid of a hapless miskick by Wesley Hoedt - and Firmino slid the ball into the goal.

The ball moved at pulsating pace and, inevitably, Salah was at the heart of it all. This not his most complete performance. The Egyptian was good, rather than great, but it was still enough for a goal and an assist as he took his Premier League tally to 22 goals for the season. He is now above Sergio Aguero and one behind Harry Kane in the personal duel for the Golden Boot.

Firmino, as ever, was not far behind Salah, working diligently, troubling defenders and providing touches of class in crucial areas. The pair now have 49 goals between them for the campaign.

Yet what of Southampton? This is becoming a sorry tale. If the first goal early on damaged the hosts, the second goal on 42 minutes crushed Pellegrino’s side entirely.

Salah’s goal was deftly constructed, as he nipped the ball into Firmino and the Brazilian impudently back-heeled a return pass into his team-mate’s path. Salah took a touch, brushed by the defenders in his midst, and sealed victory.

This win takes Klopp’s side two points behind Manchester United and within striking distance of second place. And if Salah is taking the shot, it will not be long before Liverpool usurp their north-west rivals.

Yet Klopp’s side will rarely have afternoons as straightforward as this. Liverpool, never known for their capacity to protect a lead, had little to contemplate in the second period and Southampton registered just one shot in a sterile second-half.

The atmosphere in the ground had been flat from the very start. The home supporters did not even give too much welly to their attempts to intimidate the returning Virgil van Dijk. A few touches were booed but not with particular menace and it all rather summed up Southampton’s continued malaise.

Everything about this club appears passive. The team are 18th in the Premier League and supporters are grumpy. The team play without urgency and are sleepwalking into the relegation doldrums.

After one victory in 14 Premier League games, the home fans booed on the final whistle and serenaded Pellegrino’s substitutions with taunts of ‘You don’t know what you’re doing.’

As if to stir the hornet’s further, former Southampton players Mane and Oxlade-Chamberlain were also in the starting XI and Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana were later introduced, almost teasing Southampton fans to wonder what might have been had the club held such a promising group of players together.

‘Born to play for Southampton, then be sold to Liverpool,’ read one sign held up by a young child at the game.

Van Dijk, who said he ‘enjoyed’ his reception, was barely flustered. He was assured in dominating striker Guido Carrillo and constructing Liverpool moves from deep. For Liverpool’s excellence and Southampton’s timidity, it was a game that broadcast exactly why the Dutchman pushed so hard and so long to make this transfer happen and in the end, Liverpool won with almost embarrassing ease.

Pellegrino’s side have come from behind to win only one Premier League game all season. They did produce something approaching a response after the first goal, bringing two excellent saves from Karius. Pierre-Emile Hojbjeg was picked out by Oriol Romeu, but Karius spread himself to smother the danger. Then James Ward-Prowse was denied when the German goalkeeper acrobatically tipped over his header. Yet at the same time, Mane twice fired wide and Firmino had two reasonable penalty appeals, even if his falls were on the theatrical side.

After the break, Liverpool attacked at will and only a fine save by Alex McCarthy denied Firmino before both Salah and Mane spurned clearcut chances to make the chasm greater.

Southampton, at least, can be sure that Liverpool will not be battering down the door to cherry-pick any of those players Van Dijk left behind.

Southampton 0-2 Liverpool: Klopp’s stars rated and slated

Show/hide article…

Liverpool moved to within two points of second-placed Manchester United after a routine win over Southampton at St Mary’s.

Former Saint Virgil van Dijk returned to Southampton for the first time since completing his £75million move to Liverpool which gave the game extra spice pre-match.

But that was all extinguished in the second-half as Jurgen Klopp’s side went into the break two goals to the good.

On six minutes, Roberto Firmino’s clinical finish gave the Reds the lead before the Brazilian turned provider with a sublime flick to allow Mohamed Salah to double their lead with a simple finish as the visitors cruised to victory.

Firmino and Salah carve Southampton apart in Liverpool stroll

Show/hide article…

Mohamed Salah’s season continues to go from strength to strength as the brilliant Egyptian scored one and made another to lift Liverpool back into third and close the gap on Manchester United.

It was the perfect way to prepare for Wednesday nights’ trip to Porto for the Champions League knockout stages as they cruised to victory against a beleaguered Southampton.

“I really think Harry Kane and Aguero are good players and some others but our boys are important for us. I love their skills and their attitude but really it is their work rate that impresses me,” said Jurgen Klopp of his goalscorers.

“We take whatever we can get. I didn’t know before the game that United would lose but we’re not too far away but it’s not a battle between us and them,” he added after Liverpool closed the gap to Jose Mourinho’s side to two points.

Awaiting the late kick-off on Sunday, Mauricio Pellegrino will have watched the weekend’s results with dismay as he contemplated the daunting visit of Jurgen Klopp’s side. Wins for Huddersfield, Swansea and Newcastle meant that the Saints were plunged back into the relegation zone despite their win at West Bromwich Albion last weekend.

Their predicament became worse after just six minutes when Wesley Hoedt failed to intercept Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s pass allowing Salah to feed Firmino who finished low into the corner.

“Obviously it was really tough to conceded really soon, too early. When you play against this side, I said before you have to do everything almost perfect,” said Pellegrino.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg should have levelled matters after Oriol Romeu picked him out at the far post but Loris Karius made himself big and blocked the Dane’s close-range effort.

Virgil van Dijk’s return did not go unnoticed and the Dutchman was booed with every touch. On the pitch he had a relatively quiet afternoon, with only Southampton’s Guido Carrillo being employed in attack. The Argentinian, the club’s record buy from Monaco last month, rose to head James Ward-Prowse’s cross at goal but Karius was equal to it.

From the next attack, Ward-Prowse then got on the end of Dusan Tadic’s deep delivery with Karius this time being forced to tip over.

“We played the best part of the game in the first half,” said Pellegrino. “Obviously after the second goal it was really difficult for us to come back and little by little our confidence was really down and that was the worst part for me.

“You have to show another spirit to bounce back at least. I think today the biggest defeat is the way we played in the second half."

Liverpool’s second came via a devastating one-two between Firmino and Salah finishing with the latter sweeping home his 29th goal of the season in all competitions.

Former Liverpool defender Pellegrino was forced into a change just before the hour mark when influential Gabonese midfielder Mario Lemina limped off to be replaced by Sofiane Boufal.

For Liverpool, this was the perfect way to prepare for Wednesday night’s trip to Portugal. Klopp’s side did not have to overexert themselves on the South Coast and will fancy themselves to score in the away leg.

After this, only four of Saints’ eleven remaining games are at home and their Premier League future remains very much in the balance.

This result means that they have equalled their Premier League record of seven home games without a win and they could hardly have made this easier Liverpool.

Cédric: It’s up to us to put things right

Show/hide article…

Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah were on target in the first half as the visitors showed their attacking prowess with stunning pace and precision on the counter-attack.

The result ended Saints’ six-match unbeaten run in all competitions and leaves the team back in the bottom three after Premier League rivals picked up points elsewhere.

“We started the game well in the first half, but we suffered with a goal we shouldn’t have suffered in that moment,” Cédric said.

“We had a good reaction after the first goal, but then they scored a second goal very similar to the first one.

“After that, we went a little bit down and the second half was not the greatest reaction we should have.

“We knew about the pace they have up front. Everyone knows that Liverpool have a very good squad, but it’s not really just about that.

“It’s also about us. If you are all on the same page, we would not worry about it.

“It does not matter if we play Liverpool, Man City, Manchester United… whatever. We need to come together and fight.”

Van Dijk sends message to boo boys

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk has hit back at the Southampton boo-boys after he received a hot reception on his St Mary’s return.

The Dutch defender finally quit the South Coast in January after a protracted transfer saga that saw Liverpool eventually splash out £75million for his services.

Van Dijk starred as the Reds cruised to a 2-0 win to pile more misery on the Premier League strugglers.

And the centre-back insists he didn’t deserve the rough ride he was given by Saints supporters.

He said: “I think it is a bit unfair because no-one really knows what happened over the summer and the last few months but I just kept my head down and enjoyed it.”

Goals from Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah moved Jurgen Klopp’s men to within two points of second-placed Manchester United.

“It was mature today,” Klopp said.

"The rhythm was not too good today but we scored wonderful goals and should have scored more.

“I think we deserved the three points, clean sheet, nearly perfect today. We could have closed it earlier.”

Van Dijk ‘enjoyed’ being booed by Southampton fans in Liverpool win

Show/hide article…

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk says he “enjoyed” the boos that he received from the Southampton fans on Sunday, but admitted his former club’s relegation plight has hurt him.

Van Dijk returned to St Mary’s Stadium on Sunday for the first time since sealing a £75m transfer to Liverpool last month, with the Southampton supporters greeting the defender with boos every time he touched the ball.

The reaction was down to the cloud that Van Dijk left Southampton under as his move to Anfield came just six months after he had handed in a transfer request in a bid to force through a transfer to Liverpool.

Indeed, Jurgen Klopp was so concerned about the hostile reception Van Dijk could get on Sunday he revealed he would speak to the defender about not letting the atmosphere at St Mary’s affect his game.

But after Van Dijk started against Southampton and helped Liverpool keep a clean sheet as they beat the Saints 2-0, the 26-year-old insisted he wasn’t bothered about the boos which he heard on Sunday.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Van Dijk said: "You just enjoy it. It’s the only thing I think you can do.

"I think it is a bit unfair because no-one really knows what happened over the summer and the last few months but I just kept my head down and enjoyed it.

“I think we should have scored more. We deserved the win but we should have made it a bit easier for ourselves.”

While the result sent Liverpool into third place in the Premier League standings, it kept Southampton in the bottom three because of Huddersfield’s 4-1 win at home to Bournemouth earlier in the day.

And Van Dijk admitted seeing the Saints struggle this season has hurt him because he still has lots of friends in the dressing room.

When asked if he’s hurt by Southampton’s form this term, the defender said: "Definitely.

“I have a lot of good friends here, I care for the club. It is difficult to get out of the relegation zone but they have quality.” players."

Mauricio Pellegrino urges Southampton to remain calm in face of relegation fears

Show/hide article…

Mauricio Pellegrino has urged Southampton to remain calm and keep fighting after Sunday’s defeat to Liverpool left them in the relegation zone.

First-half goals from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah ensured Virgil van Dijk won on his return to St. Mary’s and left the Saints a point from safety after key wins for the relegation rivals this weekend.

Southampton have now won just one of their last 14 Premier League games, but Pellegrino insists his squad can turn things around quickly.

“We are in one situation, but we have to keep going, keep fighting,” he told Sky Sports.

"We understand the emotion of the fans, everything in the Premier League is tight and everything changes.

“I am convinced we have got good pace to try to win the next game. It will be long until the end, we have to be there, recover our mentality and in football everything can change in two or three weeks.”

Southampton were behind inside six minutes as Salah teed up Firmino for the opener at the end of a flowing counter before the Brazilian returned the favour with a sumptuous back-heel which set up the Egyptian for his 29th goal of the season on 42 minutes.

The deficit proved too big for Saints to overturn as an encouraging first half-display was followed by a second-half performance which angered Pellegrino.

“We made it really difficult,” the Saints boss added. "After we conceded from a counter attack it was a pity because we dominated the first half and played the best part of the game.

"We created two or three clear chances but after their second goal we were down in confidence and belief and we couldn’t react in the second half.

"I feel that this second half didn’t show our reaction since January, because we were growing every single weekend.

"We didn’t show what we are in the second half. The two goals were too much. We had to show another phase because we needed to score just one goal to be in the game until the end.

“The second half was really bad. Overall the anxiety was really high, we were not calm and gave the ball away all of the time.”

Southampton’s confidence is running out, admits Mauricio Pellegrino

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino faces an uncertain future after his side slipped into the Premier League relegation zone after losing at home to Liverpool.

Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino scored to pile on the misery for Pellegrino who admitted the fans have run out of patience with him.

‘It’s really difficult to ask for more support than this in this situation,’ he said. ‘I have to be grateful with the fans for respecting the players until the end. We have the same feelings right now.

‘We are responsible for this. I am the first responsible for this.’

Victory over West Brom last week, which was Southampton’s first in the league since November, had given Pellegrino confidence his side were on the up.

But the 46-year-old said the belief of his players went when Firmino opened the scoring six minutes into Sunday’s match.

‘Our belief and confidence was very down and that was the worst part of the game,’ he said. ‘We have to be more brave in these types of situations. You can be losing 3-0 but you can show spirit to try and bounce back, and try until the end.’

Pellegrino also criticised central defender Wesley Hoedt. Hoedt was at fault for both of Liverpool’s goals.

‘Obviously it was really tough to concede too early. When you play against this side, I said before, you have to do everything almost perfectly. It was a pity to concede to this mistake on the counter-attack. Obviously, after the second goal, it was really tough for us to come back and, little by little, our confidence in the game was really down.’

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp started Virgil van Dijk in the defender’s first appearance at St Mary’s since leaving for £75million last month.

Klopp said he was pleased with the way Van Dijk handled himself after being booed by the home supporters.

He said: ‘He did really well and dealt with the situation fantastically. We had a little chat before the game, asking him what he thought.

'I didn’t want to make him nervous, but obviously he wasn’t. The crowd is there to make life difficult for the opponent, but it wasn’t too difficult for him from this point of view.’

Virgil van Dijk happy with his return to St Mary’s after Liverpool’s easy win at Southampton

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk said he just ‘did his thing’ despite receiving a hostile reception on his return to St Mary’s in Liverpool’s comfortable win over Southampton.

The Dutchman, who moved to the Merseyside club for a reported fee of £75million in January was greeted with boos every time he touched the ball in what turned out to be an easy victory for his new club.

Roberto Firmino gave Liverpool an early lead with an assured finish after Mohamed Salah pounced on a mistake by Wesley Hoedt.

The hosts forced good saves from Loris Karius in the first-half, but the contest was all sewn up when Firmino’s wonderful flick let in Salah who bagged his 29th goal of the season just before the break.

The return of van Dijk gave the fixture added spice going into the game, but it turned out to be a fairly straightforward afternoon for him and Liverpool.

And the centre-back insisted he was not fazed by the chorus of boos that greeted him when he touched the ball.

In an interview with Sky Sports after the game, van Dijk said: "I just focused on the game. I enjoyed being back and there are a lot of good memories here.

“You can’t do anything about the reception, you just do your thing.”

Defeat sees Southampton fall into the relegation zone after Newcastle’s surprise win over Manchester United and Saints manager Mauricio Pellegrino insisted his side’s situation can change in a matter of weeks.

He said: "It’s emotional for a lot of people. It’s tight in the Premier League and the teams can change around.

"We will try to win the next game and until the end we will be there.

“In football everything can change in a few weeks.”

Pellegrino also lamented his side’s confidence and self-belief after Liverpool’s second goal.

He added: "It was really difficult because we conceded on the counter-attack, where they are really dangerous.

"We then created two or three chances but after their second goal our team were a little bit harmed in their self-confidence and belief.

"We couldn’t show what we are about, it was too much for us.

“We just needed to score one goal to get back in it.”

Five things you missed from Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

Show/hide article…

Liverpool overcame the disappointment of conceding a late equaliser against Tottenham last week by easily seeing off Southampton 2-0 at St. Mary’s.

Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah both scored in the first half to ensure the Reds will end the weekend in the top four, and the Saints in the bottom three.

Here, Sportsmail examines five things you may have missed from Sunday afternoon’s Premier League action…

There’s no place like home…

Virgil van Dijk had an awkward start to Sunday’s late fixture. On his first return to St. Mary’s since completing his £75m move to Liverpool, the Dutch defender headed straight to the home dressing room and was left briefly baffled as to why the door wouldn’t open.

Someone set him straight and he managed to find his Liverpool teammates in the end. For someone who seemed so intent on leaving last summer, it’s surprising he was so keen to get back in that changing room.

Questions have been asked of Liverpool’s back line for some time, but there’s no doubting their prowess in front of goal this season - especially away from the comforts of home. Heading into the match, Liverpool had scored five more goals at other Premier League grounds than they had managed in front of the Kop.

After netting twice, the Merseyside outfit have scored three more away goals (34) than any other team in Europe’s top five leagues this season, and more than they had managed in the whole of last season.

This win represented Jurgen Klopp’s 50th Premier League victory in charge of Liverpool, in his 95th match.

Strangely, his predecessor, Brendan Rodgers, took the same number of league game to record his half century of victories. Reds fans will hope Klopp clips on from here to greater effect than the current Celtic boss.

They are all about managing expectations on the south coast. There have been a surplus of signs popping up at grounds across the Premier League with children asking for player’s shirts.

However, this junior Saint realises that his support could be fleeting as he lies in wait for a transfer to Liverpool like the rest of his team.

With the match well and truly over and just a minutes to go, Jurgen Klopp opted to give Southampton fans what they’d been calling out for - the opportunity to boo all five of their former players on the visiting side.

Goalscorers Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah made way for Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren respectively in a knowing nod to their former side. Top trolling from Klopp.
